    • Radio What Wave Playlist December 18/2014  All Xmas Songs!!

      1. Marshmallow Overcoat....Santa Fuzz....from their double Best Of LP that came out earlier this year. And vocalist Timothy Gassen also released the excellent Knights Of Fuzz book that makes a great Xmas gift for you or yours!

      2. Joey Ramone....Merry Christmas ( I Don't Want To Fight Tonight)....from the 2012 Ya Know? CD.  Way different than the more known Ramones version.

      3. Mack Rice...Santa Wants Some Lovin'...from Trailer Trash Christmas CD.

      4. Mojo Nixon....Trim Yo Tree....as above. It's a 1999 compilation CD put out by Platinum Entertainment.

      5. The Fleshtones....Canadian Christmas...from the Stocking Stuffer CD on Yep Roc from 2008. Bassist Ken Fox who just happens to be Canadian, penned this little upbeat number. Caught The Fleshtones live this spring in Hamilton Ontario and as always, the most energetic and real rock'n'roll band on the planet!!! And that was the last time I got to hang out with Rob Munro who passed away this summer!

      6. The Fleshtones...Mr. Santa Claus...from the above.

      7. The Fleshtones....Christmas with Bazooka Joe....from the above.

      8.  The Gruesomes...Santa Claus....from the Unchained 12" EP on Primitive Records. They used to change the words a little bit when playing it live around us.....something about a new What Wave hahahahaha!

      9. The Sonics....Don't Believe In Christmas...from the Black Christmas compilation.

      10. Lazy Cowgirls....Sock It To Me Santa...from a Bomp 7" and originally done by Bob Seger back in the mid 60's.

      11. 63 Monroe....White Christmas....from a single they released in 1984. One side mono, the other stereo and meant for radio play.

      12. Bitchlove....All I Want For Christmas Is Some White Stuff....local 2 piece combo and from a demo.

      13. Bitchlove...Santa Eats Your Cookies While You Sleep.... as above.

      14. The Youngsters....Christmas In Jail....from the Black Christmas compilation.

Right around this time we had our usual Christmas message from The Legendary Stardust Cowboy!!! Thanx Ledge!!!

      15. The Razorbacks....All The Girls Look Prettier at Christmas....1987 7" on Tradition Records. Toronto rockabilly combo who used to play London a fair bit.

      16. MX 80 Sound....Christmas With The Devil....from their American Music CD from several years back.

      17. Plan 9....Merry Christmas....from a 1984 7" on Midnight Records. Plan 9 made several trips to London from about the mid 80's to early 90's. Each time they had a slightly different lineup and a slightly different sound moving from 60's punk/psychedelic all the way to jazz rock with psychedelic overtones. Always a fun time to see Plan 9 playing live.

      18. Thee Eviltones....It's Christmas...a demo from last year. UK combo.

      19. Shonen Knife....Space Christmas....from a 1989 7"

      20. Paul James Band...Run Run Rudolph....1986 7" from this Toronto combo.

      21. Mach Bell....C'mon Santa....from the Gulcher Chrismas sampler CD. Mach was in Thundertrain, a Boston area combo that released at least one LP that is kinda proto-punk sounding.

      22. The Shanks....Christmas Star....from their The Dark Richard Show CD from 2010. Orangeville Ontario duo who are big in Germany and almost unknown around these parts. Doesn't make sense at all....

      23. The Cheepskates....Christmastime With You....from the Midnight Christmess compilation LP from 1984.

      24. The Rooks....Christmas....from a 1992 demo CD. NYC based powerpop combo.

      25. Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet.....Xmas Medley.....from a CBC Radio special, probably 1989 or so and we had to fade this one out as time elapsed.

Big thanx for all the phonecalls, emails, facebook messages and Heys!!! Taking next week off and Megan (from CHRW's Play Dead Radio) will be hosting and playing even more Christmas tunes.  Back on January 1st in the usual time slot!! Happy Holidays!!

    • Radio What Wave Playlist December 11/2014

      1. The Subhumans....Model Of Stupidity....live at Cedar Lounge, London Ontario Canada 6/12/1981 and this goes out to vocalist Wimpy Roy who passed away earlier this week. This was The Subhumans first of 3 appearances here in London. London was one of their better shows as I caught the Toronto show at The Edge the day before or after this one and there were very few out to see the band.

