There are three versions of this classic horror film... the original silent German expressionist film from 1919, the 1962 remake, and more recently, 2005's remake by David Lee Fisher that used digitally restored backgrounds from the 1919 classic. Which is your favorite?

Still waiting for the original, but I did see the weird, kitschy remake from '89. Fun, but strange.

My favorite was the tinted version of the 1919 untouchable classic. I guess a lot of people don't know , I did'nt for many years  , that , in the Silent era , they did have the technology to "Colorize" films , but , with only one or two colors at a time....."The Lost World" and "Phantom of The Opera" , e.g.  , were beautifully colorized , each scene in a different hue. They showed a very rare colorized "Caligari" in Chicago , once , with the original , splendid , handwritten German text (English subtitles transcribed below.). I think the print was on loan from Kino , the Kings of restoring and re- releasing great Silent films. I don't think this version has been released , commercially. The first full color feature film was a Douglas Fairbanks adventure , "The Black Pirate " , if I'm not mistaken. I saw it once , and it was largely comprised of greens and reds.

I remember having watched snippets of the classic 1919 classic. I admit having understood very little of what was going on....only later in life did I do a little research on the expressionism used in it to try and fully grasp the meaning of it :). Dreamy flick indeed. I'd like to watch the other 2 versions and compare them though.

Being the lame-o that I am, I've only seen footage of the 1919 version in documentaries but it's always been on my list of must sees before I die. And unfortunatly, I wasn't aware that there were other versions.

I've only seen the original... So I can't really pick a favourite. I'm sure the 60's version is pretty cool, I just added it to my Lovefilm [the UK's "Netflix"] list. I'd like to check out the 2005 version just for curiousity value though.

I wonder if that 2005 version is the one I wrote dvd box copy for at my old job. If so, I hated it. Definitely the original. it helped create a whole genre of film.
