Is it me or it a lot of the early heavy metal influenced by garage, like glam was?

    • Rumor had it that Bowie was going to follow up "Pin- Ups" with a collection of "Nuggets" covers from The US. It's possible.

I heard a later interview where he said "There were these great bands in America , that just did'nt GIVE a damn. Bands like The Seeds and The 13th Floor Elevators , and....THE JEFFERSON HANDKERCHIEF !!!!". HA HA. i WAS SURPRISED TO LEARN ROBERT PLANT IS SUCH A FAN OF THE WAILERS , ELEVATORS , MOBY GRAPE , LOVE , BLUE CHEER ,etc. Just because I don't like his music , does'nt mean I don't respect his taste.

    • No shit ! It would have been in his best interests to just stand down , and say , I've got a problem , I'm going to get help.

      BUT, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

Speaking of contrition , I apologize for my last message appearing a half - dozen times. I tried to delete it , but , no luck. I'll try again , later.

Getting back to the subject at hand , it's cool that all the recent Groovies' shows have been so well - recieved. I'm more of a Loney - era Groovies man , but , I like the oft - bootlegged , finally compiled properly , post - Kama Suta , pre Sire stuff , with Chris Wilson , that came out as "Slow Death " on Norton.

I LIKE SOME OF THE SIRE MATERIAL , TOO , BUT , NOT AS MUCH AS MOST PEOPLE.... The Flamin' Groovies , as most of you know , have been working on a revolving door policy for about 30 years. When I first interviewed Roy Loney , he told me the original five - piece were planning to start playing out again , but , after practicing once , they decided , amicably , to put that project on the backburner. Cyril was already playing with The Magic Christian , and in an acoustic act with Mike Wilhelm. Roy was still occasionally doing solo shows. Eventually , Cyril and Roy started playing out , together , backed by The A-Bones. That may be as close to the original Groovies as we'll get. I saw them twice , and they DESTROYED.....

Roy's cool with the latter day band playing out under The Groovies' name. He even joined them on stage recently , in San Francisco.

He even told me that if the original lineup did reform , he had no problem doing "Shake Some Action" , because people would want to hear it.

    • Oh yeah, Rob Ford would def have a place in Chicago/Illinois politics. He could run for governor -- he's got the crim skills!

    • November 16, 2013 2:50 AM CST
    • I ALREADY TOLD BLOODSHOT BILL TO DO IT. IT'S HIS COUNTRY THAT'S BEING PUT TO SHAME , NOT MIN E(NOT THAT WE DON'T HAVE OTHERS DOING THAT , HERE. WANTED TO LIKE EMMANUEL , BUT , SHEEE!!!) . WE KID AND JOKE ABOUT IT , BUT IT'S A FUCKED UP SITUATION , TO THE NTH DEGREE.  I did'nt know Rob  Ford , until recently , but , I could'nt name the mayor of Cleveland or Phoenix , EITHER .

iF LECKIE WANTS TO RUN , I SAY GOOD ON HIM. HOW MUCH WORSE CAN IT BE ?

"iF YOU SEE POSSIBILITIES , I'M LECKIE , VOTE FOR ME. IF YOU SEE POSSIBILITIES , THERE'S HOPE FOR YOU AND ME".

NARDWUAR FAKED HIS WAY INTO AN AUDIENCE WITH GORBACHEV AND (GERALD ) FORD. HOW MUCH HARDER WOULD IT BE TO GET A MICROPHONE IN FRONT OF THIS DENIAL - ADDLED PARTY BOY ( WHOM CHICAGO WOULD LOVE , BTW.).

    • "Songs The Lord Taught us" is definitely high up there with me , too. The Cramps were , as Lux said , one thing separate from this universe. It was Punk , but , it was something not of this world , too. They GOT it , that Rockabilly was the original Punk Rock music , and the wildness most Rockabilly bands lack today , they had , in spades.  Lux said that Spin magazine did a big feature on CBGB's , and name checked every band nown to have played in the early days , but conveniently snubbed The Cramps. He said he phoned them to ask , WTF ? They said "Oh , we had a meeting , and decided you were'nt really Punk , you were just WEIRD ! ", and he said , we did all these shows at CBGS' ( I forget , 150 or something.) and played once a month at Max's (When a lot of bands could not play both venues.) , we supported The Ramones , The Dead Boys , and , now someone's saying we're not Punk ?

