Radio What Wave Playlist January 21/2016

      1. The Mongrels....All Systems Go....demo from 2013 that's been re-mastered and they might be playing somewhere this weekend. Thought i saw a poster, but can't find it now.

      2. Stone Soul....Fire In My Veins....brand new demo from the combo formerly known as Vintage Experience. Our pal Ryan In The Red (used to do In The Red on CHRW and now does the Rock City Madness podcast) plays guitar and sings in this band.

      3. Split Squad....Now Hear This....brand new and features members of The Plimsouls, Fleshtones and drummer for just about everyone, Clem Burke!!!

      4.  Flamin' Groovies....Shake Some Action....live recording from NPR Radio 1/6/2016. There's 3 or 4 other songs they recorded as well and sound just as good!

      5. Rolling Stones....Diddly Daddy....very first recordings from 1963. This is the beginning of our Georgio Gomelsky special as he passed away very recently. Georgio started the Crawdaddy Club which is where the Rolling Stones first played and got their most known lineup together. When they first started, Georgio had to bribe people with free meals to get them out to see the Stones. After a short time, the Stones were selling the place out and were too big to play here. He also managed the band prior to Andrew Loog Oldham taking over the reins.

      6. Rolling Stones...Roadrunner....as above, both songs are on a bootleg called Bright Lights Big City.

      7. The Yardbirds....Smokestack Lightning.....recorded live at The Crawdaddy Club 1963. The Yardbirds took over residency of The Crawdaddy Club and Georgio Gomelsky proceeded to manage them and produce their albums. He also gave Eric Clapton the Slowhand nickname that has stuck with him for life!

      8. The Animals....Boom Boom....1964 Decca Audition Recordings. Georgio Gomelsky invited The Animals down to London to play his club and arranged for The Yardbirds to play Newcastle, which was the home of The Animals, getting both bands much needed exposure.

      9. Steampacket...Can I Get A Witness....from the Steampacket LP. UK supergroup arranged by Long John Baldry that featured Brian Auger, Julie Driscoll, a very young Rod Stewart and others, produced by Georgio Gomelsky.

      10. Julie Driscoll....Tramp....from the Open LP that also featured Brian Auger and was on Georgio Gomelsky's label, Marmalade Records and of course, he produced it. From here, he started to work with more progressive, experimental and jazz oriented combos that aren't really in the vein of this show. Once a band became popular and started to attract a lot of attention Georgio Gomelsky lost interest as he was more into the small club type of band. He later moved to NYC which is where he resided until passing and worked with many upcoming bands. His eccentricities often worked against him.

      11. Mott The Hoople.....All The Young Dudes....from All The Young Dudes from 1972. This goes out to Buffin, (Dale Griffin) longtime and original drummer for Mott who passed away earlier this week. And we'll also send it out to Bowie as he wrote this song for Mott and it saved their career!

      12. Mott The Hoople....All The Way From Memphis....from Mott 1973. Mott The Hoople also featured vocalist Ian Hunter who went on to a successful solo career after his Mott days.

      13. Ralph...I'll Remember....from the Sophisticated Boom Boom CD 1997. Ralph is a long time music industry guy that's done just about everything (except have a hit record) and presently has an art/music gallery in Montreal called BBAM Gallery that host cool events.

      14. Little Games....Muswell Hill Ray....from the Guitar Damage CD and obviously dedicated to Ray Davies from The Kinks. Vancouver based 60's influenced combo that features Tom Harrison on vocals, who coincidentally sang on the previous song.

      15. The Hypnotics....Isn't It Fun....from the Modern Art Entertainment CD. Windsor based combo who are about to release this on vinyl very soon. And you can hear bassist David Konstantino on CJAM (Windsor Ontario University Radio) every Saturday night at 7PM with his Revolution Rock radio show!

      16. Don't Touch The Dancers....Don't Be Shy.....download from a local combo who have since broken up unfortunatly. Some nice glam and powerpop influences in some of their stuff!

      17. Sir John A MacDonalds.....Quit School....from the Quit School CD....Ottawa based garagepunkers who are all named after Canada's first Prime Minister.

      18. The Minstrels....It Isn't True....from the Come Out To Play EP on What Wave Records. Quebec City based garage pop combo who moved around a lot after releasing this, their first record back in 1989.

      19. Whipping Wind....Don't Get Into It....from a 7" and is local powerpop from a couple of years back. This is also available on a 4 track CD.

      20. The Finks...Can't Say No....from a 7" and more local powerpop, this time from the late 80's and these guys did quite well on local AM radio here in town.

      21. Second Thoughts....Wound Up....from a 7" and even more local powerpop, this time from the very early 80's. Remember seeing this band at the Cedar Lounge, maybe The Firehall and maybe Fryfogles way back then.....had to fade this out as we ran out of time but not tunes.

Thanx for all the phone calls, facebook messages, emails and Heys!!!  Back again next week with more noise to annoy!

Radio What Wave Playlist January 28/2015   Ugly Ducklings Special

      1. The Madcaps....Something You Got...from their recent Hot Sauce release on Howlin' Bananas Records. From France and this song starts the show with some nice soul sounds!

      2. The Madcaps...Too Big For Your Boots....as above and more of a garage type sound that you would expect from this band. You'll be hearing lots more from this one!

      3. Harry Violet and the Sharks....Dance At The Korova....brand new 7" on Dirty Water Records, one of the most prolific garage/rock/trash/whatever labels out there!

      4. US Depressed....Motorized....demo that features Orin Portnoy, former member of The Outta Place, a teen garagepunk combo from NYC's mid 80's garage scene.

      5. Dead Boys....Sonic Reducer....from the Younger Louder and Snottier LP on Bomp Records. Guitarist Cheetah Chrome is in this area for the weekend with shows in Hamilton and Toronto.

      6. dRivin' bEats....Your Man Is Back....brand new download from this band that rarely plays out.

      7. Los Bengala....La Caza...from the Incluso Festivos release on Dirty Water Records. 2 piece combo from Spain that really rock out!

      8. Los Bengala....Se A Donde Voy....as above.

      9. Immortal Lee County Killers....Boom Boom....from These Bones Will Rise To Love You Again CD from 2005.

      10. Hiroshima Hearts...The Well....from their self released CD from last year.

      11. Pacanomad....Heaven Can Wait....from the Restless CD from 2014.

      12. Sheep Look Up....Jumper....from their self released cassette from the early 80's.

      13. The Demics....Queen Bitch....recorded live at The Cedar Lounge here in London Ontario in 78/79.  Proof that David Bowie influenced our local punk scene.

      14. XTC....Statue Of Liberty.....from the Waxworks: Some Singles 1977-1982 LP.

      15. Talking Heads....Pulled Up....from Talking Heads 77 LP,  prior to Eno working with the band.

      16. The Scenics...I'm Hurt....from the recent In The Summer CD, Studio Recordings 1977-78. There's definitely some similarities in The Scenics and the 2 combos played prior....that art pop thing!!

      17. The Ugly Ducklings....Nothin'....from their first 7" from 1966. This is the beginning of our Ugly Ducklings special, as Dave Bingham (lead singer/harp for the entire run of the band) has written and just released a book, Noise From The North End, The Amazing Story of The Ugly Ducklings. It's well over 500 pages and packs in tons of stories about the band, the times, recording, playing live and living the life of an Ugly Duckling. A Great read for fans of the band or just if you're into the music of that era!

      18. The Ugly Ducklings...She Ain't No Use To Me....from their second 7" 1966.

      19. The Ugly Ducklings...Just In Case You Wonder...from their third 7" 1967. This was one of the first records I ever bought and it still gives me the same kick listening to it as 49 years ago!!! You probably could say this one has influenced my musical tastes over the years!

      20. The Ugly Ducklings....Gaslight....their fourth 7" from 1977 and this made #1 on CHUM AM, the Toronto radio station!!!

      21. The Ugly Ducklings....10:30 Train....the B side of their second single.

      22. The Ugly Ducklings...Rimb Nugget....the B side of their fourth single.

      23. The Ugly Ducklings....Hey Mama Keep Your Big Mouth Shut...from Somewhere Outside, the only LP the band released in its lifetime.

      24. The Ugly Ducklings....Just Another Rock'n'Roll Band...from their 1979 7" on Razor Records when the band reformed. There is also an LP from this time called Off The Wall, also on Razor Records.

      25. The Ugly Ducklings....Don't Bug Me....from the Inducktion recordings done in the 80's.

Out of time, but certainly not out of tunes. We'll continue with some more Ugly Ducklings on next week's show!  Big thanx for the phone calls, emails, facebook messages and Heys!!!

Radio What Wave Playlist  February 11/2016  Fund Raising Show

This is an all local show, featuring recordings from about 1978 to the present. It's a real mixture, mainly unreleased and live recordings, some of which have never been aired prior. And a HUGE thanx to all that took time to call in to pledge their support for CHRW....Dan, Kerry and Rena!!  Much appreciated!!

      1. The Demics....Factories....from the NYC CD on OPM Records and this is The Demics first time in the studio, Feb 78 Awes Studio in downtown London Ontario.

      2. The Demics...New Rose....live recording from 78/79 at The Cedar Lounge, London's first punk/new wave club.

      3. Uranus....Industrial Love....from a live to air on CHRW March 22/1982 from the Embassy Hotel. I remember recording this direct from the radio onto my Akai cassette deck back 34 years ago!!

      4. Orie Hitt Machine....Killer Inside Me....a 90's recording that might just have a member of Uranus on guitar.

      5. Frank Ridsdale....Little Red Riding Hood....recorded as part of a live to air on Radio What Wave 9/10/2010. Frank was in Uranus, The Sci-Phonics and many many other combos over the years. He has a weekly show at the Legion on Adelaide St every friday afternoon.

      6. Rockin' Bobby Harris....Honky Tonk Hardwood Floor...from a live CD called With Two Dollar Bill and His Bad Pennies. Local rockabilly legend who actually did some recording back in the days of real rockabilly (late 50's). Last time we saw Rockin' Bobby was at The Victoria, he had a walker to help him get to the 'stage'. Once he strapped on his guitar he was a Wildman!!! Singing and strumming and have a real cool time!!

      7. Black Holes....Miss Pearl...a recording from the Brunswick Hotel. Features local artist/guitar strangler Tom Hilborn ripping up the frets! These guys still get out and play every once in awhile and are a must see!

      8. The Dropouts....6 Feet Under...from the After School Sessions from 2005.  Sort of a cowpunk combo that moved to Vancouver and tried to make a go of it there. Some of them came back a coupla years later and are in a couple of bands, Gatgas and Excelsior here  in town.

      9. Duke Sedan and The Hi-Tones....Blue Jean Bop...from their only CD from 2008. Members have gone on to Twin Fin and The Thing From From Outer Space here in town.

      10. Dragsville....Royal Drag....killer instro from some songs they sent me a year or 2 ago. Only saw these guys twice and they've morphed into another combo who just played at the St Regis Hotel.

      11. Tuerto Loco....Nancy Sinatra....from a live to air on Radio What Wave 5/12/2011. Hank the Bookman and his combo come out of hiding now and again and play at the St Regis. This song originally appeared on a What Wave cassette back in the late 80's by Hank and Frank. One of my fave songs to come out of London Ontario!!!

      12. The Fine Print....Get You Alone...from a What Wave cassette from about 5 years ago. They did release one CD that is in this same vein of poppy 60's garage and is well worth searching if you dig that kinda sound like me! One of the few London Ontario bands to get a write up in The Knights Of Fuzz book (2014) by Timothy Gassen!

      13. The Standstills...Blues Radio...demo from 2008. The Standstills are a 2 piece combo who were living in London while they attended Fanshawe Music Industry Arts. Since then, they've moved back to Oshawa and now get regular airplay on the commercial stations across Canada and are doing quite well for themselves! Congrats!!

