    • .Well , of course ,Winter was still playing clubs and venues like House of Blues until not very long ago , but , previously , he was playing on the big festivals , including Woostock.....Like Hendrix , I'll take his pre - fame sides over the more popular stuff , any day. But , I could tell he was more popular on the big concert circuit in Canada by the Late 70's - Early 80's than here. He did'nt really play to the teens , by that time.

But , Inever saw Johnny Winter. I liked his work with Muddy Waters , but , never followed him enough to consider myself a serious fan. Like I say , "Ballad of Bertha Glutz" , "Birds Can't Row Boats" , gimme more.

Yes....I saw Rush , Triumph , Wireless and Max Webster, too , when I was too young to get into the clubs.  Not something I'm proud of , no....MAX WEBSTER, I STILL KINDA LIKE. They were sorta New Wavish . NOT REALLY LIKE RUSH , THO' THEY WORKED TOGETHER A LOT. I have one Goddo LP , AND IT'S JUST  GOOD ROCK'N'ROLL , with enough quirks to set it apart from the Mainstream Rock brigade....

    • Ya John, Johnny Winter was fairly popular around these parts. He was playing the clubs in this area right up until March of this year.

Seems like everyone of a certain age has a Johnny Winter story from one of the many times they saw him. I'm the odd man out and never did see him. Unfortunatly i did see Rush and Triumph many years ago prior to getting immersed in punk/new wave right after that.

But Goddo whom i saw several times were a little different. Rejected by the punk audience in Toronto, yet they had many similarities (high energy and fuck the establishment attitude) and even played on some of the same bills. They were a band that were really good when they first started but got really boring by the time they released their 3rd LP (Act Of Goddo).

    • Johnny Winter was real popular in Canada , was'nt he? I'd sometimes see posters and T-shirts from Rock festivals , and , of course , they'd say , "Rush , Max Webster , Ted Nugent , Aerosmith , Heart , Goddo.....Johnny Winter . ".   In The States , Johnny had been eased out of the big festival circuit by the mid to late 70's , for the most part. "I Want To Be Loved" is a favorite of mine , even though I prefer the original , it's not the one I grew up on (Chess Records catalogue being out of print , then.), and I LIKE THE VERY EARLY Stones' version , too.  a WHILE BACK , I sat in and "Played" it with my friend , Rockin' Johnny , one of few latter day ChicagoBlues artists I can recommend. His Guitar player , Rick , played in Muddy's last band , and his former Drummer , Kenny, is Willie "Big Eyes" Smith's (Muddy's former Drummer.) Son.

    • Radio What Wave Playlist July 24/2014

      1. Dirtbombs....Natural Man....from the If You Don't Already Have A Look double CD on In The Red from 2006.

      2. The Mongrels....All Systems Go....from a Radio What Wave Session 5/2/2013. The Mongrels are playing tonight at the St Regis Hotel, then Sunday August 3rd at the first Rock'n'Roll Rent Party happening at APK from 3 to 7 PM. This is a Radio WW supported event and yours truly will be the MC for the festivities. No cover, it's a pass the hat around to support the band type of event.

      3. Hurricane and Able...Call On You...from their The Last Temptation dowload from last year. This band features Shawn Larouge, who is also in Space Slave who are also playing the first Rock'n'Roll Rent Party.

      4. Hurricane and Able...Little Girl... as above.

      5. Roger Zuraw....We're Rockin'....from the Feels Like Blues To Me CD from 2007. Roger was doing a show in Toronto the night this was originally broadcast.

      6. Frankie and Jimmy....Who Do You Love....from the Scream The Blues LP which is about to be released.

      7. catl....Lamplight The Way....from their This Shakin' House LP.

      8. Lionel Lodge...The Resurection of MV....from his brand new The Agitator CD. Proof there is life in sleepy London Ontario.

      9. Dustbin Flowers...Plasticine Nicotine...from their II CD and more proof of life here.

      10. Dave Campbell....Time Is Now....from his Finding The Real CD. Yet more proof.

      11. The Knaves....London City (or something like that). From a demo a few years ago and the same feelings that i have for this sleepy burg.

      12. Muddy Waters....I Want To Be Loved...from the Hard Again LP from 1976. This is the beginning of our Johnny Winter tribute as he just passed away. Johnny produced, got the talent together, played lead guitar and shouted on this one. And it managed to jump start Muddy's career until his passing.

