    • Does anyone know anything about this band? They've got one song on Wanghead Records' 1987 comp "It Came from the Garage II" called "How Can I Miss You? (If You Won't Go Away)." Sounds like a dead ringer for The Cramps. I tried to Google and I can't find anything about them.

I'm attaching an MP3 of the song.

P.S. - You can download the comp (legally) here: http://archive.org/details/ItCameFromTheGarageIi

    • Yeah, that version of "Tough Lover" definitely sounds like it could have been recorded in the 50's. Here's another song in the same vein also sounding really authentic by Ray Collins Hot Club whom I got to see live just a month ago at the Hultsfreed Hayride weekender.

    • Not "beat," per se, but I'd have to say the most authentic band I've heard the past couple of years is Nick Curran and the Lowlifes, hands down.

    • Actually I don't know, but it has this surface texture that makes it look like it isn't made of wood. It looks like it wants to be cool ("oooh, black") but in fact is totally square. But still, no bad words against John Darnielle!

[Two minutes later] I've checked, and it seems to be a graphite guitar: http://www.rainsong.com/models/ws1000.asp

What's the special thing about them?

    • August 20, 2012 5:33 PM CDT
    • A few that seem obvious to me that haven't been mentioned, although not necessarily always in the '60s vein, are The Stranglers, Murder City Devils, and The (International) Noise Conspiracy. Also, The Bomboras have a prominent organ, but about 99% of their stuff is instrumental surf rock.

    • Cheap guitar, fuzz, 4 chords, a few wild notes and there you go, GRGPNK.

    • Download some drum samples or loops off the net and have fun building beats. For garagey stuff, it don't take much! I've wasted more time waiting for drummers to show up than I care to admit. Steve's surf drum samples worked perfect for my type of sour mash garage tunes.

On a similar note(and completely serious - disregard my joke above) - what are the best things to drum on for a home recording/bedroom 4 track setup that sound good and lo-fi(ala Jay Reatards bedroom recordings, etc)when you dont actually have drums and/or a drummer? Ive tried boxes and buckets, but if anyone knows of a better solution besides getting a drummer, lemme know. Thanx.

    • August 18, 2012 1:13 PM CDT
    • to the drumming question, a small cardboard box of old bolts and a suitcase sounds pretty cool with reverb!

    • August 18, 2012 3:03 AM CDT
    • They didn't use pedals, but a lot of garage bands used Reverb in the 60's..natural hall reverbs ( I know Link Wray recorded songs this way ) and Spring Reverb Units. I recently bought a Vibro Champ XD ( Tube Hybrid amp ) and I swear by it..I can get very decent overdriven tones on the tweed setting and the blackface clean settings are damn close..I've owned a Pro, Super and Twin Reverbs and it's %95 there. Most solid state/hybrid amps are rubbish, but I have found the Vox Pathfinder 15R & Vibro Champ XD to be solid amps for practise & recording basic demos.

      Bamalama Records said:

I am not a believer in distortion pedals - too friggin' metal and rawk. Overdrive your amp - that's the only distortion you need. Or loosen a tube like Link Wray. Slash your speaker cone with a razor blade (that's how Dave Davies did it and I swear by it but I have several amps) and it's not that expensive to put in a new cone.  Get an amp with tremolo or, most importantly, REVERB! DON'T GET A REVERB PEDAL!! Nothing sounds worse... A tremolo unit is ok if you can't get an amp with both but reverb pedals are the seed of Stan's nutsack. Nobody in the 50s or 60s were using pedals and you don't need 'em. Get a fuzz for solos or single note riffs but distortion pedals - bleh. People rely WAY too much in pedals these days (that and fucking modeling amps - LOSER) and they don't sound organic - they sound fake and sterile and shitty (and not in the way you want it to sound shitty). Cheap guitars aren't really necessary but they will work well. My main guitar these days is a Kent Americana.

Listen to records you like and learn the songs and then STEAL THEM! You'll learn everything you need to know. Lessons, books, etc are overrated and a waste of money.

    • My good buds in the band DUST FROM 1000 YRS. use a maracka as the beater on the kick. It gives it a great sound blend.
Great topic btw! Just this weekend I started my solo guitar vox and kick drum career. The whole time there was a bit of a rattle/vibration I felt would be cooler if a tambourine was in the mix somewhere.

    • I'm not an expert or anything, and I'm not familiar with those guys you mentioned, but the first thing that comes to mind is the "tambourine in there somewhere." My drummer puts a tambo on top of his hi-hat sometimes.