      14. Dave Campbell...The Time Is Now...from the CD Finding The Real from 2013. Picked this one up at local record store Grooves, as a giveaway at the front door. This song is an absolute masterpiece and reeks of the Faces mid 70's when they rocked like no one else!

      15. The Zellots...Lets Play House...from about 1979 when they briefly lived in Vancouver. This features Vancouver singer Heather Haley on lead vocals. Heather ended up singing in many Vancouver punk combos and is still active to this day.

      16. The Zellots...Do Me A Favour...from a live recording at Call The Office 10/27/2012 and was part of our Graphics Underground: London 1977-1990 opening party. This was the last time The Zellots played out and was supposed to be the first of a few live shows....we're still waiting. That's Kathy Destun on vocals, who sang with the band for their London years which is just about all of their lifespan. A band that coulda and shoulda.....

      17. The Stoves....Look Through Any Window....1979 live recording at the Cedar Lounge. This is The Hollies hit from the mid 60's done so sweetly with the harmony vocals!! Another band that coulda and shoulda...

      18. Radio 4...PTL....demos from the rehearsal room. This band morphed into Sheep Look Up, another band that coulda and shoulda....Both bands featured longtime bassist Mark Deroux  RIP!

      19. Flying Squad....Radiation Receiver.....from a 1988 demo. London's only biker rock combo and featured the over the top vocals (and facial antics) of Tim Murphy RIP!

      20. Boy From Nowhere...Borderline....90's live recording from Mortz's Place, also known as Leadbellys and now is a strip club! Long running combo who only did cover tunes and did them well!! They're back out playing and are as good, if not better than they were back in the mid 80's!! A personal fave local combo and not just because they played our wedding many moons ago!

      21. UIC....What I Want....live recording from Call The Office from 1985. There has been video of this show that's appeared on Youtube. and features a much younger version of me dancing like a fool up front of the band! These guys played our wedding too, but don't hold that against them!  Reunion show happening April 2nd in Oshawa as part of the Mike Star Tribute Show!

      22. NFG....Media Junkie....live recording possibly at the York Hotel in the late 70's. A fine power pop band that was ahead of its time and didn't know it. They've since morphed into 63 Monroe that still play out now and again.

      23. The Mogs....See The Mornin'....mid 90's recording from this Rob Munro (RIP) band. A couple years back, Rob reformed the band (with new members) in Hamilton and released a CD on What Wave Records.

      24. Hurricane and Able....Who's That Girl?....from a download called The Last Temptation from 2013.  Features local scenester and member of many bands, Shawn Larouge. We're still awaiting the London live debut of this combo!

      25. Marcellus Wallace....Brothers and Sisters....from their self titled debut CD. Soul fueled combo that put on absolute Killer live shows!!

Ran out of time, certainly not material! Hope you enjoyed this all local show as it was a blast to assemble and had to leave off so many essential London combos!!!

And a HUGE thanx for all the phone calls, emails, facebook messages and Heys!!! And thanx fo all that pledged their support to CHRW during the show....Dan, Kerry and Rena!!

Back again next week with an all black artist show as this is Black History Month and CHRW is doing an all black day on Feb 23rd.

Radio What Wave Playlist February 18/2016. All Black Show

Since it's Black History Month, it's time to do an all Black Show!!  First time we've done this and it wasn't easy getting the show down to 90m....SO many artists that should have been played!!

      1. Marcellus Wallace.....Dollar Bill....from their self titled debut CD. Local combo that put on killer live shows!! The picture above is singer Ajay in action at Call The Office opening up for Barrence Whitfield and the Savages.

      2. Jo Jo and The Fugitives....Chips Chicken Banana Split...from the CD Jamaica To Toronto Soul Funk and Reggae 1967-1974. Thanx to Alicks Gee for introducing me to this song back in 2006 as Alicks was our Music Director here at CHRW and used to play this one fairly often on her Magical Mystery Mondays show!

      3. Wayne McGhie....Fire...from his lone LP from 1970. Another  combo from Toronto and this LP is extremely rare as many copies were lost in a warehouse fire. Light In The Attic re-ished this one in 2004.

      4. Jackie Mitoo...Grand Funk...also from the CD Jamaica To Toronto. Toronto had lots of ex-Jamaica and Barbados who got together and formed combos back in that era (late 60's) producing some mighty fine tunes!

      5. Danko Jones...Who Got It?...from the Garage Rock! CD from 2014. Also from Toronto but now lives in Europe where he can make a living doing music. Danko and band were in town a week or 2 ago.

      6. The Dice....Typical Lies....from the 12" EP on Nardem Records. The Dice were from Toronto, late 70's/early 80's and would play places like The Cedar Lounge here in London. Not really punk, they sounded more like mid 70's Stones primed on 60's garage rock before moving in a more commercial direction. Singer Gary Lima was head of the MIA program at Fanshawe College here in London and drummer Hayden Vialva plays in several bands and is involved behind the scenes here in London. Hayden was a guest on Radio WW a couple of years back due to his involvement with The Kards.

      7. The Cult Heroes....Lexington....from the compilation LP Cruisin' Ann Arbor from 1982. Cult Heroes played here in London at least twice and put on memorable shows! Lead singer Hiawatha was a maniac on stage!!

      8. Death....Keep A Knockin'...from the For The Whole World To See Lp that came out in 2009. This was recorded back in the mid 70's and was never released at the time. The band consists of 3 brothers who have since put the band back together and play every once in awhile.

      9. Funkadelic....Super Stupid....from the 1971 Lp Maggot Brain. Big Chief released a version of this song on their first LP back in 1981.

      10. Curtis Mayfield.....Pusherman...from the Super Fly soundtrack CD on Rhino. The double Rhino CD has some unreleased and instros used in the movie.

      11. Last Poets...When The Revolution Comes....from their debut LP from 1970. The beginnings of Hip Hop!!

      12. Little Jackie Shane....Papa's Got A Brand New Bag...from the Jackie Shane LP from 1967. Toronto singer who dressed in drag and got away with it. Tough to do back in the 60's!! Jackie disappeared for many years, but was found alive a couple of years back living in the southern states. This LP has been re-released recently on the OPM label out of Toronto.

      13. James Brown....Night Train...from the Feels Good LP from 1966.

      14. The Isley Brothers....Twist And Shout...1962 recording from a greatest hits LP. This is the version The Beatles used for their hit record.

      15. Aretha Franklin....Think...from an LP called Star-Collection that has some of her 60's Atlantic sides on it.

      16. Gary US Bonds...Star...from the Rhino LP Certified Soul which collects some of Gary's late 60's singles onto one LP. This particular song should have been covered by The New York Dolls not only for it's lyrical content, but it's overall feel. Instead, The Dolls opted to cover 7 Day Weekend, another very cool Gary US Bonds tune!

      17. The Temptations....Cloud 9....from the double CD Psychedelic Soul. My fave Temptations release as this collects some phenomenal psych soul!!

      18. Sly and The Family Stone....Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again)...from a greatest hits CD. Magazine covered this back in about 1980.

      19. Shirley Matthews...Big Town Boy....7" on Tamarack Records from the mid 60's. Remember this one being a hit on CHUM AM back in the day!

      20. Mighty Popo....Turaje....from the 2003 CD Ngagara and some nice Afrobeat. Saw this guy at Sunfest many years ago.

      21. Fela Kuti....Zombie....from the 1977 Zombie LP.This song takes a whole side of the LP and we ran out of time before getting to the part where the vocals kick in.  This is the first LP of Fela's that i picked up and made me a fan for life!!

Thanx for all the phone calls, emails, facebook messages and Heys!!! All greatly appreciated and that's what makes it all worthwhile!!!

Next week, we're doing a special on former CHRW DJ Peter Moore (known onair as Simon Less) and Jan Haust. Both former Londoners and they shared a Grammy Award the other day for their work on Bob Dylan's The Bootleg Series Volume 11: The Basement Tapes Complete. Congrats to both!! Peter lived in London in the late 70's/early 80's and was often seen in the clubs recording bands with his white mannequin head with mics in the ears. He went on to fame recording the first Cowboy Junkies LP. Jan was involved in London record store, Records on Wheels, the first place you could get punk/new wave records here in London. I spent a lot of money and time at that store!!

Radio What Wave Playlist February 25/2016   Peter Moore/Jan Haust Special

In honour of former CHRW DJ Peter Moore (Simon Less was his onair name) and Jan Haust winning a Grammy for Best Historical Album, we decided to play some of the bands that Peter has recorded and/or mastered and Jan has released on his label OPM. Both played major roles in the early punk/new wave scene here in London Ontario. Jan worked at Records On Wheels, a downtown record store that was the very first in the are to stock and sell punk/new wave records. Peter helped get CHRW off the ground, recorded many, many bands and also released the first local cassette compilation, Domestic Animals. Major CONGATS to both on their Grammy win!!!!

      1. The Demics....Talk's Cheap....from the New York City CD on OPM Records and this was from the very first Demics recording session from Feb 1978 at Awes Studio in downtown London. Peter mastered this release.

      2. Presence....Concrete....recorded live at the Embassy Hotel by Peter Moore and was aired on CHRW in the very early 80's. This is one of many binaurual recordings that Peter did at the clubs around town. If you saw a white styrofoam head sitting on a table at an event, Peter was recording. There were mics in the ears of the head to give the recording a stereo effect as if you were there. Presence were from Calgary Alberta and that sounds like Brian Lambert introducing the band.

      3. NFG...Cyanide....from the Domestic Animals cassette release by Peter Moore and Gerry Collins. According to the notes, it was recorded 10/22/1981, but that can't be correct as NFG were named First Date at this time and just a bit later, went back to be called 63 Monroe.  Judging by the sound, it's probably 63 Monroe but earlier than fall of 1981. Ya, i'm anal about these things. Peter and Gerry didn't tell the bands that this cassette was being released and many heard themselves for the first time, right here on CHRW!! As a rebuttal, another cassette was released called Animals Fight Back in which the bands were asked what they would like on the tape. Chris Richards of Generics and Mike Niederman were involved in this release.

      4. 63 Monroe....Hyjack Victim....recorded live at The Cedar Lounge Easter 1981 and aired on Peters radio show on CHRW.

      5. Shakin' Jack and the Rattlesnake Jakes....Ice Cream Man....also from the Domestic Animals cassette and recorded at Fryfogles Tavern August 1982. Fryfogles was located right around what is now the entrance to the downtown public library. Perry Puckett was heavily involved in this band and he's about to revive Giggleswitch, a band from a few years back.

      6. Crash 80's....Nowhere To Hide...also from Domestic Animals. Recorded at Larry's Hideaway in Toronto April 1980. Crash 80's released one excellent 7" that is fairly difficult to find these days. If anyone has the recording of the full set by Crash 80's I'd love a copy!

      7. The Zellots...On The Dole....recorded live at the Kent Hotel early 80's and aired on Peters radio show. The Zellots were probably my fave band from this era and were one of those bands that coulda and shoulda but shit happened.

      8. The Zellots....Shiek....1981 recording from EMAC Studios that Peter mastered.

      9. Blue Peter...Neon Girls...live recording from Fryfogles Tavern 5/16/1981 that Peter aired on his radio show.  I still vividly remember the first time we ever saw Blue Peter at The Cedar Lounge. Didn't have a clue who they were, but was told they were from Toronto and this would have been about 1979. For some reason we got to the club early, or sound check was running really late and we sat at a table near the entrance to the men's can. That was to the right of the stage, by the pinball machine. and usually we sat at the other side of the bar. Well the band was sound checking and sounding really good from where we were and suddenly the singer jumped from the stage, mic in hand and landed on the dance floor dancing up a storm all the while singing! It was one of the wildest dances we'd seen as he had the whole dance floor (it wasn't a big dance floor and was usually packed once the bands started) to jump around on! It was just so cool the way he got into it and really primed us up for when they actually started the set! Wish I had pictures from that night!!

