    • Hey there,

I'm trying to record guitar using GarageBand, for a recording project where the bass player and drummer live in different countries. How do we sync up our parts? Do I have to use a metronome and if so, how is this done? Do I try to sync each downstroke to the beat of the metronome? 'Cos I tried it and it sounded kind of mechanical, not in a good way.

Also - anyone used the built-in guitar amps on GarageBand? Which amp/setting is best for a classic first-Ramones-album guitar sound?

    • Show #353: "All Requests Show #2"

Every 3 weeks I leave an open slot to do random themes and whatnot. This week is my official Christmas Show, a gift to all my listeners! I am letting YOU choose the playlist! I've received a bunch of awesome requests in the past week and tonight I'll be playing a good majority of them. I will also be open to phone requests, but just to warn you...I'll have to resort to using the WSCA library, which isn't as diverse as my personal collection (so I may not be able to fulfill your requests via phone). This is why I asked all my listeners to send their requests prior to tonight's live show. So, tune in tonight and hear the songs you chose by bands and artists like: The Mahavishnu Orchestra, The Factory, Etta James, Tintern Abbey, Joni Mitchell, The Music Machine, Simon & Garfunkel, Bee Gees, July, De Maskers, The Attack, Cat Stevens, Scott Walker, Death, King Crimson, Stray, The Monks, Roy Buchanan, The Turtles, The Seeds, The Dave Clark Five, Wilkinson Tri-Cycle, Rush and many many others!!

    • Playlist Dec 15/2011

Ok, this show was supposed to be a live to air with Weirdonia, a real cool 2 piece combo from Wheatley Ontario. Things started off great, the band showed up right on time, the 2 sound engineers (Dennis and Casey) were both here on time and it looked like everything was going to go great! Weirdonia had a set list all planned out and were getting all psyched up to blow down the walls. Then Preston's synthesizer decided not to work, no big deal, just change the setlist a bit and we'll carry on. Soundcheck sounded really good and everything was ready to go by around 7:30. Weirdonia kicked it in for their first song and it sounded amazing in the control booth. Then suddenly CHRW Manager Grant comes flying in and says 'you've gotta stop them, there's an exam going on directly below us and they've complained about the noise.' At first i figured he was just kidding, but then he said 'they were supposed to send us a schedule of any exams going on downstairs and they didn't but we've gotta stop it anyways.' Well, that put an end to that live to air, just about 1 and a half songs into it....lots of apologies from Grant and myself to the band. Luckily it was Professor Mike Atkinson who was running the exam and he actually came upstairs to say sorry that we had to stop as he was digging it!! Shit happens!
So we did a way longer than usual interview with Weirdonia and played several of their songs...all available when you do a search for Weirdonia as they are the only band with that name! And i also forgot to ask them about their appearances in the last 2 issues of Bananas zine outta NYC which is available locally at Grooves Records.

      1. Black Holes...Miss Pearl...from the live at The Brunswick CD as guitarist Tom Hilborn has an art show at Call The Office on saturday night and the Black Holes will be playing.

      2. Pack AD....Cobra Matte...recorded live at Call The Office 10/7/11 and they are in town tonight at APK.

      3. Pack AD...Hear Me Out...from their latest LP Unpersons.

      4. The Standstills...Blues Radio...from The Human Element CD and they are opening for Pack AD tonight. And they are releasing their first 7" tonight as well!

      5. Osterberg...WIthout You...from their L'Osterberg CD and they are playing with The Black Holes on Saturday night at Call The Office.

      6. Lost Patrol...Blues Theme...from their only LP and the beginning of our Windsor Ontario set as Weirdonia are from outside Windsor and they play there a fair bit. Lost Patrol were featured in many issues of What Wave as well as appearing on several of the cassette compilations and even on Mr Garager's Neighbourhood, the LP we released on OG Records.

      7. Dry Heaves...Portable...from their Rave Up LP Shoot Yourself!. Late 70's Windsor area combo who played at least once here in London at The Cedar Lounge.

      8. The Spys...Underground...from their only 7" and also from The Windsor area. Late 70's/early 80's combo who later became The Nelsons and played at The Cedar Lounge here in London many times.

      9. Weirdonia...How About I Slap Your....beginning of the live to air show.

      10. Weirdonia...Dutchman On The Wall...ending of the live to air show.

      11. The Hook Up...65 Has No Blues...from the Call Up The Devil CD. And, The Hook Up are playing in Windsor Ontario on saturday night.

      12. Weirdonia...1960's Antique Clock...from a download.

      13. Weirdonia...I Walk The Line...from a download.

      14. The Leather Uppers...She Digs Death...from the Pantsuit Party 7". 2 piece from Toronto who remind me of Weirdonia for some bizarre reason.

      15. Leather Uppers...Plastic Hassle...as above.

      16. Leather Uppers...Carne Mysterioso...from the split 7" with Icky Boyfriends.

      17. Leather Uppers...Senorita...as above.

      18. Weirdonia...Masked Boys Choir...from a download.

      19. Bobby Barnett...Drink Canada Dry...from the Country Trash CD and there's a line about seeing Detroit in the rear view mirror while driving out of Windsor. Pure country trash.