I think you're talking about a basic, stand-up rockabilly drum setup, no? Anyway, the basic recording technique is the same for any kind of kit. You put two mics on overhead boom stands, equidistant from the center of the kick, maybe a foot or so to either side of the kit, and about 6 or 7 feet high. Record these on separate tracks, and later, mix them with a spread, anywhere from 30/30 out, depending on what other instrumentation you have, and the sound you're after. The spread gives a sense of movement, or stereo.

Mic the snare and kick, and bring up these tracks in the mix to round out the drum sound. You can mic the top and bottom of the snare, and blend the two tracks for the sound you want. If you're just using one mic on the snare, mic the top. You'll get some bleed from the other drums in these mics, but it'll be mostly the drum you mic. Mic the kick from the front, not the back where the pedal is. My drummer's kick has a hole in the front head, about 6", I put the mic a few inches in front of that.

What kind of mics to use could fill up many pages of another thread, but use what you have, even stage mics can give a decent sound. Experiment with placement of the mics, it can make a big difference, as can the acoustics of the room you're in. In the mix, you'll probably want to EQ a lot of it, especially the kick. Keep the levels out of the red! You can always bring them up in the mix, but it's impossible to undo oversaturation.

Of course, there are other ways of doing it, but this is a common technique, and I could go on a lot more about finer points. The are lots of how-to vids on Youtube.

    • I'm looking towards setting up a basic one man drum setup for recording at home, similar to Ty Seagal, Dead Elvis and His One Man Grave, Mark Sultan etc

I'm basically think a snare and bass drum, both with individual foot pedals but I'm wondering if anyone has any idea how BBQ gets his sound, because it sounds like he's got a tamborine in there somewhere, I've seen him once before but it was a few years back and I can't seem to find close up pictures on the internet. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions for one band drumming or ideas on recording drums for someone who isn't a drummer I'm welcomed to hear anything.

NOTE: Due to an illness in my family which has me a little distracted at the moment, plus working 50-plus hours a week, I will be doing only Eggman Collection specials in the next couple of months until things slow down in the fall. I'm calling it "The Back-To-Back Eggman Collection End Of Summer Super Spectacular Extravaganza!"
The Eggman Collection is basically a big potpourri of every song I've ever liked in my life...EVER! It's literally a huge mixing bowl full of songs written onto tiny pieces of paper. Over 15,000 songs that I've been compiling for the past 20-plus years of my life. Every song I've ever liked has gone into this bowl, and every three weeks I draw them out one-by-one and play them for you in no particular order. A mix of everything and anything I like, no matter what genre, era, style or year of release...if I like it, then I'll play it! No repeats of the same song ever! Tune in tonight (Friday) at 10pm EST for the 119th installment of The Eggman Collection and hear bands and artists like: Gryphon, MAson, Bee Gees, Tudor Lodge, Funkadelic, October Country, The Tremeloes, The Dolphins, Rainbow Ffolly, Dirty Filthy Mud, The Lollipop Shoppe, The Savage Rose, Kaleidoscope, The Joint Effort, The New York Rock & Roll Ensemble, The Rock Garden, The Velvet Underground & Nico, The Moles, Guru Guru, Matching Mole, and many others!!!

    • Radio What Wave Playlist.....Aug 16/2012

For this particular show, we started one hour early, 5PM and played London Ontario combos from the late 70's up to about 1990. The reason, we're doing a big show on Oct 26th, called Underground Graphics London 1977 to 1990 which will be a visual display of the posters, zines, artwork etc from that era. This visual display will be at Forest City Gallery here in London. And for opening night, we've got a big bash planned featuring 4 local bands from the above era reuniting for the night; The Enemas, NFG, The Zellots and Uranus. It'll be an action packed night of rock'n'roll!  And if that isn't enough, we're bringing back our zine, What Wave for an all local issue that will be released at the opening of the show. We're also releasing a 90m cassette of almost all unreleased tunes from local bands from the 1977 to 1990 era. Some of those tunes may have been played in part 1 of the show.

