Its my all time favorite game. I've been playing since the 80's, back when it was just called "hack" and you ran it off 5" floppies (my dad brought our first computer into the home in 1980!).
After all these years I still love this game with a passion.
Here's my favorite description of it:
NetHack is largely based on discovering secrets and tricks during gameplay. It can take years for one to become well-versed in them, and even experienced players routinely discover new ones.
I usually play some sort of fighting class, human or half orc.
