Such sad news...
There will be a definite memorial Stooges marathon playing in my house all day.
BY THE TIME YOU READ THIS , THERE WILL PROBABLY BE A LOT MORE INFO AVAILABLE.....
Scott Asheton , aka "Rock Action" , had been in failing health for over a year , forcing him to go on sabbatical from The Stooges. He did appear at a concert shown on the internet several months to a year ago , but , I don't know if he played any other gigs with the band , after that.
Besides burnin' to ya with the Big Bad Beat STRAIGHT FROM Hell in every incarnation of The Stooges (Barring his , intended as temporary , replacement by Larry Mullens - whose picture appeared in two internet obits. How hard was it to find a photo of the actual deceased?!) , Scotts Asheton also played in heavy hitters , The Sonics Rendezvous Band , Dark Carnival , Scot's Pirates/Scott Morgan Band (Basically SRB minus Fred "Sonic" Smith.) and projects involving Sonny Vincent , and others. I almost had a chance to meet him , once , bu t, I admit , I froze when he got in my range. ROCK FUCKIN' ACTION !!!!! BAAAAAAAD MOTHERFUCKER !!!!!
It's evident!
The band I'm in, The False Poets, would love to be included in Hideout Comp!
It's very sad....Gary was a great person. He really appreciated the sudden interest in the band - But , it was'nt sudden at all , as a low-key movement was happening in the 80's and 90's , via 10TH generation "Beat ! Beat! Beat!" videos exchanging hands in the tape trade , bootlegs of "black monk time" reportedly dating as far back as the Late 70's , and Wendy Wild and Deb O'Nair's all - female monks ' tribute band , Das Furlines. Also "Complication" appeaed on the fine Garage /Psych "Turds on a Bum Ride" , before the first high profile unauthorized CD version of the monks' album on Repertoirre in Germany.
Aw, Bollocks. I really hoped to see them.
This is very sad news.

Wow. I wonder if Bob Gruen shot this , but , I've never heard of any color Gruen footage turning up on The Dolls. IF YOU HAVE THAT "ALL DOLLED UP" DVD , it's kind of anticlimactic seeing the '75 footage after the earlier stuff , BUT , they seemed like they were working hard to reclaim what was theirs.
Personal problems , and Malcolm MacLaren's genius move to re - invent the band as faux - Maoist Rockers , centuries before that did'nt mean career suicide , made it all too clear the commercial success that had eluded them would never be theirs.
Still , they were working on some good material. A Third NYD album could have been a lot more on the PowerPop tip , I ALWAYS THOUGHT , but , might have been a lot better than anyone had a right to expect.
The "Red Patent Leather" look makes more sense on color film (Or video? Who even had a video camera in 1975 BESIDES gRUEN AND THE THREE MAJOR NETWORKS ? ha ha.). People say The Romantics lifted from The Dolls' unsuccessful later group image , but , for once , Jagger looked more like Johansen (1978 "Some Girls " tour.) than the other way around. I dunno. You do get a feel for how exciting it must have been to see The Dolls in a small club , even though they deserved so much better.

I JUST GOT THE WORD , several hours ago , that Gary Burger from the monks passed away this morning from complications relate to Pancreatic Cancer.
He was 72 , I believe . I WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO HAVE KNOWN GARY IN THE CAPACITY THAT I DID.....We first met , as did he and many of his fans , at the monks' first reunion performance , and very first US appearance , at The 1999 Cavestomp. My Editor at Roctober , Jake Austen , was invited to the monks' first social reunion at Gary's home in Bemedji , Minnesota , about three years earlier. I GOT TO KNOW GARY A LITTLE BETTER THROUGH MY CONNECTION TO THE MAGAZINE , And I called him on the phone ever several months , at least. I'm sure many people knew him better than I did , but , he was always kindly and easy - going , and it was as much fun hearing him talk about the early days as speculate on what the future may hold. After the NYC show , I saw the monks at The Vegas Rockaround Festival in 2004 , and Gary came to Chicago to give a blowout solo performance , backed by tHE GOBLINS (WHOSE "GOBLIN PRIDE" CD GARY PRODUCED.) , Jake Austen's band . Gary kept busy as a Producer. Not long ago , I introduced him to Bill Bulinski of The Electras (''Action Woman") , who recorded a side project with Burger. Gary also released a split single , a few years back , and he did two performances of "Black Monk Time ", about a year ago , with local musicians . HE'S PRESENTLY INCLUDED ON THE FUZZTONES' Tribute "In Fuzz We Trust" performing "Hurt on Hold" with a "black monk time" arrangement.