      10. Rough Trade....Revenge Of The Killer Hairdressers....recorded live at The Spoke at Western University early 80's. Think I taped this from Peter's radio show and he was involved in some of the live to airs here at CHRW.

      11. Teenage Head...Picture My Face....recorded live at The Spoke at Western University 2/18/1981.  This aired live to air and I recorded it off the radio on my cassette deck. Back then, you had to be a student or a guest of a student to get into The Spoke and I was neither at the time. This went live to air with all profanities intact! And that's not Gordie Lewis on guitar, that's fillin David Bendeth as Gordie was injured from the car accident prior to this show. There's some nice comments from Frankie Venom in regards to The Cedar Lounge at the beginning of this one!

      12. Steve Blimkie....Now That You Say You Love Me....from his first LP on Ready Records. Peter mastered this one as well as many others on Ready Records. Steve was a Fanshawe MIA program student and did several shows at the Cedar Lounge. He was NOT liked by the Cedar regulars due to his stuck up attitude. Regular listener Kerry P called in to reitarate this!! Personally, I had nothing against the guy and thought he always put on a pretty good show!

      13. Sheep Look Up....Civil Disobedience....from their cassette recorded and mastered by Peter Moore, who did a lot of well praised work for Sheep Look Up. And as an odd coincidence, Sheep Look Up were inducted into the Jack Richardson London Music Awards Hall Of Fame right around the time this song aired!!

      14. The Secrets....I'll Cry Tomorrow...from the Teenage Rampage CD on OPM Records and mastered by Peter Moore. Toronto combo that were either ahead or behind the times as they were way out of step with the punk sounds of the day. But listening now, it sounds so timeless and sooooo good!!! Never got to see these guys back in the day and they did a very short re-union a few months back.

Out of time, but never out of tunes as Mustang Playoffs had to start. Thanx for all the phone calls, emails, facebook messages and Heys!! And Huge Thanx to the appreciative crowd at the Kangaroo Variety Magazine for listening to me babble about the above days and What Wave zine at your show!! It was a Blast!!!

Back again next week with a short special on Vi Subversa (Poison Girls) and we'll play some more music that Peter and Jan were involved with as well as some new releases!

Radio What Wave Playlist March 3/2016  Part 2 of Peter Moore/Jan Haust Special

This is part 2 of our special on Peter Moore and Jan Haust...here's what was posted on the last blog to give you an idea of how important these 2 figured in the early London punk rock era:  In honour of former CHRW DJ Peter Moore (Simon Less was his onair name) and Jan Haust winning a Grammy for Best Historical Album, we decided to play some of the bands that Peter has recorded and/or mastered and Jan has released on his label OPM.

And we've gotta congratulate Sheep Look Up as they were inducted into the Jack Richardson Music Hall Of Fame!  Sheep Look Up forged out of Radio 4 into Sheep Look Up around 1982 and continued for several years, releasing a cassette and 12" EP before crashing and burning. We'll do a proper bio/history prior to their induction next month.

      1.  Sheep Look Up....Jumper....from their cassette produced by Peter Moore. Peter did a lot of work with Sheep Look Up and helped transform them into a contender.

      2. B Girls....Jealousy....from the Who Says Girls Can't Rock CD on OPM Records and mastered by Peter Moore. B Girls were one of the first all girl punk/new wave combos and released a 7" on Greg Shaw's Bomp Records. There was supposed to be an LP, but it never happened, so all we've got is this CD. London connection for this band is Marcy Saddy, who played drums.

      3. The Curse...He's My Boy....from the Teenage Meat CD on OPM and mastered by Peter Moore. This particular track was recorded live here in London at the Forest City Gallery 11/25/1977 by Mike Niederman on cassette. Only the third ever punk rock show here in London, with The Diodes and Eddie and the Hot Rods pre-dating this one. Within a month, that would all change as The Demics would finally emerge from Niederman's loft to create a new voice for the insurance capitol of North America!

      4. The Mods....Reaction....from the Twenty 2 Months CD on OPM and mastered by Peter Moore. Toronto's first mod combo with some powerpop overtones. They played here at The Cedar Lounge under this name, and later with the shortlived name The News. Drummer David Quinton Steinberg would go on to The Dead Boys, Stiv Bators Band, solo before settling on a career in entertainment law. He presently drums in the reformed Arson in Toronto.

      5. The Forgotten Rebels....I Think Of Her...from the Tomorrow Belongs To Us CD on OPM and mastered by Peter Moore. This particular tracks was recorded December 1980 at The Cedar Lounge here in London.

      6. The Viletones....Rather Be With Me...from the Taste Of Honey CD on OPM Records and mastered by Peter Moore.

      7. The Ugly....One Foot In The Gutter...from the Disorder CD on OPM records and produced by Peter Moore.  These guys were supposed to open for The Curse (see entry above) at the Forest City Gallery show and didn't show up. They did release one 7" record that is much more poppy than what this CD would lead you to believe.

      8. Ugly Ducklings....Don't Bug Me....from the Reduction recordings. Ugly Ducklings were a Toronto based 60's garage combo of extremely high calibre! Easily the best in Canada! This particular recording was done in the 90's and produced by Peter Moore.

      9. The Razorbacks....It's Saturday Night....from the Go To Town LP released on OPM records and produced by Peter Moore. Late 80's/early 90's rockabilly combo noted for their wild live shows! Released at least 2 LP's and a couple of 7" records.

      10. Jr Gone Wild....God Is Not My Father....from the Pull The Goalie CD on Stony Plains Records and produced by Peter Moore. Edmonton combo from the mid 80's to mid 90's that played several times here in London. There's also a movie coming out soon about the band that might feature a couple of pics taken here in London.

      11. UIC....Pushed Into The Hole....from the Wiseman Sessions 1989 and mastered by Peter Moore. From Exeter Ontario and these guys have a reunion show scheduled for April 2nd in Oshawa for the Mike Star Benefit Show. See you all there!!

      12. The Chickens....25 Years....from the Prepare to Plug in CD from 2000 and mastered by Peter Moore.  4 out of 5 Chickens came from UIC and the band moved in a decidedly more pop direction. Power pop at its finest!! A band that when they played live, could get this old fart up and dancing for the whole show!!

      13. Art Bergmann....Our Little Secret....from the Design Flaw CD on OPM records and produced by Peter Moore. Art's been around since the mid 70's and this particular release is from 1998 and also features UK guitar whiz Chris Spedding. Warts and all, this is Art as loose, raw and honest as it gets! There's a new Art Bergmann project about to be released.

      14. The Sadies....Another Year....from the Darker Circles LP from 2010 and mastered by Peter Moore. One of my fave Sadies tracks and they could have written this one about me. Liner notes by the proprieter of Ugly Things magazine, Mike Stax which gives the band a whole nother level of street cred!

      15. The Screwed....Another Girl, Another Planet....from the 1977 CD and produced by Peter Moore. A bunch of the veterans of the original 1977 Toronto era got together and recorded a bunch of their fave songs from 1977. A fun ride with some of my fave tunes!

Big thanx for all the call ins (especially that long distance truck driver on the 401 who was heading east and digging the sounds!), emails, facebook messages and Heys!!!  Back again next week, hopefully with a full 90m of rock action.  Definitely going to do a trib to Vi Subversa (Poison Girls) which is long overdue.

Radio What Wave Playlist March 10 2016

      1. Dave Rave....Just LIke Honey....froma 1990 7" on Mole Records out of Hamilton. Dave and Hailee Rose are playing saturday night in Brantford Ontario at a small pub.

      2. The Hypnotics....Inside Pop Revolution....from the Modern Art Entertainment CD and from Windsor Ontario as this is the start of a short Windsor set. This will be issued on vinyl in the next month or so.

      3. Lost Patrol....Second Time Around...from a 1988 7". Lost Patrol appeared on many What Wave cassettes and Mr Garager's Neighbourhood (LP we co-released with OG Records back in 1989). They played here in London many many times, at long gone venues like Key West, Brunswick Hotel and Electric Banana.

      4. Jack Scott....The Way I Walk...from the Rocks LP and originally released back in the late 50's and much later covered by The Cramps. We attempted to play Good Times in this set as well, but the cassette machine wouldn't co-operate.

      5. Poison Girls...Persons Unknown...split 7" with Crass.  Lead vocalist/guitarist Vi Subversa passed a couple weeks back and this is our tribute to her. She started the band in 1976 when she was in her early 40's and was probably the oldest punk rocker at that time. Intense intelligent lyrics bemoaning the state of society and how women were treated were often topics for Poison Girls songs. They played many many shows with Crass, yet their music was way beyond punk in it's many textures and sounds, yet was accepted and cheered on by the difficult to please UK punk scene. Vi was 80 years old when she passed and probably the oldest punk in the books.

      6. Poison Girls...Political Love....from the Hex 12" from 1979.  Listening to Poison Girls records now, they don't sound dated and still give me the same thrill as when i bought them as soon as they came across the pond to North America. Never got a chance to see this band and there are few live clips on youtube. But their one live album sounds as good as anything they did in the studio.

      7. Poison Girls....State Control....from the Chappaquiddick Bridge LP from 1980.  The lyrics still ring true today.

      8. Poison Girls....Another Hero Bites The Dust...as above. Fitting song to end the trib to Vi Subversa!

      9. Coaching For Sara.....Tonight's The Night....brand new and from London Ontario!! Some mighty fine powerpop and they have a CD coming out in the next week or so. You'll be hearing it on Radio WW for sure!

      10. Grievances....Cool To You For Awhile....from a bandcamp download and also from London Ontario! These guys are opening for Red Arms at Call The Office on March 24th.

      11. Don't Touch The Dancers....Only Rock'n'Roll....from the Laundramats Make Me Nervous download and also from London Ontario. Recorded awhile back, this was just released, but the band has broken up. Saw them a couple of times and they put on a good show!

      12. Stone Soul....Fire In My Veins...demo and also from London area. This is Ryan from In The Red's combo, who used to go under the name Vintage Experience.

      13. Combatix....I Got Pills....from the Chinese Songs For Bad Boys CD. From France where they are known as one of the top garage bands in the country!

      14. Said The Ripper....Flight Of The Vickers...brand new download and they are from California. Guitarist Jordan Tarlow may be familiar to some for his work with Outta Place and The Fuzztones among others.

      15. Excelsior....Undead Fourth Reich...from their 7" EP, Punk Floyd.  From London Ontario and they have a show at the Richmond on saturday night.

      16. The Beatles...A Hard Day's Night...taken from the soundtrack LP and goes out to producer/fifth Beatle George Martin who passed away this week. George took these greasy leather clad lads fresh from the concrete jungles of Germany, and turned them into the world's biggest band due to his ear for recording. Might have had some help in the fashion end from Brian Eppstein! But George helped create the sound from 1962 and helped change the musical world for the better! A genius that could do more with just 4 tracks then most can imagine! Rip George Martin.

      17. The Beatles...I Wanna Be Your Man...from the With The Beatles LP. This is a song they gave to The Rolling Stones who recorded it, but also did their own version of it.

      18. The Beatles...And Your Bird Can Sing....from Yesterday and Today, the first Beatles LP i ever purchased back in 1968. This is my original copy from back then that i played, and you can hear a bit of noise, but vinyl was built to last back then! I played this one as The Flamin' Groovies covered this at one time.

      19. The Beatles....I Am The Walrus...from Magical Mystery Tour, the second LP i ever bought by The Beatles and this is my original being played. A little rougher than above, but this is the mono North American version of this song and my fave version.  George did such an amazing job on the production of this song and the whole LP!

