    • Great to see this discussion, which I started 2 years ago, revived. It's a Christmas miracle!

Eddie, I'm going to have to check out out your blog -- as well as those other links folks have posted here.

Spike, I love The Shitbirds' song. I used it in my latest podcast.

And speaking of shameless self promotion. If you haven't already, check out my latest Xmas podcast

      Play it here:

      Merry Christmas everyone!

    • i like The Shitbirds - Christmas is Coming and the Cannibals - Christmas Rock n Roll,

they're not a garage band but The Wildhearts did a version of White Christmas way back that ended up sounding pretty Garage punk.

This week I made my podcast a Christmas special and played loads of good Christmas songs, the above included and a few of the others people have mentioned like Black Lips and Detroit Junior, I hope you'll check it out :) *shameless plug*

    • The Reigning Sound xmas track "If Christmas Can't Bring You Home" is a good sad one.

Ronnie Spector is always good 'round this time of year, too.

And the Ramones "Merry Christmas I Don't Want to Fight"!

And, of course, hot off the presses: lo-fi garage rumble from (my own band)

Dear Hearts "The Only Thing I Get for Christmas is Blue" (here!)

Sorry, sorry, shameless, I know--but Christmas is almost over! And the song is free :)

    • I've been collecting punk, garage, glam-rock, oi, and new-wave christmas records for quite some time. This year my collection surpassed 300 records, and my research has given me a total of over 500 that exist (so far!) Needless to say I'm a xmas record fanatic. I post them up on my site for all to hear. I'm just getting started but there will be lots more coming every month. Please check it out and if you like it, post links to it and tell others all about it.

As far as my favorites for 2010, check out

      King Salami & The Cumberland 3 - Xmas a go go 7"

Shannon & The Clams - Ruin Christmas 7"

      really great records!

    • Los Straitjackets have picked up on the Ventures Christmas album idea (start off with a classic surf song and go into the melody of a Christmas carol) and have a full length and an EP in that sytle.  Many "normal" people can tolerate these.

    • I'm not as adventurous as many Captain Beefheart fans but Safe As Milk and the early A & M recordings really impressed me. "Electricity", though, is probably as far as I can go with his stuff.  Still sad that he passed away.

    • "You were afraid you`d be the devils red wife / But it`s alright God dug yer dance / 'N would have you young `n in his harum ..."  My Human Gets Me Blues

      One of my favorites.  R.I.P.

    • Art student rock...that's a good one.  I'm gonna use that to describe someone like No-Bunny.  Fun for some but I don't see what's so great about it.

Until today I had never heard of scion, nor would I have thought that it's a car brand. So I learned at least something from that documentary. Fred and Tody Cole are great as always, and thanks to the Spits there is  a 2nd good band included. Furthermore I got the impression that jay retard was a total idiot, just like the guy from the smith westeners and that what some people call garage I'd call art-student rock. But it could be worse: UK Garage Music

    • If you're talking about that Bomp Record, Sin-derella!, that wasn't the Sonics.  That was Greg Shaw asking Gerry Roslie if he could sing some demos and somehow he agreed.  The band was called the Invaders but in typical Shaw like fashion, he thought he could cash in on the Sonics name.  Roslie didn't even know that he was taking his picture with the band on the recordings or at least didn't know that the picture was going to be on the back of a record.

Yeah, didn't they attempt this at some point in the '70s or early '80s, too? I remember hearing something like that back around 15 years ago and thinking it was pretty bad (compared to their early stuff).

BTW, Bonzo, the Sonics have played some festivals in the past couple years, both in the US and Europe. But I think they're done...

Sounds a lot like hard rock to me. Not bad or anything, just not The Sonics at all.

    • I'm organizing a snail mail mix-TAPE swap (not a burned cd swap!) Its open to anyone who wants to join. I'm giving people until the 27th to submit their email to me. After that I'll randomly pair up each email and everyone can exchange their mailing addresses to their partner in private.

So if making a cool punk/garage rock mix-tape and sending it to a random stranger sounds like fun, just reply to this posting with your email. or you can send me a message at esalerno85@gmail.com. Thanks.

    • Haha, hey man, be easy!

Can't you take a joke? I wasn't reffering to your dislike, I've no idea why I wouldn't be cool with that. I don't watch a lot of these shows either, so... I only used it as a opportunity to talk about my own crap there.

Oh, the innernet, never fails to bring plenty of misunderstanding.

And that the sensor of the protestors has fallen on this song, is clearly a sign that 200X marks the year of the return of the old gods ...of ROCK'N'ROLL.

Every other explaination is just worldly BS. Their ways are many. Listen and get blown away.

    • Don't get me wrong, I've got nothing against people who like these shows. I just have something against people who have something against ME not liking these shows!

