Radio What Wave Playlist February 18/2016. All Black Show
Since it's Black History Month, it's time to do an all Black Show!! First time we've done this and it wasn't easy getting the show down to 90m....SO many artists that should have been played!!
1. Marcellus Wallace.....Dollar Bill....from their self titled debut CD. Local combo that put on killer live shows!! The picture above is singer Ajay in action at Call The Office opening up for Barrence Whitfield and the Savages.
2. Jo Jo and The Fugitives....Chips Chicken Banana Split...from the CD Jamaica To Toronto Soul Funk and Reggae 1967-1974. Thanx to Alicks Gee for introducing me to this song back in 2006 as Alicks was our Music Director here at CHRW and used to play this one fairly often on her Magical Mystery Mondays show!
3. Wayne McGhie....Fire...from his lone LP from 1970. Another combo from Toronto and this LP is extremely rare as many copies were lost in a warehouse fire. Light In The Attic re-ished this one in 2004.
4. Jackie Mitoo...Grand Funk...also from the CD Jamaica To Toronto. Toronto had lots of ex-Jamaica and Barbados who got together and formed combos back in that era (late 60's) producing some mighty fine tunes!
5. Danko Jones...Who Got It?...from the Garage Rock! CD from 2014. Also from Toronto but now lives in Europe where he can make a living doing music. Danko and band were in town a week or 2 ago.
6. The Dice....Typical Lies....from the 12" EP on Nardem Records. The Dice were from Toronto, late 70's/early 80's and would play places like The Cedar Lounge here in London. Not really punk, they sounded more like mid 70's Stones primed on 60's garage rock before moving in a more commercial direction. Singer Gary Lima was head of the MIA program at Fanshawe College here in London and drummer Hayden Vialva plays in several bands and is involved behind the scenes here in London. Hayden was a guest on Radio WW a couple of years back due to his involvement with The Kards.
7. The Cult Heroes....Lexington....from the compilation LP Cruisin' Ann Arbor from 1982. Cult Heroes played here in London at least twice and put on memorable shows! Lead singer Hiawatha was a maniac on stage!!
8. Death....Keep A Knockin'...from the For The Whole World To See Lp that came out in 2009. This was recorded back in the mid 70's and was never released at the time. The band consists of 3 brothers who have since put the band back together and play every once in awhile.
9. Funkadelic....Super Stupid....from the 1971 Lp Maggot Brain. Big Chief released a version of this song on their first LP back in 1981.
10. Curtis Mayfield.....Pusherman...from the Super Fly soundtrack CD on Rhino. The double Rhino CD has some unreleased and instros used in the movie.
11. Last Poets...When The Revolution Comes....from their debut LP from 1970. The beginnings of Hip Hop!!
12. Little Jackie Shane....Papa's Got A Brand New Bag...from the Jackie Shane LP from 1967. Toronto singer who dressed in drag and got away with it. Tough to do back in the 60's!! Jackie disappeared for many years, but was found alive a couple of years back living in the southern states. This LP has been re-released recently on the OPM label out of Toronto.
13. James Brown....Night Train...from the Feels Good LP from 1966.
14. The Isley Brothers....Twist And Shout...1962 recording from a greatest hits LP. This is the version The Beatles used for their hit record.
15. Aretha Franklin....Think...from an LP called Star-Collection that has some of her 60's Atlantic sides on it.
16. Gary US Bonds...Star...from the Rhino LP Certified Soul which collects some of Gary's late 60's singles onto one LP. This particular song should have been covered by The New York Dolls not only for it's lyrical content, but it's overall feel. Instead, The Dolls opted to cover 7 Day Weekend, another very cool Gary US Bonds tune!
17. The Temptations....Cloud 9....from the double CD Psychedelic Soul. My fave Temptations release as this collects some phenomenal psych soul!!
18. Sly and The Family Stone....Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again)...from a greatest hits CD. Magazine covered this back in about 1980.
19. Shirley Matthews...Big Town Boy....7" on Tamarack Records from the mid 60's. Remember this one being a hit on CHUM AM back in the day!
20. Mighty Popo....Turaje....from the 2003 CD Ngagara and some nice Afrobeat. Saw this guy at Sunfest many years ago.
21. Fela Kuti....Zombie....from the 1977 Zombie LP.This song takes a whole side of the LP and we ran out of time before getting to the part where the vocals kick in. This is the first LP of Fela's that i picked up and made me a fan for life!!
Thanx for all the phone calls, emails, facebook messages and Heys!!! All greatly appreciated and that's what makes it all worthwhile!!!
Next week, we're doing a special on former CHRW DJ Peter Moore (known onair as Simon Less) and Jan Haust. Both former Londoners and they shared a Grammy Award the other day for their work on Bob Dylan's The Bootleg Series Volume 11: The Basement Tapes Complete. Congrats to both!! Peter lived in London in the late 70's/early 80's and was often seen in the clubs recording bands with his white mannequin head with mics in the ears. He went on to fame recording the first Cowboy Junkies LP. Jan was involved in London record store, Records on Wheels, the first place you could get punk/new wave records here in London. I spent a lot of money and time at that store!!