      20. Touch and Gos....I Like My Car....from a self titled cassette from 1990. Vancouver based and the beginning of our Vancouver set. Brian from Drums Along The Gardiner drums on this one right after he moved to Vancouver.

      21. Pointed Sticks....American Song....from the Perfect Youth LP from 1981. Saw these guys at least once at The Cedar Lounge here in London back in the day. First band i can remember seeing that played a Sonics cover!!

      22. Modernettes...Barbra....from the Get It Straight CD that collects most of their recordings. From 1980 and this song should have been a major hit!

      23. New Town Animals....Rock'n'Roll Scene....from the Is Your Radio Active CD on Mint Records and from 2001.

Thanks for the phone calls, emails, facebook messages and Heys!!! Don't forget to check out this and other archived shows at the CHRW website!

Back again next week. We'll be doing a trib to Andrew Loomis of Dead Moon who  passed away this week. And maybe something on Keith Emerson of The Nice, Gary Farr and The T Bones, PP Arnold and ELP as he passed today.

Radio What Wave Playlist March 17 2016

      1. M&M Meats....Runners Love....from the Transistor 66 100th release download.

      2. Surprise Party.....Comedown.... as above.

      3. Captain Scarlet and The Mysterons....Are You Really Gone...from Four Whom The Bell Tolls 7" on What Wave Records 1988 and came free witn an issue of What Wave zine. Features world reknowned graphic designer Andrew Lewis on the drums, who just happened to design CHRW's latest shirt. And we're going to be playing a lot of record on this show, as Sunday March 20th is the London Record Show at Centennial Hall. I've got a table and will have copies of this record for sale.

      4. The Minstrels...Rock'n'Roll Soldier...from the Come Out To Play EP on What Wave Records from 1989. Quebec based power pop/beat combo who also appeared on a couple of WW cassettes.

      5. Coaching For Sara..... Stick With You...pre-release of a CD that's due any day. Local power poppers who you can catch at an acoustic show April 2nd at Grinning Gator.

      6. Rory Gallagher....Secret Agent....from the Calling Card LP 1976 and the start of our Irish set. Lou Martin on keys really shines on this one and those little screams Rory lets go make the hairs on the back of my neck stick up! Easily my fave Rory Gallagher LP from my collection (only have about 10 of his LP's) and one that i constanly go back to!

      7. The Wheels....Road Block....from Pebbles Volume 6. These guys were pals with Them and even shared a couple of tunes: Gloria and Bad Little Woman which oddly, were both covered in the US by The Shadows Of Knight. This particular track is a ferocious 2 chord stomper and was oft covered by The Cynics live in their early days.

      8. Them....Mystic Eyes.... from a Them compilation LP. Features Van Morrison on vocals and similar in structure to the above Road Block but toned down a bit for the masses. Still a killer track to these ears!

      9. The Undertones....Teenage Kicks...from a Canadian Sire 7" from 1979.  Oft billed as legendary UK DJ John Peel's fave single this one has appeared in many different incarnations. Thought i'd play the Canuck 7" as the Record Show is sunday and you might find a copy of this record at the show.

      10. Dany Laj and the Looks....Queen St West....from the Word On The Street CD. Finally found a copy of this on vinyl at Grooves here in town. Dany and company will be in London on Friday April 1st at Call The Office, opening for Paul Collins Beat!! Possible show of the year contender!!

      11. The Nerves....Hanging On The Telephone....from the One Way Ticket LP and this is the original 1976 demo of the song. Later a hit by Blondie. This features Paul Collins on drums as part of the first power pop trio; Peter Case, Jack Lee and Paul Collins.

      12. 10 Heads....You Clean Me Up...from the Swimming and Singing CD from 2001. These guys are at the St Regis on saturday night for an early show.

      13. 10 Heads....Solid On The Funky Bass.....a demo for Mark Deroux, legendary local bass player who passed several years back. Sheep Look Up, which Mark was an integral part of, are up for an award at the Jack Richardson Awards next month.

      14. Dead Moon.... Don't Burn The Fires....Tombstone 7" from 1988 and goes out to drummer Andrew Loomis who passed last week.  Guitarist/vocalist Fred Cole has now retired from rock'n'roll and wil only be doing acoustic shows with his wife Toody.

      15. Dead Moon....Black September....Tombstone 7" from 1989 and this song also appeared on a What Wave cassette compilation.

      16. Dead Moon...Dagger Moon....Tombstone 7" from 1990.

      17. Noble Savages....I Don't Wanna Be A Boy No More....from a new Transistor 66 Records 7" called Four Off The Floor.

      18. US Depressed....Motorized....demo from this Arizona combo that features Orin Portnoy, former Optic Nerve and many other bands member.

      19. Jehosaphat Blow...Real Cool Party....from the recent Z Grade Rock'n'Roll download. From China and bedroom based combo.

      20. The Finks...Can't Say No....local 7" from 1987 that features Pete Fink on bass and vocals.

      21. The New Grand....Ready Steady Go.....local 7" from 1995.

      22. Legend Killers...You'll Get Yours....from the Better Than Hammerin' 7" from 1989 on What Wave Records.

      23. Strait Jacket....De Briefing.....7" from Stratford Ontario, probably early 80's.

Big Thanx for all the phone calls, emails, facebook messages and Hey's on the street!!!

I'll be at the London Record Show on sunday with a table of records, CD's, cassettes, zines etc. Come say Hey!! The show opens at 11AM and is at Centennial Hall in downtown London Ontario.

Back again next week and had a request for some Forgotten Rebels live here in London....and who knows what else we'll be spinning!!

      7. UIC...No Fun....recorded live at Call The Office 3/16/1985 and went out to Mike Burton, who had this song dedicated to him by UIC at the big Mike Star Tribute Show in Oshawa on saturday. UIC sounded and looked almost identical to their heyday in the late 80's!! Only difference was Dave Dysart filling in for Ted Triebner, who actually showed up to play about 3 or 4 songs at the very end of the night!!

      8. The Hypnotics...Where The Action Is...from the recent Modern Art Entertainment CD.

      9. Fireball Grant...Family Tree....from a demo. One man band Fireball is scheduled to play saturday night at the 765, formerly the Town and Country, formerly the Queens Hotel...

      1. Calrizians....Wasabi Blast....from a demo they sent us recently. The Calrizians will be playing at The Dawghouse on Saturday April 23rd as part of the surf fest happening. And next week, we'll have some of the members of local surf combo The Thing From Outer Space as guests as we do an all surf show!

      2. Coaching For Sara....Look Around...from their about to be released CD. CFS are playing this wednesday at Fitzrays as part of their indy showcase.

      3. The Gizmos....21st Century Gizmo Fans...from their just released EP, the first new recordings in decades! The Gizmos pre-date the punk rock movement and released records back in the mid 70's.

      4. 63 Monroe...Weekend Punx....from the Hijack Victim LP on Rave Up Records, which is some of their 80's recordings....local combo who play Call The Office on Saturday night.

      5. The Britemores....Words In The Air....from their recent self titled CD. Detroit vets in a relatively new combo.

      6. Daddy Long Legs.... Candy Sue...from the Evil Eye On You LP from 2012 on Norton Records. They come to town next friday, April 22nd at Call The Office, hope to see lots of you out at this show!

      7. Daddy Long Legs...30 Days...as above.

      8. catl....Save Myself....from their This Shakin' House LP. They will be playing with Daddy Long Legs on April 22nd!

      9. Hiroshima Hearts...Ache..from their recent self titled debut CD. Local combo you've heard countless times here on Radio WW and now you gotta go see them open for catl and Daddy Long Legs on friday April 22nd at Call The Office!!

      10. Sheep Look Up....Rapture...from their 1985 debut 12" EP. Sheep Look Up are a local band set to re-form for sunday's Jack Richardson Music Awards show here in London Ontario. They are being inducted into the London Music Hall Of Fame and deservedly so. They started as the Raw Dogs, then to Radio 4 and finally Sheep Look Up and evolved into an original powerhouse of a band that shoulda broken out big time.  Rumour has it, they wil be doing 6 songs on sunday, so this is your chance.

      11. Spiral Scratch...No Familiar Faces...from their 1983 Zulu Syndrome LP and again from London Ontario.  Singer/guitarist Paul Wooten is organizing a walk of downtown London in which he will point out some of our old hangouts (or at least where they were), details on facebook.

      12. Hot House....Burn It Down....from the 1978 Lp of the same name and another local combo. Hot House and the above 2 bands all played at my fave watering hole, The Cedar Lounge, many years ago.

      13. The Zorgs...Black Molasses....from their recent Chew On It CD on Transistor 66 Records and out of Winnipeg.

      14. Dynamite Pussy Club...Midnight Hour...from their about to be released Shakedown LP/cassette and from Bath UK.

      15. Light Bulb Alley...Mary....brand new demo from this Montreal combo who have release one CD on Ricochet Sound.

      16. Hip Bone Slim and The KneeTremblers....Hieroglyphic....from their brand new Ugly Mobile CD on Dirty Water Records out of the UK. Features veteran stick handler Bruce Brand of The Milkshakes infamy!

      17. 3 O'Clock Train.... Train Of Dreams....from the Wig Wam Beach Ep from about 1985. 3OT has gotten back together and re-recorded this song along with others and just released them. Watch out for a cross Canada tour sometime in the not too distant.... They are from Montreal and played London a couple of times back in the mid 80's. The first time we saw them, they were double booked with Blood On The Saddle at Key West, and after a long discussion, they decided amongst themselves who would headline for the dozen or so people there.

      18. Mars Bonfire....Born To Be Wild...from his self titled LP from 1968. Mars wrote this tune that became a HUGE hit for Steppenwolf. This is not the original version, Steppenwolf's is, this is a later recording by Mars and band and gives the song a southern swampy soul feel it.

      19. Small Faces....Talk To You...from an Immediate Records Greatest Hits and from 1967. I'm really getting off on Small Faces lately and you'll probably be hearing lots more from them in future Radio WW's.

      20. The Insomniacs...Today's The Way...from a recent single on Hidden Volume Records, Baltimore's coolest record label as so many great records have come out of this label recently.

      21. Steve Miller Band....Living In The USA...from the Anthology LP and from 1968. After Steve's amazing post show interview at his induction into the Rock Hall Of Fame, we shoulda done an entire show on his early career! Finally someone with the gonads to tell it like it is! And can you imagine how much Steve Miller Band product has been sold in the last few days!! The man's a fucking genius!!

      22. The Improbables.... Gotta Calm Down...recent single on Hidden Volume Records.

      23. The Who....Out In The Steet...from the My Generation Lp from 1965.

      24. Tom Jones...Evil....from a 7" on Third Man Records. This goes out to Tom's wife who passed away earlier this week.

Huge Thanx for all the phone calls this week! Lots and lots of encouraging words from all you crazies that listen each and every week!! And thanx for all the emails, facebook messages and Heys!!  You might see Rena and I at the Jacks on sunday as we've been nominated for an award in the Scenebuilding category, no idea how the winner is chosen, but hopefully the late John Bellone wins the award.

Next week, it's an all surf special as we bring in some of the members of The Thing From Outer Space into the studio to yammer and do who knows what! It's all in preparation for the big surf show happening saturday April 23rd at The Dawghouse here in London. Also on the bill are Toronto surf vets The Calrizians (they played here once before several years back) and the all female surf combo, The Surfrajettes! It's a free show, so come on out and have some fun!

      14. The Ventures.... Out Of Limits....from their Greatest Hits LP on Liberty Records.

      15. The Ventures...High And Dry....from the Guitar Freakout LP on Dolton Records. Probably the first LP I ever bought.....K-Mart, 99 cents in the cut out records, probably 1967/68. And this went out to Richard, host of Beyond The Beyond which follows Radio WW every week.