      13. Johnny Winter...Let It Bleed...from the Still Alive and Well LP from 1973.

      14. Johnny Winter....Master Mechanic....Serious Business LP from 1985.

      15. Blind Willie McTell....Dyin' Crapshooters Blues....from a compliation CD called High Rollers and the 1956 version of this song. Willie claims he wrote this one, history tells us Porter Grainger wrote the tune many years prior and it even appeared on piano roll music for player pianos.

      16. Galileo 7...Tide's Rising....from the False Memory Lane CD.

      17. Flight Reaction...Running Out Of Mind....from their recent self titled CD/LP release. Swedish combo featuring Mans P Mannson of Crimson Shadows/Maggots fame.

      18. Marshmallow Overcoat....Suddenly It's Sunday....from their double LP, The Very Best Of. Singer Tim Gassen is presently finishing up his book, The Knights of Trash which covers the 80's and newer garage band music that we all love. This one is going to be well over 400 pages and counting!

      19. The Glebes....Theme...It's From London 7" EP.

      20. Johnny Terrien and the Bad Lieutenants...Tire Shredding....from the Powerfist CD.

      21. The Pelicans...New Wave....late 70's/early 80's 7" from Brantford Ontario.

      22. Hot House...City Boy....from the Burn It Down LP from 1978. London Ontario combo.

      23. King Salami & The Cumberland 3...Mickey Mouse Party...from a FOLC Records download and quite appropriate for this show.

      24. Downbeat 5....Radiates The Charm...from a double LP on SFTRI Just The Girls Volume 2. Downbeat 5 features x DMZ guitar slinger JJ Rassler and his wife Jenn on vocals on this Boston based combo. Yep, it's the old Arthur Alexander tune done Teenage Head style. Picked this one up at Speed City Records in the $5 bin.

      25. Helen Love....Debbie Loves Joey....as above.

That's a wrap, thanx for all the phone-ins, emails, facebook messages and Heys!!!

Next week we've got a Mongrel or 2 onair to talk about the upcoming Rock'n'Roll Rent Party happening on Sunday August 3rd from 3 to 7PM at APK.

Archived show and playlist are here:

    • YOU ARE so right on all counts. Personally , I never got it with Spencer. Liked him in The Gibson Bros. , but , he was part of a band , not the focal point.... I can't fault him for striking while the iron was hot. I thought his first , pre - godlike status , LP sounded like Gibson's retreads.....Then , he basically took Jeff Evans' thing and made it profitable....

A friend thanked me, about 20 years after the fact , for dragging him out with me to see Pussy Galore , and how it was one of the best shows he'd ever seen. That's funny , because I never SAW that band....

    • Some time , when I have WAY too much time on my hands , I'll have to really peruse that site. It's a laff riot , even if they're not kidding...Tho ' I'd be really surprised if they were.

Of course , a special section for Roky Erickson is in order.

Stand For The Fire Demon , The Wind and More , I Am , I'm a Demon , Bloody Hammer , Burn The Flames , White Faces , Bermuda , The Beast......

While I'm not a particularly religious person , Roky , it goes without saying , is a sweetheart , a gentle soul , and one of the most Christlike people I've ever met.

Neal Ford and The Fanatics - Shame on You (The Texan take on......)

      The Sonics - He's Waitin'.

Rolling Stones - Dancin' With Mr. D .

Rev. Horton Heat - The Devil's Chasing Me , Don't Shake That Devil Thing at Me.

"I KNOW WHAT HAPPENS TO YOU WHEN YOU SING ROCK'N'ROLL. I KNOW THE EEEEEVIL FEELING YOU GET , INSIDE.   IF YOU ASK THE AVERAGE TEENAGER WHAT THEY LIKE ABOUT ROCK'N'ROLL , THEY'LL SAY:

"IT'S THE BEAT ! THE BEAT ! THE BEAT ! THE BEAT !"

Rev. Jimmie Snow , Hank's Son , who unfortunately missed his true calling as a Rockabilly singer.

    • Ooh, good topic. I listen to a lot of metal, but I'm going to exclude that, since there are things like Venom-Welcome to Hell album which is pretty much entirely devoted to Satan/ Hell.

