Radio What Wave Playlist Sept 5/2013

      2. Marshmallow Overcoat...Suddenly Sunday...from The Complete Sound CD Boxset. The Marshmallow Overcoat were from Tucson and have just started a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to do a double LP best of collection.

      3. Marshmallow Overcoat...Tears...as above.

      143

      4. Marshmallow Overcoat...Tried To Hide....recorded at Call The Office, 4/11/1989. The only time they ever played London Ontario.

      5. The Mongrels...All Systems Go....from a Radio What Wave Session that aired 5/2/2013. The Mongrels will be playing at St Regis Hotel tonight.

      6. The Mongrels...Do It...as above.

      7. The Mongrols...Plastic Girl...from 4 Whom The Bell Tolls, a 7" that came with What Wave zine 16, October 1988. This is a different Mongrols than above (note spelling), yet both bands came from London Ontario.

      144

      The Mongrels, late 80's

      8. The Shadows Of Knight...I'm Gonna Make You Mine...from the Edsel greatest hits LP. This is for Joe Kelley, their guitarist who passed away the other day.

      9. The Shadows Of Knight...Gloria...from the original Dunwich 7" that coincidentally, I picked up at Speed City Records the other day.

      10. The Shadows Of Knight...Light Bulb Blues...from the Edsel greatest hits LP.

      11. The Black Rainbows...2 Day Rule...from their only CD, I Met This Chick....Toronto combo whom I saw at This Ain't Hollywood the other day, and put on an amazing show!! Well rehearsed, lots of harmony vocals, good between song banter and a whole lotta fun!

      145

The Black Rainbows at This Ain't Hollywood

      12. Shark Week...Get High...from their demo CD. DC based combo who played London recently.

      13. The Ballantynes...Velvet...from their latest 7" on La Ti Da Records and from Vancouver.

      14. THE...Grilled Cheese...from their only demo.

      15. Flying Squad....Health Food...from Mr Garager's Neighbourhood, a 1989 LP on OG Records that we compiled. Flying Squad were from London Ontario, mid 80's to early 90's band.

      146

      The Flying Squad, mid 80's

      16. Boy From Nowhere...Heart Full Of Soul....from Thee Cave Comes Alive, a 2004 LP on Action Records out of Greece which collected some of the 60's garage style music from the cassettes that came with What Wave zine. Boy From Nowhere were an early 80's combo from London Ontario who will be doing a reunion on October 5th at the Town And Country. It's a special birthday bash and i'll be the DJ.

      17. Bath Salts...recorded live on CHRW 8/16/13 on the Just Another Punk Show. And they will be playing tonite at APK in London Ontario.

      18. Shortpants Romance...Heatwave... demo from this Montreal combo.

      19. The Stolen Minks...Batman...from the Family Boycott CD, Halifax all girl combo.

      147

A couple of Stolen Minks on Radio WW Aug 31 2006

      20. The Weirdies...We Are The Weirdies...from their In 3D CD. Drummer Stacey Case has moved from Toronto to Hamilton and has just joined The noble Savages.

      21. Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper...Burn Down The Malls...from The Enigma Variations 2, a double LP that came out in 1987. In London we have a bit of a controversy over a possible new mall that is planned to be built by the major highway and will be where there is a forest, pond and a lot of wildlife. A lot of us are against it, yet our mayor and city council pushed approval through with the bullshit promise that it will create jobs. The local conservation authority was supposed to be involved and they have to give approval for projects like this to start. In this case, they were NOT consulted. Hence the playing of this and the next 2 songs.

      22. Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper...Where The Hell's My Money?...from the 1986 LP Frenzy.

      23. Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper....This Land Is Your Land...from the Root Hog Or Die LP.

Tim will be phoning in to talk about his Kick starter campaign to release a double LP of the greatest hits of The Marshmallow Overcoat. As we've known Tim for over 25 years, who knows how this conversation might go....it'll be fun for sure!

Radio What Wave Playlist Sept 26 2013.....Interview with Timothy Gassen of The Marshmallow Overcoat

      1. The Gruesomes....You're Not The Boss Of Me....from the Cave In CD from 2000. Since this show is an almost all garage special, we started with the band the world associates with the garage scene here in Canada, The Gruesomes, The Teen Tyrants of Trash!!

      181

3 of the 4 Gruesomes at WW HQ's, late 80's.

      2. The Gruesomes...What Wave...from Mr Garager's Neighbourhood LP from 1989. We used to start the show each week with this tune and it's only fitting we bring it out tonite.

      3. Marshamallow Overcoat...She's So Satisfyin'....from the Inner Groove LP from 1987. Tried to get the Frankenstein 5 cassette playing, but i couldn't get the cassette deck working. Luckily Adulis, our Program Director was around and pointed out my obvious screwup!!

      4. Marshmallow Overcoat...Echoes In Time....From the Try On....LP from 1987. At this point, we were joined by Timothy Gassen on the hotline from Tucson, to tell us all about the Kickstarter Campaign to raise funds to release a double LP, gatefold sleeved, coloured vinyl best of The Marshmallow Overcoat. We also talked about Timothy's Knight's Of Fuzz book, whose 3rd edition he hopes to have out later this year. This is the bible for 80's garage/psych fans!! And we talked about Tim's involvement in the WHA Hall Of Fame, as he's not only the president, but the founder. This is a Canadian show, so we had to talk some hockey from the good old days!!

      Here's a link to Timothy's kickstarter campaign

      http://kck.st/15q22tn

      5. Marshmallow Overcoat....Ahhhhhhhh.....recorded live at Call The Office April 11/1989. This was the only time The Marshmallow Overcoat played here in London Ontario.

      182

Timothy at Call The Office, 4/11/89.

      6. Purple Merkins...Get On This Plane....a 7" that came with WW zine 22. The Purple Merkins were The Marshmallow Overcoat with a few slight changes....fuzzier, noisier and a roving cast of members. There is an excellent best of Purple Merkins on Dionysus Records that is worth searching out.

