      17. The Ugly Ducklings....Nothin'....from their first 7" from 1966. This is the beginning of our Ugly Ducklings special, as Dave Bingham (lead singer/harp for the entire run of the band) has written and just released a book, Noise From The North End, The Amazing Story of The Ugly Ducklings. It's well over 500 pages and packs in tons of stories about the band, the times, recording, playing live and living the life of an Ugly Duckling. 1. The Mongrels....All Systems Go....demo from 2013 that's been re-mastered and they might be playing somewhere this weekend. Thought i saw a poster, but can't find it now.

      2. Stone Soul....Fire In My Veins....brand new demo from the combo formerly known as Vintage Experience. Our pal Ryan In The Red (used to do In The Red on CHRW and now does the Rock City Madness podcast) plays guitar and sings in this band.

      3. Split Squad....Now Hear This....brand new and features members of The Plimsouls, Fleshtones and drummer for just about everyone, Clem Burke!!!

      4.  Flamin' Groovies....Shake Some Action....live recording from NPR Radio 1/6/2016. There's 3 or 4 other songs they recorded as well and sound just as good!

      5. Rolling Stones....Diddly Daddy....very first recordings from 1963. This is the beginning of our Georgio Gomelsky special as he passed away very recently. Georgio started the Crawdaddy Club which is where the Rolling Stones first played and got their most known lineup together. When they first started, Georgio had to bribe people with free meals to get them out to see the Stones. After a short time, the Stones were selling the place out and were too big to play here. He also managed the band prior to Andrew Loog Oldham taking over the reins.

      6. Rolling Stones...Roadrunner....as above, both songs are on a bootleg called Bright Lights Big City.

      7. The Yardbirds....Smokestack Lightning.....recorded live at The Crawdaddy Club 1963. The Yardbirds took over residency of The Crawdaddy Club and Georgio Gomelsky proceeded to manage them and produce their albums. He also gave Eric Clapton the Slowhand nickname that has stuck with him for life!

      8. The Animals....Boom Boom....1964 Decca Audition Recordings. Georgio Gomelsky invited The Animals down to London to play his club and arranged for The Yardbirds to play Newcastle, which was the home of The Animals, getting both bands much needed exposure.

      9. Steampacket...Can I Get A Witness....from the Steampacket LP. UK supergroup arranged by Long John Baldry that featured Brian Auger, Julie Driscoll, a very young Rod Stewart and others, produced by Georgio Gomelsky.

      10. Julie Driscoll....Tramp....from the Open LP that also featured Brian Auger and was on Georgio Gomelsky's label, Marmalade Records and of course, he produced it. From here, he started to work with more progressive, experimental and jazz oriented combos that aren't really in the vein of this show. Once a band became popular and started to attract a lot of attention Georgio Gomelsky lost interest as he was more into the small club type of band. He later moved to NYC which is where he resided until passing and worked with many upcoming bands. His eccentricities often worked against him.

      11. Mott The Hoople.....All The Young Dudes....from All The Young Dudes from 1972. This goes out to Buffin, (Dale Griffin) longtime and original drummer for Mott who passed away earlier this week. And we'll also send it out to Bowie as he wrote this song for Mott and it saved their career!

      12. Mott The Hoople....All The Way From Memphis....from Mott 1973. Mott The Hoople also featured vocalist Ian Hunter who went on to a successful solo career after his Mott days.

      13. Ralph...I'll Remember....from the Sophisticated Boom Boom CD 1997. Ralph is a long time music industry guy that's done just about everything (except have a hit record) and presently has an art/music gallery in Montreal called BBAM Gallery that host cool events.

      14. Little Games....Muswell Hill Ray....from the Guitar Damage CD and obviously dedicated to Ray Davies from The Kinks. Vancouver based 60's influenced combo that features Tom Harrison on vocals, who coincidentally sang on the previous song.

      15. The Hypnotics....Isn't It Fun....from the Modern Art Entertainment CD. Windsor based combo who are about to release this on vinyl very soon. And you can hear bassist David Konstantino on CJAM (Windsor Ontario University Radio) every Saturday night at 7PM with his Revolution Rock radio show!

      16. Don't Touch The Dancers....Don't Be Shy.....download from a local combo who have since broken up unfortunatly. Some nice glam and powerpop influences in some of their stuff!

      17. Sir John A MacDonalds.....Quit School....from the Quit School CD....Ottawa based garagepunkers who are all named after Canada's first Prime Minister.

