Great topic btw! Just this weekend I started my solo guitar vox and kick drum career. The whole time there was a bit of a rattle/vibration I felt would be cooler if a tambourine was in the mix somewhere.

I'm not an expert or anything, and I'm not familiar with those guys you mentioned, but the first thing that comes to mind is the "tambourine in there somewhere." My drummer puts a tambo on top of his hi-hat sometimes. 

I think you're talking about a basic, stand-up rockabilly drum setup, no? Anyway, the basic recording technique is the same for any kind of kit. You put two mics on overhead boom stands, equidistant from the center of the kick, maybe a foot or so to either side of the kit, and about 6 or 7 feet high. Record these on separate tracks, and later, mix them with a spread, anywhere from 30/30 out, depending on what other instrumentation you have, and the sound you're after. The spread gives a sense of movement, or stereo.

Mic the snare and kick, and bring up these tracks in the mix to round out the drum sound. You can mic the top and bottom of the snare, and blend the two tracks for the sound you want. If you're just using one mic on the snare, mic the top. You'll get some bleed from the other drums in these mics, but it'll be mostly the drum you mic. Mic the kick from the front, not the back where the pedal is. My drummer's kick has a hole in the front head, about 6", I put the mic a few inches in front of that.

What kind of mics to use could fill up many pages of another thread, but use what you have, even stage mics can give a decent sound. Experiment with placement of the mics, it can make a big difference, as can the acoustics of the room you're in. In the mix, you'll probably want to EQ a lot of it, especially the kick. Keep the levels out of the red! You can always bring them up in the mix, but it's impossible to undo oversaturation. 

Of course, there are other ways of doing it, but this is a common technique, and I could go on a lot more about finer points. The are lots of how-to vids on Youtube.

I'm looking towards setting up a basic one man drum setup for recording at home, similar to Ty Seagal, Dead Elvis and His One Man Grave, Mark Sultan etc

I'm basically think a snare and bass drum, both with individual foot pedals but I'm wondering if anyone has any idea how BBQ gets his sound, because it sounds like he's got a tamborine in there somewhere, I've seen him once before but it was a few years back and I can't seem to find close up pictures on the internet. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions for one band drumming or ideas on recording drums for someone who isn't a drummer I'm welcomed to hear anything.

Yeah, that version of "Tough Lover" definitely sounds like it could have been recorded in the 50's. Here's another song in the same vein also sounding really authentic by Ray Collins Hot Club whom I got to see live just a month ago at the Hultsfreed Hayride weekender.

Not "beat," per se, but I'd have to say the most authentic band I've heard the past couple of years is Nick Curran and the Lowlifes, hands down.

Download some drum samples or loops off the net and have fun building beats. For garagey stuff, it don't take much! I've wasted more time waiting for drummers to show up than I care to admit. Steve's surf drum samples worked perfect for my type of sour mash garage tunes.

to the drumming question, a small cardboard box of old bolts and a suitcase sounds pretty cool with reverb!

They didn't use pedals, but a lot of garage bands used Reverb in the 60's..natural hall reverbs ( I know Link Wray recorded songs this way ) and Spring Reverb Units. I recently bought a Vibro Champ XD ( Tube Hybrid amp ) and I swear by it..I can get very decent overdriven tones on the tweed setting and the blackface clean settings are damn close..I've owned a Pro, Super and Twin Reverbs and it's %95 there. Most solid state/hybrid amps are rubbish, but I have found the Vox Pathfinder 15R & Vibro Champ XD to be solid amps for practise & recording basic demos.

I am not a believer in distortion pedals - too friggin' metal and rawk. Overdrive your amp - that's the only distortion you need. Or loosen a tube like Link Wray. Slash your speaker cone with a razor blade (that's how Dave Davies did it and I swear by it but I have several amps) and it's not that expensive to put in a new cone.  Get an amp with tremolo or, most importantly, REVERB! DON'T GET A REVERB PEDAL!! Nothing sounds worse... A tremolo unit is ok if you can't get an amp with both but reverb pedals are the seed of Stan's nutsack. Cheap guitars aren't really necessary but they will work well. My main guitar these days is a Kent Americana.

 

Listen to records you like and learn the songs and then STEAL THEM! You'll learn everything you need to know. Lessons, books, etc are overrated and a waste of money.

Radio What Wave Playlist.....Aug 16/2012

For this particular show, we started one hour early, 5PM and played London Ontario combos from the late 70's up to about 1990. The reason, we're doing a big show on Oct 26th, called Underground Graphics London 1977 to 1990 which will be a visual display of the posters, zines, artwork etc from that era. This visual display will be at Forest City Gallery here in London. And for opening night, we've got a big bash planned featuring 4 local bands from the above era reuniting for the night; The Enemas, NFG, The Zellots and Uranus. It'll be an action packed night of rock'n'roll!  And if that isn't enough, we're bringing back our zine, What Wave for an all local issue that will be released at the opening of the show. We're also releasing a 90m cassette of almost all unreleased tunes from local bands from the 1977 to 1990 era. Some of those tunes may have been played in part 1 of the show.

He was killed in a botched robbery several years after retiring the act.

22. Janice K....Hard Headed Woman...from a 1987 home demo. Janice K is from Nebraska and is one of the few female Elvis acts. She has the chops to back it up, as she saw Elvis live many times and was even a guest at one of the King's many parties. Janice K has been featured on many of the mainstream talk shows (Oprah, Inside Edition etc) the mainstream press (People magazine) and even several What Wave cassettes!

I'm really big on walking around with my phone blasting music out of its little bitty Tart 'n' Tiny sized speaker. Under normal circumstances, i just let it play on Shuffle. However, if the weather or atmosphere suggests something specific, i play that instead...for instance, "Talk Talk Talk" by the PSYCHEDELIC FURS is good if you're walking by the river at night, but not as good if you're walking to get ice cream at Noon. 20/20 is good if it's damp out; "Where It's At With The Wind" works well in late afternoon. The DREAM SYNDICATE are good if it's Fall, and MICK FARREN & THE DEVIANTS "Screwed Up" is particularly excellent if you are by the river and it's dark AND you're all fucked up. Otherwise, as i said, shuffle play.

Velvets are okay for me, but not 'on the road'...hate Pere Ubu (hehe...), love THE RAMONES, THEE HEADCOATS and Phil's Girl Groups seem to be okay, too...as you mentioned, it depends on one'S mood a lot, of course...