      16. Urban Surf Kings... Twister...from the Live In Hell CD and recorded live in Halifax in 2006.

      17. Said The Ripper....Flight Of The Vickers....demo from a band that features a former Fuzztone on lead fuzz!

      18. The Thing From Outer Space....Walk Don't Run....from a live or rehearsal recording.

      19. The Thing From Outer Space....FBI.... as above.

      3. The Alfas....Slide Machine....from their soon to be released 7" on Beluga Records and these guys are from Sweden.

      8. Daddy Long Legs....The Stranger Rides Tonight....brand new 7" on Folc Records out of Spain. Daddy Long Legs are from NYC, and have several LP's out on the Norton label. 13. The Thing From Outer Space...Ghost Hop....from their demo recordings and we had these guys in the studio for last week's show! They put on a great set at the Dawghouse here on Saturday night, along with The Surfragettes and The Calrizians. All surf and instro all night!

      14. Wiggy Dunit...Wasaga Beach....from the 1991 compilation CD Boppin' In Canada on Nervous Records out of the UK. This is an all Canadian comp of mainly rockabilly, and this particular track is Frank Ridsdale playing everything but the drums, which are ably handled by Dexter Beauregard, both of whom were in Uranus from right here in London Ontario. Both still play regularly as Frank has his Stetson Brothers and Dexter plays in blues combos.

      15. Coaching For Sara....These People....from their brand new self titled CD and from London Ontario! Thanx to vocalist Shane for delivering this to the station prior to this show!

      16. Coaching For Sara....Little Lady... as above.

      19. Graham Parker... Saturday Night Is Dead...from the Squeezing Out Sparks LP from 1979. Been on a Graham Parker fix lately as he's such a great songwriter and many of his songs have an angry tone that's mixed with soul and pop sounds. Check out his early work, it's a great place to start investigating this long time artist.

      20. Pretty Things.... Cold Stone....from the Singles A's and B's on Harvest Records and this track is from 1970. This goes out to lead guitarist Pete Tolson who just recently passed away. Pete was in the band from the early to mid 70's and was featured on many of their Swan Song Records LP's.

      21. Lonnie Mack....Wham....from his 1963 LP The Wham Of That Memphis Man. RIP to Lonnie Mack who passed away the same day as Prince. Highly influential guitarist who worked with Stevie Ray Vaughan for at least one album.

      22. Cordcalling...One Road Only...from their brand new LP We Are Still and are a duo from London Ontario whom we've had on a live to air a few years back.

      23. Zoom....Subway Surfin'....from the brand new LP Sweet Desperation on Ugly Pop Records. This is recordings done in the late 70's/early 80's that are now just being released. Zoom did release on 7" back in the day, but that's fairly difficult to find these days. The 2 main members of the band, John Hamilton, drums (went on to The Diodes and The Secrets and plays in the current version of The Diodes) and Chris Haight, guitars (Viletone and The Secrets) were both heavily involved in the late 70's/early 80's Toronto punk/new wave scene.

      24. Tony Joe White... Elements...from his 1969 LP Continued on the Monument label. This is the guy who hit the big time in the late 60's with Polk Salad Annie and is still playing to this day.

25 catl....Hold My Body....from the 2014 Lp This Shakin' House and had to fade this out as we ran out of time.

Big thanx for all the phone calls, emails, facebook messages and Heys!!!  And kudos to all that attended the Daddy Long Legs/catl/Hiroshima Hearts and  The Thing From Outer Space/Surfragettes/The Calrizians live shows last weekend!!! Get out there and support your local bands and the touring bands that come through your town. If you don't,  no one else will!!

Next week we've got a 2.5 hour show of all Canadian Garage Punk music from the 80's and 90's with short specials on The Gruesomes, The Dundrells and Drums Along The Gardiner as all 3 bands are getting back together in May!!!

Radio What Wave Playlist May 5/2016   All Canadian 80's/90's Garage Special

      1. The Gruesomes....What Wave....from Mr Garager's Neighbourhood LP, OG Records 1989. We're starting the show with a spotlight on The Gruesomes as they are playing this friday in Montreal and Saturday in Montreal. The Gruesomes started in the mid 80's, based in Montreal and are the band that the world associates the Canadian garage music scene with. Hugely popular in their lifespan, they managed to cross Canada many times, topped the college radio charts from shore to shore and release many records that are still in demand to this day. This particular track was a surprise to us, as we were compiling this LP and had no idea The Gruesomes were submitting it! It was their way of paying tribute to What Wave for all the times they stayed over at our place, eating our food, playing our records, watching our video tapes and just hanging out having fun! They were real easy house guests!

      2. The Gruesome.....Medication....recorded live at Station 10, Montreal 5/9/1986. Very early live recording to give you an idea of their early live sound....although it really didn't change a lot over the year, just got tighter with the addition of drummer John 'Jed' Knoll and lots of live shows.

      3. The Gruesomes.... Jack The Ripper 1....from their 7" on Primitive Records. It's been re-ished in Greece in the last couple of years.

      4. The Gruesomes....Jack The Ripper 2... as above.

      5. The Gruesomes....Get Outta My Hair....from their first LP, The Tyrants Of Teen Trash on OG Records from 1986.  Their debut longplayer and has since been released on CD on Ricochet Sound and is still in print.

      6. The Gruesomes...Way Down Below....from their second LP Gruesomania on OG Records from 1987. This was the first LP to feature long time drummer John 'Jed' Knoll who replaced original drummer Eric Davis. Eric is the brother of bass player John Davis.

      7. The Gruesomes....Unchain My Heart....from the Primitive 12" EP.

      8. The Gruesomes.... Hey....from the Gruesomes third and final LP, Hey. This one had a corny video that got lots of play on Much Music (Canada's version of MTV) and lots of radio airplay and was a constant request at live shows. A fun and catchy tune that was perfect for the band!

      9. The Gruesomes....3 Men 1 Coffin....from the A-Billy 7" EP that came with What Wave zine 18 and was also featured on the cassette Live In Hell that you could get at live shows. The live recording was done in Halifax, Nova Scotia on Canada's east coast and many many people claim to have been at this particular show!. This song was also featured on the Sundazed compilation CD Gruesomology 1985-1989 which came out in 2003. The Gruesomes were one of the very few 80's garage combos to have a release on Sundazed, one of the best labels for 60's re-issues.

      10. The Gruesomes....Cry In The Night....recorded live at Key West, London Ontario 1/11/1987. This was the very first Gruesomes show here in London Ontario and was on a sunday night in the dead of winter. We were really concerned that few would come out, as The Gruesomes were fairly new and pretty much unknown around here except at WW HQ's. But those concerns were tossed aside when we showed up and the place was packed with people eager to see what all the hype was about! And The Gruesomes proceeded to tear the house down and played well over 2 hours that night! The first of many visits to London Ontario! They placed Key West once about a year later, and after that it was Call The Office with kids packed in like sardines for the dozen or more shows they played here.

      11. The Gruesomes....I Try....from Thee Cave Comes Alive, Action Records, 2004 from Greece. This is a vinyl LP of tracks that were on the cassettes that came with What Wave zine. The tracks were picked out by George Rigas, who arranged to have the record released. This was per-facebook and in the early days of internet communication so it took a couple of years to find the bands and put this thing together! Well worth it, as the final product featured some of the finest garage combos of the mid 80's/early 90's.

      12. The Gruesomes....Cave In....from the CD of the same name released 2000 on Tyrant Records.

      13. The Gruesomes....You Gotta Believe.... as above. All The Gruesomes material is available on CD from Ricochet Sound in Montreal. There's lots of bonus tracks and liner notes with all the gory details.

      14. Drums Along The Gardiner...Nuclear Plant....from Disgraceland, the cassette that came with What Wave zine #15. Drums Along The Gardiner were a late 80's garagepunk combo from Toronto that mixed a lot of late 70's punk into their sound, something that few were doing back in this time.  They are re-uniting next thursday, May 12th at The Garrison in Toronto for one night only.

      15. Drums Along The Gardiner....Fish....from their one and only 7" record.

      16. Drums Along The Gardiner....Speedin' In The USA.....from Baloney Sandwich, the cassette that came with What Wave zine #19. Drums Along The Gardiner played London a number of times, at the Key West a couple of times, the Brunswick and finally at Call The Office and had a bit of a following here.

      17. Drums Along The Gardiner....75...the other side of their only 7".

      18. Drums Along The Gardiner...Cincinnatti Blues....from a demo cassette they sent us back in the late 80's.

      19. Drums Along The Gardiner,,,,Vagabonds....from Mr Garager's Neighbourhood on OG Records from 1989 as mentioned at the very beginning of this track list.

      20. The Dundrells....Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White....recorded live at the El Mocambo in Toronto 5/2/1986 when they were opening for The Fleshtones.  This was the first time we saw The Dundrells and they put on a great show that night! The Dundrells will be re-uniting on Sunday May 15th at the Horseshoe in Toronto for Derek Von Essen's book release party for No Flash Please!, a book of monochrome pics of the Toronto scene from 1987 to 1992. There's also text, by former CHRW Music Director Phil Saunders. Derek is an excellent photographer and this book will be well worth picking up for fans of that era.

      21. The Dundrells....Mr Nasty....from the compilation LP It Came From Canada Volume 2, a series of 5 LP's that chronicled the best of the independent Canadian music scene of the time period. OG Records released this series and it did really well on the Canadian college music charts, exposing many to what was happening across Canada.

      22. The Dundrells...Girl, It's OK.....from their cassette release and a live version of this song was on a What Wave cassette called Live In London. Great catchy chorus on this one!

      23. The Dundrells....Nothing On TV....their first 7" and a great power pop meets garage sound and one of those songs that coulda and shoulda made the AM radio charts back then!

      24. The Dundrells....Sock It To Me....from their second 7" and a move towards funk/soul somewhat like The Fleshtones were doing.

      25. The Dundrells....Hurt By Love...from the compilation LP For No Apparent Reason which featured almost all Toronto bands.  The Dundrells were from Toronto and were around in the early to late 80's and had a fairly large Toronto fanbase. They came to London several times and played at the Key West Cafe which was on the west side of Talbot St, between King and York on the second floor.

      26. The Beaumonts....She Treats Me Right....from the compilation CD, Time Machine on Stomp Records from 1996. Early 80's combo of which some members formed The Cheshyres in Toronto in the mid 80's. This particular CD, is a really good compilation of what was happening in the Canadian garage music scene in the 80's to early 90's.

      27. 10 Commandments....Not True....also from the Time Machine CD. 10 Commandments were based in Toronto, released several singles and LP's and appeared on many compilations. They were probably the first Toronto 80's band to immerse themselves in 60's garage sounds! Singer James Booth went on to CBC Canada as a producer and behind the scenes guy.

      28. The Cheshyres....Too Many Women....also from the Time Machine compilation CD. Toronto based and only appeared on compilations during their life time. Drummer Ken Anderson moved to NYC and appeared in Optic Nerve and later the Ultra 5 and is presently in a folk duo with his wife and travels the world. Singer Wayne Pattern moved to London and joined the band the Evil Hoodoos whom we'll hear later on this episode.

      29. The Enigmas....Windshield Wiper....from the Strangely Wild EP and from Vancouver. They released one other EP and also appeared on several compilations.

      30. Terminal Sunglasses...Antenna Dilemma...from the LP Wrap Around Cool on OG Records from 1985. From Montreal and broke up not long after the LP was released as one of the members had problems with smoke in the bars where they played. This LP is set to be re-issued on pink vinyl sometime this summer. Guitarist Chris Burns still plays in bands to this day.

