    • Alot of movies that deal with Punks get it all wrong , but that's what' s so fun about them.

'' Breaking Glass"  stars Hazel O'Connor (Former Girlfriend of Hugh Cornwall of The Stranglers and recording artist in her own right.) as a Punk singer whose band takes off , but , when fame happens too quickly ,she loses sight of her ideals , and becomes very Ziggy Stardust - like. Cries of "Sellout !" abound. I first saw it on a double bill with "Rude Boy"in '80 or early '81 ....You've probably seen the latter, but , if not , it deals directly The Clash trying to figure out how not to become absorbed by rising fame and , well , cries of "Sellout !".

"Jubilee" - I have a copy , but it'll only play on my computer , and I watch movies on TV , as God intended.

"Return of The Living Dead" - One of the funnier movies , post - Repo Man , to deal with Punk and get it all wrong , though about half of the soundtrack is great.

''Valley Girl" - REALLY misses the boat with Punk , esp. for L.A., BUT IT'S A FUN TEEN FILM.

The Plimsouls and Josie Cotton mime to a couple of their own songs.

"Neighbors" - Deals with Punk , in passing. John Belushi's innocent , cherubic Daughter comes home all punked out , two tone hair , black leather , a stash of edible panties and "Holiday in Cambodia" blasting on her boom box.

"Cotton Candy" - Not a Punk film , but recommended.  Ron Howard's considerably tame answer to "Rock'n'Roll High School". The music is real nerdy , performed by Charles Martin Smith , who worked opposite Howard in "American Grafitti" (As "Toad"), and stars as an idealistic teen (Who was already about 25 at the time , and looked older , still ...shades of "Happy Days"who goes head to head with the "Bad Guy Band" , who own his High School. The Bad Guy band is played by future members of Dallas Punk/Psych legends , Quad Pi.). Clint Howard ( Rock'n'Roll High School.) co - stars , making it Punk by default. He publically knocked his Brother's choice of music , saying "The Ramones were my kind of people !).

TV - You may know all of these examples , but.....

"Quincy" , "CHIPs" , "CPO SHARKEY" (Don Rickles goes to a Punk club and meets The Dickies. Kid Congo and other LA PUNKSTERS ARe EXTRAS.) , "Sugar Time" (Very SHORT LIVED SERIES. BARBI BENTON AND HER GIRLFRIENDS TRY TO MAKE THE BIG TIME AS A SINGING GROUP. In one episode , they "Go Punk", WEARING GARBAGE BAGS FOR DRESSES , singing "GARBAGE! GARBAGE ! WE WANT TRASH!".....

WKRP in Cincinatti - You've got to remember the episode where the station hires a band from England , The Scum of The Earth , who turn out to be more Power Pop than Punk (Or more like REO Speedwagon...it's been a while.), to do a concert , then find out they like to beat up on members of the audience.

They Young Ones - OK , VYVIAN was not a Punk , despite his being labelled as such. He was more like a latter - day EngliSh Rocker. Not the previous generations' bikes and black leather and 50's R'N'R variety (Hilariously misrepresented in "Quadrophenia" as VERY long haired and bearded, because those were the only extras they could find who could ride !), but people who liked both Metal and Punk , BEFORE IT WAS FASHIONABLE , but leaned more toward Metal. I knew guys like this , from England , and they called themselves Rockers.

      Square Pegs - It's not Punk ! It's New Wave ! It's a totally different head !

Johnny Slash , our fearless leader , was the first TV counter cultural icon of his time , even if he appeared to be a poseur (Like Maynard G. Krebs , THEE first counter cultral icon on TV , period .).   Slash , at least , was an EX - pUNK rOCKER.

    • In the past month I've re-watched Suburbia and Class of 1984. These have kind of put me in the mood to watch similar stuff. Any suggestions?

I really want to see “We Are the Best!” which just recently came out.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWWNd-eybN0

Fabulous Stains, Times Square, Repo Man type movies is kind of what I’m interested in. Not punk documentaries per se.

    • Hmmmm.... Haven't heard Stars (Syd Barrett , Twink ,ca. 1972.)

The Plastic Dipshit Band (Thrown together band that subbed for a no -show group at The Cincinatti Pop Festival , with Cub Koda , Suzi and Michael Quatro , and I think Nancy and Patti Quatro and others. 1971? Not the festival that was on TV.).

Noel Redding Band (With Eric Bell - ex Thin Lizzy , Them.) Saw it the other day , though.  Obviously , I could look it up on You Tube or Something.

Gene Vincent backed by The Alice Cooper Group . Toronto Rock'n'Roll Revival , 1969.

      Gene Vincent with Billy Zoom on Guitar , L.A. , circa 1970 - 71.

