One hour show due to a sporting event starting at 7PM....didn't get to really start our Allen Toussaint tribute, so that'll be next week along with some early Motorhead for Phil Taylor.

      1. Dave Rave and the Governors...Sweet American Music....from the recent CD of the same name. Dave Rave is part of the Gord Lewis Band who open up for The Flamin' Groovies on Tuesday at This Ain't Hollywood.

      2. Dany Laj and the Looks...Where's The Love....from the recent Word On The Street CD which is now available on vinyl. Played this song last week and it's been stuck in my head since, repeated plays is the only form of musical exorcism i'm aware.

      3. Ten Heads...You Clean Me Up...from the Swimming and Singing CD from 2001. Local combo who have reformed with a few changes and are playing saturday at the APK here in London.

      4. Johnny Terrien and the Bad Lieutenants...El Camino...from their first 7" from 2007. They are also playing at the APK on saturday night, as well as Lucky 6's.

      5. Sonny Vincent....Sink Hole...from his recent Bizarro Hymns CD on Get Hip Records.

      6. The Flamin' Groovies....Shake Some Action....from a promo only 12" and it goes out to Rob the retired Mailman!

      7. The Flamin' Groovies....First Plane Home...from the 1979 LP Jumpin' In The Night.

      8. The Flamin' Groovies...Yeah My Baby....from the 1978 LP Now. And right around here i hit the wrong button and played part of a tune by Sonny Vincent....sorry Sonny!!!Meant to play a Flamin' Groovies commercial. Way too much crazyness happening in the onair studio with the phone a-ringing and 2 guests!!  All for fun!!!

      9. The Flamin' Groovies....Teenage Head....from the 1971 Teenage Head LP

      10. The Flamin' Groovies...Have You Seen My Baby....as above. We played all these Flamin' Groovies tunes as we're off to see The Groovies on tuesday at This Ain't Hollywood in Hamilton Ontario.

      11. The Noble Savages....She's So Serious...from the brand new Noise Pollution compilation EP on It's Trash Records.

      12. The Noble Savages....Fire In The World...from the brand new Four Off The Floor EP on Transistor 66 Records.

      13. The Noble Savages...Take Some PIlls... as above.

      14. Eve Hell.....The Truth....from the new Transistor 66 download to celebrate their 100th release. T66 is the finest record/CD label in Winnipeg Manitoba!!

      15. The ArtWoods.... I Feel Good....from the 100 Oxford Street LP that collects most of their releases. This particular song was written by Allen Toussaint and released in 1966 and was to be the start of our Allen Toussaint memorial but we ran out of time.

Thanx for all that tuned in, all those crazy phone calls, emails, facebook messages and Heys!!! Back again next week, with a full 90m of rock action!!

      1. Hiroshima Hearts....Rust...from their debut CD. Last week they were number one on the CHRW charts, this week, not.

      2. Louis Jordan....Caledonia....from a Mercury CD called Rock'n'Roll released in 1989. These are the Mercury sessions recorded back in 56/57 with the fabulous Mickey Baker on the guitar. Man can that guy play and so far ahead of his time!! An earlier version of this song was a hit for Louis Jordan back in the 40's. Most Louis Jordan compilations just collect his work from the chart topping work from the 40's, as great as it was, this later stuff was even better but didn't do as well in the charts.

      3. Louis Jordan...Let The Good Times Roll... as above....again, Mickey Baker kills it!

      4. The Limboos....Good Times....from a compilation 7" called We Want To Be Black Volume 4 on FOLC Records out of Spain.

      5. King Biscuit Boy....Georgia Slop....from the Mouth Of Steel Lp from 1984 on Red Lightnin' Records and Distro'd in Canada via Stony Plain. King Biscuit Boy was from Hamilton and Canada's greatest harp player for many years running. He started out with Ronnie Hawkins, leaving to form Crowbar then went solo releasing many solo records and playing countless sessions for others. He passed away in 2003 after battling the bottle.

      6. Muscle Souls....Nothing Today....download from a Toronto mod/soul combo who have played many gigs with...

      7. The Reply.... I Must Stop...from their Downtown Soul CD from 2013. Toronto mod/soul combo that we've had play here in London a coupla times and they put on a fantastic live show!