      20. Vicious Cycles...I Gotta Girl....from the Noises From The Hideout compilation from the garagepunk hideout which Weirdonia is a proud member.

      21. Weirdonia...Green Tables...from a download.

      22. The Diodes...Catwalker...from the Action/Reaction CD on Bongobeat Records.

      23. The Diodes...Time Damage...recorded live at Call The Office 11/18/11. I may have played more than one song from this live show as i was scrambling as the next DJ didn't show up....first time this has ever happened to me in over 8 years onair!!!

HUGE thanx to Weirdonia for coming onair and next time we'll do it proper! Check them out if you get a chance as they are a lot of fun live and recorded.

Next week we'll be spinning all Christmas songs....not your usual Christmas fare as long time listeners will know and we'll have The Legendary Stardust Cowboy calling in with his annual Christmas message.

    • Been a looong time since I went clubbing, but I nominate Emo's in Austin, TX. Killer Jukebox, 2  stages, and even the bouncers are nice. It's also close to a great watering hole, Casino El Camino.

Haven't been to Europe, but I always hear nice things about Spain and the Netherlands, re band treatment, rabid fans, and cool scenes.

    • I have a good one.  Remember "Do You Love Me?" by the Contours?  The line that says, "I can mash potato," well, I seriously thought the singer sang "I'm a masturbator" when I first heard that song:)  I wondered to myself at the time, "How did they get away with releasing that song in 1962?"  I wonder if Johnny Thunders ever thought to sing it that way.

    • December 16, 2011 1:51 PM CST
    • That's a classic ! I knew he was saying "Peanuts" , he HAD to be...but , it always sounded like "I'll bet my penis to a candy bar...". Good early example. Someone asked me which song did I think had the first F-Bomb. I was'nt sure , but , "Shave 'em Dry" (Early 30'S) is posilutely FILTHY.

    • Maybe you've heard of , or seen , the book "'Scuse Me While I Kiss This Guy" , about "Frequently" misheard lyrics , when maybe a half - dozen or so entries were ever heard that way by anyone other than the compilers , such as :

"There's a bathroom on the right" ("There's a bad moon on the rise").

When I was in Junior High , "Miss You" was a big deal , even though I was about the only kid in my school who even liked The Stones.

"I've been haulin' ass along" -  ("I've Been Holdin' out so long") ("ASS" was still a big deal in the 70's).

The band , Le Roux, were briefly popular with "I'm Addicted".
      "I 'm a dickhead , baby"   ( "I'm addicted , baby."). There's no way they did'nt plan it that way.

And , one could write a book on the Ramones (I already wrote an article...).

"They're formin' in a straight ine , they're goin' to the car wash."  ("They're formin' in a straight line , they're goin' thru a tight line." )   ("Blitzkrieg Bop.").

"Shot in Vietnam , I'm doin' fine"   ("Shock treatment , I'm doing fine.") ("Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment").

"I Can't Give You Anything" ("You think I'm kind of cute , but , who's gonna bring home the ludes ?" ("...But , who'e gonna bring home the loot ?")  .

"Hey , hey , hey , what is it on the TV ?" ("HEY , HEY , HEY , WHY IS IT ALWAYS THIS WAY ?". )    "Why Is It Always This Way?".

      Then there's ....."Final Solution" , Pere Ubu . "Don't need a cure , and I don't need a cure , and I don't need a cure , I need a final solution."     ("Don't need a car , and I don't need a job , and I don't need a girl , I need a final solution"....That said it all , for me , when I first heard it in my teens. Even if I was wrong.).

Sex Pistols "New York" "An imitation made of Cheech and Chong."  ("..Cheese and chalk.")
"You porno faggots"  ("You poor little faggots".).

X - "Universal Corner"  "Scream in agony" ( "Screaming "Magdalene").

"Nausea"    "Take this , this is all they had." ("Take the scissors , saw the head.").

"Johnny Hit and Run Pauline"  "He bought a sterilized light bulb"  ("Sterilized Hypo" - That was'nt mine , that was on a lyric sheet for a band I was auditioning with.).

You get the idea , let's see some of yours.

    • Your hearing can be affected by a lot of things. Do you smoke cigarettes or pot? Chances are your ear canals aren't draining properly. Had a really bad head cold lately? Your sinuses might still be really fucked up. There's environmental factors too, mold spores in the air can fuck up ear canals, allergies to animals, swimming all the time can cause issues. I get a lot of ear problems, I've had glue ear in my right ear for twenty odd years. I got a burst ear drum in my right ear a couple of months ago from a massive ear infection, It's only just coming right. Sometimes I get tinnitus so bad in my right ear I can't hear anything for a couple of seconds, if you can imagine what incredibly loud annoying feedback is like then your half way there.

You want my advice? Don't fuck around, get it checked for medical shit and buy some good quality earplugs to try to minimize any long term serious damage.
