Get a vintage mic. Like an Astatic JT-30 with Cristal or Ceramic Element, EV RE-10 or American D-4-T. Or use a modern Shure SM-57 stick it into a Guitar Amp with some Delay for real Distorted Vocals. The JT-30 has very unique tone stick it into any PA for some vintage flavour. Find some on E-Bay look for Harp Mics.

We use lots of reverb both live and in recording. We have a vintage 70's PA with some very since built in verb. Also - we sometimes turn the gain all the way up on the vocal channel, and turn the volume down to add a little crunch. You can also sing through a head phone speaker.

I like to put just a tiny bit of delay on my vocals.

Hey there, I can't comment on girl vocals but I can confirm the best way we know of to get an authentic garage vocal sound in general is to stick a bit of reverb through the mic channel. I've done it for years (while playing drums coincidently) and as a band we were always praised on our authentic vocal sound. Hardly anyone does it anymore and really lets a good band down when they have really dry vocals. Try it you might like it!

For recording, try singing through a P.A. speaker (in the sudio) put a microphone on the speaker and record the vocal both from the speaker of the P.A. and dry though the board. Mix the two tracks together and then put a slap back echo on it

get a rail road speaker and cut it in half. then try putting it back together with peanut butter. maybe take a whole bunch of cough medicine. i've been told that works.