      8. The Balantynes...Argent...from the recent Dark Drives Life Signs Lp on La Ti Da Records out of Vancouver. A current fave of mine and a band i'd love to see live, but it probably won't happen as they are based in Vancouver and the logistics of touring across Canada aren't agreeable. So for now, i've got this record, a 12" EP and 2 singles.

      9. Marcellus Wallace....Movin' On Up....from their self titled debut CD. Local soul/funk combo who put on a Killer live show!!

      10. After Funk....Rage And Chuff...from the brand new download Til The Sun Comes Up. Toronto soul/funk combo who just happened to be in town at Call The Office the day this show aired.

      11. The Scenics....In The Summer....from the brand new CD, In The Summer on Dream Tower Records. Studio recordings from 1977/78 that have been sonicly tuned and sound better than ever! You can catch live footage of The Scenics back in the day on The Last Pogo Jumps Again documentary.

      12. Dany Laj and The Looks...Where's The Love....from the Word On The Street CD. The vinyl version of this is now available, just go to the band's facebook page for details on how to order. Hopefully we get the band back to London before year end as promised...hint hint.

      13. Human Switchboard....Saturday's Girl....from the 1981 LP, Who''s Landing In My Hangar? on Faulty Products. Cleveland based combo that formed in the late 70's and survived until the mid 80's releasing only one studio LP, coupla singles, a live LP, and a compilation on ROIR cassettes after the fact. Huge Velvet Underground fans but not really obvious from this track as it sounds more like early 60's girl group sounds in the Blondie style.

      14. Flamin' Groovies.... Shake Some Action....from a 1980 single on Line Records out of Germany. Slightly different than the version on the LP of the same name. FG's are scheduled to hit This Ain't Hollywood in Hamilton on the 17th and Toronto on the 18th....

      15. Flamin' Groovies....Let That Boy Rock'n'Roll....1975 7" on Philips Records from France.

      16. Flamin' Groovies...River Deep Mountain High....1981 7" on Underdog Records from France. Recorded at Gold Star Studios and Chris Wilson has to strain a little bit to reach those high notes but sounds like he's having fun while doing it.

      17. Long Day's Journey....The Oracle....recent download from this one man psychedelic band from Hamilton Ontario. And there's a brand new full length just released today called The Further Adventures Of The Electric Trip.

      18. Hunger....Workshop....from the Strictly From Hunger! LP from this late 60's/early 70's combo from Portland.

      19. Hank and Frank... Nancy Sinatra....from the cassette, Garunge that came with What Wave zine #14 in 1987. Current combo, Tuerto Loco play this song and they are playing at the St Regis on Saturday night.

      20. Chris Houston....Girls Are Swell....from his 1986 LP, Hate Filled Man on Caucasion Records. Chris was in the Forgotten Rebels, a punk band, back in the late 70's and currently does the occasional solo acoustic gig, where he plays the odd song from that era.

      21. Frankie and Jimmy....Maggie Camp Blues.... a demo from this Hamilton Ontario based blues combo and it looks like we've run outta time way before we've run outta tunes to play this week!

Big thanx for all the phone calls, emails, facebook messages, facebook thanx (there were quite a few this week!!!) and all the Heys!!!! That's what makes it all worthwhile!!!
Back again next week with more noise to annoy.

This was an all new show (with 2 exceptions) as so much cool new stuff has come out recently. And this is only the new stuff we've been exposed to, tons more hidden away waiting to be listened to.

      1. The Mongrels...Do It....from their last Radio WW session. And they will  be playing at the monthly Rock'n'Roll Rent Party happening this sunday from 5 till 8PM at the Richmond Hotel in downtown London.

      2. Dustbin Flowers...My Little World....brand new recording of this tune that's going to be on their next CD.

      3. Hiroshima Hearts...14 Floors...from their debut CD which just happens to be number one on the CHRW Radio charts this week! Congrats to HH!!

      4. 30 Helens...The Deep....from their recently released Vague Rants EP. Brand new local combo that features the bass player from Hiroshima Hearts.

      5. M&M Meats... Runners Love....from the brand new Transistor 66 download to celebrate the 100th release on this Winnipeg based label. M&M are not associated with the food chain of the same name and come from Winnipeg.

      6. The Zorgs...Milkshake....another track from the Transistor 66 download. The Zorgs also come from Winnipeg and the download is free from the T66 website.