      18. The Minstrels....It Isn't True....from the Come Out To Play EP on What Wave Records. Quebec City based garage pop combo who moved around a lot after releasing this, their first record back in 1989.

      19. Whipping Wind....Don't Get Into It....from a 7" and is local powerpop from a couple of years back. This is also available on a 4 track CD.

      20. The Finks...Can't Say No....from a 7" and more local powerpop, this time from the late 80's and these guys did quite well on local AM radio here in town.

      21. Second Thoughts....Wound Up....from a 7" and even more local powerpop, this time from the very early 80's. Remember seeing this band at the Cedar Lounge, maybe The Firehall and maybe Fryfogles way back then.....had to fade this out as we ran out of time but not tunes.

Thanx for all the phone calls, facebook messages, emails and Heys!!!  Back again next week with more noise to annoy!

    • Radio What Wave Playlist January 14/2016  David Bowie RIP

This is a short David Bowie special with a quick look at the late 60's mod years and then a quick overview of the 70's glam years as we had a short show due to a sporting event.

      1. David Bowie....I Dig Everything....from a compilation called This Is Mod. Back in David's 1966 mod days and definitely sums up his musical taste.

      2. David Bowie and The Lower Third....Can't Help Thinking About Me....from a compilation called We Love The Pirates. More 1966 mod sounds!

      3. Davy Jones and The Lower Third....You've Got A Habit Of Leaving Me....1965 Parlaphone 7" produced by Shel Talmy. You can hear some Who influences on this one!

      4. Davy Jones and The Lower Third...Baby Loves That Way....flip side of the above, again with some Who sounds coming through at the very end.

      5. David Bowie....Black Country Rock....from The Man Who Sold The World LP

      6. David Bowie....The Man Who Sold The World.....as above.

      7. David Bowie....Changes....from Hunky Dory LP.

      8. David Bowie....Friday On My Mind....from the Pinups LP.  This also goes out to Stevie Wright, vocalist for The Easybeats, who originally recorded this song, as Stevie passed away about 3 weeks ago. Pinups was Bowie's LP of 60's covers and he was probably the first artist to do something like this in the 70's, to actually pay homage to his influences and fave tunes!

      9. David Bowie....Queen Bitch....from Hunky Dory LP...The Demics used to cover this live back in the Cedar Lounge days here in London Ontario.

      10. David Bowie....Suffragette City....from the Ziggy Stardust LP.

      11. David Bowie....Panic In Detroit....from the Alladin Sane LP

      12. David Bowie...Cracked Actor....from the Alladin Sane LP

      13. David Bowie....Rebel Rebel...from the Diamond Dogs LP

      14. David Bowie....Diamond Dogs....from the Diamond Dogs LP

      15. David Bowie....Sorrow....from the Pinups LP and this is probably my fave Bowie tune!

      16. David Bowie....Rock'n'Roll With Me....from the Diamond Dogs LP

Hope you enjoyed our short tribute to David Bowie, a huge influence on just about every musical scene!  Thanks for the phone calls, emails, facebook messages and Heys!
Back again next week with a full length show and we'll do a short special on Giorgio Gomelsky, founder of the Crawdaddy Club where The Rolling Stones, Yardbirds and many others first got their start.

    • Radio What Wave Playlist December 31st

Happy New Year!!! This show was a look back at some of our fave music from 2015 and paying our respects to the departed, this time; Carson Van Osten (bass for Nazz), John Bradbury (drummer for The Specials), Stevie Wright (vocals for The Easybeats) and Lemmy of Motorhead infamy. We also ran right through till 8:30 so this is an extra long 2.5 hour show and we still ran outta time well before tunes....

      1. The Mongrels....Do It....from their 2013 demo and they are playing sunday at the Richmond Hotel from 4 till 7 as part of the Rock'n'Roll Rent Party.

      2. Sloan...Good In Everyone....from their One Chord To Another CD from 1996. Sloan were playing Victoria Park as part of London's New Year's activities.  Don't let this power pop sound fool you, these guys are real tough as one of them was just wearing a short sleeve tee shirt outside while playing....it's winter here in London!!!

      3. Sloan....Penpals....from their Twice Removed Cd from 1994.

      4. Sloan...Underwhelmed....from their Smeared CD from 1992, this is the song that people remember.  Jack Rabid's Big Takeover Zine had an in depth interview w/Sloan in the last couple of issues.

