    • I don't get it with the buzzcocks. cool cover

I personally dislike most covers from 80's power/thrash metal bands.

I really should have bought that record. Rhino's misnomered "World's Worst Records " actually contains a barf bag , but , pretty pedestrian sleeve art. I only bought it , originally, for "Paralyzed" and "The Crusher". Those were'nt even the worst records on the dates of their release. Then there's those recent Rockabilly comps with the porno covers . As Cheech and Chong used to say , "WE'LL NEVER GET THAT ON THE ALBUM COVER !!!". THE BUTTHOLE SURFERS' FIRST ep was frequently kept behind the counter , because of the multiple image of a naked , starving Biafran ?, Cambodian ? , somebody with a bloated stomach.

The picture of Santo on the back would'nt offend a soul....Unless they prefer Football to Lucha Libre.

    • EVEN PEOPLE WHO ARE'NT SO YOUNG CAN ONLY DANCE TO A DRUM MACHINE......

My take on it , Disco was introduced to the US , from Western Europe , when demand for live music was at an all time low. Of course , that , very slowly , changed with Punk. Regardless of what Spike Lee would have us believe ( Like New York Punkers in 1977 WITH GIANT GREEN GBH MOHAWKS !) , a lot of people went to Studio 54 AND Max's and CBGB's.

The idea was , that it was easier to pick someone up and take them home for some anonymous sex at a Disco , even if you DID hate the music , than at a Rock club.

Of course , the music only got worse with time , but , by and large , you did'nt have to hear much of it if you did'nt go to the Discos. Not unless you listened to whatever stations were playing the  innocuous garbage. But , the Rock stations that fought back were'nt playing MUCH better music , in hindsight. Disco just made people complacent , most people must have known it was a fad. Still , things have'nt changed THAT much. IF I GO OUT FOR THE DAY , AND I ONLY HAVE THREE HIP HOP SONGS PLAYED AT ME , AT FULL VOLUME , it has'nt been a bad day. I'VE BEEN TOLD I WAS "CLOSED MINDED" FOR NOT EMBRACING RAP AND HIP HOP , BUT I'D RATHER HEAR INSTRUMENTS PLAYED BADLY , AND SONGS SUNG POORLY , THAN SOMEONE WHO LETS MACHINES DO EVERYTHING FOR THEM. I WON'T DENY OTHER PEOPLE THEIR RIGHT TO LISTEN TO IT , BUT , WHY DO I HAVE TO? DANCE MUSIC , HOUSE MUSIC , INDUSTRIAL DANCE MUSIC , HIP HOP , RAP , is there THAT big a difference between that and Disco? I know musicians who lug their guitars and drums and amps to their gigs , often for no pay , are not as "Revolutionary" as some DJ with an orange parlor tan , chains , and a fresh fingernail polish who gets $500 and $100 IN TIPS , AT LEAST , but , if you love it , stick with it , because sometime that's all there is that's left , is the love of it.

I have heard many young people thnk the only danceable music is crappy "disco music" (crappy, esp the late 70s disco duck, YMCA-oriented wimpy stuff........as if dancing started oin the late 70s and early 80s, hahahahhahahahahhahahah...what creeps:):)!!!! What does the word "disco music" even mean??! Beats me :):)!!!! Young people have been dancing since the dawn of ages....."discos" or discoteques were created in the late 50s and the chix and teens really went wild unlike the plastic, sterile dancing to the Lady Gagas of today :):):)!!!

      Gotta "remember the ladies"!
Whether they are singing, playing an instrument, dancing, or just plain looking good, we all know that music would be dull without the female counterparts, and hell, sometimes it sure does "motivate" men. As humans, we can't resist the movement...

    •    I have'nt seen that many who were very good....Of course , I've seen some.

The Pontani Sisters (Now with a totally different lineup) really raised the bar , and that's no sexual innuendo , they did.

The song rocks , too.

    • I {heart} that tone that Link Wray has. Pussy Galore's 'Cunt Tease' has a similar tone.

    • My favorite is the guitar in "Shakin' All Over" by Johnny Kidd and the Pirates. So cool.

Also, the guitar tone in "Primitive" by The Groupies.