Elvis and Tom Jones on the same fucking stage (There is at least one picture.).

Howdy Folks... I think the part I really like about this community is that we have a pretty focused taste in music, surely based around garage punk. But damn, I've been listening to '66 garage since I was a kid. And I've been around the block and thought I heard it all. SO, in this day and age i am still digging in record bins looking for eras of lost styles from Surf to Blues to Country to Swing to Psych to Punk to Trash to whatever...( i could keep going on here ) My point being, Is there any cool undiscovered stuff?? Have we heard it all?? Weird African Tribe records or Russian Folk music has been turning me on so much lately because I NEVER HEARD IT BEFORE!! I would love to turn you on with my records via Sonic Nightmares radio show here at GaragePunk.com so if you think you might have something tasty, i dunno, some cajun hillbilly soul music or something, post it here in this discussion so we all can take a leap into some muddier waters. We all deserve it, so put on your thinking caps and let's blow each others minds... and hopefully stop talking about the new Guns N Roses release... with glove Brother Panti-Christ

    • Yep, it's been confirmed. Kinda thought he'd be around a bit longer. Bummer. R.I.P.

    • July 12, 2014 12:59 AM CDT
    • Apparently , reports that came in today , about Tommy Ramone (nee Erdelyi.) dying from complications related to Bile Duct Cancer. By the time you read this , there should be confirmation. Sadly , I'm inclined to believe he did pass away , yesterday. The initial report was by "Rock Critic before such a title rendered you suspect " , Richard Meltzer. The report that HIS report was a hoax was housed in 70's teen exploitation mag trappings , "Is Tommy Ramone the sexiest man in Rock'n'Roll ?" , or whatever.

After playing in a Garage Rock covers band with Johnny Cummmings /Ramone , Tommy instigated the formation of The Ramones , and with his passing , all four members of the classic lineup have embodied the cliche you see on the covers of magazines at the grocery store: "Gone too soon".    The Ramones began life as a five - piece with Richie Ramone I (Who would later leave the band , apparently because his being gay was an issue with his bandmates , no doubt , most specifically , Johnny.), Dee Dee , Johnny , Tommy , and Joey , who , like Iggy Pop before him , started out as a Drummer, but , proved to be a born frontman. Of course , another Richie Ramone would late rusher in a very interesting , but short lived , creative resurgence for the band. Richie I would go on to comparatively minor success with The Nuns.

As the band began to branch out a bit , musically , Tommy's steady , though limited , drum patterns, remained the same. He was not a trained musician , though he'd already worked in Engineering at The Record Plant , where he worked on Jimi Hendrix's "Electric Ladyland" and others. He did find time from his busy schedule to give Miriam Linna , about to join the mk2 Cramps lineup , her first drum lesson. Eventually , Tommy left the band , citing the stresses of touring as a deciding factor. He would , of course , turn up as Producer with The Ramones , The Continentals , The Replacements , and others.

Tommy did'nt seem to regret anything , and , he , in turn , did'nt seem to be resented for leaving the band.

In recent years , he formed a Hippie Bluegrass Duo , Uncle Monk , sang "Blitzkrieg Bop" with The Dictators at teh closing of CBGBs ,  and finally ,  got to present Joey's Brother, Mickey / Mitch , and their Mom , Charlotte ,  with Joey's posthumous Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame Induction Award , after they were not asked to join (Most of) the surviving ex - bandmembers at the podium.

If you guessed Johnny , you guessed correct.

More unusual , perhaps , is the fact that Tommy , an immigrant from war - ravaged Hungary , only recently announced that he was Jewish , stating that he did'nt think anyone would have cared , either way. It turned out that most of his family was killed in The Holocaust.

It's probable that he knew you - know - who would have had a field day , had he known there were TWO Jewish Brothers in the band. Anti - Semitism ran rampant in New York at the time , even The Dictators (Successfully) passed for Italians to avoid unecessary confrontation. That is , until Richard Blum , the embodiment of the "Tough Jew" , became the focal point of the band.  But , Tommy did'nt seem to mind , either way , what people thought of him , or his background.  And if he is  , sadly , where I think he is ,  none of that matters anymore.

      Goodbye , and thank you , Tommy , if I'm right , though , I hope I'm wrong.

    • Nothing comes to my mind as current. Fe Fi Fo Fums seems to be the last sort of modern band of that genre I can think of. I do miss it!

