    • I just found out yesterday that the Flamin Groovies are going to be in town tomorrow night and I'm probably going to go see 'em. Just wondering if any of you have seen them on this tour and how the shows have been. Reviews & thoughts, please!

From the looks and sounds of a few of the videos I've found on YouTube, they sound pretty good...

    • I think GG was fascinating in himself. He didn't seem like an outgoing person offstage, his lyrics were mostly downright dumb and his music was mostly average in my opinion, but there's something genuinely angry and innocent in all the crazy shit he did. I love "Bite it You Scum", it sounds so sincere...

    • Hi! As a fan of The Birthday Party, The Scientists, Come, Captain beefheart, The Gun Club, and The Beasts of Bourbon, I'm often scanning for bands that share the unique quality of these bands (not exactly garage, swamp rock or blues, not goth, but dark, not generic specifically...), but I'm not great at fishing for bands I may like. Some example of bands like this from nowadays that I enjoy are The Slug Guts, The Movie Star Junkies or The Black Angels.

Anyone here with similar interests can recommend some bands that have that sort of 'unique' thing?

      Thank you, people!

Just dug this up, they are playing Brooklyn this month with The Woggles. It is times like this that I miss living in New York.

    • Wow I love The Real Kids! Great news. I really hope it's great. I saw them at Coney Island High in NYC when they started playing shows again, must have been late 90s/early oughts, and they were fantastic. Was supposed to see them again with The Lazy Cowgirls around the corner at The Continental not long after that but they cancelled the day of the show and then they just dropped off the map, if my memory serves me correctly (which it very well may not). Glad to hear John Felice is still at it. Big influence for me.

    • Saw this on John Schooley's wall on Fartbook:

THERE IS GONNA BE A NEW REAL KIDS ALBUM, EVERYBODY! David Woods was kind enough to send me this 4-song EP of cuts from the new record on absolutely bee-YOO-tiful YELLOW GOLD vinyl. With a sweet Ace of Hearts logo, like it was 1978 or something. Listening right now - pretty great. Side one has a rocker with "She Don't Take It" but I really dug "Fly Into the Mystery" - amazing version of a Modern Lovers song. Boston rock n' roll, people.

      Awesome.

    • I SAW THE GO - GETTERS , ONCE , CENTURIES AGO. THIS IS A GOOD VERSION , INSPIRED BY GENE VINCENT'S VERSION.......I have to go along with Miriam Linna , when she said , you only really need Gene Vincent and Rick Nelson's versions (Which was the blueprint for "We Ain't Got Nothin , Yet".) . There are other good ones , but the song's been done to death , buried , and dug back up to be done to death some more.........

Just remembered , I bought a couple of 45s from The Go - Getters , they did'nt know how much to ask for them , in US dOLLARS.       I THINK I GAVE 'EM $6. That was about what 45s were going for , from touring bands. Now , it's more like $10 !!

    • YEAH , The tragic thing is , so many people think that's all Mungo Jerry ever did , when they released a plethora of Rockabilly , Glam , Blues , and , of course , Skiffle gems. RAY DORSET AND MUNGO JERRY JUST recently played in Brooklyn with support from Chicago's White Mystery.

Huelyn Duvall   "Three Months To Kill".

      Trashmen  "Surfin' Bird" (Of course.)

Cliff Richard and The Shadows  "On The Beach".

Cramps "Bikini Girls With Machine Guns".

      The Bold "Gotta Get SOME".

      Cichlids "Lifeguard Dan".

      Surf Punks "My Beach".

      Al Casey "Surfin' Hootenanny"

Raspberries - Long , Hot Days (Not one of their best moments , but , it fits the bill.).

First Class - "Beach Baby" (C'mon , it's got everything. Plus , they were Germans , singing English phonetically.).

    • "In the Summer Time" by Mungo Jerry was the first to pop into my head.

