    • Me: Do you remember playing this place called The Hot Klub in Dallas in 1980 , and this guy named Bobby Soxx slashed your tires?

Hugh Cornwall: Maybe , not sure...

Me: Well , I thought you might want to know, he's dead , now.

Hugh: Oh. Did you play any part in his demise?

They were the nastiest, funniest, darkest, moodiest, weirdest, most glowering bunch of outsider pop stars ever. The most off-the-wall bnad in the whole punk rock canon- a brutal slab of angry, snarling punk psychedelia served up as three-minute slices of pure pop magic. This surly attitude was combined with killer tunes; their bad attitude and dark charisma was a neat extra. They talked and sang about aliens, karate, motorbikes, Yukio Mishima, Leon Trotsky, heroin, Nostradamus, rats, ravens, and alienation... This was no average band.

    • i have built a couple kits with verying degrees of success. some dissapointments maybe due to the kits not being that great component quality and some due to builder error.

the kits from BYOC look pretty nice, especially the Tone Bender and Fuzz Face kits with the premium trannies but the kits are almost at the pricepoint of a good finished pedal from a reputable builder.

if you have the time for tweeking around it is a lot of fun and rewarding.

i have a hard enough time sifting through all of the varieties finding the perfect fuzztone i like, let alone building it.

    • Has anyone built a fuzz from a kit. Id like to make one but want to make a good one. Any suggestions out there?

    • Melvins/Krampusnacht? Lucky duck! Thanks for pointing out Electric Wizard's Black Masses, haven't heard that one, but Dopethrone is a big favorite. Do you like Acid King? Looking for their best LP.

So digging Electric Wizard right now, Particularly the Dopethrone and Black Masses LPs. But hell, they are pretty much killer throughout. Black Sabbath always, and I once saw the Melvins do a live instrumental set in an arthouse cinema over a film about Krampusnacht. My ears were ringing for days, so epic.

    • I have tried one test release of mine through Bandcamp, and I really like that fans can have a FLAC for best sound quality. I still shake my head that so many people will settle for a crappy MP3 when they have a choice! ;)

But sill, a nice limited vinyl 45 beats everything, doesn't it? ;)

    • Radio What Wave Playlist Jan 17/2013

On this show, there were a few screwups due to technical issues and my usual pressing the wrong buttons....but it was all for fun!

      1. The Vindicators...Thinking Of Birds...from the Time Machine CD on Stomp Records from 1996. This is The Vindicators from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, not the French band of the same name. This song was also on the LP Mr Garager's Neighbourhood on OG Records from 1989, an LP we put out with OG.

      2. The Regulators...Sherry Share It...recorded live at The Polish Hall, London Ontario 11/2/79. Early London Ontario punk combo heavily influenced by The Velvet Underground.

      3. The Regulators...What's In The City...from their only 7" from 1980. I was supposed to play the other side of this one, but screwed up trying to get the turntables working.

      4. The Regulators...Brainless Wonder...from the cassette that comes with What Wave 24, the cassette is called Slippery's Club Hits. The title probably refers to me on this show.

      5. The Mystics...Wasting Time...from their self titled CD. Hamilton combo who will be playing at Kissin' The Carpet, Jan 25th at This Ain't Hollywood in Hamilton. An all garage party night.

      6. The Mystics...ESP...recorded live at This Ain't Hollywood 9/26/11.

      7. Pow Wows...Plastic Factory....from their LP, Nightmare Soda on Get Hip Records. Toronto combo who will also be playing Jan 25th at This Ain't Hollywood.

      8. Captain Beefheart....Plastic Factory...from his Safe As Milk LP and the original of the Pow Wows track.

      9. Magic Shadows...Sunburned...demo from this Hamilton combo who will be playing Jan 25th at This Ain't Hollywood.

      10. The Rosy Red...Cloudy Day...demo from this Brantford combo who will be playing Jan 25th at This Ain't Hollywood. So it'll be 4 bands playing for the all garage show called Kissin' The Carpet. And there will be a garage sale starting at 8PM, bands at 9PM. See ya there!