      7. Boy From Nowhere....Train Kept A Rollin'....from Slippery's Club Hits, the cassette that came with WW #24. Available locally at Grooves, Speed City, LA Mood, The Village Idiot and Phantastica. The Boy From Nowhere were the first 80's garage band from London Ontario, formed in the early 80's after The Hippies broke up and lasted to about 1990. They are doing a special reunion gig on Saturday Oct 5th at the Town And Country Tavern for Kelly Hippys Birthday Bash! I'll be DJ'ing and all are invited to this special night!

      183

Boy From Nowhere....prmor shot, mid 80's

      8. Boy From Nowhere...Heart Full Of Soul....from Thee Cave Comes Alive LP on Action Records. This is a compilation LP of some of the garagiest tunes that were on the WW cassettes that came free with the zine.

      9. Boy From Nowhere....Hot Smoke And Sassafrass....recorded live at Langarth Bar and Grill Nov 1/1986.Boy From Nowhere got their name from the DMZ song of the same name.

      10. Boy From Nowhere...Shake....as above.

      11. UIC...Anything At All....from the Wiseman Sessions CD. UIC shared many  a stage with Boy From Nowhere.

      12. Flying Squad...The Letter....a mid 80's demo and like UIC, these guys shared many a stage with Boy From Nowhere.

      184

The Flying Squad 1989, Civitan Club

      13. The Mongrols...Play My Guitar...1987 demo from another band that shared many a stage with Boy From Nowhere.

      185

      The Mongrols late 80's

      14.The Hippies....Can Teens...from Slippery's Club Hits cassette.

      15. Tenement 13...Underworld...early 80's demo. This is the Hippies under a different name...why? Who knows.

      16. The Hippies....Nuclear Disaster....from their only 7".

      17. Young Fast And Scientific...You Told Me....a demo from this band that features Kelly Hippy on lead vocals.

      19. Lost Patrol....No Escape...from their first 7". Windsor based garage combo who played London many times.

      186

Lost Patrol at Call The Office May 12/1989. Notice that ultra suave T-shirt Dave is wearing!

      20. The Evil Hoodoos...Mary Had A Little Lamb....early 90's demo. Some of the Boy From Nowhere and Frankenstein5 were in this combo.

      21. The Evil Hoodoos...Beg and Plead....as above. This song appeared on a WW cassette at one time.

Big thanx to Timothy Gassen phoning in to yammer about his upcoming record, book and all things garage as he knows his stuff!!!

Radio What Wave Playlist October 3rd 2013

      1. Dragsville...Royal Drag....recorded live at Brennan's, 11/3/12 at their very first show. Saturday night at The St Regis is their CD release party. Congrats!!

      2. Marvelous Beauhunks....Who Said The Kids Are Alright?...from the CD of the same name. The Beauhunks play Hamilton Oct 13th at the Casbah.

      3. Hurricane and Able....Call On You...from their Last Temptation download. Local combo who still haven't played out live.

      4. Dustbin Flowers....Start Out With Nothing...another local combo who have played only a couple of gigs so far.

      5. Sean Byrnes....Rock'n'Roll Nights and Honky Tonk Days...from the Cold Beans and Broken Eggs CD. Recommended by Sue Weigand, AKA Suzie In Yer Ear of the infamous Oshawa fanzine of the same name. Some of our friendly competition back in the late 80's. If you can find any copies of In Yer Ear they're a great read!!

      6. catl....Ragged and Dirty...from their very first release, a cassette. We started a short special on catl as they are playing at Call The Office tonight here in London. It's full circle, as catl's first label was run by Al Cole, who lived in London back in the late 70's to mid 80's. Al started What Wave fanzine which we took over in 1984 and also had a radio show called Young Fast And Scientific, which was a big inspiration for this radio show! And catl call London their second home as they play here so much. Their first London show was part of our Battle Of the 2 Piece Bands when we were doing those about 5 years ago. They cheated, and had just added a 3rd member in Sarah, but we let them play anyway and they tore down the house!! Don't miss them tonite at Call The Office!

      9. Bloodshot Bill and His Hubcaps...Touch Me....from the Crazy Fever! CD. 2003. And this starts the Bloodshot Bill special part of the show as he is in town tonite at Call The Office, fresh from a tour of Japan. Bill started with a band, moving to a one man band as it's easier to tour and do things spontaneously. There's a full length interview w/Bill in an issue of Mongrel Zine outta Vancouver that is well worth reading for the whole story. Our first encounter w/Bill was Rena meeting him at the OG reunion show about 9 years ago in Toronto. Bill was playing the drums in Deja Voodoo as original drummer Tony was not to be found. We invited him down to London to play at the London Music Club and we've been great pals ever since.

      10. Bloodshot Bill....Riding In Your Car....recorded live at CHRW 5/25/07. Bill had a show at Call The Office that night, so i arranged to get him an interview and play live on Paul's Punk Rock show. Bill was in the studio and there were audio problems. Bill had to scream his answers because we couldn't hear him in the onair booth! That got fixed, then Bill couldn't hear his monitors so was playing without....once all the technical difficulties were ironed out, Bill played a few killer tunes, this being the first where he couldn't hear himself.

Congrats to The Marshmallow Overcoat! That record should see the light of day before the end of the year.

      23. The Above...Georgia Peach....NYC combo on Boppa Do Down Records.

      24. Angry Dragons....Love You Tonite....from their self titled CD on Transistor 66 Records.

      25. The Rezillos...Can't Stand My Baby....from a 7"....tried to play Let's Submerge by X Ray Spex but it didn't work for some reason as this was going to be a quick preview of what i would be playing on saturday night.

Either way, all donations are welcome and if you donate $20 or more, you get a receipt for your taxes. The money  raised is used to outfit the station with new equipment. Since i've been at CHRW (over 9 years) there have been many  changes to the onair studio, everything from the mixing board, wavecart, microphones, speakers, cassette deck have all been replaced/upgraded! This stuff  isn't cheap and you want us to sound as good as possible so keep a pledge in mind for next week!

      3. The Regulators....Satellite Of Love....live recording from Halloween 1979 at the Polish Hall. Local combo heavily influenced by Lou and The Velvet Underground. Had to play this, so i could turn over the Soundsville compilation LP.

      2. Forgotten Rebels....I Think Of Her...recorded live at the Cedar Lounge, 1980 and from the OPM CD. Forgotten Rebels play saturday night at Call The Office.