Also "School is Out" by Gary "US" Bonds and Sam Cooke's version of "Summertime"

    • May 5, 2014 7:24 PM CDT
    • "ROCKAWAY BEACH'' , of course. Imagine my surprise when I went to New York for the first time , in 1984 , only to learn there IS such a place as Rockaway Beach. It was just like the song , down to the blasting out the Disco on the radio (on some muscleman's ginormous boom - box.) waiting for the too -slow bus ride . I hadn't been to the ocean in about 10 years , so , I had a great time.....

    • Good ones.    "Malibu Beach Nightmare" Hanoi Rocks.

"Big Boss Go - Go Party" Ron Haydock .

''I Live For The Sun"  Sunrays.

"Go , lil' Camaro Go"  Ramones , Neanderthals.

                            "Kuk"  Astronauts , Trashmen

''Do The Clam"  Elvis , Cramps

                             "Summertime"  Troggs

"In The Summertime" Mungo Jerry (Obvious , I know)

"Surfin' School" King Uszniewicz and his Usznewicztones (Far too obvious.)

    • In honor of our first day over 80 degrees today, I thought it would be good to start a thread on our favorite summertime songs! Songs about summer, girls (boys?), goin' to the beach, etc. What are yours?

    • Scott was playing with them , that late ? He'd already taken ill , by then. I know he briefly got behind the drumkit again , several months later , at some big outdoor show , which aired live on the internet. He , sadly , did not sound up to the task. I don't know how many gigs he still played after he got sick.

Well , Black Flag , I'm not surprised. Henry's badass routine was always so contrived. I'm not saying he's not very knowledgeable in the real fighting arts , and that he could'nt clobber me with both hands behind his back , using only his nose , but , I saw him , once , coming out of a 7-11 in '87.    His eyes flared up at me , like "I'M GONNA KILL YOU , MOTHERFUCKER !'',  before I even walked in the door . When he realized I knew who he was , he was actually very friendly.

But , Scott was the real deal , from Detroit.

P.S. - ALL NON - FANS OF BORING JAM BANDS WHOSE MUSIC NEVER GETS OFF THE GROUND , AVOID GREG GINN's Solo project.

    • Yeah, I've heard even the dudes from Black Flag were intimidated by him.  I don't know if that particular show has ever aired or not, but yeah, Austin City Limits is where I saw them.  That was 2012, I wanna say around September or something like that.

    • May 5, 2014 6:11 PM CDT
    • ....That's a TALL order , but, if you can find a drummer that playes like ROCK MOTHERFUCKIN' ACTION , then ,you've really got something. As I think I noted , I nearly met Scott , but , he was between holding court with friends and going back to join his family. Plus, he kinda scared the shit out of me.  He still looked like a baaaaaaaaad motherfucker , head to toe , which he still was.  Some of my friends worked with him , and became good friends of his , and they noted what a cool and truly unique individual he was.    The Stooges were on Austin City Limits? Has that aired? That's news to me......I saw them at the "Homecoming" concert in '03 in Clarkston , Michigan . Then , 4 or 5 years later ,they finally played Chicago , at The Congress , famous for it's atrocious acoustics. When iGGY WENT OUT IN THE CROWD , TOO , THEY DID'NT HAVE A SPOTLIGHT ON HIM. Hey , it's got acoustics just made for Mexican Wrestling , that's about it. Then , they played at The Riviera , with James Williamson back in the fold. In 2012 , they also played the Riot Fest , here , but with Larry Mullens playing in Scott's place. All these shows were great , though the Congress gig should have been somewhere else. SOME of us cared how it sounded , anyway......I also saw Scott , twice , with The Scott Morgan Band  , but , it was before they started getting back to Stooges/MC5 roots. They almost sounded like a Coutry Rock band  .

    • In the past, whenever someone asked me what I was looking for in a drummer, I'd always say, " Someone that sounds like the guy from the Stooges!" They've always been one of my favorite bands, and I was lucky enough to see Scott's last gig at Austin City Limits. It thoroughly bums me out that both of the Asheton brothers are gone.
