This show featured an interview with Simon Harvey of Ugly Pop Records, one of the finest record labels in North America. And since the London Record Show is on sunday, it's an almost all record show today.

      1. Tuerto Loco...Nancy Sinatra....recorded live on Radio What Wave 5/12/2011. Tuerto Loco are playing live at the St Regis on saturday night.

      2. The Spy's....Underground...from an Ugly Pop 7". Windsor Ontario combo who played The Cedar Lounge here in London a coupla times, then morphed into The Nelsons.

      3. A Passing Fancy....I'm Losing Tonight....another Ugly Pop 7". Late 60's Toronto combo.

      4. The Real Kids....I Can't Shake That Girl...from their Shake...Outta Control LP on Ugly Pop Records.

Right around here Simon Harvey called to let us know how he was able to release The Real Kids LP, talked about the Spy's 7", some upcoming releases on Ugly Pop and lots more record geekery!!! You can get Ugly Pop records here in London at Speed City Records, or order direct from the Ugly Pop website. A great record label and it's right here in Ontario so get some of these releases for your aural sanity!!

      5. The Real Kids...She Don't Take It.... as above.

      6. Pointed Sticks...What Do You Want Me To Do?....yet another Ugly Pop release. Vancouver powerpop combo from the late 70's/early 80's that played London at least 2X.

      7. The Northwest Company....Hard To Cry...another Ugly Pop release. Late 60's Vancouver punker.

      8. Masters Apprentices....Undecided....another Ugly Pop release. Late 60's Australian punk thumper!

      9. Giggleswitch...How Good You Look....from their VII CD. Local combo that may be playing tonight at the APK.

      10. Buzz Deluxe....Stabbing Party....from a recent demo they sent us.

      11. Noble Savages...Lobotomy City...recent demo that may appear on a Transistor 66 record.

      12. Intrusions....WSIB....demo from this Aylmer Ontario combo whom we had on the show last week.

      13. Noble Krell...Beware Of The Noble Krell...brand new release on Hidden Volume Records. This one arrived just prior to me heading to the radio station, and i didn't even have time to give it a listen prior. It's a good one, as our pal Timothy Gassen of the Marshmallow Overcoat was involved behind the scenes somehow.

      14. Heart Attack Kids...Eh Ok....from their recent 7". Local duo who play around a fair bit.

      15. Captain Bringdown and the Buzzkillers....A Dick Shin....from their only 7". Local combo who recently broke up.

      16. Excelsior....Shut In....from their recent 7". Another local combo who play about infrequently.

      17. Frankie and Jimmy....Mojo Working....from their Scream The Blues LP. Hamilton Ontario duo.

      18. Supreme Bagg Team....Crankin' With Elvis...from Mr Garager's Neighbourhood. 1989 LP on OG/ What Wave Records. Found a few of these and will have them at the record show on sunday.

      19. Flying Squad...Fie On You....from Four Whom The Bell Tolls, 1988 7" on What Wave Records.  We'll have a few of these at the record show on sunday as well.

      20. Bryan Ferry....The In Crowd....from a self titled LP on Atlantic Records.

Big thanx to Simon Harvey of Ugly Pop Records for calling in to talk about his record label. Thanx for all the phone calls, emails, messages etc!!
You can catch me at the London Record Show on Sunday March 22nd at Centennial Hall....I'll be at the CHRW table and also have copies of What Wave 24 and the Graphic Underground: London 1977-1990 book for sale.

This show had an interview with Jonathan Wall of Intrusions and Joe Bonasia of Nobody's Favourite Records record label. And then we added an extra hour to the show, playing Demics live from the Cedar Lounge 1978 (thanx to Keith Wilson for digging this up). For those that don't know, the Demics were London Ontario's first punk combo, heavily influenced by 60's garagepunk/Stooges/Bowie etc.

      1. Demics....Heart Of The City....live from The Cedar Lounge 1978.

      2. Buzz Deluxe...Contagious...brand new demo. They last appeared as a 2 piece, but after a hiatus, they are back playing live as a 3 piece.