      234

The Forgotten Rebels, summer 1981. Chris Houston on far RHS

      3. Forgotten Rebels...Hello Hello...from This Ain't Hollywood LP on Star Records.

      4. Forgotten Rebels...You're A Rebel...from In Love With The System LP on Star Records.

      5. Chris Houston....Einsteins Brain's In Hamilton...from a 7" on Schizophrenic Records. Chris was in The Forgotten Rebels in the late 70's/early 80's. He's matured a little bit since.

      6. Arson...Social Eyes...from the Not Always About You CD. :Late 70's Toronto combo (they played The Cedar Lounge here in London Sept 78 and they were the first out of London punk band i ever saw) who have reformed to play and have fun. Current drummer is David Quinton Steinberg, lawyer to the musical stars.

      7. Cowlicks...I Wanna Be Your Man....from a CFMU (Hamilton's college radio station) download of all local combos! Obviously Hamilton has some cool combos that i wasn't aware of. And they have some really cool combos i am aware of; The Noble Savages, The Evil Eyes, The Squids and many more who aren't represented on this download.

      8. Monarch Project...A Better Part Of You...from the above CFMU download.

      9. Young Rival...Black Is Good...from the above CFMU download. Caught this trio live a few times and they put on a pretty good show. Formerly known as Ride Theory where they did the full on garagerock thing. Now they have a poppy Kinks inspired edge to their sound.

      10. The Mogs...Smile....mid 90's demo. They are reincarnated and will be playing at Doors Pub in Hamilton tonite.

      Untitled

Radio What Wave Playlist Dec 5 2013; Graphic Underground: London 1977-1990 Show

On this week’s broadcast, we did a special on the Graphic Underground: London 1977-1990 show as we had the curator of the museum exhibit, and author of the book, Brian Lambert on air as special guest.

Graphic Underground: London 1977-1990 was a McIntosh Gallery exhibit (curated by Brian Lambert) housed at the Forest City Gallery here in London from Oct to Dec 2012. The exhibit was the posters, zines and ephemera that was created here in London between 1977 and 1990, that accompanied the music scene happening here concurrently. Hundreds of posters, zines and other assorted artwork were dusted off and dug out of who knows where to be on display at the Forest City Gallery. Attendance records were set during the 6 week run of the exhibit.

      254

Opening night at Forest City Gallery

Accompanying the exhibit is a museum type book, with the same name as the art show. The book is set to be released this weekend at APK, between the hours of 2 and 7PM  as the author will be doing a book signing.. Well over 200 pages, this book is literally packed with hundreds of pictures of posters, zines and vintage pictures of some of the people involved in the scene.

And this edition of Radio WW is only music recorded in London between 1977 and 1990 with almost all of it being unreleased and never before broadcast on the radio or elsewhere.

      1. The Demics….New York City…recorded live in Toronto approx 1980. This is the song and the band that have put sleepy London Ontario on the map.

      1. The Demics….Oh Well…as above as NYC segued right into Oh Well.

      1. Uranus….5 Bucks….played live over the airwaves of CFNY in Toronto May 1980. Uranus are the starting point for punk/new wave bands in London as they were the first band to play at the Blue Boot (later called The Cedar Lounge, the only exclusive punk/new wave club in London and lasted from mid 1978 to May 1982) and opened the doors for others to play as it was proven that real rock’n’roll bands and their fans drink lots of beer, which make bar owners happy.

      1. Ralph Alfonso did a shout out here. Ralph was the doorman (and behind the scenes guy) at the first punk/new wave club in Canada, The Crash And Burn Club in Toronto Ontario. Ralph was/is the manager of The Diodes and along with Mike Neiderman, brought The Diodes to London for the very first punk/new wave show here, back in March 1977. Mike was the very first person to poster (and was subsequently fined by the police) for an event here in London as he was a printer and knew how to make a poster. He ended up printing many of the early posters used in London as well as most of the zines that came out of London. He also hosted The Demics first ever show at his loft and we consider him the grandfather of punk rock here in London Ontario.
      2.  255

Ralph Alfonso, Mike Neiderman and Liz Worth (author of Treat Me Like Dirt) in London 2/14/10

      1. Nihilst Spasm Band….This is A Test. And it was a test when Nihilst Spasm Band played as they built their own instruments and played free form experimental music long before it became trendy. Starting in the early 60’s, NSB had a weekly residence at the York Hotel (later named Call The Office) and the band consisted of a group of artists, some of which are famous Canada wide. They are listed as influences to many of the noise bands from around the world, including Sonic Youth as a couple of members have worked with the band. And NSB are big in Japan too!!  The children of NSB started to form their own art damaged bands in the late 70’s/early 80’s and some continue to this day.

      1. NFG…Bloodstains On The Carpet….recorded live somewhere in London, late 70’s. Non Functioning Gear, Not For Girls or more likely No Fucking Good (and here to prove it) as Keith Whittaker of The Demics would introduce this bunch of long haired cowboys. More aggression than finesse, the guitar player for this combo would write some hook laden songs that would follow the band as they became 63 Monroe in later years.

      1. Regulators….Sherry Share It…..recorded live at The Cedar Lounge in 1979. If Lou Reed had kids, this would be their band as the Velvet Underground and solo Reed sound emanate freely.

      1. The Stoves…So You Say….recorded live at The Cedar Lounge 1979. This band was miles ahead of the competition here in town, as they combined 3 part harmony into high energy songs. Covers of Hollies and Searchers tunes set the standard of finely crafted tunes.

      1. The Zellots….Sheik…1981 demo. They were one of the first to start a band in London, moved to Vancouver and reformed, then moved back to London with a new singer. This is the band that coulda and shoulda but luck wasn’t on their side. Full story is in Mongrel Zine 10 and 11.

The Zellots playing at a street festival, summer 1980

      1. Radio 4….Is God A Man…demo that I thought was recorded by Chris Richards (Generics) but Chris corrected me as it was a Peter Moore Silent Head Recording. Peter Moore (lived in London a short time while studying MIA at Fanshawe College and has since gone on to work for the big names) would bring a white Styrofoam head with wires coming out of the ears to gigs. It was easy to pick out the head sitting on a table in a crowded bar. Many recording were done by Peter Moore this way and culminated in the first London compilation, Domestic Animals. And back to Radio 4, they were often lumped into the Joy Division clone ranks but there was a lot more intensity and musicianship in this band that later became Sheep Look Up.

