Jay Reatard passed away in his sleep last night. I think it's safe to say the garage/punk community has lost a very talented, committed, and prolific musician. I was always impressed by how many singles the man could release. Not that I'm condoning any of this, but isn't it something he normally could have handled if he hadn't had the flu at this time...of course, falling asleep with that much junk in your system isn't good either...better to let it wear off before crashing. I love Mick Green's playing and I'm sad to hear he's gone - but he doesn't play on Shakin' All Over. A session guy called Joe Moretti did. Mick Green joined the band much later. A good example of Mick's playing is the Casting My Spell/My Babe single. tom blumenfeld said:

I didn't realize how young he was on some of those seminal sides. He was only 65, which means 16, 17 back then. 15, maybe? James Burton was pretty young on Susie Q, and Jay Reatard, to come full circle, was recording by 14.

I was lucky enought to see the Reatards a few years back, before I had heard of them. I was mightily impressed and had a great time.

Jay wasn't really that fat, mostly bloated. Dr John is fat & was a heroin addict for many years. Coulda been anything really. This is very sad. RIP. Blaine said:

Jay is a genius. We love you man.

I hung out with Jay at the Gories/Oblivians reunion last June and saw him again in August in Seattle/Vancouver. A true wild man of rock 'n' roll and I had a blast talking to him. It's really sad that he's gone. Way too soon. Nobody should only live less than 30 years on the planet. He will slip into immortality, for sure. Take care of yourselves, people!

A real talent. He had been making records since he was 15. I consider myself lucky to have gotten to see him play live a few times. His records rank among the best of the last decade in my opinion. A terrible loss. ♪Oh, it's such a shame♫
