I'm in the process of trying to find band members in the Bournemouth/Dorset area (UK). I play an original 1967 Supro through a Fender Champ from around 1972. I can get a good sound from it but feel very limited at the moment - I think i'm gonna need a bigger amp and maybe a couple of pedals (analogue of course). I was thinking of playing through a decent old Fender bass amp as I have been advised that this often produces good results. Any suggestions?

For what its worth, Danelectro makes the 'Spring King', real spring reverb for around $150.00, it'll even crash waves when you kick it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGgEwpzeOHE Johnny Danger said:
I'm thinking a fender tank, though I'm not too snobby to try a pedal.

I just got me that Boss FRV-1 'tank' pedal ... I really dig how it sounds and it's really cheap. It'll probably take me years to get around to saving/building a real tank and this'll definately tide me over.

Awesome, that's on the short list of things I want to try out. If you record any songs with it let us know! Johnny Danger said:

So far I've only run into the speakers on my Epiphone Blues Custom 30. I've got some Eminence Legends and I'm planning on building a cab out of some pine from a really old house. If I don't like the Eminence speakers I'll probably check out some of the cheap Weber speakers. As far as the reverb pedal goes, the guys over at the surf guitar forum (surfguitar101.com) seem to like the Digitech Digiverb. I've heard some good things about the Boss FRV-1 too. It's based on the fender '63 Reverb tank. I would like to try out the Danelectro Spring King too. It has a real mini tank with springs in it. I think you can get pretty good deals on the Fender reissue tank if you're patient on ebay. It'll take a bit more saving for me to swing that though. Brandon Reed said:
Thanks man. I usually run it into a Marshall '71 1960 Lead 4x12. I just got an old beat to hell mxr distortion + I'm hoping to work into my setup for fuzz tones.

Score on the bassman by the way. What are you running into it?

I'm also in the market for a reverb pedal as my amp doesn't have any. I've been looking around and have almost committed to buying the holy grail by ehx but havent gotten to do any testing yet. Any other reverb pedals catch your eye?

Very nice! Simplicity is always good.

I just picked up a Blackface Bassman head this week for slightly under what they normally go for now, so I'm pretty stoked about that. Next on the agenda is something to take care of my lack of reverb. I'm thinking a fender tank, though I'm not too snobby to try a pedal.

Well, after going all WHO-ish with a 50 Watt Hiwatt plus matching cabs, I´ve recently found out that Solid State Amps can be way better than their reputation.
Currently I´m using some very rare, but neverthless pretty unexpensive Jennings amps (O-50, B-50 and J-100) from the early 70s. Although there´s not one single tube in them, you can crank them pretty much and they´ll crunch like an AC 30 (not too astounding, since Jennings himself IS the inventor of the AC 30).
When playing a tour with the great Jim Jones Revue, one of their Twin Reverbs passed out and guitarist Rupert Orton was pretty freaked to use one of these - but after two seconds he smiled again.
Plus, they do take EVERY pedal extraordinarily well.
I get my heavier crunch sound with an Orion Effekte Silverdrive (the clearest Overdrive I´ve heard thus far), plus some fuzz with wether my beloved Roadrunner Supersonic Fuzz or a Barber Trifecta or an Earthquaker Devices Hoof Fuzz. Reverb comes from an Earthquaker Devices Ghost Echo - one of the best Reverb pedals there is. It´s true.
Plus I play two Hollow Body Guitars - a Gretsch 5122 (the "Cheapo-Gentleman") with TV Jones PUs and - a Hoyer Cat - a korean take on an old german brand guitar.
It´s not an expensive setup, but that should never be the point, anyway. It just sounds darn freakin´good. To me.
      And my two bands.