      3. Harmonica Lewinsky....Boy On Fire....from their brand new 7" and from Rochester NY.

      4. OBGM's....Pill...from their brand new self titled CD and will be playing at CTO in London tonite.

      5. OBGM's...I Just Wanna Love...as above, but meant to play Inclusions.

RIght around here we had a phone conversation with Jonathan Wall of Intrusions and talked about their show happening tonite at APK in London. From there, we had the world premier of an Inclusion song that was finished mere hours prior to this radio show.

      6. Intrusions....Picture Void....brand new demo

      7. Lonesome Ghost....Haunted By God....from a What Wave cassette released on Record Store Day 4/16/2011. Brandon, the drummer for Lonesome Ghost, is now the singer for Intrusions.

      8. Excelsior....Undead Fourth Reich....from their recent 7" EP Punk Floyd EP. Another local combo well worth checking out.

      9. Earl Vince and The Valiants...Somebody's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked in Tonite....from British Archives Volume 4 on RCA Records. The original version of this tune featuring members of Fleetwood Mac.

      10. Sister Rosetta Tharpe...Jericho...from the Gospel Train LP. The Godmother of rock'n'roll was born 100 years ago this month.

Right around this time Joe Bonasia came onair to talk about his new record label, Nobody's Favourite Records, that will be releasing some compilation records. Then we played a song by Astoria, a band that Joe just happens to be singer/guitarist for.

      11. Astoria....Wake Up Sound...from their self titled debut CD.

      12. Torquemadas....Teenage Head...from the compilation LP Positive Vibrations. Not to be confused with the Flamin' Groovies tune of the same name. This set of NZ music goes out to my daughter Rox, who is presently in NZ.

      13. The Clean...Billy Two....from the compilation LP Beyond The Southern Cross. My fave tune by this NZ combo.

      14. Chris Knox....I Wanna Look Like Darcy Clay...from the Beat CD. Chris is a veteran of many many NZ combos.

      15. X....Slash Your Face...from X-Spurts, The 1977 Recordings LP on Ugly Pop Records. This is the Australian X, not to be confused with the US combo of the same name. We'll be having Simon Harvey from Ugly Pop Records on next week's show.

      16. X...Hey You.... as above.

      17. The Castor Troys....Come Hell Or High Water...from the brand new CD of the same name. Features former Londoner Chris Ledroit on guitar and vocals.

      18. Bent Wind....Going To The City...from their re-issue of Sussex on Ugly Pop Records. Late 60's Toronto psych/guitar noise.

      19. PF Commando...Rough Sound...from a 7" on Ugly Pop Records. Late 70's/early 80's punk from Sweden.

      20. Instrusions....WSIB...another demo from this Aylmer combo who we talked to earlier in the show.

      21. Delusionaires...The Worm Whispers...recent 7" on Hidden Volume Records. Florida combo on a Philly based record label.

      22. Demics....Heart Of The City....from a 1978 recording at the Cedar Lounge here in London. Big Thanx to Keith Wilson for digging this up.

      23. Demics...Let's Watch The News.... as above.

      24. Demics...Guts...as above.

      25. Demics...Cowboys Are Fags....as above.

      26. Demics...Factories... as above.

      27. Demics... Talks Cheap... as above.

      28. Demics....Posers... as above.

      29. Demics...Anarchy In The UK... as above.

      30. Demics... Blitzkrieg Bop... as above.

      31. Demics... The Kids Are Alright... as above.

      32. Demics... Janie Jones...as above.

      33. Demics... Queen Bitch....as above. I screwed up and played this song 2X.

      34. Demics... Mystery Dance... as above.

Big Thanx to Jonathan Wall and Joe Bonasia for taking time to talk about what they are doing! And a big thanx for the encouraging phone calls, emails and facebook messages.
Next week, we've got Simon Harvey on a phoner to talk about Ugly Pop Records and maybe a surprise guest! Also, next week is our last show prior to the London Record Show happening March 22 at Centennial Hall. I'll be at the CHRW table with some local stuff for sale.