      7. The Ativans....Jump The Shark...as above, but this band comes from Calgary.

      8. The Noble Savages....I Don't Wanna Be A Boy No More....from their brand new Four Off The Floor 7" on Transistor 66 Records. Hamilton based combo we've played many times on Radio WW!!

      9. The Noble Savages...Lobotomy City.... as above. When this band first formed, our good pal and former Londoner Rob Munro (RIP) was on guitar.

      10. Dynamite Pussy Club...Power....from their album that should be out next month....from Bath UK.

      11. The Government...PhD on Beat....from a brand new 7" on FOLC Records out of Spain which is where this combo comes from. Not to be confused with the Canuck combo of the same name from the late 70's/early 80's.

      12. The Government....Old New Age... as above.

      13. Macumba Brothers....Preacher Man....from a brand new EP on FOLC Records and these guys are also from Spain!

      14. The Trip Wires...Come On and Do The Swim....from We Want To Be Black Volume 4 on FOLC Records. West coast combo on this 7" compilation from Spain.

      15. MFC Chicken....Study Hall....from the brand new Solid Gravy LP on Dirty Water Records from the UK. MFC are from the UK and have also just released a couple of singles on FOLC Records.

      16. MFC Chicken...14 Girls.... as above.

      17. Archie and the Bunkers...Sally Lou....from their brand new album on Dirty Water Records. Two teenage brothers from Cleveland that sound WAY beyond their age!!!

      18. Flesh Rag...I Gotta Go....from the brand new Noise Pollution 7" EP on It's Trash Records. 4 song EP of all Hamilton combos.

      19. Jimmy And The Jerks...Critical Mass, Critical Trash... as above. The Jimmy in this combo, is the same as Frankie and Jimmy, the blues duo we've played many times on Radio WW. And we had them do a live to air session back a couple months.

      20. The Scenics...O Boy....from the brand new In The Summer CD on DreamTower Records. A remixing of recordings done back in 77/78. The Scenics were a Toronto based combo, who really didn't fit in with the rest of the punk/new wave combos of their time period. They were way more artier, but had a tough edge to their sound which doesn't sound dated at all.

      21. The Scenics...Do The Wait... as above.

      22. Dead Beat Poets....In My Iron Lung....brand new 7" that features Frank Secich who played with Stiv Bators in The Dead Boys and Stiv's later powerpop bands.

      23. Sons Of Mod....This Is Sound....from a soon to be released LP. Australian combo with lots of mod and garage influences.

      24. Sons Of Mod....Ghost Train.... as above.

      25. 63 Monroe....Bloodstains...from their recent Punk Rock Soldier CD. Recent recordings from this band that has been around longer than many of our listeners!

      26. The Cramps....The Crusher....from the 12" EP of the same name. This goes out to Danny P and to everyone that celebrates Halloween.

      27. Sonny Vincent....Faster Pussycat...from his brand new Bizarro Hymns on Get Hip Records.

All brand new releases today, except The Mongrels and Cramps. Hope you enjoyed all the new sounds! Back again next week with more noise to annoy.

      2. The Ballantynes....PMA...from their recent Dark Drives, Life Signs LP on La Ti Da Records out of Vancouver. They've also released a couple of singles and a 12" that are just as good as this LP.

      3. The Ballantynes....Let's Go....as above.

      4. Vintage Experience....Little Bit Of Soul...from their latest demo. VE are playing saturday night at Jimbo's here in London.

      7. Jr. Gone Wild...Drivin' Thru Texas....as above. Jr played London several times in the late 80's and always put on a really entertaining show. There just might be some pics from the London shows in the documentary.

      8. Elk...Shaking Hands...from the Balm Beach 7" EP from 2011. St Catherines/Welland/Toronto based combo that have some really nice poppy garage sounds.

      9. Deadly Snakes...I Can't Sleep At Night...from a double 7" on In The Red Records from 2004. The last time they played Call The Office, Greg Cartwright of Oblivians fame was in the band on guitar and vocals.

      20. The Sinners....No Brains Required....1980 7" from London Ontario. We had these guys on  air for an interview about 10 years ago, when they did a reunion at Call The Office.

      21. Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons...Are You Really Gone....from a 7" called Four Whom The Bell Tolls that came free with What Wave zine #16 1988. Singer Tom Dunphy is now in The Rizdales, a country band that backs Wanda Jackson whenever she tours Ontario. Drummer Andrew Lewis is now a world famous poster designer and even did a cover for What Wave zine many years ago!