      Part 1.....London Ontario bands

      1. NFG....Weekend Punx....recorded live in the late 70's/early 80's...no one is sure where it was recorded.

      2. UIC....Telephone...recorded live at Call The Office 3/16/85

      3. The Finks...Don't Bring Me Down....1987 demo

      4. Evil Hoodoos....Just Like Me....live recording, possibly from The Brunswick Hotel.

      5. B5 Blue...Lift Up Your Hood....live recording from The Brunswick Hotel.

      6. Sheep Look Up...Civil Disobedience...from a cassette they released in 1982.

      7. Radio 4...The Remedy...early 80's demo recorded by Chris Richards.

      8. The Zellots...Blades...1980 demo.

      9. The Generics....I Wanted To Be A Punk....1983 basement demo.

      10. Condo Christ....Patriotic Fever...demo

      11. The Terminals...Spiderman...from a retrospective CD called Violence As Usual.

      12. The Stoves...Can't Slow Down...recorded live at The Cedar Lounge 1979.

      15. Tuerto Loco....Nancy Sinatra...recorded live on Radio What Wave 5/12/11.

And that's the end of part 1....this portion of the show, should be archived for about 2 weeks at:http://www.chrwradio.ca/audio/by/title/out_to_hunch

Part 2....ELVIS That's The Way To Spell Success...our trib to Elvis who passed away 35 years ago on the day this show aired.

      16.Elvis...Heartbreak Hotel...live in Little Rock 5/16/56

      17. Elvis...Interview after the above show in Little Rock.

      18. Elvis...I'll Never Let You Go...

      19. Elvis...That's All Right.

20 Orion....Rockabilly Rebel...from the Rockabilly LP from 1980 on Sun Records. This guy sang, moved and kind of looked like Elvis, but for one thing. He wore a mask so you couldn't tell his real identity. But the chicks dug it, so Orion was able to have a career milking the dead Elvis schtick. He was killed in a botched robbery several years after retiring the act.

      21. Orion....Lover Please...from the 1979 LP. Reborn on Sun Records.

      22. Janice K....Hard Headed Woman...from a 1987 home demo. Janice K is from Nebraska and is one of the few female Elvis acts. She has the chops to back it up, as she saw Elvis live many times and was even a guest at one of the King's many parties. Janice K has been featured on many of the mainstream talk shows (Oprah, Inside Edition etc) the mainstream press (People magazine) and even several What Wave cassettes!

      23. Janice K...One Night...as above.

      24. El Vez...Hurarches Azules...from the Graciasland CD on SFTRI. The Mexican Elvis, and like Janice K has had lots of mainstream press. El Vez was formerly in a punk band that you probably know of, The Zeros.

      25. Boy From Nowhere....Burnin' Love...1987 demo from local rock'n'roll combo.

      26. Frank Ridsdale...Mystery Train...recorded live on Radio WW 10/16/10.

      27. Cowboy Project...All Shook Up...brand new local combo who could have members that are also in The Kards and/or Robbie Antone's Blues Machine.

      28. Cowboy Project...Jailhouse Rock...as above.

      29. Jane Doe...There's A Guy Works Down The Chipstore Swears He's Elvis...local combo from the mid 80's who released just this one 7".

      30. Peter Singh...Elvis I'm On The Phone...1982 7" on Albion Records in which Elvis comes on at the end and explains that he's not really dead.

      31. The Supreme Bagg Team...Crankin' With Elvis...from Mr Garager's Neighbourhood LP that we released in 1989 on OG Records.

      32. Deja Voodoo....Let Elvis Die...from It Came From Canada Volume 5, 1989 OG Records.

      33. Chris Houston...Baby Jesus Looks Like Elvis...from It Came From Canada Volume 3, 1988 OG Records. Chris was a former member of The Forgotten Rebels....

      34. Forgotten Rebels...Elvis Is Dead...from the In Love With The System LP on Star Records.

      35. Satan's Cheerleaders...Tribute To Elvis...from the Infinity CD on SFTRI. That's Vampira doing the double tracked vocals.

      36. Crawlspace...The Devil Talks In Tongues...from the In The Gospel Zone LP on Bona Fide Records 1988.

      37. Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper...(619) 239-KING...from the Root Hog or Die LP. I could not find a copy of Elvis Is Everywhere, their semi-hit!

      38. Gun Club...For The Love Of Ivy...from their debut, 1981's Fire Of Love with the immortal words; 'All Dressed Up Like An Elvis From Hell'.

      39. Janis Martin...My Boy Elvis...from the Wild Wild Young Woman compilation LP on Rounder Records.

      40. Wanda Jackson...closes the show talking about Elvis as we've run out of time once more.

Thanx for all the crazy phone calls, emails, facebook messages etc...this 2 parter was a blast to do!

The show is archived for a couple of weeks at:

Next show, Thursday Aug 23rd, 6PM EST is going to be an all female show to show some solidarity with the women of Pussy Riot who have been found guilty of 'hooliganism'.