You're right, I read the label on it - it is the AC-4tv. I'm not the best person to ask -- it is my first amp and I've never played any other guitars or amps apart from this my first, (and hopefully only) setup. I dig it heaps - you're right that it is kind of dark- I've got the treble way up on it and the guitar for more piercing tones. On it's own it is tight and weedy/trashy sounding (in a good way) but coupled with a bigger cabinet it makes a huge expansive sound. Last weekend I used it to drive the speaker in another acts broken valve mesa boogie 12" combo -- the vox driving it didn't sound much different to the mesa boogie driving it. Even on a mismatched Peavey PA bin I had lying around the vox really opens up. So I'm now on the lookout for a 12" 16 ohm cabinet to go with the AC-4tv - for more range in tonality and to keep up volume wise with a drum kit and other instruments. The Egnater Tweaker 1x12 cabinet seems to be a good match but is stupidly expensive in my country. Might have to learn cabinet making.

We just started this adventure, still learning to play. So the setup is with stuff that is cheap, we could source and doesn't take up much room - whilst trying to be true to old garage.

Me: Danelectro Deadon? Reissue Baritone --> BYOC Leeds Fuzz (superfuzz clone) --> zoom g2 (surprisingly good reverbs and delays in cheap box) --> Vox Ac10tv ??? (tiny little valve amp)
Vocals --> SM58 --> Behringer Analog Delay (pretty much the only piece of gear Basterdringer make that sounds awesome) --> Boss Bass Overdrive

Mah Missus: Cocktail drum kit. Vocals into a Sennheiser sometin.

The kitchen has proven to be the best sounding room to practice in. So I guess we're kitchen punks.

      Guitars:
Gretsch 6119 Tennesee Rose, changed the guts out of it, pups etc.
Tele - US Made late 90's model, probably my most used guitar currently.
MIJ Strat - Don't seem to use this too much but you always need a strat + a fuzz face.
Burns 12 String - Love this guitar. Jangles quite nicely , it also holds it's tune incredibly well.
Maton EB Electric - Latest edition, a vintage 60's Australian built guitar. Does the garage tone quite well.

      Amps:
      Fender Twin Reverb 65RI
      Hot Rod 2x12 Deville
      Blues Junior

I'm on the market for a Silvertone 1448, Vox AC30 & a Ep8 ( or there abouts ) Tiesco hollowbody. I'm thinking of offloading the Deville even though it's quite the amp. I see to alternate through pedals which I have way to many. These days I mostly use a Boss SD-1, Baja Bone Bender, MXR Line Driver & A Digitech Delay.

Hello! My band The Experiments just released our new album, that we recorded ourselves. You can find it at our website for free: http://theexperiments.com We used the following gear: We recorded in Pro Tools with a Project Mix I/O (8 channels) and 2 more channels though a ART DPS II into the Project Mix's ADAT in. We used the following mics (drums): Overheads: Oktava MK-012-01 (pair) Kick: AKG D112 Snare: Shure SM57 (under) Rack Tom R: Sennheiser e609 silver Rack Tom L: Audix f10 Floor Tom: AKG D11/XLR High Hat: CAD pencil condenser The snare we did under because no matter where we put it over, the drummer hit it with his stick. That's also a big reason we used the Sennheiser on the tom, it's low profile kept it from getting hit. In retrospect, I think miking the snare under gave us too thin a sound. The guitars we did in the same room (different day), with the Sennheiser on one speaker and a Shure SM-7b on another. Vocals were done in a bathroom with the Shure SM7b We're on a budget (who isn't) and that was the best we could afford.

My gear I have at the moment.

      - Gretsch Electromatic Corvette: This was just inside my price range at the time. It's a good guitar and I felt like I could get decent single coil and humbucker sounds out of it. The Gretsch style pickups are a bit brighter and twangier than Gibson style humbuckers.

-Epiphone Blues Custom 30: I got a really good deal on this on craigslist. It's a pretty nice amp. My only issues with it would be that the clean channel is a little darker than I like (still really good but I would like a little more chime and twang for the cleans.) and also the reverb isn't Fendery enough for me. It can do the Marshally Ramones thing well though.

-Silvertone 1484 head: I waited for months to find a decent price for this. They've really gone up in the past few years. I don't have a cab for it yet but it sounded great the times I have gotten to plug it up.

-Proco Rat 2 : I won this in an online giveaway. It doesn't quite give me the fuzz tones I'm after but it's fun to play with. It works well for a good boost or to induce some feedback.

