I've been reading his Heart of Rock & Soul:1001 Greatest Singles this week. Pretty good stuff, although I don't get the Springsteen worship.
Fuck Springsteen... Man, the bar that I call home (the Whig) in Cola-town has this gang o' Springsteen-luvers that swing by the bar ever-now-and-again, put $20 in the jukebox, and force the rest o' us to listen to not only hours worth of torturous "Boss" tunes, but also them collectively screamin' out all the fuckin' lyrix.....aaaahhhh.....then I always have to play a few cuts off the Nuggets box (yeah, the bar has Nuggets on the juke!) just to get my sanity back. P.s. same bar has the Sonics on the juke (thanx to yers truly)

Your "Louie Louie" comment reminds me of the night I spent at your place after Thee Crucials' Cola-Town show. Hungover/tipsy but unable to sleep, I got up after three hours of sleep and started reading your copy of Louie Louiseby Dick Peterson of the Kingsmen. I read about half of it. I recently ordered it and finished the other half. What a great read!

Glad I had a part in spreadin' the LOUIE-fever...that book by Peterson is great and all (cool to read about the inside story, too bad Peterson's writing style was weak in the storytellin' department, imho), but Dave Marsh's book on LOUIE is my "desert island" choice of non-fiction books...

      Ok...I'll bite:
Gino Washington Out of this World comp on Norton. This one's got everything... But I might change my mind in a bit. Hear Are the Sonics is giving me the evil eye for not picking it...
As much as I dig Gino, Here are the Sonics is my tops ...but if I only had one 45 (yeah I know...how ya gonna play a 45 on an island? fuck it!!!) it'd have to be the "original" Flip records 7'' of one late great Richard Berry and his opus, "LOUIE LOUIE" b/w "Rock, Rock, Rock" God, know I gots to go put that platter on....NOW!

Jerry Garcia - anything "grateful dead" related, so I could end myself right then and there...
      it's my suicide music...
      "oooh shades of grey."
      click - boom.

There's always a GD hater (don't worry, you're not alone) amongst the troggies until they're reminded of what the early stuff sounded like (try Can't Come Down, Cream Puff War, King Bee or Smokestack). If you don't like them, you wouldn't have that on your playlist anyway so you're stuck with the rest of us. But, if you're going to do yourself in, guess it might as well be to their only hit song from the 80's.

    • i think it is "touch of grey" not "shades of." nah, I'm definitley not a hater. but i have listened to the "dead" enough to not care for them. but i'll check out what you recommended when i go dwn to X records today. Ted's probably got that stuff lurking around somewhere... thanx. Mad Mojo Marmalade said:

    • Thanx Howie and Soul Preacher!

I was plannin' to do a sleazy r&b themed show, but I feel that's steppin' on fellow-podcaster, Rob Baker's (aka Hot Slop) feet...so I'm ditchin' that.

Maybe an all jungle/savage tunes could be pulled off...I do like the auto theme, too, but I think RadiOblivion has recently done this theme (and again all respects to Michael Kaiser)...

      Let's keep 'em comin' kids!

P.s. thanx fer the kind words Soul Preacher! Look out fer WWS 10 around March.

    • Sex, booze and drugs always seem to be good classic themes !
Jungle, monsters and stupid dances are amongst my ever favorite themes (and it seems there are millions and millions of songs related to these great philosophical themes).
And you still can check past and future episodes of the CALL OF WILD PIRATE RADIO show for more stupid themes...

And hey, I'm glad the WILD WILD SOUND is back ! One of my favorite podcasts !

    • Yeah so I'm in need of some ideas fer future Wild Wild Sound themes as I'm at a creative-block at the moment...here are past themes:
      - Instrumentals
      - Dance/Party Songs
      - Songs about numbers or luck (this was a loose theme fer episode 7)
      - Alcohol tunes
      - Girl groups/garage
      - Animal songs
      - Tunes from 1966

That is a natural pairing. I was disappointed with the last Paul Collins lp. He should have listened to Gentleman Jesse for some songwriting tips.

    • get yourself an alamo amp. or a gretsch bass amp, also a fender reverb unit & maybe some kind of tape echo like a copicat or echoplex.
get a harmony bobkat or silhouette guitar & your set

    • Only one disadvantage with having the pickups close to the strings is they can 'pull' the strings out of tune slightly due to the magnetic pull, but I dont seem to have had this problem yet......
What guitar do you use Joenzy? I find it works best on single coils, humbuckers get a bit 'heavy' but I guess it depends on the guitar, let me know what it sounds like...

    • i'm adjusting mah pickups right now... thanx for the tip! The Branded said:

yes thats a good point, 'hitting the strings hard' when you use a tube amp with a good overdrive pedal really effects the dynamics of the sound, gives a nice natural overdrive sound .Another cheap trick is to adjust your pickups to as near as you can to the strings, this will produce some good raw sounds too, then just hit an e chord and see what happens....... TWWWWAAAAAANNGGGGGG!!! he he

    • nah, you ain't gots to study that. studying music theory is subjective for me personally. even the Beatles weren't the best guitar players. it's what they did with what they had. arrangements and so on. what matters more than technicalities is in the art of your soul. you can play just one chord - but it's the way you play that chord. I'd listen to a guitar player that has heart and rawness and a certain amount of wild abandon over somebody that had a real slick sound and knows all the triads and what have yous. it's all about personal taste. just play, man. get lost. lose your mind. and hit those strings as hard as you can... croatoa said:

    • The Ette's debut Shake the Dust was much better. CoCo and Susanna Hoffs definitely sound a lot alike, but the bangles comparison is only relevant to their earliest material. Don't want anyone to think there is a power trio version of "Eternal Flame".

Also, Thatcher's Children is pretty great. All of Billy's bands haven't exactly evolved-- but the latest with the MBE does splash a little water on the old man's face.

    • This sounds more like The Misfits (Static Age-era) than the O's but pretty close to The Cosmic Psychos. Pretty interesting tidbit about Forest Ray Colson aka the Man from Mars-- http://www.sgpd.com/html/man_from_mars.html