    • Radio What Wave Playlist Sept 24/2015. Mike 'Star' Shulga Tribute

This show is a tribute to Mike Star, owner of Star Records, Star Record Label and organizer of the Star Club, a long time fixture on the Oshawa Ontario scene. Mike unexpectedly passed away last week. This show we'll be playing only records on the Star label or live recordings from the Star Club.

      1. Charlie Pickett and the Eggs.....American Travel Lust....recorded live at the Star Club 2/9/1985.

      2. Charlie Pickett and the Eggs....Honey Hush/Train Kept A Rollin'... as above.

      3. Forgotten Rebels...No Beatles Reunion....from their first LP, In Love With The System. Coincidentally, Forgotten Rebels will be at Call The Office on Oct 3rd.

      4. Forgotten Rebels...Hello Hello...from their This Ain't Hollywood LP. Thanx to Star Records for keeping these LP's in print for so many years.

      5. Forgotten Rebels....I Think Of Her...from In Love With The System.

      6. The Paladins....E McDaniels....from their R&R LP. This is the Toronto Paladins who only released the one LP, not to be confused with the west coast US band of the same name. Former Bopcat Duane Wayne was guitarist.

      7. The Paladins....Shake All Night... as above.

      8. Dr Feelgood....Mad Man Blues...from the LP of the same name and was licensed on Star in 1988. This was recorded long after Wilko Johnson was guitarist but it's still a pretty decent LP.

      9. Durango 95....Lose Control...from the LP of the same name. Local Oshawa combo of which at least one member of, worked at Star Records, prior to forming Rob's Records.

      10. Durango 95....Maniac Rock...from their second and last LP, Mother's Day, which came out in 1990. long after the band had broken up.

      11. Purple Toads....Gonna Have A Good Time....recorded live at the Star Club10/12/1985. 3 of the 5 members of Durango 95, along with a new drummer formed the Purple Toads. PT played many many times at the Key West Club here in London Ontario.

      12. Purple Toads....40 Pounder Blues...from their self titled debut LP. This song was also featured on a What Wave cassette that came with WW zine back in the mid 80's.

      13. Purple Toads....Wild Time...from their second and last LP, Love Songs For The Hard Of Hearing from 1988.

      14. Raunch Hands....Ford....recorded live at the Star Club 10/12/1985. The Raunch Hands were from NYC and played the Star Club at least twice.

      15. The Creeps....Down At The Night Club...from the Enjoy The Creeps LP. The Creeps were from Sweden and it was a licensing deal on Star Records. Mike also released the CD of the album in Canada, probably his first attempt at releasing CD's as Star was noted as a record store and didn't stock many CDs.

      16. The Cynics....Creepin'...from their Twelve Flights Up LP, another licensing deal. The Cynics are from Pittsburgh and are still active to this day.

      17. The Lyres...Here's A Heart....from the double LP, A Promise Is A Promise. The second LP has Star Bonus on the record. Yet another licensing deal.

      18. The Lyres....She Pays The Rent...as above and this was on the Star Bonus LP.

      19. The Cheshyres....She Treats Me Right....recorded live at the Star Club 9/20/1986. The Cheshyres were a Toronto based band. Singer Wayne Pattern later moved to London and sang for The Evil Hoodoos for awhile. Drummer Ken Anderson went on to The Ultra 5, the Optic Nerve and is presently in the folk duo Hungrytown that tours the world.

      20. The Cheshyres....Route 66... as above.

      21. Laurence Beall and the Sultans....Folsom Prison Blues...from Rockin' The Star Club, recorded at the Star Club.

      22. Ben Vaughn Comb....M M Motor Vehicle....from the Many Moods Of... yet another licensing deal for Star Records. Ben was from New Jersey and later did television soundtracks for That 70's Show and 3rd Rock From The Sun.

      23. Surf Trio....Hang 10...from their Safari In A Living Graveyard LP, another licensing deal for Star. Portland Oregon based surf band.

Over the years we bought a TON of records from Mike either at Star Records, or when he was out at the record shows, something he did for many many years. He always had the absolute best selection of new records at the shows!!  And he bought a ton of What Wave zines from us over the years, always selling out and asking for more!  Thanx for having such great musical taste Mike, you're already missed big time!!