    • Radio What Wave Playlist March 5/2015  The Last Pogo Jumps Again Part 5  London Scene Part 2

Back in the saddle after a few weeks off. This show is the continuing series on the documentary The Last Pogo Jumps Again and the second of the beginnings of the London Ontario punk/new wave scene.

      1. Forgotten Rebels...Hello Hello...from This Ain't Hollywood LP. Good song for a comeback and there's no way in hell Gary Glitter will get played on this show after his conviction this week. The Rebels played their first of many shows at The Cedar Lounge in the summer of 1980. And they are coming back to town April 4th, Call The Office.

      2. The Zellots...Object....recorded live at The Kent Hotel in Waterloo approx 1979.

      3. The Zellots...Boots.... as above.

      4. The Perks....Hollis Grand..from their only 7".

      5. NFG... At The Boot....recorded live approx 1978. No details available on this one, as bass player Bob Gliddon found it a couple years back.

      6. NFG...Media Junkie.... as above.

      7. NFG...Hijack Victim... as above. One of my all time fave songs from London Ontario Canada!

      8. The Sinners.... No Brains Required....from their only 7".

      9. The Sinners... Attitude Is Everything... as above.

      10. Crash 80's.... Waiting For The Heat....from their only 7". Anyone have any live or demo tapes of Crash 80's???  Please get in touch if you do.

      11. Hot House...With My Fire...from the Burn It Down LP. Protopunk or cheap heavy metal? They switched gears and moved in a more punk direction and played the Cedar Lounge quite often.

      12.  Generics....Oh Well...from a 1983 demo. Demics cover.

      13. Generics...I Wanted To Be A Punk By My Mummy Wouldn't Let Me....from Slippery's Club Hits, the cassette that came with What Wave 24.

      14. Generics...Thoughts In The Brunswick...from a 1983 demo.

      15. The Terminals....Spiderman....live recording 12/16/1983. Probably from The Victoria Tavern.

      16. The Terminals...License to Swill...as above and lovingly dedicated to the engineering students at Western University!

      17. The Hippies....Nuclear Disaster...from their only 7"

      18. Dead Rabbits....I Don't Care...recorded live 9/21/1980 at the Cedar Lounge.

      19. Dead Rabbits...Into The Future....as above.

      20. The Hippies....How You Gonna Live...from their only 7"

Thanx for putting up with my screwups on this, my first show back in a few weeks. I was extremely nervous doing this one and hopefully that didn't come across onair. And HUGE thanx for all the supportive phone calls, messages and emails. Radio WW listeners are the best!!!
Back on March 12th with a regular show...ie lots of new music and an interview with The Intrusions, an Aylmer based hardcore combo.

    • On Saturday March 14th from 1:00-3:00 PM EST, The Jeff of the Future Show will broadcast its first show from the brand new Studio X. With its large window view open to the public, nothing will be private. Gone are the days of nose pickin’, butt scratchin’ and air guitar. But there will still be loads of excellent garage-punk tunes. You can listen at 89.7 WITR-FM in Rochester, NY or streaming live at http://witr.rit.edu.

    • ...i THINKL , IN FACT i KNOW , THE BASSIST IS FINNISH ,BECAUSE HE TOLD ME ABOUT SEEING HANOI ROCKS , ONCE .

    • March 7, 2015 1:18 AM CST
    • I'M GLAD THE BOYS ARE PLAYING SWEDEN. THEY REALLY HAVE THEIR SHIT TOGETHER....

THE VIBRATORS IS ED , AND THE GUITAR PLAYER HAD PLAYED WITH THEM OFF AND ON (WHEN I FIRST SAW THEM , I THINK IN '90 or '92 , he played with them as a fourpiece .). and THE bASS PLAYER HAD BEEN WITH THEM AT LEAST ABOUT 15 YEARS. i WANT  TO SAY HE'S SWEDISH , BUT , THAT'S PROBAB;Y WRONG. I really miss Knox , though , he made the band.  Hopefully , you can still see Jerry Lee. I think he still tours Europe a bit....

