Haven't had a chance to see her yet, unfortunately.  She tours relentlessly, though, so it shouldn't be long. 

Shes's dangerous. I live in Chicago , and I have'nt heard anyone work a Blues like that , here ,  since Honeyboy Edwards died.

I seriously doubt that Reed or Cale knew about the Oz Velvet Underground (Whose version of "She Comes in Colors" appears on the Arthur Lee and Love cover songs collection on Music Maniac.) . It's like the UK Folk - Rock group called The Chocolate Watchband. As obscure as THE AMERICAN CWB WAS IN THEIR TIME , the English band were that much more unknown. If they did'nt have the same name as a now - accclaimed cult band , I doubt anyone would have heard of them at all , today. But , there was a law that said if two bands had the same name , the less - established of the two had to relinquish the rights to the name - So , the LA - based group , Nazz ,  became Alice Cooper , after learning Todd Rundgren's band , Nazz, had a record out , first. Arthur Lee had to give up the band name , Grass Roots , when he found out another band had a single out under that name , changing the band's name to Love. Hey , Alice and Arthur both came out ahead , in terms of which name was better for them.

 

Plus , with very few exceptions , the Aussie scene was so isolated from The US (Tho' maybe not quite as much from The UK.) , it's possible , if not probable , that the Velvets from Oz were about as familiar with The US Velvets as the latter was with the former......

I've heard of the Aussie band of the same name. Why didn't JOHN Cale sue them?

Chris , Could have been a German band....I've never heard it , but heard both sides were more Pop - oriented than the originals. But , they had songs like that , which other bands could have recorded at the time , and , at least , brought in some revenue.....Of course , The Yardbirds'
"Waiting" only tuned up on a bootleg , years later , making that version of "Run ,Run , Run" (and the flip?) the first officially released Velvets cover(s).

It's also funny to note , there was actually a band in Australia, at the same time , called The Velvet Underground.  Maybe they sang about scoring Tim Tams instead of Heroin (Tim Tams are chocolate- covered wafer cookies from OZ that could deep - six the Heroin trade , if they ever put 'em on the market , here....).

Hey , Ian. I don't know for sure , but , I saw The Sloths at The Ponderosa Stomp , and they did a song that Holly Beth Vincent wrote for Joey , which he'd planned to record , but , he passed away before he could. I FORGET THE TITLE , BUT , IT WAS A REALLY GOOD TUNE. Sorry I could'nt really answer your question. 

I'm a collector of unusual, off the beaten path Christmas music.  Can anyone recommend any cool bands or comps?  Generally my tastes run towards the R&B side of the Garagepunk spectrum but I'll check out anything as long as it's good!  I'm especially interested in new releases.  CDs, vinyl, downloads, it doesn't matter!

Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs , how could I forget ! A lot of Americans don't know Thorpe was huge in Australia , going from Garage /R'N'B TO ACTUALLY DECENT BOOGIE ROCK to brief popularity in the states with effects - laden psuedo - Psychedelic FM Rock in the Late 70'S.

i could come up with some more , if I looked at some comps........Great songs, but the names escape me.

Got a hold of the second Death release of demos etc, its as great as "For the whole world" what an amazing band

I love Black Flag, i saw the Ginn/Reyes outfit a few months back and it was much better than expected. However if you like Black Flag dont miss the Keith Morris/Steve Macdonald project OFF!!, they are probably currently the best live band in the world and sound like very early Black Flag 

That's the best reason to watch those Beach Movies....But , Boris Karloff , for one , had a CAMEO ( Bikini Beach , I think....). Buster Keaton , I think , hada cameo in another, even tho' they were both in "Ghost In The Invisible Bikini" , as I recall...But , a lot of those bands got to pretty much do one or two songs in their entirety. Too bad , Dick Dale seemed exclusively contracted to do lame vocal numbers. I WOULD HAVE BOUGHT A CHEAP vhs COPY OF TAPEHEADS IF i'D KNOWN ALL THOSE PEOPLEHAD CAMEOS...... I had NO IDEA  Stiv was in it....I only ever knew him to "ACT"IN  "POLYESTER " , in which he was great....I JUST FOUND A COPY OF "aMAZON Women on The Moon" ,I had no idea all thee people were in it.....

 

Antenna was showing "It's a Bikini World " with Sid Haig , the Animals , Pat and Lolly Vegas (I think?) , and The Castaways , and I'd just got  a new - old VCR , and was only able to hook it up properly to tape part of it. I'm pretty sure I still have a copy....somewhere.

 

Oh , yeah...."Beyond" is an all - time classic. Wink and you'll miss Pam Grier. I THINK"i'M cOMING hOME " was the best thing the Strawberry Alarm Clock ever did....But that whole soundtrack was genius.   Some of Russ Meyer's stars came out of Grade - Z Beach movies , too. Michael Blodgett and Lori Williams both appear in "A Swingin' Summer" with Raquel Welch , Gary lEWIS AND tHE pLAYBOYS

YBOYS (actually frat - rockin' , pre - fame.), A STILL - ROCKIN' rIGHTEOUS bROS , AND , i THINK, tHE RIP CHORDS. SHOT ON A LAKE IN Jersey or Connecticuit or somewhere , gotta love it.

 

But , the Beach Party Movies were like the Happy Hunting Ground for aging legends - kEATON , kARLOFF , Rathbone , Vincent Price , who eally was'nt very old , mid - 50's or something......

I was flipping channels over the summer & a local station was running all those Frankie & Annette Beach movies ... Wow! it was cameo central.  Dick Dale, Stevie Wonder, The Castaways and tons more.  Tapeheads (w/ John Cusak & Tim robbins) is filled w/ cameos ... Jello as an FBI agent, Mike Nesmith, Stiv Bators and more.  Highway 61 is another oddball cameo flick ... Jello & Tav Falco are a few I remember.

Lunch Wagon features Missing Persons.  And I figure you've seen Beyond The valley of the Dolls ... Strawberry Alarm Clock.

I was a little surprised by the 14 year figure too, I was thinking more around 8 or 9. That article makes it sound like the break could be long, but then this showed up on their website:

 

 

Seems odd they would even bother to make an announcement for just a few months break.