My favorite Saints' album is "Eternally Yours". I LIKE THAT IT GOES AGAINST THE GRAIN.....But I like the first three albums , and the last two (that I KNOW OF.) , a return to the Punk sound.

I GUESS THE BIG THREE , TO A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE "THE CLASH" , "BOLLOCKS", and "Damned Damned Damned" . ALSO "IN THE CITY " BY THE JAM. You can say it was'nt Punk , but , it was very influential. sO WERE tHE sTRANGLERS' FIRST TWO ALBUMS , x- rAY sPEX'S lone album (Discounting the reunion CS.) . Then , there's Eater , The Lurkers , The Boys , SLF , EDDIE AND THE HOT RODS , Buzzcocks , Rezillos , Undertones , vIBRATORS, sLAUGHTER AND tHE doGS, etc.

SOME OF MY (AMERICAN) FAVORITES ARE - DICTATORS (GO GIRL CRAZY ) , FIRST FOUR RAMONES LPs , plus "It's Alive" , Heartbreakers (lamf , dtk.) , Suicide (1ST lp) , Dead Boys (Young , LOUD AND sNOTTY) , The Real Kids  FIRST TWO, and dammit , "DMZ" is better than you've been told , X - fIRST TWO (tHO' i'D ONLY CALL "aIN'T lOVE gRAND " BAD.) , pERE uBU (tHE mODERN dANCE) - yOU CAN SAY IT'S NOT pUNK , BUT , LIKE THE cRAMPS , THEY WERE WITHIN AND WITHOUT THE PUNK SCENE....

FAVORITE JOKE BANDS - THE DICKIES , THE REZILLOS (THO' NEITHER BAND IS JOKING WHEN IT COMES TIME TO PLAY.) , LOS PUNK ROCKERS ,

THE CICHLIDS (FROM FLORIDA. IRRESISTABLE BUBBLE GUM /PUNK HOOKS AND GREAT TASTE IN COVERS.)

    • Thanks , Melissa. I don't write this stuff to make myself look good. I THOUGHT THIS THREAD WOULD HAVE BEEN FLOODED , BY NOW , yes , but not to make myself feel better. As a GARAGE PUNK FAN , THE NEWS MADE ME FEEL LOUSY. We can only hope he's getting the best care available. Dick Dodd and The Standells were the state of the art mid-60's Garage band. The one most people think about when considering the genre. We've lost some of the true greats in the last few years......

Anyway, killer song!  You know, I have Volume 4 of this series on vinyl, but it's not the same album as "Part 4" (CD?) pictured above.  Weird...

    • i like.  I loved the movie title "The Weird Lovemakers' , so , I thought , if I ever started another band , I'd use that name. Of course , someone else beat me to the punch.            Years ago , I had "Brian Jones' Kids" MANY years before that other band.   Recently I thought of "The Empty Hearts". Probably been used already. We tried to start a band in college with , like , eight people , all from different backgrounds. I wanted to call it "THE MUSHROOMS THAT TURNED INTO PEOPLE". It did'nt get past the practice stage. We did have Patrick "Taz" Bentley , later with Reverend Horton Heat , signed on as Drummer.  When I'd sit in with THEE Shitty Beatles (That was before Wayne's World and all the bands that stole the name.) , and I'd been playing out as Elvis From Hell , we were called The Shitfaced Beatles from Hell. Horton Heat sat in with us once , and David Thomas from Pere Ubu walked in . From the word go , he hated it , but , was persuaded to stay. We began doing "Non Alignment Pact" by Pere Ubu. I never saw a man his size run so fast , since Gleason !   When Bloodshot Bill and I have performed together, in the past , I called it BLOODSHOT BATTLES OVERDRIVE. I have'nt seen him since the ban was lifted , hopefully there'll be a reunion performance.