      2. The Subhumans....Big Picture....from the Incorrect Thoughts LP, original pressing on Friends Records (later releases had a slightly different mix and were not authorized by the band). Check the rear cover of this one as one of the gig fliers has London's Zellots listed, during their Vancouver tenure. You can read all about The Zellots in Mongrel Zine 9 and 10.

      3. The Subhumans....Behind The Smile....from the Vancouver Independence LP on Friends Records, early 80's.

      4. The Subhumans....Dead At Birth...from the Incorrect Thoughts LP. This LP was one of my faves when it first came out as lyrically it was spot on to what was happening and Mike Graham's guitar work is stupendous. Watching Mike play guitar live is always jaw dropping.

Around here I was yammering about Wimpy Roy, The Subhumans appearances in London and playing in the background is the song many of you were singing along with....we don't care what you say....FUCK YOU!!!  Simon Less.

      5. Subhumans....I Got Religion....from the New Dark Age Parade CD from the reunion circa 2006. 25 years later and nothing lost or gained sound or lyric wise.

      6. DOA....Singin' In The Rain....from the Let's Wreck The Party LP from1985. Wimpy Roy used to sing this song live for many years when he was bassist for DOA.

      7. DOA....Liar For Hire...from the War on 45 LP from 1982 and the first DOA LP to bring the band to a bigger audience. And a FUCKING Great LP!! This one has never lost it's appeal to me in over 30 years!

8 Dead Rabbits....No Way....from the Boot To The Head CD from July 2002. This was a reunion of a few of the London and area bands that used to play at the Cedar Lounge here in London. London's home of punk rock/new wave/whatever until closing in May 1982. Spent way too much time at this club. This was a request that goes out to KP, who also supplied The Subhumans live tape that started the show!! 44i

      9. Heart Attack Kids...Platonic Love Bomb....brand new 7" EP on Speed City/It's Trash Records from here in London. Fairly new 2 piece combo that are loads of fun live.

      10. Heart Attack Kids...Shoulda Came From Japan.... as above.

      11. The Pack AD...Night Crawler...from a CD compilation called House Of Burners. Sounding nothing like the Pack AD that we all know and love, this is a Thee OC's cover. BTW, Pack AD were excellent as always when they played live last week at the London Music Hall.

      12. The Holy Roller....Bicycle Day... from a recent demo of this London based pop trio. Caught them live at the Rock'n'Roll Rent Party and they are a really tight pop combo that are well worth checking out.

      13. Dave Rave....4th Of July....recent demo and Dave will be in Hamilton tonite as part of the Gord Lewis Band and I'm  pretty much positive they will be playing some Teenage Head songs.

      14. Mother's Children....The Gang Is Back...from their brand new LP Lemon, on Mammoth Cave Records. Ottawa powerpop combo that opened for Paul Collins Beat here in London at our big power pop show a coupla years back.

      15. Mother's Children...Out Of The Dark... as above.

      16. King Tuff...Black Holes...from the Moon Spell CD that came out recently.

      17. Sparks...Throw Her Away....from the Big Beat Lp from 1976. I stupidly didn't go see Sparks when they were at This Ain't Hollywood within the last year or so.

      18. The Quick....No No No....from the Mondo Deco LP from 1976. West coast boy band that Kim Fowley was involved with. And ya, they do sound a lot like Sparks and that ain't a bad thing.

      19. The Sweet....No You Don't....from the Desolation Boulevard LP from 1975.

      20. The Tubes....Don't Touch Me There...from a greatest hits CDand originally from 1976.

      21. Slade....Mama We're All Crazee Now....1972 and from a greatest hits CD. Slade played London Ontario and the local review in the London Free Press said they were one of the worst bands ever.....reviewers probably do that on purpose as they know something like that will cause all us crazies to fall in love with the band!

      22. Sparks...This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us....from the Kimono My House LP from 1974 and this song is stuck in my noggin'.

      23. Hackamore Brick....Oh! Those Sweet Bananas....from a recent Ugly Pop re-issue, but originally released back in 1970. Feel those Velvet Underground vibes.

      24. Brian McHahon.....NYDNY.....from the 17 Volts CD. Former Electric Eel member's solo CD and it's a good one! This song summarizes the late 70's get outta town and move to the big city feeling that so many had back then.

      25. Eugene Ripper....Tech No Me....from the brand new Hangman CD. Toronto based and former member of Stark Naked and The Fleshtones.

Thanx to all that tuned in, phoned, emailed, messaged and said Hey!!! Much appreciated as it's all about the music!
Next week it's all Xmas tunes.....not your usual holiday tunes.