      1. Generics….Depresssion…1983 ghetto blaster demo. These kids came on the scene with a smart mouth attitude and proved themselves on their only record which is now on collectors lists worldwide.

      1. 63 Monroe…Completely Sweet…recorded live at The Cedar Lounge and aired on CHRW in 1980. I taped this from the radio (and many others, some cassettes still survive) and I remember from some of singer Scott’s comments that I was at this show. 63 Monroe evolved from NFG (see above), renamed themselves First Date for a short while, went back to 63 Monroe and they still play occasionally to this day. These guys took the glam rock route, wearing tons of makeup and their grandmother’s undergarments on stage.

Markii and Rooster looking completely sweet, Cedar Lounge 1982?

      1. The Hippies….He’s Frank….recorded live at Fryfogles1/16/84. Prior to The Cedar Lounge closing in May 1982, the bigger name bands started playing at Fryfogles (south side of Dundas St, where the Library is) due to the booking of Craig Deans and Dave Fellner who brought in many big names early on (The Stranglers, 999, John Cale, Simple Minds and more). The Hippies released one excellent single and recently reformed for the singers 50th birthday.

      1. The Terminals….Plastic World…from the We Killed Cassette. This band evolved from a late 70’s influenced sound to bring the newly evolving hardcore sound to London in 1981. They lasted many years and always put on a tight, energetic and fun show.

      1. Spiral Scratch…No Familiar Faces…recorded live at The Cedar Lounge in 1981 for the wedding of a couple of well known scene members. This wedding bash brought back former Londoner Marcy Saddy with her latest combo from NYC, Certain General for the first of several visits.  Spiral Scratch evolved from The Sinners and stuck to an early 80’s UK punk sound and released one LP.

      1. Dead Rabbits….Waiting Around…recorded live at The Cedar Lounge 2/9/82. Proof that anyone can form a band and get up on stage and get a crowd up and dancing! Some members went on to the biker rock combo, The Flying Squad.

      1. Napalm Babys….Bullet…recorded live in Ottawa, 7/11/85. Another of the early bands to go in a hardcore direction, starting in 1981 and evolving with a different singer later on. Members of this band went on  to Bassbag, Schmagpies and many others.

      1. Naplalm Babys…Gun Control….as above.

      1. UIC….Telephone….recorded live at Call The Office 3/16/85. Recorded by Wayne Fisher (Napalm Babys) on video and you may see some of this show on Youtube with your DJ up front dancing like a fool! UIC were from Exeter, just north of London where they could get those fine fine Detroit stations and that became a big influence on several people from that area. UIC formed in 1982 and lasted into the early 90’s after a move to Toronto. Not really punk, metal or garage, these guys were loved by many and had a Huge following, releasing a couple of LP’s and CD’s.

And that’s a wrap as we’ve run outta time, but certainly not tunes as we’ll continue in this direction next week. Huge Thanx to Brian Lambert for taking the time to come on air and talk about the Graphic Underground: London 1977-1990 book. Anyone with even a passing interest in this, is well advised to pick up the book as it’s sure to be sold out.

Thanx for all the phone-ins, emails, facebook messages and Heys!!!!

All pictures from What Wave Archives....please ask before posting elsewhere. No postcards please!!!

      Untitled

Radio What Wave Playlist Dec 12/2013….Another all London Ontario show, 1978 -1995

Part 2 of an all London, almost all unreleased material show. Originally planned as a 90m show, at the last minute it was extended to 2.5 hours, hence multiple songs by the some of the bands.

      1. The Demics…Takin’ My Time….live in Toronto approx 1980.

      1. Uranus….Around and Around….recorded live at Kellys (later to become Bullwinkles, then Hard Times and much later the Salt Lounge) this was broadcast by local AM radio station CKSL approx 1980.

      1. Boy From Nowhere…Teenage Head…demo from about 1986.

      1. Redline…Brand New Cadillac…recorded live at Fryfogles, June 1983.

      1. Carolyn and The Wayouts…How Do You Know?....basement demos from a band that probably never played out, let alone got radio airplay. Could be a Blood Brothers member or 2, maybe a Hippie…

      1. Carolyn and The Wayouts…Let’s Dance….as above.

      1. Carolyn and The Wayouts…High School…as above.

      1. The Finks… You Made Me Smile…demo from 4/29/1987

      1. Mongrols…Day She Died…late 80’s demo. Not to be confused with the present Mongrels (notice spelling difference) led by Robert Village Idiot. We really like both of these local combos!

      1. Captain Scarlet and The Mysterons….Wednesday…demo from 1989 and this may or may not be the actual title of the song. Guitarist/vocalist Tom Dunphy is presently in The Rizdales.

      1. Captain Scarlet and The Mysterons…What Is Yours…as above.

      1. Ukase…Jealousy…from the Lost Tapes CD. This song was originally done by The Zellots, and at this point in the life of Ukase, there were 2 former Zellots in the band.

      1. Sci-Phonics…Revenuer Man…recorded live at Key West Café 3/11/87. This band existed for many years with a few personnel changes, with Frank Ridsdale as the only constant.

      1. Workpants…Come On…recorded live at Key West Café 12/4/86. This was some of the Sci-Phonics….London has a very incestuous musical scene.

      1. Frank Ridsdale…Shake Some Action…recorded live on Radio What Wave 10/16/2010. This was a special one time only version of this song, just for me!

      1. Frank Ridsdale…Bang Bang….as above. Check out any of Frank’s current combos….Hoodoo 2, Slugfest and the occasional reunion of Sci-Phonics and/or Uranus.

      1. Hank and Frank….Nancy Sinatra…late 80’s demo and one of my all time fave songs from London Ontario.

      1. Tuerto Loco….Glacier….recorded live on Radio What Wave 5/12/2011. This combo features Hank of Hank and Frank (see above).

      1. Tuerto Loco….Robert Q Public…as above.

      1. Viv Sun and The Black Holes…Love Me Baby   early 90’s demo of this band that evolved into The Black Holes and still play out once in awhile.

