Every 3 weeks I do a series of shows called The Eggman Collection which is a big potpourri of every song I've ever liked in my life...EVER! It's literally a huge mixing bowl full of songs written onto tiny pieces of paper. Over 15,000 songs that I've been compiling for the past 20-plus years of my life. Every song I've ever liked has gone into this bowl, and every three weeks I draw them out one-by-one and play them for you in no particular order. A mix of everything and anything I like, no matter what genre, era, style or year of release...if I like it, then I'll play it! No repeats of the same song ever! Don Arden, now there was a man who made money, for himself! Theres a really late Gene Vincent song called 'our souls' which GV repeats faster and faster at the end to sound like arse/assholes, he then can be clearly heard to say 'how was that Mr. Arden?'

The thing with the 'industry' is that people who are in it to make music are there because thats what they love and want to do, theyre not businessmen and have no interest in that side of it, leaving them open to the sharks!

According to Ian Maclagan's autobio circa 2005, the Small Faces have still not been paid any royalties to this day because they signed bad deals with Don Arden and Andrew Loog Oldham's management companies.

Read this on Facebook a while ago, certainly not the only artist to get screwed by the industry. Rod Stewart paid Ronnie Laines medical expenses cos he had no money, most of the major artists from the 60s fought for years to get any money. Even the stones were still fighting for money in to the 90s. Didnt it take until the 90s for the Small Faces to get any money as well? Too many more to mention.

I was alluding to the line in Mr. Chambers stating that "He did NOT squander his money on drugs",  and whether you want to call it squander or not Andre did use some of his earning on drugs.  Andre had a #9 on the r&b back in 1957 with Bacon Fat and wrote Shake A Tail Feather which has been covered by everbody and his dog. Andre has expressed for years that he has been under paid for his music especially that latter.

true, but this particular story isn't about not being frugal with your money, it's about artists with big success stories (chart hits like mr. chambers here) being railroaded by the music industry. hard to not be frugal with your money if you ain't got no money to be frugal with.

There are also stories of people like Bruce Springteen paying medical and living expenses for Mary Wells when she was battling oral cancer. The Rolling Stones paid to bury Howlin' Wolf's lead guitarist, Hubert Sumlin, I am sure there are more stories to count of this happening to musician we know and love.  I think a lot how some of these people are getting by.

I'm right there with y'all on both the Mummies and Fleshtones singles...but tho I do own a copy of les Sexareenos' Singles and Unreleased Material collection I still want all the actual Sexareenos vinyl singles...& while I'm at it, to compliment that quest, why not all the solo BBQ singles as well as all the King Khan & BBQ Show singles (of the latter, I think all I'm missing is the BBQ & Blacksnake single tho I do have shitty mp3s of this release on a harddrive somewheres)

Graham Day-- I love his music (Prisoners, Solar Flares, The gaolers, etc.) and also wish he would stop by the states one of these days. 

My god, so many. The Fleshtones and The Dirtbombs probably. Got all Te Dirtbombs' albums and a few 7"s, but they've put out an immense amount of singles. Always on the look out.

I saw Billy Gibbons play with Roky there 4 years ago. Great show.

So much good stuff going on Friday during the day. Also the Bloodshot Records party at the YardDog and the Suastex/Farmageddon show at Opal Divines (with T. Tex Edwards!)

Getting excited for SXSW. I will be at Roky Erickson's Ice Cream Social at Threadgill's on Friday 16th.  Wayne Kramer is also on the bill!  Roky usually has a surprise guest on stage with him - last year it was Billy Gibbons who joined him on 'You're Gonna Miss Me'.  Seeing Peter Case & Paul Collins on Saturday afternoon and Standells on Saturday night.  It's going to be fun.

uuh....he was talkin about NEW ORLEANS, which is definitely "part of the South." actually, TX is, too. part of the confederacy = part of the South, friend. #justsayin :)

HA HA HA, A lot of people don't consider Texas part of the South , anymore ! I lived there for 12 years , and found the Deep South a lot friendlier... New Orleans , of course , is ultra - touristy , now , but , it still  has it's charm. It's funny that they're trying to make Austin more tourist - friendly , when you can't even hail a cab. It'll probably be a long time until they announce the lineup for The Ponderosa Stomp. I thought it was kind of weak , last year , so , I did'nt go , but I've gone for several years in a row. There's nothing else like it.

It's a helluva drive (2000 miles, one way = ~1000$ in gas round trip) Maybe with a carpool and a couple rideshares, it could be affordable. Still, it sounds like it'll be an awesome time, and I've always wanted to check out Austin.

@ Battles - The Ponderosa Stomp sounds pretty rad too, if SXSW falls through. I've never been to New Orleans (or anywhere in the South, for that matter). Flying there and booking a hotel for a couple days would be far less expensive than trying to make it out to Austin for a week.

Also, Thee Oh Sees are NOT to be missed!  THEE BEST!

Of course when there are soooo any bands out there trying to scratch a living playing music, it really grates when successful musicians complain about the privelidged position they find themselves in and there are some great great tunes that comment on the situation of our time, and past times. Dead Kennedys, Pennywise, Propogandi, NOFX, Crass, Bad Religion...and so on and on and on...

But what about when those mega-artists do it, when they comment on other issues both within and outside of their music? When Bono and Sting open their mouth on stuff do we not just tend to think of them as patronising pricks? Is this fair? Do we tend to think of what they say as less valid because of how many gazillions they have in the bank or because they're from outside out chosen genre?