    • I'd definitely put FIDLAR on that list.  Also, here's a few bands I've been digging in 2014:

      Golden Pelicans

      Gino & the Goons

Buck Biloxi & the Fucks (maybe a little more punk than garage)

      Scraper

      Endless Bummer

I have all 13 if you are still looking for them.

Awesome! Yes, I'm still interested. Let me know how you think you can share them. Maybe a zip file?

And do you have any other complete series of podcasts? I lost all of my Primordial Ooze/Savage Kicks, too.

    • I saw Nick Lowe with Los Straitjackets (But ,sadly , not Ian MacLagan.) , last week.  His new Xmas songs are actually quite good. AND , he did "I wish it Could Be Christmas Every Day". Los Straitjackets' Chritmas album is very good , tho' it's more or less The Ventures' Christmas album updated.

The Polkaholics' Christmas EP is really cool , esp. "Sausage Balls , Sausage Balls , Kishka all the way , Oh , if we could find ourselves an all - you - can - eat buffet , HEY !".

    • GREAT SHOW , STEVE !

I'll be seeing Chris from The Polkaholics on Tuesday , probably , I'll tell him you played "Yahkov" (sic) , tho' he is'nt on that track. Polkaholics now probably have their best lineup EVER , with Chris Linster , of the late , great King Vitamin aka Giant , a former stand - in , now full - time , Bassist , and the return of Action Jackson on Drums. Their NYE show , at the majestic Dank Haus Ballroom, is always a good time , even tho' the squares have found out about it.

BTW - "WEN - SESS - LAS".   Have a good week ,  JOHN.

    • Ten more inches of Lovesores!

Yet another reason why Portland, Oregon is currently THE place to be for new music.
The Lovesores have constructed a rock and roll machine that is the equal to any on the planet.
Created by the combined talents of Jeff Fieldhouse and Scott «Deluxe» Drake (the original
songwriting and guitar/vocal team of the 90’s SoCal garage/punk juggernaut, The Humpers),
Boz Bennes and Adam Kattau (members of Portland’s own legendary Fast Takers) and Alex Fast
(bassist for Portland’s heavy rock champions, LSD&D), the «Lovesores» have become, after only
three years, one of the premier high-energy rock and roll bands in the Pacific Northwest and are
quickly generating excitement and building an enthusiastic fanbase internationally.

Four tracks on 10" vinyl is what‘s on offer and if you ever loved the «Humpers» then you know
this is gonna turn out right. With their 5 smoking hot vinyl releases, the «Lovesores» have found
the sweet (and sweaty) spot where Rock, Garage and Punk collide in an orgy of guitar-driven
      ENERGY.

      Tracklist:

      1. Mata Hari
      2. Focke-Wulf vs Spitfire
      3. Desperation Now!
      4. Get Off

    • #1 Cause Of Juvenile Delinquency!

Wild ‘n’ frantic rock ‘n’ roll bands are a dying breed in this era of shoegazey, reverb drenched indie pop, but looking like a motorcycle gang straight outta a Fifties drive-in flick and sounding like the rabid love child of Little Richard and The Cramps with a healthy dose of Rip Off Records garage gunk shot straight to the jugular.

The No Tomorrow Boys have spent the last few months trying to change that, performing relentlessly explosive sets across Portland and the greater Northwest with bands such as The Dex Romweber Duo, The Downtown Struts, and Davila 666.

The trio’s live shows are a tornado of chaos, simultaneously fun and fierce, invoking all the thrill and danger of life as a juvenile delinquent from back alley switchblade fights to lustful nights on lover’s lane. And now the boys have wrestled their primitive style of ferocious American rock ‘n’ roll onto a slab o’ wax with their debut album “Bad Luck Baby Put The Jinx On Me”, 14 tunes that explode outta the grooves like a suped up hot rod off the starting line.

So guys, grab your leather jackets and grease up your pompadours. Gals, slip on your fishnets and slap on that liquid eyeliner. No matter how you do it, get ready to flip your lid, blow your top, and dig that jive like it should be dug!

      Tracklist:

      Animal Eyes
      A-Bomp Bop
      Burnin' Up
      Rosie Rose
      Bubble Gum
Hey Babe (I Wanna French Kiss You)
I Wanna Lot (Not A Little)
      Teen-Age Vice
      Mama Get Your Hammer
      Teen Dream
      Rovin' Man Blues
      Cadillac Negro
      Firecracker