      1. Teenage Head…Picture My Face….recorded live at The Spoke and Rim, on the campus of Western University and played live over the airwaves of CHRW 1980.

And that’s a wrap, thanx for all the phone-ins, emails, facebook messages and Heys!! Here’s more proof that London has a musical history! And don’t forget to pick upGraphic Underground: London 1977-1990 book that is now out. And thanx to everyone that came out to the book release party last Saturday night at APK. It was a blast!!

Lots of technical glitches on this show....almost all out of my control. The computer that controls the commercials locked up as the commercials were playing to start the show. Had to hard boot the computer twice to get it running, then the commercial program fizzled the first time i tried it. Radio What Wave Playlist, Jan 9th 2014

      1. Evil Farm Children....Hangover....from the Evilling CD from 2008. This was going to be the opener for our post New Years show on Jan 2nd, which didn't happen due to complications.

      2. Hurricane and Able....Who's That Girl....from The Last Temptation download. Hurricane and Able make their live debut Saturday at Wrongbar in Toronto. It's a half London/Toronto combo who will hopefully bring the show to London if all goes well at this debut show.

      3. Dynamite Pussy Club...Nutbush City Limits....recent demo this UK combo sent us. They also did a Radio WW Session just over a year ago and have our seal of approval.

      4. Los Readymade...Cat Blue...from the Automar CD. Brand new from this Argentinian combo who are on the Garagepunk Hideout.

      5. Drug Dealerz....Mayor Ford....demo from this Toronto combo who are also on the Garagepunk Hideout.

      6. Dave Campbell...The Time Is Now...from Finding The Real CD. Brand new London artist, who recorded this CD by himself at home. This particular song blew me away when i first heard it. Picked this up at Grooves Records here in London, it was a freebie with the fliers up at the front of the store. This was the world radio premier for this CD.

      7. Faces....Pool Hall Richard....from their Greatest Hits CD. This kinda reminds me of Dave Campbell, the track prior.

      8. Jim Jones Revue...Elemental.....from the Burning Your House Down CD. UK combo who will be at Call The Office next thursday as their first Canadian date on this tour. This is a show you don't want to miss!!

      9. The Everly Brothers...Rip It Up....from the LP of the same name on Ace Records. This set goes out to Phil Everly who passed away the other day.

      10. The Everly Brothers...Poor Jenny...from the All They Had To Do Was Dream LP on Rhino. This demo track has some Phil and Don audio interaction prior to the start of the track.

      11. The Everly Brothers....Problems....from the Rip It Up LP. All 3 songs together tell a nice 50's teenage story.

      12. The Mogs....Run Like Hell....from the about to be released CD from this Hamilton based 3 piece. There's a London Ontario connection here, with singer/guitarist/sometime bassist Rob Munro, who was in London combos Frankenstein 5, The Mood and Scratching Post. Right around this time, Rupert Orton, guitarist for The Jim Jones Revue, called in to talk about the big show that was happening at Call The Office, here in London. Radio What Wave Playlist January 23/2014

      1. Legend Killers....Man You Gotta Go....from a late 80's demo I found hidden on the end of a cassette.

      2. The Squids...People Food...demo from this Hamilton duo. They are playing with The Mogs at Doors Pub on Saturday night.

      3. Noble Savages...Fire In the World...demo from this Hamilton combo who just happen to be playing with The Mogs on Saturday night.

      4. The Mogs....Hate....from their about to be released CD, El Mogamundo. The CD is on that What Wave label, so you know it's gotta be cool. The Mogs have their CD release party at Doors Pub in Hamilton on Saturday night.

      5. The Mogs...Run Like Hell...as above.

      6. The Mogs...Swamp Love...as above.

      7. The Mogs...Bored...as above.

      8. The Mogs...Thunder Lightning....as above.

      9. catl....Gotta Thing For You....from their Soon This Will All Be Gone LP. catl are opening for Blackie and The Rodeo Kings at Aeolian Hall on Sunday night.

      10. catl....Get Outta My Car....as above.

      11. catl ....Workin' Man's Soul....from the With The Lord For Cowards You Will Find No Place record.

12.Blackie and The Rodeo Kings...Stoned...from the BARK CD. They will be headlining at Aeolian Hall on sunday night.

      13. Blackie and The Rodeo Kings...Something On My Mind...from the Let's Frolic Again CD. Teenage Head cover, but you already knew that.

      14. Blackie and The Rodeo Kings...49 Tons....from the Kings Of Love CD. I just love the lyrics in this one as it creates so much tension and you can almost feel the world coming down on you.

There was supposed to be a hockey game starting at this time. Our News Director wasn't told about the change to 7:30 and he kept asking me to play for a few more minutes as he was sure the hockey game was supposed to be starting. Then there was a big argument in the background as some piece of equipment wasn't working and it was going to screw up the game broadcast. As always, mass confusion makes for a better radio show....hahahaha

      15. Junkhouse...Praying For The Rain....from a promo CD that came in a box of beer, hence the cheesy intro to this one. Tom Wilson, who is in Blackie and The Rodeo Kings was vocalist/guitarist for this combo.

      16. Junkhouse...Hello Mystery...from a 1992 zine called Cool Soundzine, that came out of Hamilton. As did almost all of the bands on tonite's show.

      17. Junkhouse...Jet Trash....from the Fuzz CD. There's some killer guitar sonics on this release and believe it or not, this combo got lots of play on the local yokel FM stations in sleepy London Ontario....and they would pack Call The Office regularly and singer Tom Wilson would yell out 'What Wave' as he spotted us in the crowd and the crowd wouldn't have a clue what he was talking about....hahaha...

      18. Florida Razors...Let's Go...from the Beat Music LP. Hamilton based rock'n'roll band that had Tom Wilson as vocalist and guitarist.

      19. Florida Razors...New York City....as above.

      20. Radio 4....I Don't Wanna Go To New York City....local combo from the early 80's and it's on Slippery's Club Hits, the cassette that comes with What Wave 24, available locally and at Star Records in Oshawa.

