    • I guess what I was trying to say is that if the sound is what you want, get the real thing rather than a stomp box.

However, the good thing about the stomp box is that you'll be able to dial down the effect as well as turn it on and off when you need. There's at least two other effects on there, distortion and radio that give a similar sound which might suit you better. Also, there's nothing to stop you from adding some reverb/delay on at the same time.

As Mr Occhio said, telephones also make nice mics and they also look cool, especially if you get a coily cable for it. Check out Bob Log III and Mika Miko for examples of that.

    • Well, the thing is Pete I am not sure if that is the sound I am after. I have a pretty good inkling it is, but if you read my post, I was asking, also, if anybody had any experience or links to tracks that utilized the effect so I could get a better idea. Pete said:

Check out the Boss VE-20 vocal foot pedal, you can do many different sounds with it. It has a distortion setting that I'm sure can create that effect if you play with it enough.

I just watched a youtube video, and apparantly there's a preset on the VE-20 that's called 'Harmonica', which is meant to mimic a Green Bullet. Pretty interesting, but if the green bullet sound is what you're after, just buy the mic!

Yeah. They are pretty dope for vocals. You can check out the BLACK EYED SNAKES. They used one alot.

    • green bullet is good if you are lookin for a heavy distorted voice,
but they have a lot of feedback and you cant have a clean voice.is expansive and there is not possibility to put it on a mic stand.
if you need a very cheap wild lo-fi mic you can try a telephone mic.
my friend chuckviolence(a good brazilian one man band) he make one whit the telephone tape capsule puttin on a bicycle lamp case.
you can do it whit 10 dollars.
      cheers from italy!

    • If you're gonna get kind of industrial, I'd add Cassandra Complex, Frontline Assembly, X Mal Deutschland, Front 242, Neon Judgement, Skinny Puppy, Cabaret Voltaire, etc. Good stuff. Other old goth includes UK Decay, Wasted Youth, Sex Gang Children (saw those 3 bands on the same bill once), old Dead or Alive (completely different before You Spin Me Round), Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Theatre of Hate, S Haters, Danse Society, Tubeway Army, Skeletal Family, etc etc etc. I fill in on the goth show occasionally and have a ton of that old stuff (I can send the OP playlists with pretty complete LP info if he wants). Some good newer bands are London After Midnight, December Sound, Dead Sea Surfers and Cruxshadows. Not sure why Kopper put the Hoodoo Gurus in a goth/dark feeling list but it's all subjective I guess. The screamin' Soul Preacher said:

Did anyone mention Einstürzende Neubauten ? Guess you should check their 80's stuff (even if some call it more indus than goth).
And what about Killing Joke first 2 lp and singles ?
Early Wall of Voodoo (Stan Ridgway period) should be tried too if you ain't afraid of mixing Suicide with country music !

About Bauhaus, I really loved them when I was a kid but I can't listen to them anymore...much too arty and Bowiesque to my dirty old ears...
About the intro of "Bela Lugosi's dead" picked up by The Dirtbombs in their "Kung-Fu" version, Jay Reatard did the same thing in "Blood visions" (the song).
About The Sisters of Mercy, if you ain't dead of too much laughing after listening to their "First and last and always" lp, you'd better try the first eps, especially the one with "Alice" and their cover of "1969". Those eps are also gathered in the "Some girls wander by mistake" cd. But, once again, you may laugh more than cry... which is quite a pity for a wannabe dark and romantic goth !

About the bands that deals with dark and horror themes, you can't forget the kings of Psychobilly : The Meteors !

At last, I would say better forget about all these not so great bands, who probably used to spend more time fixing their dark mascara and blood red lipstick than practicing witchcraft in spooky cemetaries under the full moon, and please check each and every stuff with Steve Pallow or Haunted George in !!!

    • Hmm....I always considered Jesus and Mary Chain more like shoegazer but their vocals were too mechanical. Probably that's the goth-y part.