    • March 6, 2015 11:51 AM CST
    • Apparently The Boys are coming to Sweden, so big thanks for letting me know they're still around, might have missed them otherwise. So excited I'll get to see them :)

John Battles: Thanks! Lots of great stuff.

And since I haven't seen The Vibrators at all, I would still go and see them if I could, they were such a great band once.

And since I live in Sweden I actually prefer the ones that tour western/northern Europe, for practical reasons :) Some of the US punk bands seem to come here, but not a lot of the sixties and fifties bands make it over here sadly.

I hope I get the chance to see Jerry Lee Lewis, that would be so cool. The mans a legend for a reason.

    • March 3, 2015 4:05 PM CST
    • FELIX , YOU'RE WELCOME. A lot of the old school UK Punk bands still tour the states , but , often ,there's only one or two original members  . Sometimes , that's OK , as with Eddie and The Hot Rods. Other times, like The Vibrators....They're  cool people , but , without Knox , I don't know. He was the personality of the band , their sole frontman. HE STILL WORKS WITH THEM , THO'.    I saw Slaughter and THE DOGS , TWICE. They bring the Rock , but , I had to miss them recently. There are two competing versions of Sham 69 , one is comprised entirely , or mostly ,of members of the post - Jimmy Pursey lineup. THE OTHER , NEWER , VERSION FEATURES PURSEY , AND i'M DRAWING  A BLANK ON THE GUITARIST'S NAME.....

Vice Squad has played teh US sporadically , as has Chelsea ....other bands like Penetration , Lurkers, etc. seem to be doing The UK and Western Europe , exclusively. Admittedly some of them are 'nt well known in The US.

tHE NEW STANDELLS LINEUP , i'VE SEEN TWICE ,AND i'VE TRIED TO BE OBJECTIVE....

Larry's singing has improved a great deal (I saw Dickie , Tony , and Larry in '99 , THEE Standells.) , he's coming into his own as a frontman (Yes , it was his group from the start  , but , you think of The Standells , you think of the late Dick Dodd.). You've got John Fleckenstein from the original (UNRECORDED) LOVE lineup , AND , IN MY OPINION ,   THE BEST STANDELLS LINEUP , THE "TRY IT" LP , AND HE'S A MONSTER BASS PLAYER AND A SUPER NICE GUY, and the drummer is good , holds things together, but , then you have this somewhat younger guy (Probably in his 40's) on guitar , and he employs all these 80's Metal "shred" techniques .   HE'S REALLY TRYING , HE SEEMS TO WANT TO PLEASE the audience , BUT, IT DOES'NT WORK.  They do the old songs , and even some of the new songs work.

They could be following in on The Sonics' recent success , but ,all due respect , they'd need to pull from their past , more.

As far as 50's acts who are still alive , and still doing good shows , Jerry Lee still kicks ass. He has off nights , still , I would'nt doubt it , but , I saw him about three years ago. It was the sixth time I'd seen him , and the BEST.

Then , you have Sleepy La Beef , Huelyn Duvall , Sonny Burgess , Joe Clay , Hayden Thompson , Art Adams , Gene Summers , Ray Campi , and others who are still around , but , probably retired. You might look up the Rockabilly Hall of Fame website to see who's playing out. A lot of these people , Sleepy EXCLUDED , ONLY PLAY OUT SPORADICALLY , BUT , YOU NEVER KNOW.

If you ever go to Memphis , though , look for Charlie Feathers' son , Bubba Feathers. One of the best Rockabilly sets I've ever seen.

*The Chocolate Watchband was on hiatus for several years. Then , they were scheduled to play in San Francisco , last April . My Girlfriend and I had tix , but , the show was cancelled with no explanation. Several months later , Mark Loomis , original Guitarist , passed away. He'd only played with the reformed group when he was available.   Whether or not they're planning to play out again , I could'nt say.

Thanks John! Thats a big bunch of great bands that I didn't know where active.

Apparently The Standells are active now. Looking for gigs it seems.
Also seems that The Stranglers pretty much never gave up. Samething for UK Subs.

If anyone know of any cool artists from the fifties that are active that would also be really cool. Like Wanda Jackson.
