    • Check out a song penned Steve Blodgett for Finland's Them Bird Things... sneak preview at www.myspace.com/thembirdthings

      Shame, Shame, Shame, Shame, Shame!

      The single is out on Playground Music on July 1, with the entire album, "Fly, Them Bird Things, Fly!" out in August... 12 songs penned by Mike Brassard and Steve Blodgett (both of Mike & the Ravens)... Them Bird Things is the coolest collaboration between Finns and foreigners since the Winter War... produced by yours truly with liner notes by Electric Prunes singer James Lowe and Monk Eddie Shaw...

    • Went out to the "Ink n Iron" festival at Long Beach last weekend. It was a blast, cool rides and vendors, plus The Woggles, The Fuzztones, and The Sonics ! Wow...The Sonics were on fire ! Before the festival, I went with Mrs Wig and a friend to pay our respects to Johnny and Dee Dee at the Hollywood Forever cemetary. Johnny's bronze statue is awesome, Dee Dee's headstone is engraved with The Ramones logo, and lyrics from his "Highest Trails Above"...very cool stuff. We checked out a few more plots, Jane Mansfield, Don Adams, Mel Blanc...couldn't see Rudolph Valentino's spot, there was a service happening in the mausoleum he's in, so we decided to split. On our way out we drove right up by Johnny Ramone's plot...I shit you not, as soon as we were right next to him "I Wanna Be Sedated" kicked in on the radio !!! We all looked at each other and were like WTF ??? We're talkin' goosebump central...It's gotta be the coolest and weirdest moment I reckon I've ever experienced. Naturally we stayed parked until the song finished. What a crazy cool thing to happen ! I'm not bullshitting...this really did happen. Cheers, Wig

    • HEYA, I guess some of you have already heard of this (I hope I don't doublepost this here...)

      There's a new book out in France featuring some classic Garagebands and page spreads with their album covers. I haven't seen it myself, but here's Amazon Shmamazon.

      And also two write ups:

      A short one in english,

      and a longer one in french.

      Hope you dig it! If anyone has it or buys it it would be cool if you post what you think of it here!

    • naturally the pistols never mind the bollocks is the leader of the pack. they solidified the entire movement. this is an iconic album. Andy Butler said:

      yeah! the first Ramones started it all really......the ultimate garage band album...and first punk album.

      I wanted to mention Sex Pistols Never Mind The Bollocks too originally....maybe seems a bit too obvious...but really that was a classic..without them where would punk be.

    • I found that comp last year at a record store. It's fantastic. Classic punk tunes from the late 70's. Solid choice. sleazy said:

      I once had a punk collection album sent to me by an Italian friend simply called Punk Collection Vol I (I think) and it featured trax like Fall Out by early Police and other bands like The Damned, The Boys, early Patti Smithetc. ..........it had a beautiful picture of a loo on the cover....don;t remember much else about it thou.

    • Just been listenin' to entirely too much Beach Boys (as well as my guilty early ska pleasures...oh lord)

      Last summer it was all sleazy instrumentals (w/ loads of latin/tropical/bongo tunes thrown in fer good measure)...think' I need to dust some of the those nuggets off, ya dig?

      & I can't believe I'm sayin' this but I could go the whole dreaded summer without once hearin' any variation of "Summertime Blues" ...I've wore that tune straight out!

    • What's on your summertime playlist this year? Songs about summer, fun, girls, going to the beach, etc. I'll try to compile and post my own list shortly, but I wanted to get this rolling since it's already June!

    • It sounds like there's some serious talk of starting a roller derby league in my area. With my band being on hiatus, I thought it would be a kick to start a side project just to play mostly covers at their afterpartys and do Rollerland by the Twiliters. What other songs would go well on the setlist?

    • Here is a list of groups and public figures I considered seminal and far and away head and shoulders above the pack in influence:
      Cramps (who more than anyone else opened up the surge of interest in rockabilly and 60's garage to the hoi polloi)
      Stooges (like George Washington 'nuff said)
      Lester Bangs (as an early champion in the press)
      Link Wray (what band worth listening to DOESN'T owe a debt to him?)
      Ronnie Dawson (one of the top 5 concerts I ever saw)
      Fuzztones (The Lysergic Emanations LP galvanized me as a late teenager.)
      Standells
      DMZ (punk pioneers who dredged up the old muck)
      Sonics
      Dave Allen and the Arrows (for that rattle of the Mosrite Fuzzrite pedal)

      That being said, I agree with Jamie. Halls of Fame are for sports, and if we were all captains of our high school football teams or prom queen cheerleaders we wouldn't BE here!

    • Beats the living fug outta Dexter Poindexter! Doesn't anyone out there remember THAT monstrosity? "Feelin' hot hot hot!" Aye Aye Aye ARRRRRRRIBA!
      No, really, just as I had discovered in my house some scratchy old early Springsteen albums I sorta hear some of the same spirit in the new 'Dolls, which isn't a bad thing by any stretch. It brings a much needed new aspect to their music. You just can't be on a dead end heroin death wish forever not even under the best of circumstances.

    • A bit to my chagrin: you're joking, hopefully;
      it's David 'n'Syl ;
      and the NY Dolls's (and Eddie Cochran's) spirit is obviuously still there;
      plus Johansen sings better than evah;

    • thats awesome. thanks for all the info! i also found out (after searching for Ian Sippen's name) that him and Peter Sherster recorded some people and had a studio. i'm guessing this is where they bootlegged these recordings. The quality of the Link Wray and Eddie Cochran LPs (the next day after posting this i took home the Eddie Cochran too) aren't very good at all, but still great collections of some cool stuff. Thanks for telling me about those other records. do you know if they only put out these four LPs? i'll keep an eye out for the others if not for any other reason than just consistancy. hah.

      thanks for all the info!