      21. The Only Ones....Another Girl, Another Planet.....Peel demo from Apr 1978....hear the difference between this version and the released version? This one is shorter, no keyboards and slightly more abrasive guitars.

      22. The Hippies...Can Teens....from Slippery's Club Hits and had to cut this off as the hockey game was about to start.

Thanx to everyone for listening, especially those that listen each and every week!! Thanx for all the phone calls, emails, facebook messages and Heys!!

      1. Dave Campbell...Time Is Now....from the Finding The Real CD....local artist who is giving away (yes, you read that correct) his CD at Grooves Records right here in London! And this is a great song to start tonite's action!

      2. Los Readymade...Cat Blue...from the Automar CD. Argentina garagepunks who are on the garagepunk hideout.

      3. Drug Dealerz....Mayor Ford....from a demo, and these guys are also on the garagepunk hideout. Mayor Ford's been up to more lies and shit this week, so this song is certainly appropriate.

      4. The Mogs...Run Like Hell....from the El'Mogamundo CD on What Wave Records....Burlington combo who we really like! Next show is at This Ain't Hollywood in Hamilton on Sat Feb 8th w/Saffron Sect and BB Guns.

      5. The Basements...Stop Rolling....from a brand new Lost In Tyme 7". Greek combo who are on the label that is also a really cool zine!

      6. The Byrds... Bells Of Rhymny....this goes out to Pete Seeger who passed away this week. A highly influential individual in the world of music...along w/Woody Guthrie, these 2 paved the way for folk, then folk rock and protest music in the early 60's.

      7. The Byrds....Turn Turn Turn....as above.

      8. The Byrds....I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better....had the Byrds LP's out and just had to play this tune...for Cyril Jordan whom we've had the pleasure of meeting twice in the past couple of years. Flamin' Groovies

      9. Kumari...Time Is Now....from another Lost In Tyme 7". This band is from the UK and features a regular Shindig contributor in Phil Istine.

      10. Monarch Project...A Better Part Of You....from a recent CFMU compilation. CFMU is based out of McMaster University in Hamilton Ontario, a radio station that has been very receptive to What Wave projects over the years.

      11. Hurricane And Able....Call On You...from The Last Temptation download. Combo that features local musician Shawn Larouge and is based in Toronto...played their first live gig a week or 2 ago and it went over really well.

      12. Frankenstein 5...It's A Cryin' Shame...from the CHRW London Underground CD from the early 90's. Wasn't planning on playing this, but it's relevant as it features a present day Mog member plus it sounded pretty damn good!

      13. Spool....Entrepreneur's Walk....as above and a request.

      14. Jim Jones Revue....It's Gotta Be About Me....from The Savage Heart LP. JJR hit London a coupla weeks back and man were they on a rampage!! Pure rock'n'rol in 2014 is a rare and much needed commodity!! If you ever get the chance, catch this band live!

      15. Otis Redding and Carla Thomas....Tramp...from a brand new double CD that comes with the Oxford American Magazine. This is the music issue and features the music of Tennessee.

      16. Ashley Cleveland...Rockin' In A Weary Land...as above. This was also a Grammy nominee, which proves there is some cool music at the Grammys! I've been getting more into gospel music the last coupla years, so you may be hearing more of this overlooked genre of music.

      17. Jehosphat Blow...Oh Ya Oh Ya...from a self released download and the start of our Chinese New Year special. Jehosphat is a one man band, currently living in China and recording in his home.

      18. The Heartbreakers...Chinese Rocks...from the LAMF LP....like a motherfucker!!!

      19. Rodney and the Blazers...Oriental Rock...from the Chop Suey Rock Volume 2 compilation CD.

      22. Stolen Minks...Consecutives...from the High Kicks CD from 2008. This was their last release and we were lucky enough to have the Stolen Minks as guests a coupla times on Radio WW.

      23. Little Foot Long Foot...King Hipster....from the Harsh Words CD. 2 piece combo outta Toronto.

      24. Living Deadbeats....Theme Song....from the Hey Girl CD. Vancouver based combo that features former Londoner Pete Fiend on bass. They came through town twice 2 summers back.

      25. Poisened Aeros...T Rex...from the Turbulence CD. Hamilton combo w/some Syl Sylvain connections, who by the way is coming back this way in a month or 2.

      26. Maow...Sucker...from the Unforgiving Sounds Of CD on Mint Records...Vancouver combo who came to London many years back....and where i first heard the term GBG....hahaha

Today's secret word is 5, so everytime you hear the secret word, SCREAM!!! Shades of Peewee's Playhouse as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Beatles on Ed Sullivan, go back 55 years to the day the music died and 5 years ago our mentor Lux Interior left the planet.

      2. Legend Killers...Rippin' It Up...from the Boot 2 The Head CD that was recorded live at Call The Office back in 2005. 8. The Cramps....5 Years Ahead Of My Time...from The Cramps Totally Destroy Seattle!!! Ivy's favourite bootleg of The Cramps and the very first one i bought, right here in London at Records On Wheels. And speaking of records, Sunday at Centennial Hall is the London Record Show....i'll be at CHRW table hawking What Wave 24 and the Graphic Underground: London 1977-1990 book.

      9. The Cramps....Don't Eat Stuff Off The Sidewalk...from the Psychedelic Jungle LP. I learned all i know from listening to Cramps records....

      10. The Beatles...Bad Boy....from a Mexican 4 song 7" EP.

      11. The Beatles...Dizzy Miss Lizzy....as above.

      12. The Beatles...She Loves You....from a Japanese pressing of Meet The Beatles....I was just a little gaffer in grade one when The Beatles played Ed and didn't see the show. Next day, on the way home from school on the bus, all the kids were screaming ' She Loves You YA YA YA!' over and over!! Warped my little mind and I haven't been the same since!!

      13. Buddy Holly....Down The Line....from the double record Rocks set on Charly Records. This was recorded in 1955, some extra instrumentation was added in 1964 by Norman Petty and now you get to hear it!! Absolute Killer and this is probably where The Black Holes found the version that they cover.