-Harmony Bobkat: Got it really cheap from a friend. It's exactly what you need for a "garage" sound. It needs new tuners and a new output jack though.

-1964 Univox 335 copy: It's actually completely hollow more like a Casino. It has the coolest greenburst color. This was also really cheap but I had to rewire it and the neck has a bit of a warp.

I'm hoping to get something to fill my fuzz desires. I haven't decided what that's gonna be yet. I'll also need to something to fill my lack of good reverb at some point.

ok... i'm a gear hoarder from way back

      Guitars:
      94 Fender Stratocaster Japanese
2 x broken Hofner f-hole jazz guitars (i will fix them one day...)
      65 - 66ish Hofner Verithin
Teisco solid body electric (converted to a lap steel cause the neck is fucked)
      cheap SG copy
Fender Jazz Bass (I made this and got a mate to paint it)
Various old acoustic guitars in various conditions (mostly fucked)

      Amps:
      96 Fender Blues De-Ville 2 x 12
Epiphone valve Junior head with a cab made out of the bottom of a little broken Hammond
      Laney Rb-9 300w with 4 x 10" cab and a 1x 15" cab
Laney 10 watt practice amp (nice clean channel, I use it for testing repairs)
      Fender Super 60 (fucked)

      Effects:
a fuckin butt load of pedals. I'm not going to list them, a mix of vintage and newer shit.

Various Mic's and a 300w powered pa speaker.

I like this! Did our first two tracks by myself in a little room and peaked the snare out. FREDDI said:
It's about ten years that I don't play with a band anymore, but lately I'm going to record something
by my own.So I bought some necessary engine machines to add at the old equipment: .

-Gibson Les Paul custom black '78
-Fender Telecaster USA (recently bought for that dry Kinks-like sound that I love)
-Fender Jazzmaster Japan crafted (good sounds especially clean)

-Fender junior pro 15 (Ideal if you need to play at home)
      -Fender sidekick 25 solid state

-Sovtek Big Muff-Boss DS1-MXR distorsion (If you?re looking for fuzz sound, one of these 3 it's good enough for me,using a wah pedal to set the tone, instead of looking for rare and expensive vintage stomps)
      -Dunlop Cry Baby
-EHX-Holy Grail reverb (expensive but excellent if you don't have a real sprig one)
-EHX-Wiggler-A kind of vibrato-tremolo-rotary with a two 12AX7 valves;if you put it at the end of the chain(with no need to be switched on),will improve your sound in general.
-EHX DeLuxe MemoryMan-It's a good delay with very weird options to experiment, but if you need to set it for a classic slapback, try something less expensive.

-A Beyer Dynamic and a Shure mics

Recently I took a Fostex 16 Track digital recorder, and a DR880 Boss drum machine... maybe not the ideal for the LO-FI style and attitude..but you spare a drummer and lot of time sometimes.

It's about ten years that I don't play with a band anymore, but lately I'm going to record something by my own.So I bought some necessary engine machines to add at the old equipment: . -Gibson Les Paul custom black '78 -Fender Telecaster USA (recently bought for that dry Kinks-like sound that I love) -Fender Jazzmaster Japan crafted (good sounds especially clean) -Fender junior pro 15 (Ideal if you need to play at home) -Fender sidekick 25 solid state -Sovtek Big Muff-Boss DS1-MXR distorsion (If you?re looking for fuzz sound, one of these 3 it's good enough for me,using a wah pedal to set the tone, instead of looking for rare and expensive vintage stomps) -Dunlop Cry Baby -EHX-Holy Grail reverb (expensive but excellent if you don't have a real sprig one) -EHX-Wiggler-A kind of vibrato-tremolo-rotary with a two 12AX7 valves;if you put it at the end of the chain(with no need to be switched on),will improve your sound in general. -EHX DeLuxe MemoryMan-It's a good delay with very weird options to experiment, but if you need to set it for a classic slapback, try something less expensive. -A Beyer Dynamic and a Shure mics Recently I took a Fostex 16 Track digital recorder, and a DR880 Boss drum machine... maybe not the ideal for the LO-FI style and attitude..but you spare a drummer and lot of time sometimes. -