      5. The Nazz....Open My Eyes....from the Best Of Lp on Rhino....a vehicle to bring Todd Rundgren to mass exposure and this was the last band that Carson Van Osten was involved in. From here, he went on to work for Disney and Todd went on to international stardom.

      6. The Easybeats....Gonna Have A Good Time....from the Best Of LP on Rhino Records....a song covered by many, here's the original written by the team of Vanda/Young who went on to produce the first LP's of AC DC and brought them to stardom. The Easybeats featuring Stevie Wright on vocals, were the first of the super groups to emerge from Australia in the mid 60's.

      7. The Easybeats...For My Woman....from the Easy As Can Be Lp on Fan Club Records....killer tune!!!

      8. The Easybeats....Wedding Ring.... as above.

      9. The Easybeats....Friday On My Mind....from the Best Of Lp on Rhino....absolute killer tune that we can all identify with and still stands to this day almost 50 years after it's release! RIP Stevie Wright!!!

      10. Motorhead.....Overkill....from the Take No Prisoners CD.  By now, everyone should know that Lemmy passed away earlier this week. I can't top any of the tributes you can find on the internet....just do a search and there are literally TONS of glowing tributes. We'll stick to playing the tunes at Radio WW.

      11. Motorhead....Dead Men Tell No Tales....as above.

      12. Wendy and Lemmy....Stand By Your Man.....from a 7" on Bronze Records. Wendy is Wendy from The Plasmatics, a band similar to Motorhead in that they were like by punks and metalheads for their destructive behaviour and do it their own way approach to the music. RIP to Wendy, Lemmy and Phil who were all involved in this recording.

      13. Motorhead....Leaving Here....from a Stiff 7" from 1978. This song was  done by The Birds (UK combo that Ronnie Wood was in from 1965).

      14. Motorhead.....Motorhead.....from the LP of the same name....talk about marketing!!RIP Lemmy!

      15. The Specials....Rude Boy....recorded live at Hurrahs New York 2/1980. This is for drummer John Bradbury who passed away earlier this week. He was involved in the band right at the beginning, left after a few years, then rejoined and was involved right to the end.

From here on, we play some of our fave tunes/bands from 2015...

      16. Hiroshima Hearts....14 Floors.... from their self titled CD. Local combo who we had live to air earlier this year and put on a great performance!! They've got a show coming up later this month and we'll give you details when the time is closer!

      17. Newport Electric....One Of A Million....from the So It Goes CD. Local combo who played a Rock'n'Roll Rent Party earlier this year and they have a show this saturday night at the APK with our good pal Fireball Grant!

      18. 63 Monroe....She's Electric....from their Punk Rock Soldier CD. Local combo that has been around longer than most of the people involved in CHRW!

      19. Red Arms....Chorus Of Life....from their recent CD, Welcome To The New Cold War. This has been available as a download for awhile, but was made a physical product for a recent show at Grooves Records. Caught the show and the band was super tight and sounded almost exactly like the recorded product!! Check them out if you get a chance!

      20. Red Arms....Quiet Resolution... as above.

      21. The 905s....What Are We We Receiving....from the Shake Down CD. Our fave band from Brampton Ontario and this CD got a lot of airplay this year on Radio WW and deserved it all!!

      22. The Hypnotics....Modern Art Entertainment....from the Modern Art Entertainment CD. Windsor Ontario based rock'n'roll combo that features David Konstantino of our sister radio show, Revolution Rock, heard saturday eve from CJAM on the University Of Windsor radio station. A really cool CD that you'll be hearing lots of in the new year!!   And it'll be out on vinyl shortly!!!

      23. Mere Humans...Ain't All Gone....from their download and they are from Ottawa. Former members of The Evil Farm Children and they hope to have this out on vinyl in the near future.

      24. Dave Rave and the Governors....Sweet American Music.....from the CD of the same name. We had Dave Rave live on Radio WW this past fall and as always, he had loads of great rock'n'roll stories and songs for us. Dave also got to open  for The Flamin' Groovies when they played Hamilton recently, a life long dream of his!!!!

      25. Noble Savages.....Fire In The World....from the Four Off The Floor 7" EP on Transistor 66 Records. Hamilton's oldest teen punks finally get a proper vinyl release!!

      26. Noble Savages....She's So Serious....from Noise Pollution 7" EP on It's Trash Records, a 4 song EP of Hamilton bands. It's Trash is also a radio show heard alternate fridays at 6PM right here on CHRW.

      27. The Sir John A MacDonalds....Beer And Ignorance....from the Quit School CD. Brand new and from Ottawa this features our good pal Patrick on vocals and guitar. This is as Canadian as can be as the band is named for our first Prime Minister....and for some weird reason, all the band members are named Sir John A......

      28. Dynamite Pussy Club....Power....from their most recent CD and they are from Bath UK. They were featured on our first ever Radio WW Session a couple of years back.

      29. Sons Of Mod....Hamburg Stomp....from their brand new self titled release and they are from Australia.

      32. Barrence Whitfield and the Savages.....Willow....from the Under The Savage Sky LP on Bloodshot Records. Barrence and company came through London this past summer and were absolutely KILLER on stage!!! Easily one of the best shows of the year that we saw!!

      33. Dany Laj and the Looks.....Mr Rebound....from the Word On The Street Lp....one of my faves from this year and it's finally out on vinyl. The band came through to a really small crowd this past spring and are due back April 1st opening up for Paul Collins at Call The Office here in London. Don't miss this band that plays powerpop that way it was played in the late 70's!!!

      34. The Routes.... It's My Time....from the Skeletons CD.....another of my faves of this year and this trio is from Japan. Recently did a tour of Europe where they went down really well!!

      35. Archie and The Bunkers....Sally Lou....self titled on Dirty Water Records....another of my faves of the year, this is 2 teenage brothers from Cleveland who are mature way beyond their years and understand rock'n'roll. Drums, keyboards and vocals is all it takes as these kids have the chops to actually open up for the likes of The Sonics and others in their home town!! Would Love to see these guys live!!

      36. The Ballantynes....Argent....from the Dark Drives Life Signs LP on La Ti Da Records out of Vancouver. Another of my faves of the year and this LP has to be played all at once to really appreciate it. It's got a great late night soul vibe that goes down really really nice!!!

      37. The Scenics....Do The Wait....from the In The Summer CD on Dream Tower that just came out. Re-masterings of recordings done in the late 70's of this Toronto combo that was lumped in with the punk scene, but had more in common with bands like The Talking Heads and XTC for their quirky pop sounds.

      38. Bloodshot Bill.....Man In Love....recorded right here at Radio WW when Bill dropped by prior to a show at Call The Office that evening. Bill played some of his fave tunes and told some rock'n'roll stories during that show.

      39. Twin Fin.....Jungle Room....from their brand new CD Whiskey Wine and Venom Love. Local combo that has a late 50's R&B influence to its sound. Some of the members were in the local rockabilly combo Duke Sedan and the Hi-Tones and few years back.

      40. The Vagoos.....I Guess You're My Girl.....from their brand new release on Off Label from Germany.

    • December 4, 2015 7:38 PM CST
    • Radio What Wave Playlist December 3 2015

This is an all London Ontario show with the emphasis on late 70's/early 80's as we were broadcast live at the opening night for Andrew Lewis' Pop Up Poster Show and Sale happening at Westland Gallery here in London Ontario. We played several requests by Andrew Lewis as well as a few selections from Andrew's former combo Captain Scarlet and The Mysterons.

      1. The Mongrels.... All Systems Go....from a 2013 demo. The Mongrels are doing their monthly Rock'n'Roll Rent Party on Sunday December 6 from 4 till 7 PM at the Richmond Hotel.

      2. The Demics....New York City....from the New York City CD on OPM.  Probably the most known song to come out of this city for a certain age group.

      3. The Demics....Heart Of The City....live at the Cedar Lounge 1978. Remember The Demics covering this one many times live. When The Demics first started, their sets consisted mostly of covers, assisting many of us in filling out our record collections!

      4. The Demics...7 and 7 Is....live in Toronto in 1980/81, venue unknown.

      5. Orie Hitt Machine....Killer Inside Me....recorded in somone's bedroom and featuring poet John Cone on vocals?

      6. Uranus....'53 Buick...from their very first 7" EP. Recorded at Awes Studio here in London Ontario back in about 1978.

      7. Uranus....Dixie Fried....live from CFNY, Toronto 1980 and recorded at a car show.

      8. The Stoves...Just My Style....live at the Cedar Lounge 1979. One of those bands that had it all; good song writing, good musicianship, 3 part harmonies, great live show but never got around to releasing anything in their short lifespan.

      9. The Regulators....Sherry Share-It....recorded live at The Polish Hall 1979. Heavily influenced by the Velvet Underground and Lou Reed, this combo did release one 7" and played out many times.

      10. NFG....Cyanide.....early demo featuring original guitarist Simon. Found this at the end of a cassette that someone gave me. Sound quality is piss poor, but the overall sound of the song is so different than what came out later. NFG morphed into 63 Monroe which still exist to this day.

      11. Radio 4....Is God A Man....early 80's demo from this band that features Mark Deroux on bass.

      12. Sheep Look Up....Burning....from their cassette. This band evolved from Radio 4 and featured Mark Deroux on bass. Sheep were around for several years, released a 12" EP, appeared on a couple of compilations, moved to Toronto and appeared headed for bigger things until it all fizzled out.

      13. 10 Heads....Solid On The Funky Bass....demo that was written for Mark Deroux when he passed and features the early 00 lineup of 10 Heads.  10 Heads have reformed as Ten Heads on Ten and we saw them last week and they put on a great live show!!!

      14. Captain Scarlet and The Mysterons.... A Piece Of Me....from the cassette What's All The Fuzz About that came with What Wave Zine 17 back in 1989. The Scar, as they were commonly called, were a 3 piece with Andrew on the drums, Ian on the bass (now a high school teacher) and Tom Dunphy on guitar and vocals (now in internationally known country band The Rizdales).

      15. Legend Killers....Shoot Magoo....from Four Whom The Bell Tolls...the 7" EP that came with What Wave zine #16. Meant to play the flip side with Capt Scarlet....ooopppsss!!!

      16. Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons....Wednesday Rain.....late 80's demo.

      17. Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons....Are You Really Gone....from Four Whom The Bell Tolls, the 7" EP that came with What Wave zine #16 1988.

      18. Purple Toads....40 Pounder Blues.....from their first LP on Star Records and a request by Andrew. The only non-London band we played on this show, but the Purple Toads did play London many times in the late 80's. They were from Oshawa Ontario.

      19. UIC....Cropdusting....recorded live at Call The Office 3/16/1985. UIC were from Exeter, just north of London on Highway 4, later moving to Toronto. This particular live recording has appeared with video but has been removed from youtube.

      20. Boy From Nowhere.... Teenage Head....late 80's demo. Boy From Nowhere played at the Toys For Tots show last weekend and absolutely killed it!!! Check out the pictures on the Radio What Wave facebook page.

      21. Flying Squad.... Think For Yourself.....mid 80's demo. London Ontario's only biker rock band!

      22. Generics....Rockers....early 80's demo....they released one 7" EP that has been bootlegged a couple of times.

      23. The Hippies....Nuclear Disaster....from their only 7" record.

      24. Ukase....Jealousy....late 80's demo. This song was originally done by The Zellots, another London Ontario combo, of which a couple are members of Ukase.

Big Thanx for all the phone calls, emails, Facebook messages and Heys!!! And to Andrew Lews, Poster Artist of the Highest Degree, for playing Radio What Wave in the background at the opening night party for his Pop Up Poster Show and Sale. The Show and Sale continues until Sunday at the Westland Gallery here in London Ontario.
Next week, it's all female voices as we commemerate the Montreal Massacre, a 1989 shooting of female engineering students at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal. If you tune in, you might just hear female led bands like; The Angry Dragons, Vibrating Beds, The Zellots, Hiroshima Hearts, Terror Lake, Twin Fin, Nikki and The Corvettes and so much more.

    • Have we ever had a forum for favorite R'N'R movies ?  we're starting one, now.

It DOES'NT HAVE TO BE A MOVIE ABOUT ROCK'N'ROLL , AND A MOVIE WITH JUST ONE OR TWO OUTSTANDING MUSICAL PERFORMANCES IS PERFECTLY ACCEPTABLE.

Overlap is inevitable , and encouraged. Documentaries are ok , too.

The Girl Can't Help It , Riot on Sunset Strip , Rock'n'Roll High School , Let The Good Times Roll , It's a Bikini World , The World's Greatest Sinner , Blue Suede Shoes (UK) , The Sore Losers , HEAD , King Creole , Jailhouse Rock , Don't Knock The Rock , Hot Rod Gang , The London Rock'n'Roll Show.........

Swedish band put out this thrasher in 1978.