      11. 905's...Tension...from the Break Out CD. 905's play tonite at Mitzi's in Toronto.

      12. Marvelous Beauhunks...Kickin' Around...from their Do Not Resuscitate CD. They will also be playing with The 905's tonite!!

      13. catl...I'm Goin' Upside Your Head...from their very first cassette. catl are playing their last show with their present drummer on Sat night at The Horseshoe in Toronto, then taking a hiatus. If you can, you should check this show out as it'll be a Killer!!

      14. catl...A Pickup Killed My Ford...from their very first LP.

      15. catl...Working Man's Soul...recorded live at Call The Office 9/29/11.

      16. catl...Get Outta My Car...from their third LP, Soon This Will All Be Gone. A Hasil Adkins tune they used to dedicate to me when played live! They also covered another fave, The Gories.

      17. catl...Don't Drag Me Away...recorded live at Call The Office 3/16/12.

      18. catl...Cards...from their second LP, With The Lord For Cowards, You Will Find No Place. Such great LP names!!

19.T.H.E....Grilled Cheese...from their only demo. Local youngsters who are playing tomorrow night at Brennan's here in London.

      20. NFG...Cowboy Rock...from Slippery's Club Hits, the cassette that came with WW 24. NFG will be playing Jan 26th at Call The Office as part of the Ontario Independent Music Archive showcase happening that night. OIMA is a brand new project to create a database of original music in Ontario.

      21. Fucked Up....David Comes To Life...from the Hidden World CD. Fucked Up are at Call The Office tonite!

      22. The Reply....The Reply....from their brand new CD, Downtown Soul. Had to fade this one  out as hockey was about to air on the radio.

Thanx for the call-ins, emails, requests etc....next week we'll be doing a show called Canadian Garagepunk Sandwich. It'll be all Canadian garagepunk, the first 90m will be 80's to current, then Ryan takes over with his Freakout and brings you 60m of all 60's garagepunk!! This'll be a killer diller show, so be sure to tune in next week, Jan 24th!

    • Hey James, I came up in the international anarcho punk scene where the swastika & iron cross were forbidden, but as i grew up & got a better sense of what i wanted out of life, I really started getting into the more freeing & liberatory elements of Punk & anything, which includes the right to offend & upset! Also, they're just part of American juvenile delinquent culture which all erupted after WWII. Blue jeans, iron crosses, leather jackets, boots, striped shirts, long hair, Black culture, etc. Love it. Surfs up! The history & cross-generational elements are really important for what we're doing here.

    • January 18, 2013 2:34 PM CST

but the swastika and iron crosses are confusing me a little, guess you americans have more relaxed conditions about it than us from northen europe..

How does he actually attatch it though ? Just a simple fix of duct tape ? I've only seen him once and never got close enough to see how exactly it's seated.

Desperate twisters is right about BBQ. But if its for home recording and not live playing live I recommend just overdubbing the tambourine separate cuz sometimes I want tambourine on off beat instead, plus with the BBQ method the tamb can tend to get slightly off n really muck up your rhythm and since it is so high frequency it will be super obvious. Hey, mark sultan overdubs so I don't feel it breaks any rules. For an example of a tambourine being off the ENTIRE song check out kk @ BBQ's "love you so" from the s/t release. Awesome track but goddamn is that tambourine on its own rhythm!