I think the X Factor guy deserves the No. 1 [and he did get it by the way]. I have more respect for someone who actually likes him than for someone who buys Surfin' Bird because they're a sheep and they were told to buy it. Simple as that. So well done Matt Cardle, or whatever your fucking name is. Now go and make Simon Cowell a shit load of coke money!!

    • I hate Family Guy, as for the Sufin Bird, it beats the hell out of Rage Against the Machine but it's the same dumb stunt at the end of the day. I mean so what the X Factor winner doesn't get its number one, she/he was never going to be the winner in the game anyway, that would be the record label.

Seeing as it's always majors playing this game, they are in a win win situation where X Factor fans are met with a challenge to buy this crud to get it to number one.

I sound really miserable here but I swear that really isn't so. And considering the charities involved and that the song's good I'm rooting for it.

"Surfin' Bird" storms the British charts for Christmas!

The Trashmen's immortal rock 'n' roll classic "Surfin' Bird" continues to demonstrate its timeless appeal this holiday season.  The beloved 1963 garage-surf anthem is currently at the center of a successful grass-roots campaign in Britain to return the 47-year-old song to the upper reaches of the pop charts.

This holiday season, a cadre of British rock 'n' roll fanatics—represented by a Facebook group (http://www.facebook.com/birdbirdbirdistheword) that boasts over 620,000 members—has mounted an audacious campaign that has already pushed the song to the Number Three spot on the U.K. charts, alongside the likes of the Black Eyed Peas and Rihanna.  The effort, originally launched by "Birdman Jack," has achieved this unprecedented feat by encouraging its members to purchase the song.

In a recent statement, the group explained that the campaign represents a concerted effort to strike a blow for real music, and to wrest the U.K. chart spotlight back from the domination of lightweight manufactured pop, as exemplified by Simon Cowell's wildly successful TV show X Factor.  "Our mission," the group explains, "is to continue the success of last year's 'Rage Against The Machine' Facebook campaign, which snatched the Christmas Number One spot from X-Factor.  The reason behind this campaign is to further prevent the domination of manufactured music, and to allow something truly great to take the limelight.  We are quickly closing the gap on the Number One spot, and we won't stop until everybody knows that the bird is the word!"

As part of the effort, the group is also supporting several charities and is asking members to make donations to these worthy causes, including Shelter, PinkRibbon, British Heart Foundation, Childline and the wildlife preservation organization the RSPB.  The RSPB, which has long worked to protect the welfare of actual birds, has produced a new video to help promote the "Surfin' Bird" chart campaign (http://www.rspb.org.uk/news/details.aspx?id=266053).

The Trashmen were already regional heroes on the Minnesota teen scene when they released "Surfin' Bird" as their debut single in late 1963.  The song brilliantly encapsulated the primitive, uninhibited abandon of the quartet's uniquely primitive take on the surf-music sound.  In the early months of 1964, as America was in the grip of the early stages of Beatlemania, the Bird ascended to the Number Four spot on the Billboard pop singles chart, as well as becoming a smash in such far-flung locales as Australia, Sweden, Mexico and Venezuela.

In the decades since, "Surfin' Bird" has remained an enduring pop-culture touchstone, appearing in numerous movies, TV shows and commercials, and inspiring cover versions by the Ramones, the Cramps and countless other bands.  Most recently, the Bird reentered the mainstream consciousness when the animated TV sitcom The Family Guy built an entire episode around protagonist Peter Griffin's obsession with the song.  Meanwhile, the Trashmen—still anchored by original members Tony Andreason, Dal Winslow and Bob Reed—continue to perform for rabid, ecstatic audiences in America and overseas.

The Trashmen's vintage catalogue remains a mainstay of Sundazed Music, which has released multiple packages of the band's original recordings.  In addition to the label’s recently-released 7" vinyl single pairing "Surfin' Bird" with its original b-side "King of the Surf," the song is also featured on Sundazed's reissue of the original Surfin' Bird album on both CD and vinyl LP, as well as Tube City! The Best of the Trashmen and the exhaustive four-CD box set Bird Call! The Twin City Stomp of the Trashmen.

    • Thought I'd toss my name into this discussion as well! I sing/play guitar (and sometimes sing/guitar/drums all at once, haha) in a two-piece called Dear Hearts. It's a mix of noisy garage stuff, old timey country, and, when we can find 'em, some sweet Stax horns. It's messy and fun, like rock'n'roll should be :) Check us out online:http://www.facebook.com/pages/Dear-Hearts/162623953770636 This is my old go-go-garage-rockin' girl group Magic City (www.myspace.com/magiccity) PS Below is our new xmas song "The Only Thing I Get for Christmas is Blue." Just a rough take, but you get the idea...