      14. Ritchie Valens...Cry Cry Cry....from the Ritchie LP on Del Fi. Killer guitar work by a young Ritchie Valens.

      15. Big Bopper...Big Boppers Wedding....the flip of Chantilly Lace on Mercury. Love the maniacal laught on this track!

Radio What Wave Playlist February 13/2014

This show was only supposed to run for an hour due to a hockey game, but equipment wasn't co-operating and the hockey game didn't end up being broadcast. Hence the long songs toward the end of the show, hoping/assuming they would get things working and I would be taken off air quickly for the hockey broadcast. So no hockey game and the 5 listeners that were going to listen to the game were disappointed! Maybe they dug the 30m of cool music while waiting...hahahahaha....

      1. Almighty Rhombus....She Didn't Want Me....from a demo they sent us as they are back in town tonite at the Black Shire Pub.

      2. Dustbin Flowers...Start Out With Nothing...from their self titled CD. The CD release party is tonite at Fitzrays.

      3. The Standstills....Black Betty....from the Human Element CD. The Standstills are at Call The Office on saturday night.

      4. The Standstills...Blues Radio....a demo they sent us a few years back, right around the time we had them on for a live to air.

      5. Tuerto Loco....Nancy Sinatra....from a live to air 5/12/11. Tuerto Loco are playing the St Regis on Saturday night.

      6. Bitchlove....Rita...from the brand new Stigma 7". Lathe cut, square and on clear PVC!! And limited to 50 handnumbered copies!!

      7. Sphinxs....Bad Head...from the split 12" w/Miesha and The Spanks. Their last show is tonite in Toronto.

      8. Pack AD....Big Shot...from Do Not Engage, their brand new release. They are coming to the APK on March 17th, St Patrick's Day.

      9. The Mogs...Run Like Hell...from their El'Mogamundo CD on What Wave Records.

      10. Kumari...She Was Mine...from a new 7" on Lost In Tyme Records. This is a UK band on a Greek label, which is an offshoot of the great fanzine of the same name.

      11. Sound Xplosion....Every Day and Every Night....from another 7" on the Lost In Tyme Label!

      12. Marshmallow Overcoat...13 Ghosts....from the 26 Ghosts CD. There's a double LP of the best of The Marshmallow Overcoat that is going to be out any day....records are at the pressing plant as this is being typed out!

      13. XTC....Homo Safari...the flip side of Life Begins At The Hop, which is what i thought i was about to play.

      14. Phil Upchurch....You Can't Sit Down....from a compilation LP called From Route 66 to The Flamingo on Stateside Records. A mod, R&B, soul, blues compilation with a lot of fine tunes on it....released in 1988.

      15. XTC...At The Hop...from the 7" mentioned above...from 1978 and on clear vinyl. Picked this up at the record show here in London.

16.The Wild Ones....Come Around....from a brand new 7" on La Ti Da Records outta Victoria British Columbia. This is part of their singles club which I joined last year, and so far there's been some mighty fine records that have arrived due to that deal.

      17. Needles/Pins....Outta This Place....as above and on La Ti Da Records!

      18. Steve Adamyk Band...High Above...as above. Believe this one might be sold out already, but get in touch with La Ti Da if you're interested in it.

      19. Roxy Music...Mother Of Pearl....from the Stranded LP from 1974. This track used to get airplay on FM rock stations back in the day, they mixed it in with all the heavier crap they played and it was like a breath of fresh air back then!

      20. Dave Campbell....The Time Is Now....from the Finding The Real CD. New local CD you can grab for free at Grooves Records. I really really dig this song and it reminds me of that early 70's sound that was coming out of some of the cooler UK combos!

      21. Roxy Music....A Song For Europe....from the Stranded LP....I had to play some longer songs around here because it kept sounding like they were going to get the hockey broadcast going, and it would take over the airwaves. But no, you got stuck with me and my outsider noise!

      22. Shanker And Romps...I Wanna Kiss....from the Pancakin' CD. Duo from Ottawa that sound like they should be recording cool kids tunes! We had them in town and coupla years ago and they are so much fun live!

Radio What Wave Playlist Feb 20/2014: Psychos and Other Unusual Canadians Part 1

Welcome to Part 1 of Psychos and Other Unusual Canadians....judging by the overabundance of phone calls this week, you people are either digging this show or you realize that you're as much of an unusual Canadian as I am. Hoping for the latter. Well dig in, this is only the tip of the iceberg of what's in the WW Archives!

      1. The Gruesomes....Psycho....live at Larry's in Toronto, 3/29/1986. This was the Easter Og Weekend Special and the first time The Gruesomes were allowed out of their Montreal homebase. Also on the show that night were Deja Voodoo and Chris Houston, both of whom appear later in this playlist. And this was one of the few times I heard The Gruesomes play Psycho live...went through a ton of live tapes looking for another version and came up with nothing.

      2. The Sadies... Black Sheep....from the Tales Of The Rat Fink Soundtrack CD. Ya, I've played this song on Radio WW many times as it sums up my life perfectly!

      3. Nihilist Spasm Band....No Canada....1967 flexi and re-issued on CD 1996. 1967 was Canada's Centennial year, lots and lots of celebrations and this was the anti! Totally off the wall, artnoise combo who used to play weekly in London Ontario, that are huge in the world of noise.

      4. Orie Hitt Machine....Killer Inside Me....totally loony from London Ontario.

      5. The Spoons...After The Institution....1980 7" from this combo who went mainstream new wave/synth/dance in the mid 80's. Remember seeing them at The Cedar Lounge here in London back in the late 70's and any song about being put away fit right into this episode.

      6. Crash Kills 5....Special School....7" from this combo that morphed into Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet....songs about being special fit right into the late 70's/early 80's musical era.

      7. Botched Suicides....Nuthouse Inn...from the Ottawa Gaga compilation. Another song about being put away...

      8. Mainline...Brain Damage...from the Canada Our Home And Native Land LP. This one prominently features Joe Mendelson, presently an artist living, literally living on the fringes of society. We'll be hearing more from Joe on future episodes!

      9. David Clayton Thomas....Brainwashed....from the Made In Canada Volume 3 compilation. David fronted Blood Sweat And Tears, a major band in the late 60's/early 70's and one of the first to do the jazz rock thing. This was before he became brainwashed, and was a struggling artist on the Toronto scene that also spawned Neil Young amongst others.