    • There definitely ARE Male Groupies , but , how they go about it is very different , at least , most of the time.... I've met Female rockers who were very sexy and very friendly , but , I was'nt trying to make them uncomfortable , just make conversation , and , they understood that. Whether it went beyond that , I'm pleadin' the fifth. Maybe some of them want to have Male Groupies. You have to understand , we Men are generally clueless on such matters.

Any guy with sense does'nt want to step over the line , or be out of line....

Maybe some Lady Rockers are'nt making their interest clear , because they don't want to be percieved a certain way , or they forget , WE'RE GUYS. We're the ones who need to be hit in the head once in a while , to know the other in interested.

I saw The Pandoras in '86 , and , while they had a lot of Male fans in attendance. Most of them were terrified by their sexual confidence and aggression. Not this boy.

    • I saw Mary a few years ago , she looked and sounded amazing. The album on Norton ROCKS. Not taking away from her past glories , but it's a great setting to hear her in.....One can only imagine , the unfinished Shangri - La's reunion album on Sire Records , at the height of East Coast Punk and Power Pop , might have sounded something like this.....

    • There's Margaret Doll Rod , still performing under that name , with a guitar/drums set up , often Bluesier than she was with "Dem Dell Rods" as Andre called 'em.

Honkitonkioke , From NYC (?) . She sings Country standards , with an overhead projector , using drawings on clear plastic like puppets....You'd have to see it. Words fail me.

Did anyone mention the Late , Great Cordell Jackson ? The first woman to own and operate her own studio , before Bonnie Guitar. Very seldom played with a band at all. Her solo live show was a wonder to behold. Fiery , fiercely independent and FUN. GREAT INSTRUMENTALIST , SINGER AND SONGWRITER , And , a great lady , besides....Look for "Live in Chicago" on Bugout Records.

Barbara Lynn sometimes plays solo . Do I have to tell you it's great ?

There's more. Gotta think of 'em. You're asking a man to THINK? Ohhhh, it's gonna be a long night.

    •  I can't think of that many , besides Mark Lindsay. When The Raiders were still more of a Frat Rock group , he was honkin' his horn a'plenty , and , later on the recited smoocher "Melody For an Unknown Girl.",  already out of date for it's time. I saw Mark in 2001 , and he was wailin' sax on numbers like "You Can't Sit Down" and "Night Train". Of course , The Raiders' "Louie" was more sax - driven , too. I'm not good on names . The Wailers had a couple of great sax players , inc. the guy who played with them in later years , when they stormed the Ponderosa Stomp. He killed !

Screamin' Jay played a pretty mean sax , himself , as did Ray Charles. Dave Hill from The Treniers , who's still alive and well , Dave "Bubba" Mitchell , from Milt Trenier's band , also still alive and CRAZY , as he nears his 90th Year , Earl Bostic , Louis Jordan ,  Lonnie Youngblood , The late , great , Sam Butera , Bobby Keyes , of course , Gordon from The Fleshtones , God Rest His Soul , Lora Logic from X- Ray Spex and Red Krayola , and her successor in the first band - Forgot his name - And ,who's the cat from The Pastel Six? I saw him sit in with Sky Saxon and The Seeds , it worked , too ! , Jesse Scinto , who's a younger guy , is keeping the honkin' sax tradition going , but , he does'nt seem to play much , these days....

    • I love Steven McKay's Sax playing , even tho' my brief flirtation with Avant Jazz is basically over. He added a lot to the group , and still does. Nice guy , too , met him , briefly , once.

I love a lot of that guy's playing -- Funhouse is one of my favorite albums of all time. More due to Ron, Scott Asheton and Dave Alexander tho. Yeah, I mean I grew up getting into Steve McKay's sax playing. Iggy told him to play like Maceo Parker (J.B.'s main alto man) on acid! It's kinda how he plays.

    • I'm dedicating this to Austin's Cretan Bull, which showed me in the early 80s that you could make an entertaining and funny zine. Not a bad thing for us to keep in mind...

Anyhoo, here are some old zines I like that are still around. The move to the 'Net changes things sometimes, but overall I think it's a good thing. Okay:

Bad Trip, Ugly Things, Roctober, (and here), Maximumrocknroll, Trouser Press, The Next Big Thing, Punk Planet, Forced Exposure (this last is for rekkids, not print, which is a shame. Put MRR and FE in the bathroom and you might not come out for a month! Dense...)

      {Dunno if the links will work, but if they don't this entry is in the Forum.}