    • July 11, 2014 12:48 AM CDT
    • Is "budget rock" still a thing? Not exactly talking about the annual Budget Rock Fest that still(?) happens every year in SF... I mean the GENRE. Are there any current budget rock bands, scenes, or labels anywhere? I'm talkin' about bands like the Mummies, Supercharger, the Rip Offs, Teengenerate, the Trashwomen, Phantom Surfers, the Statics, etc. It seems like this fun, lo-fi, noisy, trashy, and inept subgenre of garage that was pretty big for a while in the early-to-mid '90s has completely dried up and blown away... ever since Jesse Lortz's label BOOM BOOM RECORDS OF RENTON disappeared offa the map.

So are there any bands like this still around? Labels? 'zines? ANYTHING besides that festival? If so, name 'em. Post videos. Feed me BUDGET ROCK. It's what I crave.

I'm also not familiar with most of those bands. Thanks for reading it! We need more guys that can listen!

    • Radio What Wave Playlist July 10/2014: Rob Munro Memorial

Rob Munro was a former London Ontario musician and was currently a musician in Hamilton Ontario. Some of his former London Ontario bands included; Frankenstein 5, The Groove Things, The Mood, Scratching Post and The Mogs. His Hamilton bands included: The Noble Savages and The Mogs. He was a constant listener of Radio WW, sometimes phone caller and was even on live many years ago. Rob passed away earlier this week.

Rob Munro played on all of the songs on this show.

      1. Frankenstein 5....It's A Cryin' Shame....CHRW London Underground II CD, a compilation of London Ontario bands, from the mid 90's.

      2. Frankenstein 5....We're Pretty Quick....a live to air broadcast on 94.7 CHRW from the early 90's. This was recorded from the radio onto cassette, hence some of the static that's on a coupla tunes. This is the only copy of this live to air we could find. The band played for about an hour straight with almost no breaks at all between songs!! Youth, beer and energy at it's finest!

      3. Frankenstein 5...Kill And Go Hide... as above.

      4. Frankenstein 5....99th Floor...as above.

      5. Frankenstein 5....Girl You Captivate Me... as above.

      6. Frankenstein 5...Going All The Way... as above.

      7. Frankenstein 5....That's The Bag I'm In... as above.

      8. Frankenstein 5...Kill And Go Hide... from Baloney Sandwich, the cassette that came with What Wave 19 in 1990. The F5 were big faves around WW HQ's.

      9. Frankenstein 5....Go Away....from London Crawling, the cassette that caame with What Wave 22 from 1996.

      10. Frankenstein 5....Nothin'... Recorded live at The Brunswick Hotel, London Ontario 8/11/1989

      11. Frankenstein 5....99th Floor... as above. As always, lots of chatter and drinking between tunes when the band played out live. Had to play this as the previous cassette got stuck in the machine and there was cassette tape spewing out on the floor. Rob would have loved this as accidents and mishaps seemed to be his constant companions.

      12. The Groove Things....Not The Hurting Kind...recorded live at Notes, London, Ontario 6/5/1991. This was Rob's band as he sang and wrote many of the songs. Nicole Hughes played guitar and the 2 of them went onto Scratching Post, with Rob leaving shortly after the band started playing live.

      13. The Groove Things... The Witch... as above.

      14. The Groove Things....It's Over....from the Eighh Wonder, the cassette that came with What Wave 20 from 1991. This is from a soundboard live recording.

      15. The Mood....Warsaw....from Cat'O'Nine Tails, the cassette that came with What Wave 21 from 1992.

      16. The Mogs.... Bored....recorded in the mid 90's after Frankenstein 5 split up for good. This was Rob's solo project and he was assisted here by former F5 members Jason Kipfer and Mark Ordas as well as Christopher Steven Brown.

      17. The Mogs...Fear The Fear.... as above.

      18. The Mogs...Gravy Train... as above.

      19. The Mogs....Hate.. as above.

      20. The Mogs...Love... as above.

      21. The Mogs...See The Mornin'... as above.

      22. The Mogs...Smile... as above.

      23. The Mogs...Vancouver... as above.

      24. The Mogs....Hate....from the El'Mogamundo! CD that came out earlier this year on What Wave Records. This was to be Rob's final recordings and also featured Alyssa Broere on bass, guitar and vocals and Derek Smith on drums and guitars. This lineup of the band was based in Hamilton/Burlington and played out several times. Derek left this spring and Rob and Alyssa carried on playing live as a 2 piece while the search was on for a replacement drummer.

      25. The Mogs...Run Like Hell.. as above.

      26. The Mogs...Swamp Love... as above.

Hope you enjoyed Rob's music and maybe it opened a few ears to some cool tunes! Rob would have loved being featured on Radio What Wave and it would have put a permanent grin on his face!!

Thanx for all the phone-ins, emails, facebook messages and Heys!! This was obviously a difficult show to do but i was quite amazed at the amount of music that Rob put out!! RIP buddy!!!