      10. Chris Houston....Surfin' On  Heroin...from the Hate Filled Man LP. This is the only LP that i own that comes with one square foot of astro turf!! Ya, one square foot of plastic grass! Chris was in the Forgotten Rebels, where he composed this tune and has  been doing music ever since. Caught him live this past summer and his take on the world is totally hilarious!! We'll be hearing more from Chris in episodes to come.

      11. Fridge Magnets...Hypodermic Beach...from a late 80's demo and this song also appeared on a WW cassette. If you only learn one thing from listening to Radio WW, it better be; Don't Do Heroin! I repeated that twice during this show and hope everyone got the message.

      12. Deja Voodoo...Surfin' On Mars...from the Worst Of LP. Deja Voodoo were a duo from Montreal who invented sludgeabilly, formed their own record company that released some of the best music to come out of Canada, became stars of college radio and promptly broke up in 1990 when  they turned 30. And we still miss them after all these years! We'll be hearing more from Deja Voodoo as well as many of the OG Records stars!

      13. Von Drats....Dratsylvania....from the Dratsylvania CD. From 2010, and these characters would dress up for every show (quite often in matching costumes) and play some of the wildest surf, monster and 60's garage punk you've ever heard! Quite often they had a character (The Canadian Wolfman) dressed up in costume to introduce them and invoke the crowd into a frenzy! If these guys had been around in the 80's, they would have been on OG Records!

      14. Transylvania 500....Go 500!...from their only 7" on Wolf Beat Records. Count Suckula on the keyboards and Wolfboy on the drums...either a budget version of The Mummies or 2 totally whacked out individuals as they would run around the crowd when playing live shows and do just about anything for laughs! Another band that woulda been on OG Records if they were around in the 80's!

      15. Transylvania 500....Death Drag...as above. Had to play both songs on this 7" as they are both equally stupid. Just the way i like my music!

      16. The Dead Bolts....Torture Chamber...from a 7". This one is totally over the top whacko...just listen to those lyrics! And it's on  Coffin Records, outta Hamilton Ontario.

      17. Cardboard Brains....Babies Run My World...from the And Now Live From Toronto, The Last Pogo. Aptly named band for this show and I've loved this song since first hearing it way too many years ago! This was the Cardboard Brains at their finest!!

Hope you dug the loonies tonite and we'll have more on part 2 in 2 weeks time! Next week we've gotta pay tribute to Marty Thau, who worked with ? and The Mysterians when they broke with 96 Tears, worked with the NY Dolls at the beginning, The Ramones at their infancy, early Fleshtones, early Real Kids, Suicide and sooooooo many others!! A true innovator in the music that we dig!  And a trib to Bob Devo who passed away this week, another highly influential band that we all laughed at when they first came out. Then after many listens of their first LP, most of us agreed, these guys are genius!! Yet, most probably know them as an insult to punk rockers back in the day. How many times did a carload of heavy metal mutants yell "Hey Devo" to you when you were minding your own business! Way too many times for me.

And thanx for all the phone calls....way too many times there was more than one call coming in at a time on this show, so I missed many calls, sorry, I'm just a one man show! And thanx for all the emails, facebook likes, facebook messages and Heys!!

      Radio What Wave Playlist.....Feb27/2014

      1. Dave Campbell....My Way...from the Finding The Real CD. Local artist and you can get his CD for free at Grooves Records here in London Ontario.

      2. Heart Attack Kids....Have Heart....from their brand new download called Hooligans....local 2 piece.

      3. The Mogs....Bored....from the El Mogamundo CD on What Wave Records. 3 piece outta Hamilton/Burlington who are presently looking for a drummer.

      4. The Connexions....Against The Tide....from their brand new CD called Connect Four. From Newfoundland and connected with these guys via the garagepunk hideout.

      5. Frankie And Jimmy....Let It Rock....from their soon to be released LP, Scream The Blues. Hamilton based duo who play out a fair bit.

      6. Nazi Drugs...Atomic Terrorist...from the Dawn On Me CD. Penssylvania duo who have their own little label called Martian Ambassador Records.Another connection via the garagepunk hideout.

      7. Grim Imperials....Morningside Lane....from the Martian Ambassador comp Terrible Things Always Happen.

      8. Ding Dongs....Are You Ready?...from the Rang Tang Ding Dong LP on Norton Records. For those that don't know, this is Bloodshot Bill and Mark Sultan's 2 piece project.

9.Devo....Jocko Homo....from the Stiff 7" and goes out to Bob Devo who passed away last week.

      10. Devo....Uncontrollable Urge....from the Are We Not Men? LP. Never ever understood this, but metal heads used to cruise by people they thought were punks and yell out of their car 'Hey Devo!!!' Just doesn't make sense, but then neither did metalheads back in those days.

      11. NY Dolls.... 7 Day Weekend....from A Hard NIght's Day CD on Norton, the Marty Thau demos that they shopped around to the major labels. Probably my favourite NY Dolls track of all time, not only for it's idealism, but the way they plow through it, bringing a whole new life to this Gary US Bonds tune! And this is the start of our very short trib to Marty Thau, a HUGE influence on the music that we here at WW HQ's listen to!!

      12. NY Dolls....Back In The USA....as above.

      13. Suicide....Rocket USA....from their debut on Red Star Records (Marty Thau's label).

      14. The Ramones....Basement....1975 demo produced by Marty Thau.

      15. The Ramones....Boyfriend....as above...

      16. The Fleshtones....Shadow Line...from Marty Thau Presents 2 x 5 LP. God fucking damn....what can you say about a guy that was at the very beginnings of the above bands!!! HUGE INFLUENCE on music back then AND what we listen to, to this very day!! Ran outta time due to the hockey game, but i was going to play some Real Kids from their first LP, again on Marty's label, Red Star. There is a book of Marty's memoirs being prepared and hopefully his death doesn't put a kibosh to that.

Thanx to all that tuned in and for all the crazy phone calls, emails, facebook messages and Heys in passing! As always we ran outta time but not tunes.

Next week we carry on with part 2 of Psychos and Other Unusual Canadians!! And it's a full 90m show, so we'll be playing some far out tunes....including Bloodshot Bill who is playing at Call The Office on Tues March 11th!!
