Gun to your head, what garage album would you pick to be the greatest of all time? (from any era, but not including comps).

I guess it's obvious, but I'd have to go with The Sonics - Boom

Love me some Count Five, Sonics, Cynics, Monks, Electric Prunes, Them, et al.

But my top choice(s) came out within the last 15 years or so, specifically the first 3 Greenhornes albums: Gun for You; Self titled; Dual Mono.

They've since cleaned up their sound a bit (and **** is still my favorite LP from 2010), but if you can get the Boscobel Blues EP from Third Man (Vault Package 6), it's worth the price you'll pay on discogs or ebay. Earlier (rawer - Jack White produced) versions of songs that would later appear on their glorious East Grand Blues EP. And a fantastic cover of James Brown's I'll Go Crazy.

Damn, The Sonics are hard to beat. I'd probably second that. While it's not necessarily representative of the garage sound, Black Monk Time by the Monks is a straight up killer album. I Know You Fine, But How You Doin' by the Gories is also a personal favorite.

I'd probably push someone out a window if they were dancing ON my LP.

I also agree! "On Fyre" makes you wild! When I left my last apartment, I had a party to celebrate this with friends and it's while dancing on this LP that one of them passed through a window! We had to go to the hospital at 4AM, completely drunk! "Don't give it up now", "Help you Ann", etc are great tunes! I don't know if the guys are still touring in Europe or not...

The Lyres - "On Fyre" 1984 or The Monks "Black Monk Time" 1966. I also would throw in The Black Lips "Let It Bloom" 2005.

      NOBUNNY - Love Visions

      Oblivians - Popular Favorites

The Missing Links - The Missing Links

And so on, too hard to pick just one.

The Stooges - Funhouse is the greatest album ever made. Does that count? if not I'll go with The Oblivians - Soul Food or The Monks Black Monk Time.

I think garage had its rebirth in the 70's through comps like Nuggets and Pebbles because it let people hear amazing gems off albums that were sometimes sub par. Bands like The Merry-Go-Round, or Q65, while they released classic singles, I don't think they had great full albums.

Aren't garage punk and greatest album mutually exclusive terms?  On vinyl, going round at 45 rpm, on some obscure label, and lasting no longer than 2:20 - otherwise it doesn't count (he said controversially).

Alright, for super current I have to throw Ty Segall into the mix.  Either his self-titled or his collaboration with Mikal Cronin Reverse Shark Attack.  Maybe not "best of all-time" but I think we've pretty much moved away from that exclusive here and those albums play constantly for me.  Also, seconds or thirds or whatever on The Cramps.

Anyone yet mention the best Aussie punks ever, yet?

The Missing Links - Missing Links.  How more punk can you get than 5 minutes of backwardness in thee outback that is actually listenable - "H'tuom Tuhs", first time I heard it I was convinced it was some digereedoodee Aboriginal on dream time lsd.  Like a boomerangoo I keep coming back.  Feedback, stupidness and bongoes... love it.