      31. UIC....2 Plus 2....from It Came From Canada Volume 1. UIC were originally from Exeter, a small town just north of London Ontario. They moved to Toronto and did really well for themselves, released a couple of LP's and appearing on many compilations. They reformed at the Mike Star tribute show last month and blew the roof off the place as they sounded so GREAT!! It was like stepping back into a time machine pointed at 1987 as the boys haven't lost anything since those days. They're slated to play Toronto and London sometime late this summer, a show NOT to be missed!!

      32. Electric Roaches....1 2 5....from a self released 7" and from Montreal. Don't know anything else about this one, except it's rather obscure.

      33.  Lost Patrol....No Escape....from a self released 7" and from Windsor Ontario. This combo started as a straight 60's garage combo, but with a few member changes and the addition of Karen Marrero on lead vocals, they moved towards a heavier sound mixed with lots of garage and soul. Karen had, and still has, one of the finest voices around these parts.

      34. Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet....Theme From TV...from one of their early 7" records. 3 piece instro combo who became big when one of their songs became the theme song for the hit TV series, Kids In The Hall! They released many singles, appeared on a ton of compilations and released a few LP's. Everything was collected on a box set for the last record store day. Live, these guys were really fun to see as you'd never know what they would play.

      35. Legend Killers.....99th Floor....demo from 1986 and from London Ontario. These guys had the record of appearing on every compilation that we ever released! A record that can't be beat! They release a 7", cassettes, and later a CD and appeared on many compilations.  For a while, they were the most popular band on the bar circuit here in London and you were guaranteed a good time at a Legend Killer show!

      36. Boy From Nowhere.... Heart Full Of Soul....from Thee Cave Comes Alive LP from Greece on Action Records. Long time London Ontario band that played just about everywhere here in the city and only appeared on What Wave cassette compilations. They also played at our wedding (as did UIC and The 3D Invisibles) and in our basement and have been back playing together for several years. Check them out live if you get a chance as lately, they've added Jade on keyboards for a more 60's type of sound!

      37. Flying Squad.....Paint It Black....recorded live in Oshawa Ontario. Another London band, this band was disliked by many as singer Tim could clear a room with his facial antics while singing. But if you just listened, you'd hear one of the best voices around and some really fine biker rock! Flying Squad released a 7", cassette and appeared on many compilations.

      38.  Captain Scarlet and The Mysterons.....Are You Really Gone?...from the 7" Four Whom The Bell Tolls that came free with What Wave 16 from 1988. 3 piece from London Ontario that featured Andrew Lewis on drums, who is now a world  famous poster designer. Singer Tom Dumphy is a member of The Rizdales, a country outfit known throughout North America.

      39. The Mongrols....Plastic Girl....also from the above record. Another local combo who originally went by The Ungone, but switched names for an unknown reason. Not to be confused with the other Mongrels, another local band from the present. The Mongrols appeared on several compilations.

      40. Frankenstein 5....Feel It... from their cassette and also from London Ontario. Our only pure 60's garage combo here in London. They appeared on many compilations and even did a short tour of the Eastern United States before packing it in.

      41.  Broken Arrow.... You Ain't Trickin' Me....from the What Wave cassette Baloney Sandwich. Another local combo that featured at least one member of the Mongrols and played around town live a fair bit.

42...The Evil Hoodoos....Same All Over.....from a demo and another local combo here in London that featured a member or 2 of the Frankenstein 5 and Boy From Nowhere.

      43. The Supreme Bagg Team....Crankin' With Elvis...from Mr Garager's Neighbourhood and also appeared on a What Wave cassette. These guys were from Toronto and played London at least once. They released a 7", LP and appeared on many compilations. This particular song is a fave of mine.

      44. The Chessmen....Adventure....from their only LP released on Zapp Records and from Hamilton Ontario. The Chessmen played London a couple of times and hosted many of their own shows in Hamilton, bringing in out of town bands and creating a scene. They released this LP and appeared on many compilations. Drummer Mike White authored the recently released Popkiss book, the story of Sarah Records and also wrote for many publications.

      45. Purple Toads.... Gonna Have A Good Time....from their first LP on Star Records and out of Oshawa Ontario. This song title summed up the Purple Toads as they always had a good time and opened for many of the bigger bands in Oshawa and Toronto. They played London countless times and released 2 LP's and appeared on many compilations.

Big Thanx for all the crazy phone calls tonite!!! And all those facebook messages, emails and Heys!!!! Glad to hear that some of you had as much fun listening as i had putting this sucker together!!! The 2.5 hours went by like nothing for me and brought back a ton more memories from those days!

      1. The Mighty Ffud....Pointless....from their second CD, self titled. From Montreal and were in town 2 weeks ago at Call The Office and they sound exactly like their recordings! Radio What Wave Playlist May 26/2016    Denim Delinquent Special

This episode featured an interview with Jim Parrett, editor/publisher/chief spender of Denim Delinquent fanzine. DD was started in Ottawa Ontario way back in 1971, long before the punk zines, and lasted 7 issues. All the issues have been reprinted in book form by Hozac Records and just recently released.
All songs/bands played on this show were highly recommended in Denim Delinquent or the bands were interviewed or live shows favourably reviewed. In other words, all DD certified cool combos!!

      1. Crowbar....Oh What A Feeling....from the Bad Manors LP 1971 and out of Hamilton Ontario. Legends in Hamilton and faves of Tom Wilson, this song was actually a minor hit on AM radio way back when.

      2. The Seeds....Nobody Spoil My Fun...from The Seeds first LP. This song was DD's motto! In the DD book, there's a full colour pic of Iggy Pop sporting a Seeds Tee and looking mighty cool!

      3. Blue Oyster Cult....Stairway To The Stars....from their first LP from 1971. There's a couple of lyric lines quoted in DD....you gotta listen to the song and then read DD to find out what they are.

      4. The Stooges....Search And Destroy....from the Rough Power CD on Bomp Records. Bomp head honcho Greg Shaw is mentioned more than once in DD, and again in the interview with Jim. One of the most influential people in music i nour lifetimes.  Played this as there's an interview with Stooge Ron Asheton saying how much he hated the Bowie mix of Raw Power, so we played a different mix of Search and Destroy!

      5. Thundermug.....Africa.....a hit single from 1972 from this London Ontario based combo!! DD really dug Thundermug and I remember digging this when it was played on AM radio back in the day! At the time, I thought it was common for hometown bands to have their songs played regularly on the radio. I'd lived in Toronto prior to coming to London and heard countless Toronto bands on both AM and the FM division of CHUM. But looking back, this was HUGE to have a London based combo that I actually liked to be played on local AM radio. This has only been repeated once since in my lifetime, that being Uranus hitting the top 10 in 1980 with You're So Square!

      6. It's All Meat....Feel It....there first single from 1969 and a real killer single it is!!! When it was written about in DD, they were searching for this single as it was highly recommended. Thanks to sources like Pebbles (again, Greg Shaw released) this one became known in the late 70's.

Right about here, we had a 30m interview with Jim Parrett, covering Denim Delinquent from beginning to end. We talked about some of the bands and people Jim met over the run of the zine. We also talk about what it was like to do a zine, long before they were an understood commodity. DD was one of the first, if not the first music zine to come out of Canada and laid the groundwork for many of us to follow.

      7. It's All Meat....You Don't Notice the Time You Waste...from their self titled debut LP from 1970. Toronto based combo and it's been re-ished on CD.

      8. The Wackers....Hey Lawdy Lawdy....from the Shredder LP from about 1970. Features Bob Segarini on guitar/vocals who went on to release 4 powerpop albums in the late 70's/early 80's then went on to produce some of the early punk/new wave bands from Toronto. Later he became a DJ known as The Iceman on a Toronto FM station.

      9. MC5....Ramblin' Rose.....from a Greatest Hits CD on Rhino Records.

      10. Pagliaro.....Some Sing Some Dance....from a self titled LP from the early 70's. Another song that was a hit on AM radio here in Canada. I remember hearing this on the radio many times and it was like a breath of fresh air after some of the other stuff that aired on the radio. Michel Pagliaro was a big fave of DD and he came from Quebec where he is still a huge star.

      11. Mott The Hoople....Drivin' Sister....from the self titled LP from 1973. DD talks about seeing Mott recording a live LP in the UK in the early 70's.

      12. NYDolls....Trash.....from Rock'n'Roll, a CD with some unreleased tracks on it.

      13. The Kinks....I'm Not Like Everybody Else....from the recent Anthology 1964-1971 Box set of CD's.  This one sums up just about everything about DD and this radio show!!

Huge Thanx to Jim Parrott for taking the time to talk to us here at Radio What Wave!! If you have a chance, the Denim Deliquent book is well worth picking up as it will transport you to a time before the internet and when you still had to search through record stores to find cool tunes!

Thanx for all the phone calls, emails, facebook messages and Heys!!! Back again next week with more noise to annoy.

Radio What Wave Playlist June 16 2016

      1. Chris Hart....Burn This City....from his 2013 CD Rock and Roll Revelation. Local combo from London Ontario.

      2. Elton Motello...Jet Boy...from his 1979 LP, Victim Of Time on Attic Records. This is the English re-write of Ca Plane Pour Moi by Plastic Bertrand from Belgium, originally released in 1977. Someone asked if this was the original version of the song....it would be the original English version of the song. It's currently being used to advertise something or other on television. There's an actual wiki page for this song for more info.

      3. Coaching For Sara....Matter Of Time....from their recent self titled CD and they are from London Ontario. You can catch them live on July 2nd in St Thomas Ontario.

      4. Don't Touch The Dancers....I'm So Glad...from their posthumous bandcamp release and were also from London Ontario.

      5. Isolation Party....Tina's Ballad....from a recent bandcamp download and also from London Ontario.

      8. Alex Maiorano and the Black Tales....Get Get It...from their recent Everything Boom! CD on the Off Label from Germany.

      9. Willie Nile....Dear Lord...from his self titled debut LP from 1980. Willie is still active and was at This Ain't Hollywood in the last several months.

      10. Grievances....Cool To You....from a recent bandcamp download and from London Ontario.

      11. The Zorgs...Upright Rhythm...from their recent Chew On It CD on Transistor 66 Records out of Winnipeg.

      12. Dynamite Pussy Club.....Midnight Hour....from a recent download the band sent us and they are from Bath UK.

      13. John Cale....Mary Lou....from his mid 70's LP, Guts on the Island label. John played London a few times in the 80's; at least twice at Fryfogles and at least once at what is now Cowboy's Ranch.

      14. Art Bergmann....Runaway Train...from a Sample Of Art LP from 1988. Art comes to Call The Office on Friday June 24th.

      15. The Scenics...Oh Boy....from their remastered In The Summer CD on Dream Tower Records. They are doing a tour of the north east in early July, details to follow.

      16. Dave Rave Group..... Do It All Over....from the Valentino's Pirates CD on Bullseye Records from 2001. Originally released in the Soviet Union in 1990 on vinyl and if Gary Pig Gold reads this, he can give the full story as he was an integral part of the band.

      17. Maow...Wank....from the Unforgiving Sounds of Maow CD on Mint Records. Features Neko Case on drums and vocals on some of the tracks.

      18. James Carr... Dark End Of The Street....from his You Got My Mind Messed Up LP on Goldwax Records. This song was written by Chips Moman who passed away earlier this week. Chips did a TON of work in Memphis in the 60's/70's producing and writing many many hits including several with Elvis Presley, Englebert Humperdink and many others. Prior he was a session guitarist playing with Aretha Franklin and many others. Check his impressive bio on wiki.

      19. After Funk....Tricky...from their recent Til The Sun Comes Up CD. Toronto/London based soul combo.

      20. Mink Deville...Gunslinger....from his self titled debut LP from 1978. Mink Deville was one of the house bands at CBGB's and played there countless times but that seems to have been forgotten as CBGB's is more known as a punk club.

