There was a band in the 70's , maybe early 80's , called The Children of The Night. They had a Dracula , a Frankenstein, a Wolfman , a Mummy and an Ygor.....They put an album out and even got their picture printed in Mad magazine. Have'nt heard a lick of their music , and I suspect it's nothing to write home about , but, they LOOKED cool. Eddie Angel (Los Straitjackets , Neanderthals.) once told me he was starting an all - monster band . I don't know if it ever got past the planning stage , but , knowing him , it would have been great.

The other day, I was exploring London and ended up at the V&A In Kensington. I coughed up £12 to go to the exhibition on British design from 1948-2012 and I even got to see the costumes of David Bowie, Brian Ferry & Brian Eno.  The workmanship is incredible on each of them and they still looked amazing, even today.

I also got to see the Factory Records early stuff there, which looks awesome today.  

Talking of hair metal, were there any bands who mixed it with 60's psychedelia, or power pop,  noise rock, punk or R&B?  

Do you play any of the stuff influenced by glam? Like early punk, post-punk, Britpop, new wave, etc? Perhaps asking for more obscure stuff shows you just can't win sometimes, even when it was obscure in the US.

Maybe , here in the states , where his music is virtually unknown (Save for the use of his one American hit , "Rock'n'Roll Pt. 2" , only better known today via it's appearance at sporting events . But ,  if you mentioned his name or the name of any of his better - known songs , the average U.S. sports fan would , most likely , draw a blank.) , he could embark on that U.S. tour he made tentative plans for , 40 years ago (He's performed a total of two songs in America.).....Maybe. All the controversy surrounding Gary Glitter in the last , roughly , 15 years , went under the radar in America , recieving very little coverage at all. He did appear on an episode of VH1's  "Where Are They Now?", before the internet porn charge , and the program dealt , briefly , with the fact that he'd been charged with , and acquited of , two charges of indecency with a minor. Outside of a cult following , Glitter remains so obscure , here , he would'nt rate a sidebar in a scandal sheet.

That out of the way ,    yes I'm a fan of Gary Glitter's music , but not of things he did , or is said to have done. I'm not pro - murder, either , but , I admire the work of Leadbelly , Joe Meek , Phil Spector (OK , the verdict's never going to be out , but....Gee , D'YA THINK?) , Pat Hare , and , maybe to a lesser extent , Taildragger. I don't condone woman beating , but , I still like Ike Turner and Brian Jones' music.....Bill Wyman usually gets lumped in with Gary Glitter on the now - synonymous topic of pedophilia , but he did have the girl's Mother's consent (So much so that her Mom hooked up with his Son !), Not saying that makes everything peachy keen, but he had'nt had a scandal in his whole career with The Rolling Stones , barring the "We piss anywhere" incident , and he was due for one. Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry did , or were accused of , everything short of selling secrets to The Russians during The Cold War. They're still great Artists.  And , as great Artists go , you could'nt argue with Chaplin or Picasso , both of whom married teenagers.  Several times.

Then , there's the simple fact that , back in Gary's day , a large number of Groupies , at least , in the states , were'nt even old enough to attend their Junior Prom. Who was complaining about that ?

Maybe there is no end - all solution , but , would it be the end of civilization if offenders were treated , psychologically? Still , even after serving jail time , Glitter seems to be in vast denial. Upon returning to Britain (And , soon , requesting permission to relocate to France , while authorities concurrently sought Roman Polanski's extradition from the same country , to stand trial , here.) , a Journalist asked him if he intended to get help for his problem. He was told , "No , because I have'nt done anything wrong". If he'd told the man it was'nt his business , it might not have made him appear delusional.

So , it still seems possible that this Twitter site is a hoax. And , even if it is'nt , I don't know how Glitter intends to pull off a comeback tour. Negative publicity , however , is still publicity.

New guy here.  I'm 34 and from Massachusetts.  Used to play guitar in a few punk bands around here.  Been trying to get back in to jammin, looking for the right people. I found the podcasts via Google, and figured I would join.   Pretty awesome place you got here.

I'm Gio, a 21 year old student in NYC. I was born in Lima, Peru and recently discovered the country's huge garage rock scene (Los Saicos, Los Yorks, etc). I've been into garage for a few years now, with some of my favorite bands being Reigning Sound, The Gories, Jay Reatard and The Remains (feel free to add me on Last.fm!).

I've been playing guitar for a while now and would love to start up a band if anyone in the NY/NJ area is interested. I also recently started a online magazine, which I'm trying to expand and create more content for, so check it out: Mr. Lee Magazine. 

I'm currently on vacation in Lima, but I look forward to posting more regularly and meeting some of you once I'm back home.