    • There seems to be an underlying stream here that garage music should be confined solely to the 60's and 70's. the obvious golden age. Like all music from pop to punk it follows a formula and as the Village People say... 'You Can't Stop the Music' I feel the fact that some bands are shit then good then shit again is only to be human. How can old guys and grrrrls still feel the anger (apart from GG Allin) that they felt in their teens. Not possible. Life and experience take over. Thats wot makes the punk scene great. Like nature it adapts and we quite rightly should feel like the old farts at the gig as the kids who are affected by the Ty Segals, Jay Reatards, Thee Oh Sees, Kurt Viles of the world  et al, express themselves and speak the same teenage bollox and shit that we did 20, 40, 60 years ago. Come on. The Chesterfield Kings haven't been relevant for years. The Sonics should keep their slippers on, and the angry young Them, now open supermarkets and gala's. Everything in its place and everything of its time. I'm not the same furious 18 year old i was 25 years ago.... THANK FUCK!!! haha

    •  I think what's happened , in the past , is Rev. Horton Heat's fans (Not all of 'em. There's a changing of the guard every so often.) , they want to live out this vicarious fantasy of being "Badass" , and Jim (The REV) has written songs to (Perhaps unconsciously) pander to that element. Jim Heath is a very old friend of mine , and I understand some of the criticism , and even positive press that misses the point ,that's been heaped upon him since maybe his third album. Jim is not a "Badass". Jim is a sharp cat who got the Hell out of Dallas and hit the road , when all his peers , barring the briefly famous New Bohemians and MC 900 Ft. Jesus , stayed in Deep Ellum to watch Babylon fall. As a lyricist , Jim can be witty , clever , and hilarious , but some of his best songs were never released , or haveonly turned up , recently. "Laffin' and Cryin'"is full of great Country and Rockabilly lyrical witticisms. It's a real return to form. bUT ,  i'M NOT OUT TOCONVERT ANYONE . He's had his ups and downs , but the last  few albums have been pretty strong.

Some pre - Henry Black Flag I like OK , and "TV Party " , I always thought was hilarious , tho' sadly accurate. "Rise Above"was the only other song on that album I nearly liked , but, I'm with you on that one. I'd rather listen to "Los Angeles" than "Damaged". Partly , because I CAN listen to it.

I hear that. There are a handful of 80s garage bands that I dig (I actually kind of like the Fuzztones, but it depends on the track), but I think 90s Mudhoney/Mummies/etc. stuff kicked it off again.

I personally can't stand Childish's voice. I can't get into it at all. Same with Reverend Horton Heat's lyrics - almost destroys everything good.

I don't really get the appeal of Rollins Black Flag. TV Party is fun and Rise Above is classic but past that, most of Damaged bores the crap out of me.

Can't stand the Fuzztones or Chesterfield Kings, in fact most 80s 'garage bands' just make me cringe. Didn't like new stuff 'til the Mummies/Gories for the most part.

Oh, and John, I'm with ya about the Childish thang. You could prolly make about 4 compilation LPs of related stuff, but jeez, enuff!

    • Yeah , exactly. I'm not saying everything Childish did was shit , but , he was the "Garage " act that people who know nothing about this music gravitated toward in the 90's , in particular. A couple of carefully curated comps , like the one Sub Pop did , might cast him in a better light , but he did more records than Frank Zappa 20 years ago.

Chesterfield Kings , I liked to a point. They were always inconsistent , live. They could be great, or terrible. I never bought any of their records , except a bootleg from the first tour i saw them on , in '88.      Fuzztones , I still like. Maybe not everything , but "Salt For Zombies" was probably the best thing they ever did. It's never been cool to like The Fuzztones , which kind of makes me like them , more. There's very GOOD FOOTAGE On YOU tUBE  of their recent gig in Italy.   I kind of felt I was being put on with The Mummies , tho' I can take a joke. People take them seriously , now.   When I saw The Gories , in 1990 , opening for The Gibson Bros. , I was the only person standing in front of the stage . Everyone else was in the rear of the club.... I knew they were on to something , but their legend loomed larger in death. Now that they have reformed , they're playing to hundreds of people a throw, many too young to have seen them the first time around. And , they were kind enough to ask me to open for them , two years ago. I sort of felt like they must have , in 1990 , but , WE WERE ALL THERE TO HAVE FUN. There's still this innocence about The Gories. They are not Rock Stars , and they do not have a master plan. "It's Rock'n'Roll , and the message is DO IT ! TO IT !".