    • Jesus and Mary Chain are pretty good. Also, Fuck Morrissey. I got tricked into going to a Smith's night at some stupid hipster bar where I live and it was absolutely horrible. Ruby Soleil said:

Check out Jesus and Mary Chain. Early Goth tended to be more melancholy with catchy melodies than outright depressing and this Goth band reflects that. Morrissey ruined it for everyone so I don't recommend the Smiths or the Cure (although I could argue that The Cure is not Goth, but I'll let that one go). The rise in the Smiths popularity is when I got out of the habit of listening and following Goth music/scene/subculture. Empathizing with the music you listen to is a different event than letting yourself dissolve into depression and self loathing. Worst thing I ever saw was a little Goth boy letting himself be led around by a little Goth girl (and no she was not cute), by a leash that was hooked to the spiked dog collar around his neck, at of all places Rockfest in KC. And Manson is not Goth, though labeled as such as is all Death Metal and Thrash now a days it seems, but it's really not in my opinion. Lazy journalists. Us Goth kids in my day were never that angry-passive aggressive and spiteful yes, but we'd never raise a hand against anyone other than ourselves. Still love the culture, what with the toys on the market and all and movies influenced by Goth, like Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas. You might also explore steampunk, very Goth in a brown sort of Victorian way, the way the Goths chose the black and purple Victorian style, but less focused on the human condition. Style is key to being Goth, but don't lose a job over it, nothing worse than having to squat as previously mentioned in the thread. But yeah, check out Jesus and Mary chain they are one of my favorite Goth bands next to Bauhaus and the Damned. Also check out Love and Rockets, not Goth per se, but you might like them.

It still holds up 20 years later (or more?).

    • I remember watching the dvd with my sister, who's a huge stones fan, myself being a huge Who fan. Despite my constant taunting and razzing, when the Who hit the screen she was blown away and admitted they were amazing and that the stones must've shitted themselves seeing them (which is what happened).

    • Ok, I've never seen it and I really don't like it when people assume that everybody here has seen and heard everything and know every little thing about culture. So far, most everybody here doesn't assume that and usually even asks if anybody's heard this or that or seen this or that. I'm sorry but you seem to have a habvit so far of thinking that EVERYBODY knows what you're talking about...like that Edward Elger comment. I don't know who the hell he is or was, but Benjamin was cool to get a wikipedia link going so now I know, but even he was like "is this the right guy?" C'mon! Reference your posts! • I love the "Owww!" at the beginning of The Oblivians "Pin Stripe Willie" Not sure which one of them sings that song as I can never tell Greg and Eric apart unless I'm actually watching them sing. Jack on the other hand sounds way diffrent than the later two.

    • haha, K-Dogg you have great tastes in movies, have you ever heard of or seen Whiteboyz (1999)? Straight out the corn fields of Iowa ...funny film, but the kind of film that leaves those certain fff'd up feelings jarring about when you are done watching it. Even more ridiculous the fact that this was done before enema-n hit the global scene. kopper said:

I highly recommend a movie called Hustle & Flow from 2005. That was written & directed by Craig Brewer who was also responsible for the cooler-than-expected $5 Cover MTV series about the Memphis music scene. Another of his movies that's really good but has nothing to do with rap is Black Snake Moan.

I also highly recommend CB4 and Fear of a Black Hat.

I totally agree with Ixnayray. The chart shit is just that; it's shit. But the kids keep buying into it and record companies like making money.
I like the early gangsta rap N.W.A., Ice T... A lot of people get offended by it but I think the rappers are just telling it like it is. I think the making of any good rapper though is the DJ sitting behind them. Kool Herc and Grand Master Flash were total musical revolutionaries and I think their attitude was totally punk; "fuck it this is how I'm doing it"

You have to remember that the term hip hop refers to the four corners as Hip Hoppers call it: Rappers, DJ's, dancers and Graph Artists. There's a great doco called Scratch which is mainly about DJing but sorta looks at the other three aspects of Hip Hop.

    • Well I guess that would take us into the "rock/rap" thing ala Limp Bizkit and ... errrrrr, other stuff that I can't really think of right now. I remember the Faith No More track "We Care A Lot", though musically I would'nt call any of that stuff Hip-Hop but that's just me.

I do remember buying the soundtrack to the movie Judgement Night. It was pretty cool actually. Rappers doing tracks with rock groups - Ice-T & Slayer, Cypress Hill & Pearl Jam, Boo-Yaa Tribe & Faith No More, De La Soul & Sonic Youth, House Of Pain & Helmet and Sir Mix-a-lot & Mudhoney! The movie sucked though.

I was always suspicious of that rock/rap stuff. You can just imagine all the studio exec's saying, "Well gee, our artists are middleclass white boys... but they are STREET!!! If we get 'em to curse and wear LA Raiders gear we could still tap into the rap world." Rubbing their grubby, corporate little hands together... KER-CHING!!!

    • I figured if he's touring the states for his book, people could just ask him themselves in person(that is if they decide to go see him). I guess I meant to say this thread is better for places he's not stopping at or is not going to be before July 19th.