I was'nt aware he'd been ill. I just spoke to him a few weeks ago , and a few months before then. He seemed in good spirits , and ,in a reflective mood. Not as if he were trying to tell me his time was almost up without having to say it , but , just as an older man who got to live these fantastic experiences most people could'nt even have made up. He really loved his fans , his friends , his music and his life. It's we who have to let go , now. Way Down.......To Heaven.
John Battles 3/14/14.
it's OK. i USED TO ALWAYS READ CONFLICTING DATES OF tHE BEATLES' ACTUAL FORMATION ,AS THEY CAME FROM VARIOUS OTHER BANDS....
'61 was really the year of The Twist. I forget if Chubby Checker's big hit version was in '60 or '61 , but Hank Ballard released it about a year earlier. The Twist became the biggest thing in the very early 60's besides the teen idol craze (yecch!). Some good Rock'n'Roll records were made in teh name of teh Twist fad.
Oops, sorry! John is right about the Beatles and the Stones.
BTW, the Wiki has these pages.
'Little Sister" b/w "Marie's The Name (Of His Latest Flame)" , the perfect Rock'n'Roll record , did come out in 1961. The Stones ARE THOUGHT OF AS HAVING FORMED in 1963 , though their original incarnation , as Little Boy Blue and The Blue Boys , with Dick Taylor of The Pretty Things on Bass , were together as early as 1962. The Beatles , I think , formed as The Silver Beatles , with Stu Sutcliffe , in 1960 , but , I may be mistaken.
In The UK , Mods were making their presence known (It's believed Mod went back as far as The Late 50's.) , and Teds , no doubt alienated by The Rock'n'Roll of the day (As were Rockers) distanced themselves from current trends.
Elvis performed just two shows , in Memphis and Honolulu in 1961. THE ONE EXISTING RECORDING , THE LATTER GIG , PROVED AN ALL - AROUND TRIUMPH.HE WOULD'NT PERFORM A LIVE CONCERT (BARRING THE 68 COMEBACK TV SPECIAL) AGAIN , UNTIL 1969.
Hi. I think the Beatles and the Stones were formed in 1961. Elvis released "Little Sister".
Fellow Hideouters,
I need some tips on cultures/subcultures circa 1961. Music? Film? Scenes? Hidden gems of any kind? I greatly appreciate any input.
Thank ya much!
I love 'em too.

Radio What Wave Playlist Mar 13/2014 Part 3 Psychos and Other Unusual Canadians.
Our third and final installment of this special. Hope you enjoyed listening to some of these bands that seldom get airplay, maybe brought back some memories or even introduced you to some obscure Canadian combo you didn't know existed. And thanx for all the phone-ins during these 3 parts, it's been overwhelming!!
1. Tommy Ambrose....End Of The World...late 50's rockabilly from a cassette that Dave Clarke made for us many years ago.
2. Ratwurst....Stupid People...from their self titled CD. This was 2 of the members of Drums Along The Gardiner (80's garage combo from Toronto) who got together for this strange little project in the mid 90's.
3. Jack Pedlar...Effigy Camp...from the DT Delinquent CD. 2003 CD from Hamilton's Jack Pedlar, probably best known as the drummer for Teenage Head. Regular listener Gary Pig Gold was involved in this project.
4.King Khan....I Wanna Be A Girl....from the Supreme Genius Of King Khan CD. Now based in Germany, this guy and band pack it in worldwide. When they played sleepy London Ontario several years back, the band onstage outnumbered the crowd. And they still put on a killer show!!
5. Flying Squad...Come And Play....mid 80's demo from this London Ontario combo. London's only biker rock combo and they boasted the vocal talents of Tim Murphy. One of the best vocalists to come out of London, as long as you didn't have to watch his facial antics! They were loved or hated, no inbetween with this combo.
6. Flying Squad...Health Food...from Mr Garager's Neighbourhood LP on OG Records. We've played this song many times on Radio WW and will continue to do so.
7. Flying Squad....Brian Mulroney....early 90's demo w/Kerry Piper now on vocals. This is a love song for a former Prime Minister of Canada.
8. Jim Ashby....Speed City....from a 7" on Speed City Records. Originally issued when Jim was a DJ on one of London's AM radio stations, during London's reign as speed capitol of Canada....now we're known as the serial killer capitol of the world!! What a fucked up city we live in!!! Getting back on topic, this is my favourite record to ever come out of sleepy London Ontario!!!
9. Chris Houston....Einstein's Brain's In Hamilton...2013 7" from this topical singer songwriter. Former member of Forgotten Rebels and writer of Surfin' On Heroin, this guy has one screwed up (but honest) take on this fucked up world we live in. And if true, this song explains why Hamilton is much cooler than sleepy London Ontario.
10.The Weirdies....Frankenstein's Daughter...from the In 3D CD. Toronto trio from a couple of years ago and their drummer, Stacey Case is now in The Noble Savages who you'll be hearing on next week's show.
