Yeah man, a few people have told me about the David Lee Roth book. I'm definitely into checking that out. I'm a big Van Halen fan anyway. There were actually some DLR stories in the Motely Crue book—as expected he's a total dim wit, but that's no soooprize. 

Speaking of music books—I just saw a copy of Etta James: Rage To Survive today for the low price of $20! Unfortunately I did not have 20 dollars on me. That book is so hard to come by, at least for me it is. I read it several years ago and have been trying to find a personal copy ever since. One of the better music books you will ever encounter if you wanna read about hard fast living. Good stories about Bo Diddley, Larry Williams, Sam Cooke...etc. Not that I didn't respect the woman before, but her bio brought it to a whole new level. Going back tomorrow to try and snag that book, hopefully it is still there.

I read the Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt last month. One of the better novels I've read in recent memory.  Western, set in late 19th century, west coast U.S.A. Two brothers with the last name Sisters. Both are hitmen. 

Matt - That book is incredible. I'm not one for Western novels, but I've read it twice.

I'm currently reading the repressings of Jim Thompson's novels. I just started The Transgressors.

I JUST REAd miriam linna and randy fuller's bio on Bobby fuller , "i fought the law". You can imagine the artist's brother and biggest fan would get it right. They did.    I'm reading "Hardcore Zen" by my friend , Brad Warner. Brad was in a Cleveland HC band , Zero Defex , and the Cleveland/Chicago Psych band , Dimentia 13. HE RELOCATED TO JAPAN , and found himself working his dream job , at Tsuburaya Studios (Ultraman.). Along the way he became a student of Zen Buddhism , and , eventually , a recognized Priest. THE BOOK IS BASICALLY ABOUT HIS JOURNEY, AND HOW IT MAY OR MAY NOT HELP YOU. There's a lot of humor , monsters and Punk Rock.             excuse the caps. It's late.

i'm reding Marky Ramone's book "Punk Rock Blitzkrieg". Never mind the title , this is a VERY cool Rock Read. I'VE MET MARKY A COUPLE OF TIMES , AND HE DOES HAVE A GOOD WAY WITH A STORY. His sense of humor and attention to details accentuate already - great stories. He does talk about Dust , Wayne County and Richard Hell before getting to the main event.

I found Dennis Dunaway's ( Orig.ALICE COOPER group Bassist.) book, which I had'nt seen , anywhere , SINCE IT CAME OUT ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF AGO. So , I'm going to start on that.

Dennis has a great way with a story. I met him , briefly , just before the book came out , and I asked him about the Alice Cooper Group backing Gene Vincent at the Toronto Rock'n'Roll Revival. HE LIT UP LIKE HALF OF OLD FREMONT ST. (VEGAS) , telling me about how psyched they were to be in the presence of true greatness.  He also told me the original pre - A.C. Garage band , The Spiders , got billed over The Yardbirds in PHOENIX , THOUGH , OF COURSE, THE YARDBIRDS CLOSED THE SHOW. He said they had the nuts to precede The Yardbirds with an all - Yardbirds set , after which THE YARDBIRDS BLEW THEIR SHIT AWAY.

Just finished two great books by authors I've always known of but never read, Paul Auster's New York Trilogy and JG Ballard's Drowned World. On to lsome non-fiction now with Owen Jones The Establishment.

i just started reading the new autobiography of Terry Gibson (Lead Guitarist , Downliners Sect - classic lineup and 70's reunion , plus the F.U.2 Punksploitation LP !). It's written in a very sparse , laid back style.It promises to be a thorough look at one of Britain's finest , and still kickin' arse , R'n'B/R'n'R outfits. The many rare photos don't hurt , either. Currently: 20th century latin american writers like Borges, Marguez, Neruda, Rulfo and Allende for a history class, also contemporary finnish (yep, I am a finn myself) "serial writers", a couple of trilogies or even quadrilogies.

I'M READING AN ADVANCE COPY OF BRIAN MCMAHON (electric eels , Cool Marriage Counselors , Brian McMahon Mit Das Volt)'s autobiography , due out soon from Hozac press. What's interesting is , he has other people comment on his own commentary , and I've been asked to do the same . here it'll end up ,I'll just have to wait and see......I JUST FINISHED "Iggy Pop Neighborhood Threat" written by former Iggy And UK SUBS BASS PLAYER, WHOSE NAME ESCAPES ME . Not much insight to Iggy's off stage personality , it deals more with Andy McCoy , ex - Hanoi Rocks and Iggy Guitarist , whose habits nearly deep sixed the whole operation. But , I saw Iggy with this band , twice , in '88. Finding out that Andy was in the band did seal the deal for me. The photos are largely amateurish , and some are decent personal shots with Iggy , his then - wife , Suchi ,  and the band. All in all , it's a good Rock 'nRoll road read

Hey , John. I'm leafing through Kenneth Anger's "Hollywood Babylon 2". Good read , even some of the people I'd never heard of. I read the first one , years ago.  Sometimes , Anger's sarcasm is kind of taxing....No , I did'nt think they needed to wreck as many Police cars as they did , either in "The Blues Bros." , but , does the MOVIE still hold up ? Hell , yeah.   I nearly met Anger , once. He turned up , unannounced , at a screaning of the John Barrymore "Jekyll and Hyde". I tried to go over and say hello , as he was leaving , but, he was having a conversation with someone .

Brian McMahon's book is due out in days. Look out for it.......

..... What was interesting was , that Iggy book had a grainy reproduction of the newspaper ad  for the August '88 "Greatest Show on Earth" Chicago Aragon Iggy Pop / Ramones show. The Dickies were on the bill , too , but , it was'nt announced til the day of the show. I WAS PSYCHED ABOUT THAT , I'D BEEN TRYING TO SEE THE DICKIES FOR YEARS !    I thought Iggy  and The RAMONES HAD EQUAL BILLING , But Iggy had top billing , which meant he had better access to the lights and sound , and played about twice as long as The Ramones. The mix was very bad for The Ramones' set , but , the Dickies came out sounding good , in a set that lasted about 25 minutes. But , it was a good time , overall.   I FOUND A COPY OF THE AD , RECENTLY. i WAS'NT SURE IF i'D SAVED IT OR NOT.

I guess it did'nt turn up ,before , but I just read Phil Lynott's bio , one of 'em. It stops short of sensationalism. Of course , the drink , drugs , violence , marriage problems and even flirtations with Dance music (??) are covered , tho' not in gory detail.  Lynott's first and last meeting with his Father is'nt mentioned at all. 

Just finished reading "Shock and Awe: Glam Rock and Its Legacy from the Seventies to the Twenty-First Century" by Simon Reynolds. I really dug it, although I was less interested in the "artists" in the pop spectrum of today that's borrowed from the glam ethos of yesteryear. The author makes a valid point, so I understand him including them in the book. And "glam" isn't just Stardust Bowie/NY Dolls glam in this book, as it also covers rock 'n' roll bands that went heavy on the theatrics in their stage show. Highly recommended, if you haven't already read it.