      21. Fleshtones....End Of The Track....from Fleshtones Vs Reality from 1978 and another band that played CGBG's many times.

      22. Slim Sandy....Sweet Rockin'....from his most recent CD and many of you know Slim as the drummer for Ray Condo and His Hardrock Goners back in mid 80's/early 90's.

      23. Steve Nardello....C'mon Baby....from his It's All Rock and Roll Lp from 1979 on Blind Pig Records out of Ann Arbor.

      24. Ricky Nelson.... Be Bop Baby.... from a Greatest Hits LP. Ozzie and Harriet's kid made some great music!

      25. The Milkshakes.... Soldiers Of Love....from their 1983 After School Sessions LP on Upright Records. This is one of Billy Childish's early combos. Just love the vocals on this one!

      26. Higher State....When We Say....from their brand new Volume 27 CD on 13 O'Clock Records out of Austin Texas, but the band is from the UK.

Big Thanx for all the crazy phone calls, emails, facebook messages and Heys!!!!

Next week we've got a live interview with the 24th Street Wailers who are in town that night to play at the London Music Club.

      12. Vicious Dreams.....Mess We're In....from a demo and from Florida. They play at the Old East 765 on sunday night.

Right around here was a short interview with Michael Archer of the 24th Street Wailers who were in London to play a show at the London Music Club. BTW, they put on a killer show!!

      13. 24th Street Wailers....Don't Cross Me...from the recent Where Evil Grows CD.

      14. King Salami.....Tiger In My Tank....from a brand new 7' on Dirty Water Records from the UK.

      16. Los Chicos....Miami Beach....from the recent Rockpile Of Shit release, again on Dirty Water Records!

      17. The Ugly....All Because Of You....from the Last Pogo LP from 1978. This goes out to drummer Tony Torcher who passed away earlier this week.

      18. The Johnnys....Music Lover Man....from their I LIke It A Lot CD from 2007 and we dedicated this one to Tony Torcher.

      19. Split Squad.....Now Hear This....from a recent download and these guys are on tour in France right now.

      20. Hunter Valentine....Break This...from their 2007 CD The Impatient Romantic and from Toronto.

Big Thanx to Michael from the 24th Street Wailers for calling in and being interviewed. And a huge thanx for all the phone calls, emails facebook messages and Heys!!

Radio What Wave Playlist June 30/2016. All Canadian Show to Celebrate Canada Day!!

This show was an extended (2.5hour) version of Radio What Wave playing only Canadian music and a lot of stuff we either haven't played in ages or never at all. The music was as diverse as Canada this time out....enjoy!!

      1. 24th Street Wailers....Wicked....from their 2014 CD of the same name. Caught The Wailers at the London Music Club last week and they once again lived up to their name!! They've been living/based in Austin Texas for the last while, and that bit of extra seasoning has really added to their live show. Catch them when they hit your town as they're always on tour.

      2. Leeroy Stagger and The Sinking Hearts....Where I Live...from their Depression River CD from 2006. Don't know much about this combo as this was one of those CD's that showed up in my mailbox at CHRW and I really dug it! Kinda like a northern version of Steve Earle and there sure ain't nothing wrong with that!

      3. Junkhouse....Small Town Romance...from the 22 Original Hits/22 Original Stars CD compilation from Hamilton that came out in the very early 90's. This is well before Junkhouse hit the big time on FM radio, not only across Canada, but across a good part of the world. Longtime veteran Tom Wilson lead this group after disbanding the Florida Razors, another band that should have gone on to big things.

      4. Sharkskin....Run Men Run...from the above 22 Original Hits compilation CD and features guitar wizard Coyote Shivers, whom you may remember from the Dave Rave Conspiracy and other combos. This particular song was a tribute to the Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet.

      5. Rat Bastards.....Swamp Spree....from the Cows Go Mu CD compilation put out by our sister station CFMU in Hamilton around 1993.

      6. Dave Rave....Ann Marie....from his Live With What You Know CD from 2010. One of my all time fave pop tunes and we had the pleasure of having Dave Rave come on Radio WW live and play this tune solo acoustic!! Dave's been live onair a couple of times with us and always has TONS of rock'n'roll stories as this guy is touring the world constantly!

      7. Simply Saucer....Almost Ready Betty...from the Half Human Half Live CD from 2008. SS came to town when this one came out and a huge crowd of about 12 people came to see them! But they were still fucking awesome and sounded just like the records!!! Now they play the big festivals around the world...

      8. Herald Nix...Take A Drive....from the Open Up The Sky CD from 1997. West coast rockabilly/rock'n'roll combo that sounds psychedelic on this particular track.

      9. Stompin' Tom Connors.....The Pole and The Hole....from The Unpopular Stompin' Tom Lp from 1976 on Boot Records. The ultimate patriotic Canadian performer! This is my fave Stomper LP as the cover is black with a skeleton standing in the middle wearing cowboy boots, leather vest and black cowboy hat! A punk well before it was fashionable!

      10. Tripping Hazard.....Taste Of Spring....from the Wron: Suicide Goat CD and another combo I know nothing about and the CD magically appeared in my collection. A quick search reveals they are from Toronto and definitely an artwrok combo!

      11. Jill Porter....You Made Yourself Clear....from her self titled CD from 2005 and from Newfoundland. Got this one recently from Ricochet Sound, The Gruesomes label in Montreal and been really digging this one, hence it's appeared on a few recent Radio WW's. The guitars have that interwoven sound that The Real Kids from Boston had/have, which to these ears, is the essence of early 70's rock'n'roll! BTW, The Real Kids played the Burger Boogaloo earlier this week and then showed up at the Dirty Water Club in the UK a couple nights back. There's FB pics of The Real Kids with The Diodes together at that show!!!

      12. Little Foot Long Foot....King Hipster....from their Harsh Words CD from 2009. 2 piece combo from Toronto who have released a couple other CD's.

      13. The Mogs....Hate...from the El'Mogamundo! CD from 2 years ago and this goes out to our good pal Rob Munro who left us way too early! Rob's dream was to reform The Mogs and get these songs recorded and released.

      14. Roger Zuraw.....Freight Train Through My Head Blues...from the Feels Like Blues To Me CD from 2007. Roger is a singer/songwriter based in Etobicoke and plays out fairly regularly.

      15. The Sadies....1000 Cities Falling....from the Favourite Colours CD from 2004. Another one of those bands that is constantly playing and touring the world. They come to London in a couple of weeks for the Home County Folk Festival and will probably be playing the main stage late at night....highly recommended!!

      16. Kensington Hillbillies....Straight To Hell...from the Bones in The Backyard CD from 2005. Former Londoner Lucky Pete Lambert plays the drums in this combo. You may remember Pete for such memorable combos as NFG and 63 Monroe in his younger days.

      17. The Mongrels...Do It.....from their demo and they are playing saturday night opening for Moxy at the 765 East and then on sunday for the monthly Rock'n'Roll Rent Party.

      18. The Kards....Every Time You Walk Into The Room....from their Here's The Deal CD and they are playing the Byron Legion on July 9th.

      19. The Guess Who....Heart Brokin' Bopper...from the Rockin' LP from 1972. This was the first ever Guess Who LP I bought and I really couldn't get my head around how drunk the band sounded on many of the songs! Many of the songs sounded like piss takes to me and how could noted producer Jack Richardson let the band get away with this shit! Stil don't get it to this day, but still love this particular song as it's nothing like any of the other songs by The Guess Who. It's like they're slamming their fans!! Maybe they were punk before punk! Later releases will shoot that theory down...ie anything with Dominic Troiano on guitar.

      20. Ugly Ducklings....Hangman....from the compilation CD Thump and Twang on Pacemaker. Nothing like their earlier garagepunk tunes, this one's a dark and moody look at what happens prior to a hanging. There was a CBC video for this filmed in about 1968 that you might be able to find on youtube. The Pacemaker label has released many obscure Canadian recordings and is run by a former CHRW DJ, Peter Burnside.
And on this particular song, Mike McKenna was lead guitarist, which takes us to...

      21. McKenna Mendelson Mainline....Think I'm Losing My Marbles....from the Stink LP from 1969 and recorded in the UK while the band was resident over there. Probably my fave MMM tune as this one gets stuck in my noggin every now and again. Vocalist Joe Mendelson released several solo LP's in the early to mid 70's and they carry on this humorous style of songwriting. There's an excellent video with comedian Rick Mercer going to visit Joe Mendelson at his cabin out in the woods which is worth your time searching for.

      22. Perpetrators.....The Z Rays Cured My Hangover....from their Towtruck CD from 2009 and from Winnipeg.

      23. The Paperboxes....Coffin Nail....from their second CD from 2009 and based in Nanaimo British Columbia. A duo who are heavily influenced by the guitar playing of Black Sabbath and the late 40's country blues of the south. Ran into singer/drummer Marcus Hastings recently at the Pack AD show here in London where he was a merch guy and doing work for the band. Marcus snuck up to me and said 'Hey Dave, look at this' as he pulled up his sweater and there was a What Wave tee shirt underneath!! Thanx Marcus, that sure gave me a boost!

      24. The Paperboxes....You Be The Dog....from their first CD and they came to London with The Pack AD (then called The Pack) and played a couple of shows at a place called The Brunswick, which is long gone. A great show and would love to see The Paperboxes get back together and do some more shows!

      25. Jerry Jerry and the Sons Of Rhythm Orchestra....The Drift....from the Battle Hymn of The Apartment LP from 1987. JJ were one of those bands that played London many times and always put on memorable and killer shows!! These guys could out drink anyone and proceeded to do that every show, blowing minds at every appearance. My all time fave JJ show was when they played a place called Bannisters in Hamilton Ontario and were opening for the Long Ryders. The Long Ryders were all rock star resplendent with their ID tags and rock star passes around their necks, not letting us members of the underground press near their guilded dressing room areas. We had planned to interview them for WW zine as their records had got a fair bit of airplay around HQ's, specially that first one, 10-5-60 with it's catchy garage and power pop numbers. And it's still a classic to this day! But we never got near the band and went downstairs to see the opening band (it might have been Dave Pomfert's band) and then our good pals JJ whom we'd seen the night before here in London. Well prior to JJ going on, there was word that a huge tornado had hit their hometown of Edmonton and word still wasn't clear as to how many killed, injured, etc. There was a bit of a panic and the alcohol started flowing even faster, remember these guys could out drink anyone and they didn't have to prove it. Well JJ and the boys hit the stage, fired up on adrenalin, booze and pure panic and proceeded to put on the very best show I ever saw them do! The hairs on the back of my neck were sticking straight up and that was no easy accomplishment when you've got a bowl haircut and it's a raging hot night! But man oh man JJ and the boys delivered every once of musical energy their souls could summon up that night and blew, and I mean BLEW the Long Ryders off the stage that night! In fact, The Long Ryders broke up within days of this show! Karma's a viscious thing to fuck with!

      26. Jerry Jerry and the Sons Of Rhythm Orchestra....Blew Elvis Mind...from the 1992 CD Don't Mind If I Do and goes out to guitar legend Scotty Moore who passed away earlier this week. This is JJ's attempt at being on a major label, unfortunatly the public wasn't ready for a singer who worshipped Elvis and spewed deep thoughts of socialism and the demented life of a rock god. Bands have lifetimes/cycles and if you're not on your way up, you're on the way down. It's inevitable and a part that many bands don't recognize at the time...witness The Long Ryders above. Well one of the last times we saw JJ, there was a band called The Bare Naked Ladies opening for them. Catchy little sing along a nursery rhyme type songs and the exact same show we had seen on cablecast a few weeks prior....jokes and all the same! Well a lot of the kids at the show were there to see the BNL and JJ, even though the headliners, were just not in the optics of these kids. And that was probably the last time we saw JJ, still put on a killer show, but the opening band went on to sing about and then make a million dollars. Ain't no justice in this thing called rock'n'roll!!

