A buddy of mine (on the hideout as the crypt keeper) wanted to start this discussion but his computer crashed so here goes... Best garage/punk cover songs, give your top three, top five, top twenty...whatever. Let's just try to avoid some of the more obvious ones (i.e. Hey Joe, Gloria) or hell, I wanna know your favorites and if they fall in there then so be it..

Here's a couple of mine... starting with one of my all time favorites...

      1. Preachin' the Blues- Gun Club (Robert Johnson)
      2. I'm Down- The Mummies (Beatles)
      3. Psycho- The Swamp Rats (Sonics)
      4. Strychnine- The Cramps (Sonics)
      5. Jack the Ripper- One Way Streets (Lord Sutch)
      6. Like a Rolling Stone- The Soup Greens (Dylan)

I was listening to Little Richard's Version of "Settin' The Woods on Fire" over and over again yesterday... So that's gotta be up there.

I'll second The Saints "River Deep Mountain high" as well as their version of Connie Francis's "Lipstick On Your Collar"

The Fleshtones: Treat Her Like A Lady (Cornelious Brothers and Sister Rose)
      The Dickies: Paranoid (Sabbath)
Handsome Dick Manitoba: Ju Ju Hand (Sam The Sam & The Pharoahs from Turban Renewal Tribute album)
All of the classic rock songs the replacements only make it a quarter of the way through on "The Shit Hits The Fans"

Hmmmm.... i think covers are what make a band a good Band! i really don't know when it became uncool to cover songs, since that's what the tradition of singing, writing and playing songs is all about... here's a list of some bands I played with my favorite covers.

The Untold Fables - Hall Of The Mountain King (arranged by The Who)
The Milkmen - everytrack (my tribute band to the Milkshakes in 1985)
The Miracle Workers - You Don't Know (13th Floor Elevators)
The In-Sect - Knock Knock (The Humane Society)
The Get Lost - One Way Ticket (The Morlocks)
Reverend Beatman & The Unbelievers - Come Back Lord (Come Back Bird remake by The Chevelle V)
      The Come N Go - Baby What's Wrong - (Jimmy Reed's classic)

Some of my fave punk covers:

Toxic Reason's version of "Shape of Things To Come"
Eater's cover of "Waiting For The Man"
Pointed Sticks cover of "The Witch"
DMZ's version of the Troggs "From Home" - I never realized this was a Troggs song till recently. They totally made that song theirs in my opinion.

Geez, why does almost every thread from a year ago end almost as soon as it begins? I should shut up since I didn't log on last year except to accept friend requests (I had no internet at home and very limited time at the public library) but man no one else, either? This topic should be 40 pages long by now.

I like "Baby, I Still Need Your Lovin'" as done by the Lyres, "Why Don't You Smile Now" by Thee Headcoats, and "Social End Product" by the Makers.

Out of Our Tree is a Wailers original by the way but the last person before me probably doesn't log on anymore either so they're never going to read this.

      Be True to your School

Dead Boys version of Little Girl is also good... wait, Medication was a cover??
The song is credited to Ben DiTosti (west coast pianist) and M. Alton, who I couldn't find any info on. Anyway, I think the Standells were the first to record it. Their Dirty Water Lp came out in '66 I think. The Chocolate Watchband's Inner Mystique came out in '68. Both groups were managed by Ed Cobb, who also penned songs for both too. He most likely suggested the Watchband "cover it". Maybe it shouldn't be on the list...

Personally I think The Pandoras "Hot Generation" takes the cake. But, I'll offer some other suggestions too. 5 others in no particular order... Chocolate Watchband - I'm No Like Everybody Else (and honorable mentions for "It's All Over Now Baby Blue", "Medication", and "I Ain't No Miracle Worler") Misunderstood - I'm Not Talking The Avengers - Paint It Black (hope that's not to obvious) The Damned - I Feel Alright Dead Boys - Tell Me (say what you will about We Have Come For your Children)