    • Radio What Wave Playlist Sept 17/2015 With Bloodshot Bill

This show is dedicated to Mike 'Star' Shulga, owner of the Star Records Label and Star Records store in Oshawa Ontario. For those that aren't aware, Mike passed away suddenly earlier this week. Mike had been a mainstay of the Canadian record scene since opening his store back in 1974 and attending record shows across the province ever since. He was always the guy with multiple tables of cool records at the shows...ie imports, rare pressings, singles, bootlegs and videos. And if you ever needed to know anything about any of the records he was selling, he'd be able to give you details right off the top of his head! Over the years, we've bought literally TONS of records from Mike. Many of which are among my faves! And Mike would buy stacks of What Wave zines back in the days when we were publishing and would always want more! Thanx for everything over the years Mike, you're going to be sadly missed. Next week we'll be spinning a bunch of Star Records just for you!

      1. Archie and the Bunkers....You're The Victim...brand new on Dirty Water Records out of the UK. This is a duo of Cleveland brothers, ages 14 and 16!! Fucking unbelievable!!!

      3. Bloodshot Bill....Midnite On Mars....from the 10" The Out Of This World Sounds Of....on Squoodge Records from 2012

      4. Bloodshot Bill....Rocket To The Moon....as above.

      5. Bloodshot Bill....Pass It Back.... as above.

      6. Bloodshot Bill....Satellite Rock... as above.

      7. Bloodshot Bill....Don't Care Blues...from the So Blue CD from 2012 on Transistor 66 Records.

      8. Bloodshot Bill...Wolf Call... as above.

      9. Bloodshot Bill....Paradise.... from the Get High CD from 2009 on Transistor 66 Records.

      10. Bloodshot Bill.... Gee Whiz....as above.

      11. Bloodshot Bill....Shick Shack... as above

      12. Bloodshot Bill....Look My Way.... as above.

      13. The Sonics....Leaving Here....from the new This Is....LP. on Revox Records. Bill hadn't heard the new LP and requested it....actually everything played on this show was by Bill's request!! And we need to know the answer to the question, how do you spell Jerry (or is it Gerry) Roslie?  Thanx for the phone calls about this!

      14. The Sonics....Look At Sister...as above.

      15. The Sonics....I Got Your Number... as above.

      16. Bloodshot Bill....All The Time....from the Thunder and Lightning LP from 2011 on Norton Records. Bill has a new one coming out on Norton fairly soon.

      17. Bloodshot Bill....Be Mine Tonight... as above.

      18. Bloodshot Bill....Crazy 'Bout The Girl.... as above.

      19. Bloodshot Bill....Moon Is Hiding....from The Lonesome Road Lp from 2013 on Norton Records.

      21. Bloodshot Bill....You Know Why.... as above.

      22. Bloodshot Bill....Puppy Dog Love....from the Thunder and Lightning LP.

Huge Thanx to Bloodshot Bill for taking the time from his busy schedule to come on the radio live!! Thanx Tons Bloodshot!!! Hope everyone enjoyed this as it was totally unscripted and we were hoping Bill would want to play his guitar more, but he was having too much fun listening to records!!
Back again next week and we'll spin a bunch of Star Records as our proper tribute to Mike Star.

BIG ENCHILADA 89: Spooktacular 2015 by Steve Terrell on Mixcloud

    • OK, so I've started a new podcast on GPPR. It's called Carburetor Dung (obvious tip o' the hat there to Lester Bangs, yo). It's a mixtape-style podcast (complete with cassette tape SFX) and you won't be hearing me blathering on about the music or anything else, for that matter. The only times you might here my voice will be when I occasionally do some sort of station ID or soundbytes... goofy shit like that. Actually, on this first episode, you won't hear my voice at all! That's because I started working on it before I knew what the title would be and then after I'd figured that out, I wasn't around a microphone. So anyway, another thing that's different about this show is it's gonna be all NEW music... stuff basically recorded and released in the past 5-10 years or so. Why? Because I think we need a lot more of that on the network. I dig the old shit, too, I just get tired of hearing ALL old shit and virtually none of the new punk/garage trash that's out there. So maybe we'll get some new listeners to the network with this one. Hope so, anyway. I hope you dig it, but I really couldn't care less if you don't. You can hear the first episode HERE.

    • There are a lot of different Motown comps and greatest hits out there. I've never found a set that really sounds good. Either there's no bass, or the mix is muddy.

What is the best Motown collection out there?
