Thirteen years have passed since the Dukes of Hamburg split up in 2001. And now, finally after all those years, Germany´s number 1 Beat Band is back, reforming both in the USA and in Germany at the same time! Yes, you heard right, there are two Dukes of Hamburg, and both are a mix-up of each other. The Dukes from Bielefeld, Germany and the Dukes from San Francisco, USA.
In the early 90's, Thilo Pieper went to San Francisco and formed with musicians from the Mummies, Astronauts, Phantom Surfers and on Bass Shannon Smith, son of the the actor Kirkwood Smith (Robo Cop, the dad on That Seventieth Show) the original Dukes of Hamburg. They released four albums, toured up and down the country and truely became cult favourites on the West Coast and in Europe where they toured frequently.
In 2001 Thilo went back to Germany and the band called it quits. Nothing happened for over a decade, but then all of a sudden two line ups formed at the same time on two different continents.
So what’s new? Absolutely nothing! The Dukes of Hamburg have that sixties garage sound down pat, they still do high energy, extremely listenable and danceable 60´s standards and carry on the german beat tradition of outrageous covers.

Their new 12“ vinyl release „Liverpool Beat“ on Dionysus records is a homage to European Beat music from the 60´s. It features 14 songs from German Beat legends like THE RATTLES and THE PHANTOM BROTHERS, but also international celebrities such as THE EASYBEATS and THE PRETTY THINGS are represented here. These songs all have a place of pride in the live set of the Dukes.
The LP cover is a true to the original copy of the super rare red Ariola 12“ album by „Mike Rat &; the Runaways“ of the Liverpool Beat series released in Germany 1965. It features a black and white photo of the Dukes of Hamburg in the same pose as the „Pretty Things" on their debut album.