      27. Jerry Jerry...Rockstar....from The Sound and the Jerry CD released as a solo CD on an indy label. Back to his roots and still as good with the lyrics as ever! Who else could write and sing a song called Talk About My Dick and get away with it? Jerry Jerry we'll never forget you and the killer shows you put on at such sweaty stinky clubs like The Key West and Call The Office!

      28. Robbie Rox....Reeming Me....from his Construction Site Lp from 1978. Toronto 1978 had a hidden punk scene happening and even further underground was this wacko singing about the world reeming him with a full horn section blasting in the background!! The rest of the LP is even better, but some of the language used isn't suitable for the airwaves. Robbie released at least 6 LP's and yep, I have and cherish them all! Only got to see him live once, at Fryfogles many years ago, but I ended up drinking too much and showing too much love to Robbie and Rena made me leave... For some odd reason, Robbie Rox has never come back to London but still plays the odd show in Toronto.

      29. The Scenics...Do The Wait....from their In The Summer Lp from 1978 and they will be at This Ain't Hollywood this coming Wednesday! A rare east coast tour!

      30. The Shanks....Mirror... from their Dark Richard Show from 2010 and from Orangeville Ontario. 2 piece combo that has moved in a much heavier direction and enabled them to tour Europe and release records in Germany!

      31. Ffud....Pointless....from The Mighty Ffud CD and from Montreal. We saw these guys a couple of weeks back and put on a great show with loads of tight harmony vocals. Former Londoner Mark Goodwin is on vocals and guitar.

      32. Painted Ship.....Little White Lies.....by request and from Vancouver 1966. This one goes out to regular listener and vocalist Captain William Hay!! Thanx for all your years of friendship and encouragement!

      33. Tijuana Bibles....Deadly Weapons.....from the Fists Of Fury CD and there might be a Leather Upper involved in this release.

      34. Stolen Minks.....Batman...You're The Sex....from their second CD, Family Boycott and from about 5 years ago. From Halifax and we had the pleasure of seeing this band a couple of times on their North American tours. Always smiling and fun!!

      35. The Stance...I Need A Reason....from the Shall Inherit The Earth CD from 2006 and from Halifax. We were lucky enough to get this combo through London right after they released this CD as they did a double bill with their good pals The Stolen Minks!!

      36. Liquid Vapours....What Kind Of Spell...from the Devilla CD and from the east coast of Canada 2010. Members of several combos got together and recorded this one.

      37. Walkin' Jacks....Summertime....from the Drop Dead CD from 2011 and somehow incestuously related to the Liquid Vapours.

      38. Grey Lands....Collide and Conquer.....from the recent Right Arm CD and from Hamilton Ontario. Caught these guys a couple weeks back at Call The Office when they opened up for Pack AD. Psych guitars raged live and things are toned down just a little on the CD.

      39. No Means No.... My Roommate Is Turning Into A Monster....ffrom the Mama CD and recorded around 1982....form Victoria BC and still around in some form to this day.

That's a wrap.....had a TON more stuff to play, but the clock went faster than usual and we ran out of time. Back again next week with another all Canadian show and a pile of requests from Facebook.....if you have more Canadian requests, get them to me right away.

Big thanx for all the phone calls, emails, facebook messages and Heys!!!! It's all for fun and hopefully fun for all.

Radio What Wave Playlist July 7/2016. All Canada Part 2

      1. The Smugglers....Canadian Ambassador....from the In The Hall Of Fame CD on Popllama Records from 1991. Vancouver based, The Smugglers were indeed world wide ambassadors for Canada and a more patriotic rock'n'roll band would be difficult to find. Some of you may know lead singer Grant Lawrence, a longtime host for CBC Radio and noted author. His latest project is a book about The Smugglers and there may even be some mention of their adventures here in London Ontario. The Smugglers played here several times, but never got the reaction they deserved and got pretty much every where else. Never could figure that out. Grant was back a few years ago to act as an MC for the Home County Folk Festival and told some stories about some of his dealings with WW back in the day.

      2. Young Canadians....I Hate Music....from the No Escape CD, a restrospective of the Young Canadians who were from Vancouver and featured legend Art Bergmann on guitar and vocals. From the late 70's early Van punk scene.

      3. Go Four 3....Just Another Day...from their debut 12" from 1985 and also from Vancouver. They played here a couple of times at the Key West and Call The Office released at least one more LP.

      4. New Pornographers....4 Blown Speakers...from their Electric Version CD from 2004 and also from Vancouver. This combo has been putting out some really fine pop for many years and tours through this area once in awhile.

      5. Rattled Roosters....Got Me Blue....from the Year Of The Rooster CD from 1993 and also from Vancouver. Caught them at least once at Call The Office many years ago and remember them putting on a pretty wild and crazy show.

      6. Handsome Ned....Wrong Side Of The Tracks... from the Ballad Of... LP that came out in 1989. This LP is a collection of pretty much everything the Handsome one recorded as he passed in January 1987, way too young. Remember seeing a lot of coverage on City TV when it happened as Ned was a fixture of the country/rockabilly scene in Toronto and was expected to do big things.

      7. Chris Houston.....Locusts...from the Elvis Monday Volume 1 CD from 1994, which was a document of a weekly event in Toronto. Many of you will remember Chris as an early and longtime member of The Forgotten Rebels and the author of Surfin' On Heroin. Chris is still active in Hamilton, and released a 7" a couple of years ago that got loads of airplay here at Radio WW.

      8. Ray Condo and His Hardrock Goners....This Is The Night....from their second LP, Hot'n'Cold on Pipeline Records from 1988. Another one that passed too early, Ray was a consumate performer and put on some of the greatest rock'n'roll shows that we've ever witnessed! They played here in London at the Key West and Call The Office a couple of times and the first time we saw them at Larry's in Toronto, became instant fans for life! The band formed in Montreal, and later a few of them moved to Vancouver and Ray carried on from there. He was about to embark on a world tour when he passed in 2004.

      9. Royal Crowns....Give It To You....from the 32 Miles from Memphis CD from 2000 and based in Toronto. Long time rockabilly drummer Teddy Fury leads this band and they are still active to this day. Caught them at the Mike Star Tribute Show a couple months back and they were Fucking Amazing!! One of the best live bands from around this area!

      10. Raised By Wolves....Burn It All Down....from their Hot Blood CD from 2005 and from Vancouver. Named after a Deja Voodoo song, these animals combined rockabilly and garage in a wild and fiery fashion! There's at least 2 7" records in addition to this CD and all are great! Ironically the band broke up to raise kids, as 2 of the members were married and decided to start a family.

      11. UIC....Don't Know....from the Witches In Credible CD from the early 90's. Originally from Exeter Ontario and moved to Toronto in the mid 80's, these guys are back together for sporadic shows. A must see band as witnessed at the recent Mike Star Tribute show in Oshawa Ontario!

      12. Flying Squad....Fie On You....from Four Whom The Bell Tolls 7" that came free with an issue of WW zine back in 1988. Local biker rock combo that scared many people out of their seats back in the day! They appeared on several WW compilations and released a 7" before calling it a day in the early 90's.

      13. Les Sinners....Nice Try....from Pebbles Volume 13 and from Montreal mid 60's. The Gruesomes covered this one, so it only made sense to play....

      14. The Gruesomes....I Try.....from Thee Cave Comes Alive on Action Records out of Greece 2004. This LP was a compilation of tracks from some of the WW cassette compilations that came free with WW back from about 1986 to 1994. The Gruesomes were from Montreal and are probably Canada's most known combo from the 80's garagerock years. They released 4 12" records which have all been re-ished by Ricochet Sound in Montreal. There's lots of bonus tracks and cool liner notes.

      15. Scarlett Ribbon.....4 In The Morning....from the CTV After 4 compilation LP from the late 60's After 4 was a CTV show that featured some of the long hair combos of the time, some of which are featured on this LP. Scarlett Ribbon was a false name for Quiet Jungle who released at least one 7" under their real name and were also the band behind the kids LP The Story of Snoopy's Christmas (which happens to be on my want list) and possibly several other projects, all released on ARC Records (or Yorkville, which was a part of ARC). This particular LP was one of the very first LP's I bought, probably in 1968, for 50 cents in a cutout bin at the local K Mart store. I bought a number of LP's from the K Mart cutout bin and sure wish I had more money back then to buy more records!

      16. The Minstrels....Let Me Fly The Sky....from their Ev'ry Which Way CD from 1992. These guys started in Quebec City and tended to move all over North America for some odd reason. They played Call The Office several times and even released a 12" EP on What Wave Records back in 1989. The timing was off, as people didn't want records then, just CD's and cassettes...

      17. Pagliaro....Some Sing Some Dance....from a self titled LP from the mid 70's. A huge star in his native Quebec, but relatively unknown in the rest of Canada except by us record collectors/cool music fans. This song was played on AM radio back in the day and was a breath of fresh air compared to what else aired.

      18. Jr Gone Wild..... Old Blue....from the Less Art More Pop LP from 1986 on BYO Records. From Edmonton and came to London several times, playing Key West and Call The Office. Back in their early days, the shows were unpredictible due to massive alcohol consumption, but when they were on, they were just amazing!!! There's a documentary in the works and there might even be some pics of the band playing Key West from back in the day.

      19. Jr Gone Wild.... Too Suble For You.... as above. One time we had these guys booked for an early sunday eve show that got a ton of publicity in the London Free Press the day prior. We were just about to head down to the show, got a call from the club asking 'where the hell is the band', the place is packed and they aren't here?'. Into panic mode and was able to find the phone number of someone in Edmonton who worked with the band, who said they were staying in Toronto and he'd try and get in touch with them. A little while later, got a call back and the band was on its way, guess they had been partying and got carried away. The band showed up at the club, all embarrassed and had to set up in front of a packed house and proceeded to tear the place down as they put on one of their better shows! Well worth the wait and aggravation!!

      20. David Quinton.....Pictures....from his Bombs and Lullabies CD on Bullseye Records. This is a collection of David's early 80's solo work. Some of you may remember David from his days drumming with The Mods from Toronto, then later on in The Dead Boys and on Stiv Bator's solo recordings. David is still active, drumming for Arson and when The Mods re-unite.

      21. The Sweaters...Do The Pop Thing....from the CD of the same name and from the west coast....released a cassette as well.

      22. The Diodes....Red Rubber Ball....from their Greatest Hits on Sony Records. Toronto new wave combo which has the honour of being the first Canadian new wave/punk band to release a record in Canada! They released at least 4 LP's and appeared on many compilations back in the day. We had the honour of having The Diodes live on Radio WW when they were in London as part of the Treat Me Like Dirt book release party at Call The Office!

      23. Angry Dragons....Got To Be You....from their self titled CD on Transistor 66 Records from 2009. My fave Canadian garage combo from that era and always tons of fun to see live!! Saw them a few times here in London, at Black Shire Pub, Call The Office and live at Grooves Records!

      24. Poisoned Aeros.....TRex.....from the Turbulance CD from 2003 and from Hamilton Ontario. One of the few glam rock combos from that era and caught them when they opened for Sylvain Sylvain at Call The Office a number of years back.

      25. The Hippies....Can Teens....from the compilation cassette Slippery's Club Hits that came with What Wave 24 and from London Ontario.....had to fade this out as we ran out of time...

Thanx for all the phone calls, emails, facebook messages and Heys!!! Back again next week with more noise to annoy.
We've got the Pink Cadillac Scat Cats doing a live to air on July 21st here on Radio WW....the night before their big show for drummer Nick's birthday bash!