I've always been treated well by the club owner, but I always DJ at the same place and the owner's an awesome rock'n'roll fanatic. The crowds are cool unless they think my spot's part of the furniture. I've made a rule that drinks placed on the DJ table will be consumed by the DJ and that seems to have worked out well.

I know I'm talking too much , here, but , I remember , there was a theatre in Dallas that showed "Urgh!" at least twice. It was an event. They let people dance in front of the screen , and even "Stage dive'' off the small stage below the screen (About a 3 or four foot drop , HA HA) . Once , they showed it with "Stop Making Sense" , and , David Byrne (Who was living in Dallas at the time , temporarily.) made a guest appearance and actually gave a pretty cool talk , and was pretty funny. I was pretty tired of him , by then , but , he was entertaining.

It did'nt matter if you did'nt like everybody in that film , there was something for everybody.

 Oh , yeah , I saw Death of Samantha , once , but , that was in the very late 80's. I never associated them with the early days  of Cle Punk , but , maybe I'm missing something....

....I've seen the remake/remodel Rockets , Cheetah Chrome , Styrenes (With ex - Mirrors , Eels and Pagans) , David Thomas with Allen Ravenstein , Tony Maimone and (then) yet - to - join Pere Ubu , the late Jim Jones , and I even played in former Electric Eel , Brian McMahon's , backing band , Das Volt , but, somehow , I have never seen Pere Ubu. It was'nt personal. 

WHAT HAPPENED (i'M JUST NOW SEEING THIS , I REALIZE IT WAS WRITTEN FOUR YEARS AGO.) WAS , THAT U.S.TOUR WAS CANCELLED BECAUSE THE WIVES OF TWO MEMBERS OF THE PRETTY THINGS WERE EXTREMELY , ALMOST FATALLY , ILL , AND , UNDERSTANDABLY , THEY DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE THEIR WIVES ALONE. THEIR SUPER KILLER OPENING ACT , ARTHUR BROWN , ALSO OPTED NOT TO DO THE TOUR , BECAUSE HIS MULTI - INSTRUMENTALIST , ONE MAN BACKING BAND, CONTRACTED A VERY BAD STOMACH OR INTESTINAL INFECTION , AND BROWN WOULD NOT TOUR WITHOUT HIM.

THE WHOLE TOUR WAS CANCELLED , AT GREAT COST , FINANCIALLY. IT WAS , AND , PERHAPS , STILL IS , HOPED THAT IT WOULD BE RESCHEDULED AT A (MUCH) LATER DATE.

I SAW THE PRETTIES ON THE "RAGE BEFORE BEAUTY" TOUR (Ca. 1999?) , THEY KILLED. COVERING MATERIAL FROM THE FIRST TWO LPS , "S.F.SORROW" (It was the S.F. Sorrow lineup , barring Twink.) , and later , as well as new material. My friend saw the same tour in Seattle , and said it was just as good. I've also seen the Pretty Things Yardbirds Blues Band (Dick Taylor and Phil May from The Pretties , Jim McCarty from The Yardbirds , (The Late) Bill Hite from Canned Heat (Bob Hite's Brother.) , and Chicago Blues Guitarist , Studebaker John. They played in Chicago in '91 and '93. Both shows were great. The Pretty Things are playing , now , with a drastically altered lineup , but , it's hard to believe they could'nt still cut the mustard with Dick Taylor and Phil May  on board.

not in relation to facebook and getting booked, which appears to be the original moan of this thread ...  FB has helped me a lot getting into the local music scene through snowball method, it's the virtual word of mouth, and in return has helped the bands I go to see.

I moved down just over 3 years ago for a job and without a clue what was going on. A new friend suggested I go and see one specific band, I liked them on FB, hence get invited to their next gig where I found out about two other bands. Go home find their FB page and if I enjoyed the gig like them on FB, get invited to gigs etc. A lot of bands over here put on gigs mostly for fun, playing their songs and hanging out together, not for fame or money. As some of them would not exist for longer than a couple of years building a professional website would be waste of effort. They stay together, split up, reform and, as mentioned above FB helps with the whole DIY thing together with soundcloud or bandcamp where many of them promote/sell their EPs.

Alternatively, just have a personal page on FB (ie band is represented by one person rather than a band page) link this up to your proper band page and befriend all your fans/groupies on FB. They have the benefit of getting invited to gigs, receiving updates from a friend but you can still use your proper page for promotion.

I agree that FB is going down the drain but it still is a tool that you need to decide how you use it. If it's not for you, don't use it and stop moaning. Music was made before the internet took over.

PS, sorry, I may suffer from a bit from sleep deprivation at the moment but I just don't like moaners ;)