    • Some of our shows have faded away lately so I'm on the lookout to add some new blood to GPPR! Ever wanted to host your own podcast? Now's your chance! Especially interested in shows that have a unique angle to them, like shows that focus on a certain region of the world (Latin America or Australia/New Zealand, for example), focus on a particular era or subgenre of garage/primitive rock'n'roll, or that maybe showcase some of the NEW bands on the scene today (always sorely lacking on a lot of our shows, unfortunately). Would also love to have a Psychotronic/B-movie review show that mixes movie soundbytes with music a la the old Haunted Shack Theatre or Snake Alley podcasts of the past. And, as always, we're always looking for surf music fiends to host episodes of the GaragePunk Surfcast. Just do one or two! It's a great way to get involved and maybe hone your skills for hosting your own show down the road. Interested? Get in touch or reply below. Thanks!

    • ..... I probably could have phrased that to say , it's less likely to fail (A record store of mostly great stuff.) in the states than in Europe , and , probably Canada , too. Of course , we have record stores that lean toward ROCK , but , they have to be chock full of Alt - Rock and Hipster faves to survive at all.....

That does'nt bother me in the least , IF they have something I'm interested in , but , I'm probably not going to make the trip if it isn't likely they'll have something I'd want......

    • I SURE WISH THEM THE BEST....As we established , earlier , in America , all ROCK and no SUCK  is the kiss of death  for an American Record store.

    • I'm hearing your pain Kopper, I dig what your trying to do, I been a member (of sorts) for 8 years,  visit infrequently and never quite get what I wants from here.  I dunno why?

Perhaps I'm shit at navigating music sites, but I have found none of the evolving formats here easy to negotiate.  I don't particularly like 60's garage or old-school punk and my main concern is finding and sharing the music I likes.  Which is Trash, Lo-Fi, grunge & OMB's.

anyways I find sites that use Powered by vBulletin® Version 3.8.7 easy to get around.  Yep I'm a PC spastic. Ha!

I really do appreciate what you've tried to do in the last 10 years but I've got no suggestions because I don't know nuthin about shit

I also think it's easy for people to gravitate towards Spotify and the likes (I don't)  I'm still active with SoulSeek and Last.fm.  but I think they are both dying aswell.  I refuse to do Facebook.

      good luck!!

      Cheers

    • ....I VAGUELY REMEMBER THE JOHN Candy / Lee Ving bonding. What movie was that ? I forget.

vING WAS IN "gET cRAZY" , TOO , AS A CARICATURE OF HIMSELF , i GUESS , "pIGGY" , AND DID A PRETTY ROCKIN' "hOOCHIE cOOCHIE MAN" (By FEAR , WHO WERE'NT IN THE MOVIE.. ).  Otherwise, the movie only eludes to Punk (And has the otherwise extremely rare "Chop Suey " by The Ramones.)....Malcolm MacDowell and Lou Reed are in it , too.

"VALLEY gIRL" CAME OUT PRETTY LATE for The Valley Girl craze , BUT IS STILL A PRETTY FUNNY 80'S TEEN COMEDY , ESPECIALLY FOR HOW BADLY Punk IS DEPICTED.

It starred a still little - known , not yet truly annoying , Nicholas Cage as thE male lead (It was best to watch it on TV, they used to censor one scene where he said "FUCK OFF!" , AND Made it say "SCREW OFF ! OKAY? JUST SCREW OFF !!". who says that?).  E.G. Daily (Pee Wee's Big Adventure) is in it , too.

"COTTON CANDY" IS STILL A CULT FLICK , Never had a proper commercial release , and I doubt it was ever re- run on Television , except maybe by local stations in need of time - filler. I don't know.

    • July 25, 2014 3:18 PM CDT
    • Bingo.  I think other bands (Fugs , Red Crayola , Dolls , Stooges , Blue Cheer , Early Alice Cooper Group , e.g.) were tuned into the same idea , earlier , but The Ramones were totally influenced , and boiled all these disparate ideas down to a single shot.

I interviewed Arthur Lee in '94  , and told him about what Tommy Ramone said , that BANDS LIKE LOVE HAD THE SAME KIND OF ENERGY AS THE RAMONES , They just did it with more volume. Arthur replied "That's one man's opinion , and it's beautiful that he would say that , but , I don't know what the volume had to do with it....Except , in the early days , Love used to do a really heavy version of "You I'll Be Following" , that was probably closer to what he was saying....".    Yeah , it's on my bucket list , too.

      ....CAN'T HEAR EVERYTHING ,THO' .

      oh , and LOVE , Ramones , first (SELF - TITLED)  LPs , 7 SONGS , EACH SIDE , 7 AND 7 IS.
