Making it, to me, is being able to sustain your life with your music as your sole source of income. Selling out, to me, is adopting a more mainstream sound for mass appeal and record sales. 

what bands out there could have made it much bigger, but for artistic reasons, kept it small? and how did they put on the brakes?

Lot of Pixies´s songs (on surfer rosa & come on pilgrim, for ex.) are shorter than 2 min.  The shortest (0:45) would be "you fucking die!" if we do admit it as a song.

Most of so shorts tracks are just intro..

Yes to Fred Cole. Musically , he wastes people one third his age. He may be in
 his 60's , but , he's still got plenty of teen angst. But , he's not against the younger acts , he's WITH 'em. Plus , he's such a cool , so down to earth he's sinking in it ,  person. As much as I loathe reality shows "The Adventures of Ma and Pa Cole", starring Fred and Toody , the mind numbingly rare still -ongoing R'n'R love story, could be the antithesis to"Family Jewels' , and a LOT funnier , besides.

Australia's legendary Masters Apprentices debuted with this superb 45
in November 1966, hitting hard with Undecided's raucous,
early-Kinks-inspired punk R&B but truly achieving godhead with the
flipside. Wars Or Hands Of Time is about as good as it gets, a
sublime, driving garage-psych gem later to be immortalized on the
Nuggets 2 boxset. Among my all-time top five or ten singles, and an
absolute dream to reissue. High-quality pressing taken from the recent
Aztec remaster, in full-colour jacket with all-new insert.

Prefering to release records in sets, it made perfect sense to couple
the Masters reissue with this similarly brilliant classic Australian
45. Hailing from the same city of Adelaide, The In-Sect almost
unbelievably released this sophomore single just a few months earlier,
in August of '66. I Can See My Love is a stunning rush of '60s punk
aggression, all streamlined attack powered by excellent high-speed
drumming, piercing guitar and tough, commanding vocals. We've replaced
the original's more commercially-minded flip with a wild take on the
timeless Yardbirds hit. High-quality pressing from proper master and
new picture sleeve.

Hey Adam, I love the scene (first heard The Milkshakes in 1986 or so, found out about "the scene" in '88) I've got a big pile of the records and lots of opinions about them.  I have the two issues of "Young Man Afraid Of His Horses" the all Medway 'zine put out by Sean of Vinyl Vaults/Vendetta Records.  I've seen Thee Headcoats and Buff Medways live!  Let me know if I can help at all-Matt

NICE THREAD.   Chicago calling. Hmmmmm.

My favorite , of the last 25 years , was/is The Waste Kings. They sure laid to "Waste " any and all who fancied their chances. Being comprised of past and present members of The Sapphires , God's Acre , Crown Royals , Sol - Reys , and others who were popular , or , at least , revered at the time(Saxophonist Ken Vandermark WAS the Chicago music scene for about 5 years , or so it seems .), and two singles on Estrus (And a third on another label.), still could'nt get 'em arrested in the Grunge era. If you liked the Heavy Garage , they would have been the band for you , but , alas , they never put out a long player. Their offshoot band , Crown Royals did two great Funk (As in Meters, JBs...) Instrumental releases on Estrus , though.

Of the MAYBE just over 12 other Garage or Garage - based  bands I've see surface , here , since 1987 - Cryptones , Crookshanks , Goldstars , Fang Beach , Sindells , Power Knobs , Dyes , Bama Lamas , Hoodoo Hodown , Havox , and Lava Sutra.....my favorite was a one - shot all - Garage set by The New Colony Six.

Bergen, Norway:

Past: The Tranceplants was the band that, together with the Oblivians, turned me on to Garage Music as a teenager in the nineties. They released two cds and a 7" of great psychobilly/punk/whatever as well as being an awesome live band. Rumours has it they're currently back together recording a new record. Sadly no live footage on youtube.

They mutated into the equally great sixties punk cover band The Better Men Than You:
