    • August 7, 2015 4:30 PM CDT
    • Radio What Wave Playlist Aug 6/2015. Part 2 of Bands We Saw At The Black Shire Pub

      1. 905s....Direction...from their latest CD, Shake Down. Andy Butler and the 905s played one of our Teenage Rock'n'Roll shows and impressed quite a few folks here in London.

      2. Johnny Terrien and the Bad Lieutenants....Back To The Beach...from a demo they sent us. JT played many shows at the Black Shire, including the above mentioned Teenage Rock'n'Roll Show as well as opening for Jeremy Gluck and the Barracudas, impressing one Jeremy Gluck!

      3. Legendary Dirt Bikers.... First Dog In Space...from their only 7". Fried Dirtbiker's psych combo after the demise of the Chickens.

      4. Oily Birds...Love Me Till The Sun Shines....recorded live on Radio WW 4/29/2010. Local combo who played at just about every venue in this town.

      5. Oily Birds....Second Cousin.... as above.

      6. Puff Forbes....John Oster Hairdryer...from a self titled CD. Stratford art rockers who dressed head to toe in white coveralls and had red wool hats covering their faces while playing.

      7. Puff Forbes....Song 665... as above...had to play 2 tunes by these guys as they are so good!

      8. Barracudas....I Wish It Could Be 1965 Again...1980 7". Jeremy Gluck and the Young Barracudas played one of 3 Canadian dates right here at the Black Shire! Jeremy lived up to expectations and played lots and lots of early Barracuda faves!

      9. Barracudas....The Way We've Changed....1983 7".

      10. Barreracudas....Diet Coke....from a live WFMU broadcast on Terre's Cherry Blossom Clinic radio show. Although they played on the same show as the Barracudas, they were in no way a tribute or homage to them....straight power pop from Atlanta and one of the best bands we ever saw at the Black Shire!

      11. Bad Bad Bad....Fucked Up....live recording from the Black Shire 3/29/2012. 2 piece band from Halifax who tore up the house!

      12. Eliza and The Strange...Baby Don't Be Nice....live recording from the Black Shire 3/29/2012. Eliza were from Halifax and morphed into Bloody Diamonds making several repeat visits here to London.

      13. Baketones....I'm A Caveman...from their Unite CD. Amazing 60's style garagepunk from Halifax who came on air prior to their show at the Black Shire. Nothing could prepare me for the devastation of their live show. The keyboard player had a small Farfisa on legs that got a little too close to the edge of the stage during the action. The keyboard went airborn over the edge and the keyboard player jumped over top of the keyboard, somehow landing on the floor with the keyboard on top of him and continued to play!! Real rock'n'roll!!

      14. Myles Deck and The Fuzz....El Mariachi...from the You Can't Heal A Sick Riff CD. Yet another garagerock combo from Halifax....must be something wrong with the water there. This band played only to me and the other band that was on the bill....sorry about the turnout but it was a week night. BTW, Myles Deck is getting married real soon and also has a really cool new combo called The Lord Almightys! See ya at the Barrence Whitfield and the Savages shows Myles!!

      15. Giggleswitch....How Good You Look...from their VII CD. Another good local combo that played just about every venue in this town.

      16. Wormwood Scrubs....Too Late To Go Home...from their self titled CD from 2010.

      17. Duke Sedan and the Hi Tones....Real Cool Daddy...from their only CD. Local combo who played a Lux Interior tribute at the Black Shire and caused a bit of damage to the place. They were banned from the Black Shire for some time....the ghost of Lux was present at the tribute.

      18. Apecassete....Ambiguous....from a self titled CD....Windsor Ontario combo.

      19. Terror Lake....Shit Storm...from a demo CD. Toronto trio who played the Black Shire at least twice and both times blew me away. Artwrock infused psych meets surf from this low profile trio.

      20. Sphinx.... Bad Head....from a split LP with Miesha and The Spanks. They played together at a show at the Black Shire.

      21.  Miesha and the Spanks....MMMMMade For Me....from the CD of the same name and come from Edmonton.

    • Radio What Wave Playlist July 30/2015 Black Shire Pub Special Part 1

Long running club The Black Shire Pub closed down about a week ago. It started well over 10 years ago as The Last Drop prior to it taking the name Black Shire Pub. We put on many a show here, including the infamous Battle Of The 2 Piece Band series that lasted at least 5 battles. This, and the next edition of Radio WW, we are going to be playing only bands that we saw at the Black Shire Pub. And that's a heck of a lot as you'll be hearing.

      1. Nasty Rashes....Hot Rod Hearse....from the CHRW EP recorded on Radio WW 5/1/2008. This was the first band we ever saw at the Black Shire, back in the days when it was a sit down at tables type of venue.

      2. Legend Killers....Slow Death....from the We're Workin On It CD. The Legend Killers were the second band we saw at the Black Shire as Nasty Rashes opened for them.

      3. Gorgon....Girl Gang...from the Presents Corpse Whale CD. From Winnipeg and they shared a member with Angry Dragons who were on the same bill at the Black Shire.

      4. Angry Dragons...Love You Tonite...from their self titled CD. From Winnipeg and a killer 60's garage punk meets 60's girl group kinda outfit. Well suited for dancing and making a fool of yourself while having a really good time. One of my fave bands to play the Black Shire.

      5. Standstills...Blues Radio...from a demo and one of the many 2 piece combos that played our infamous Battle Of The 2 Piece Bands shows! Now based in Oshawa, Standstills are presently on a cross Canada tour.

      6. Speaking Tongues....Run To My Door...from their self titled debut CD. First time i saw this band, danced so hard i blew the bottom of my shoe!! Luckily the shoe repair shop could put my shoe back together! Another 2 piece combo as are the next bunch of bands.

      7. Speaking Tongues...Graveyard Blues...as above.

      8. Pack AD....Stray...from their debut CD, Tintype. From Vancouver and they've visited London at least a dozen times since playing a Battle Of The 2 Piece Bands!

      9. Can Too's....I Don't Wanna Shake Your Hand....from their Le Can Too's CD.

      10. catl....Ragged And Dirty....from their debut cassette. catl made their very first London appearance at a Battle Of The 2 Piece Bands. They had just become a 3 piece (Sarah had just joined on keyboards) prior to coming to London, but we let them play anyway and became instant fans of their sound!

      11. Cordcalling....Wicked Desire...from a Live To Air on Radio WW 3/26/2009.

      12. Lonesome Ghost....Haunted By God...from their Empty Church Rough Cuts CD. Coolest band to ever come out of Aylmer Ontario. Drummer Brandon is now in Intrusions on vocals.

      13. Lonesome Ghost...Girl U Want....as above.

      14. Bucket Seat.... Colt 45...from their self titled cassette. Victoria BC via London Ontario for this 2 piece band.

      15. Will Crum....Pretty Baby...from the Will Crum and the Blue Maroons CD. California based duo who played wild rock'n'roll with the lights out!

      16. Hot Kid...Get On The Road...from the Got It To Give CD....Kitchener area based 2 piece.

      17. Skirt Chasers...Motor Man....from their self titled debut CD. Toronto based 2 piece.

      18. Shanker and Romps....Super Dude...from their Pancakin' CD. Last of the 2 piece bands and they came from Ottawa.

      19. Sunday Sinners....It's So Lonely....from their Sweet Jam CD and from Montreal.

      20. Hotel Lobbyists....Building Complex...from their Jurassic Beaver CD and from Vancouver.

      21. Light Bulb Alley....Pepper Spray...from their The Sound Of Things CD. From Montreal and played many more shows here in London.

      22. Hook Up....Silver Kiss...from their Tomorrow and Today CD. From Montreal, then moved to Hamilton and now way out west in Saskatchewan with a new name and sound.

      23. Evil Farm Children...Border Blaster....from the Evilling CD and from Ottawa.

      24. Gerry Alvarez....Voices From The Sky....from his Omega Tea Time CD. Gerry was once a member of the infamous Gruesomes.

Thanx to all the phoners, emailers, facebook messagers and people who way HEY!! Back again next week with Part 2 of Bands We Saw At The Black Shire Pub.

    • I'm looking for garage (or psychpop, retro-yé-yé etc) with female vocalists that sings in french. Preferably contemporary stuff. The Limiñanas is a good example of the kind of stuff that I'm looking for.

    • ....what I meant was , the sound for the first gig left a lot to be desired , but , the second sounded great. It was a very busy weekend. I also saw Nobunny (Who's returned to Chicago , but , still planning his next move.), The Cynics (Who played to about 40 people , and KILLED it.) , and local faves , The Polkaholics and The Bama Lamas.

    • July 19, 2015 12:17 AM CDT
    • MOST OF YOU PROBABLY KNOW , BUT.....Fred made a full recovery and came to Chicago last weekend to play two shows. Unfortunately , after Fred spent a year getting well , Andrew Loomis , Dead Moon's Drummer , had to drop out the tour , because he's very ill. Fred and Toody discussed it with him ,and he maintained that they should not cancel the tour. Not surprisingly , Pierced Arrows' Drummer , Kelly Haliburton , was called in to fill the drum slot. So ,  in theory , it was Pierced Arrows doing a Dead Moon set , but , they were accepted with open arms by the fans , a majority of whom were too young to have seen them , the first time around . It's shameful how many old fucks like me did NOT show up. Despite sounding underrehearsed , this year's Dead Moon brought the rock. Their second , outdoor , show sounded particularly good.  Fred , ever the professional ,made sure the sound people had all their ducks in a row. But , it could have  been better , soundwise. Could have done without the moshpit , but , that's just me.

FRED LOOKS AND SOUNDS GREAT , AND WAS HIS  QUICK - WITTED SELF AT ALL TIMES.

Still making an ass of bands too young to remember Dead Moon in their heyday , much less even know "You Must Be a Witch".