11. The Government....It Must Be God....an excerpt from Electric Eye LP, from 1979. Toronto trio who should have gone on to big things, but are largely forgotten and were not even mentioned in Treat Me Like Dirt, the story of the Toronto punk scene. One of my fave Toronto combos from that era, they never did play London and i didn't get to see them until late 1981 and by that time, were a shadow of their former selves. This LP supposedly went along with a video....can anyone help me locate this??
12. The Government....Flat Tire....from a 7" EP from 1979. Bought this as soon as i heard it on the old 6X radio station...the first radio station to acknowledge punk rock here in sleepy London and bless them for introducing me to so many bands!
13. The Government...Hemingway Hated Disco Music....first 7" by this combo and took me several years to find.
14. The Leather Uppers....She Digs Death...from a 7" from 1992. Toronto duo, their first ever out of town show was right here in sleepy London Ontario. They were supposed to have a 2 night gig at the Brunswick, but were fired after the first night. They were way ahead of their time and sleepy London didn't get it! So what else is new? I just happen to have been in attendance for part of the show and have a live audio tape to prove it.....someday i might play it on air.
15. Deja Voodoo...Pyramid....live on CBC radio and features the soothing voice of David Wisdom (Brave New Waves, Nightlines and other highly influential radio shows) introducing the band.
16.Deja Voodoo...Monsters In My Garage....from the OG LP, Live At The Backstage Pass...recorded live in Finland by this Montreal duo. Deja Voodoo were fairly popular on the Canadian college radio scene in the mid to late 80's. Their record label, OG Records had the best of the Canadian underground bands on it during this time period! Their It Came From Canada series of LP's are essential listening for fans of Canadian music from that era.And big thanx to Bloodshot Bill for playing this song at Call The Office the other night and dedicating it to me!!
17. Deja Voodoo....Call Link Wray...from their 1988 LP, Big Pile Of Mud. When all else fails, call Link Wray!!! There was some psycho that used to yell out Link Wray really loudly when bands were playing here in London! Think he hosts a radio show on CHRW now....
18. Deja Voodoo...Some Things Just Don't Wash Off....as above.
19.Dik Van Dykes....Green Slime....from the Nobody Likes....LP on OG Records. Hamilton combo who were highly entertaining live! And they summarize this show to a T!
20. Dik Van Dykes...Lost In Space....fromthe Waste Mor Vinyl LP on OG Records...they only released 2 LP's and a cassette, all worth searching for.
21. Dik Van Dykes...Obvious Filler...from the Nobody Likes LP....perfect title for this song.
22. The Evaporators....EvatonesSoundsheets....from the Gassy Jack and Other Tales LP. This is Narduar the Human Serviettes combo. He still has a radio show in Vancouver and still does lots and lots of hilarious, yet intelligent interviews with famous people. He's a Canadian Icon!!
Thanx for all the emails, phone calls, facebook messages and Heys!!! And thanx for tuning in to the madness each week! Back again next week with lots of new music and who knows what else.

If you don't know Fred Cole , or don't want to know about him , please ignore this. As most of you know , Fred is one of the five or six , if there's still even that many , true Founding Fathers and Elder Statesmen of Garage Punk , Garage Rock ,whatever the Hell you want to call it. He was through with it before we ALL knew what to DO with it. From Northwest Psych /Punk Legends , The Lollipop Shoppe (aka The Weeds.) , to lo- fi Hard Rockers , Kingbee and Zipper , to Punk /New Wave Rockers , The Rats , and then , of course , Dead Moon......a name still spoken of in almost gasping tones. Cole raised the bar , well into his Fifties , and carried on , doing the same , with Pierced Arrows , in his Sixties.
Fred will soon be undergoing open heart , bypass surgery , if it has'nt begun , already. He was diagnosed with 85 - 100 % blockage to his arteries.
It is estimated a six month recovery period will be required before he will be able to perform again. The reformed Dead Moon , Pierced Arrows , and Fred's acoustic project with his Wife of 45 years , Toody ( also of Dead Moon , Pierced Arrows and The Rats.), are being put on ice , though not indefinitely.
It's my belief Fred will be back , with a vengeance. PLEASE try to be of the same belief , and do whatever it is you choose to do , pray , think good thoughts , and direct your strength to someone who has plenty of his own , but can always use your support.
Besides being the embodiment of the DIY spirit (How many unlistenable below - fi bands , that recorded on an answering machine in the bog , ever lived in The Yukon for five years ?) , Fred Cole is , above all , a good soul , a gentleman , dignified , though VERY funny , he loves his Wife , and his fans , dearly. We owe him one.
Have his back , in any way you see fit. Your care and concern does not go unappreciated. John Battles.
